From the Publisher Hello Fellow Pet Lovers, This is an exciting year for us in many ways. First, we have turned 15 this year. It’s quite a milestone for us and it also says a lot about the special place our pets share in our families. This year, 2 adorable bunnies, Boppity and Alice hopped into our family. They are cute, cuddly and sweet and they enjoy all of the love and attention my kids give them. We adopted them from AWLA in Alexandria and they have an adorable story. The bunnies were living in separate areas of the shelter, but Boppity somehow always managed to sneak to in Alice’s cage no matter how tightly they were secured. After a few weeks of this behavior, the staff decided they should just allow the bunnies to share a hutch and they made them a nice big home together. The couple has been happily living together ever since and continue to enjoy each other’s company in my living room! This year also marks the launch of our SeeSpotRace series of events. The first event, GlowDogGlow 5K will be May 23 at the Prince William County Fairgrounds in Manassas. It is a nighttime 5K event that you can run in along with your dog. It is the First-of-its-K9 event. As the sun disappears and the glow lights up the night, participants and their dogs will head out for a 5K walk or run through an amazing glow light course around the fairgrounds, complete with an after party including music and well-deserved refreshments. We are hoping that you can join us. We are certain that it will be the most Fun, Furry and Fabulous 5K you can imagine! www.NOVADogMagazine.com/SeeSpotRace. Register today!!

2015 has a many other exciting events in store. We have lined up a series of hikes, DC runs, winery tours, training classes and much more. You can find details and ways to participate on our website at PetLoversCompanion.com, on Facebook. com/PetLoversCompanion and also in our email newsletter, which you can sign up to receive on our website as well. As our community grows, so do the fun events. And finally, 2015 is also bringing a newly redesigned website with more content, more articles, more pet stories and more resources for you. So please visit us online and tell us what you think of the new site. It will be live in late spring/ early summer. We are excited to bring you more resources and more events especially. We love being a part of the local pet community, it is where we feel at home! Thank you for being a part of our Per Lovers Companion community. We hope to see you at an event this year!

A Piece of Ribbon Can Save Lives By Rachel Ray, Caring Hands Animal Hospital

T

he Yellow Dog Project was started by Tara Palardy, a dog trainer in Canada, who got the idea from a group in Sweden. Her goal was to educate the public on identifying dogs that needed space. We at Caring Hands Animal Hospital, thought this project was a wonderful movement to help promote. The yellow ribbon is a signal to others that can be seen quickly and easily. A “yellow dog” is any dog that is fearful with strangers, in pain from recent surgery, a rescued pet who has not had sufficient training or socialization yet, as well as many other reasons. A “yellow dog” is not necessarily aggressive, they just need some space.

At the end of the day, it is still extremely important to work on training with your dog. The Yellow Dog Project is not an excuse to bypass training, but allows dogs and their owners the time and space to do it well. We have ribbons available in the lobby of each of our clinics for our clients. These are great for them to pick up after their pet has had surgery and also creates an opportunity to educate kids about pet safety. When children are taught about how to approach a pet safely, the risk of them getting hurt by a pet can be decreased dramatically.

Stop by any of Caring Hands Animal Hospital’s six locations in the Northern Virginia area to pick up a yellow ribbon and learn more about the Yellow Dog Project.

Join NOVADog Magazine and the Super Pet Expo to Set the Doggie-Kissing WORLD RECORD! Meet in the parking lot of the Super Pet Expo on Sat., March 28, 9:40 a.m. Details at www. superpetexpo.com/chantilly.

Rodents love pet waste. Dog poop can be a common food source for rats and other rodents in developed areas. An unwanted neighbor in any community, the presence of rodents can decrease the property values of all nearby homes and presents a host of additional health concerns to residents themselves. Children are at risk. Children at play don’t often wash their hands and most do not realize the potential hazards of coming into contact with waste that has been left on the ground. The

bacteria and parasites found in dog droppings are most commonly passed to humans by touch. Less mess, less stress. The more frequently you scoop the yard, the easier it is to stay on top of the aforementioned pet waste problems. Luckily, for those who don’t have enough time to pull out the rake or shovel and scour the yard for doggie deposits, local pet waste removal services can help you wash your hands clean of the whole cleanup business, all for about the same price as a large pizza.

puppies that I have seen helped with Reiki! I offer Reiki during a stand-alone “healing” session or as a complement to a training session. Charging the training area with Reiki energy before and during the training class helps most dogs relax, focus and learn.

For example, Roth, a 3-year-old shepherd mix, was up for adoption when we met. He was very aloof and had not listened to any of his previous handlers. After one 30-minute Reiki session Roth’s whole demeanor changed. His whole body relaxed and he came up and nuzzled my hand, something he had never done with anyone. I continued the Reiki sessions twice a week along with obedience training and after four weeks Roth was a well-behaved loving dog, executing his commands like a pro. He found his forever home shortly afterwards. Roth and his new family could not be happier.

While Reiki is no substitute for a veterinarian’s diagnosis and treatment, reported benefits include: • Reduces anxiety and stress • Reduces fatigue and insomnia • Assists with separation anxiety • Lowers blood pressure • Decreases pain • Eases the grieving process • Instills confidence, clarity, and self esteem • Supports the body’s natural healing process Reiki can also help reduce the feelings of stress associated with noise, separation, and thunderstorm phobias.

Pet Cardiology, Why our Best Friends Need Board-Certified Veterinary Cardiologists by Bonnie Lefbom, DVM, Diplomate, ACVIM, (Cardiology)

oard Certified Veterinary Cardiologists?!? Who would ever need one?

Heart disease is a common problem in dogs and cats. 2/3 of small breed dogs and 15% of cats will develop heart problems in their lifetime. Large breed dogs, particularly Boxers, Dobermans, and the Giant breeds are susceptible to rhythm problems and a weak heart muscle while smaller dogs acquire valve problems. Cats primarily develop heart muscle disease, with the most aggressive cases developing at a very young age. How would I know if my pet has a heart problem? Frequent wellness and preventative health visits with your primary care veterinarian are the key to giving your pet a long and healthy life. In most cases of pets with heart problems, your veterinarian will hear an abnormal heart sound during the veterinary physical examination. They may describe hearing a murmur or a rhythm problem well before the pet shows any outward signs. For cats, there is a new blood test (NT ProBNP) that

Rehabilitation at Veterinary Surgical Centers: Helping Pets Bounce Back and Thrive Like Never Before By Julie Wentzel, DVM, CVA, CVPP

P

hysical rehabilitation is a recent addition to the growing list of specialties and opportunities in veterinary medicine that allow our pets to remain active and healthy longer. Rehabilitation practitioners are veterinarians, veterinary technicians, or human physical therapists who have completed the necessary training and certification, and we are lucky to have four talented rehabilitation practitioners on staff at Veterinary Surgical Centers Rehabilitation (VSCR). Each of us is experienced in evaluating your pet’s condition, providing comfort therapies, and formulating a treatment strategy that is tailored to your pet’s specific needs.

Most commonly, we work with canine or feline patients who have had surgery at our affiliated surgery practice, Veterinary Surgical Centers. Patients that undergo these surgical procedures—everything from cruciate surgery, to total hip and knee replacement, and even soft tissue surgeries—can benefit from rehabilitation as a part of their recovery. We have a saying at VSCR that we truly believe, “There’s more to recovery than rest.” And these post-operative treatments really do help patients improve range of motion and weight bearing on the affected limb(s), mediate pain and discomfort, and strengthen areas of the body weakened by illness or injury.

Not Just for Post-Op Pets. Perhaps you’re thinking, “My dog hasn’t had surgery, so we don’t need rehab.” But it’s important to note that rehabilitation encompasses much more than post-operative recovery, even though that is a large part of what we do. Rehabilitation may be used as a first step in treating certain medical conditions, such as tendonopathies (common in the shoulders), neurologic conditions, and soft tissue strains. It also can be used to achieve life style changes, such as weight loss, conditioning, and more. We utilize a variety of treatments—from manual therapies to massage—that help these patients improve comfort, range of motion, and flexibility. We employ strategies for neuromuscular re-education and gait re-education to improve the form and function of limbs and the rest of the body. Strengthening exercises, such as underwater or land-based treadmill, can be tailored to focus on specific muscles or the whole body. Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, or TENS, can be used for pain control, to improve swelling/edema, or to help with muscle and nerve function in very weak or neurologic patients. Therapeutic ultrasound and extracorporeal shockwave therapy are used to aide with healing and pain control, among other things. Often, these options are used in combination with one another, as well as with other medi-

27

cations and nutraceuticals and acupuncture, to achieve the best results. We also work with otherwise healthy patients to achieve weight loss goals or to condition in preparation for agility competitions and other activities. For geriatric patients, we can develop a plan to reduce pain and improve muscle tone and quality of life. In overweight or very weak pets, strengthening and weight loss may play an integral role in post-operative recovery to allow for the best surgical outcome, should they need surgery. The underwater treadmill can be a big lifesaver for these patients—and, as the photo shows, it is not just for dogs! Harnessing the power of hydrotherapy, the underwater treadmill works to strengthen patients that suffer from a wide variety of ailments—from arthritis to simply being overweight—without putting undue stress on the body. If you think that your pet could benefit from our rehabilitation program, speak with your primary veterinarian or contact us at 703242-6000. Our team of experienced practitioners is ready to partner with you to develop a customized plan for improving your pet’s comfort and quality of life! Trap-Neuter-Return: The Humane Approach to Community Cats By Alley Cat Allies

E

very day Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) programs are being implemented to assist feral cats. Compassionate societies are embracing this humane, nonlethal method of managing community cats, because it preserves innocent life and because it is effective.

Unlike “catch and kill,” TNR programs stabilize and reduce cat populations, improve the overall health of outdoor cats, and reduce both shelter costs and euthanasia rates. TNR also helps cats to be better neighbors by eliminating mating behaviors like yowling, spraying, and fighting. Cats are caught using humane traps and each is spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and eartipped for identification. The cats are returned to the site, where a caretaker feeds and monitors them. Kittens/cats who are friendly or can be socialized are placed into an adoption program. TNR programs have been shown to drive community involvement and encourage compassionate actions. With more individuals sharing their homes with companion animals, the bond between humans and animals is

strengthening. The majority of people would rather see a cat sterilized and returned to her outdoor home than trapped and killed. Alley Cat Rescue advocates for the humane management of community cats and believes sterilization is the key to ending the killing of millions of cats every year. ACR operates a low-cost spay and neuter clinic, as well as a TNR clinic. All services are by appointment only; please call or email for more information. Alley Cat Rescue is located in Brentwood, Maryland. Call 301-277-5595 or visit SaveACat.org for more information.

Canine Massage for the Soul By Eneida Ramirez, K9zentime Undoubtedly, dogs have stolen our hearts and made us more compassionate human beings. These playful, furry, loyal companions have a profound impact in our everyday lives. They bring us happiness and joy despite our emotional state or physical condition. Whether we are happy, successful in our careers, saddened, depressed or a retired soldier suffering emotional turmoil, dogs give us the best priceless gift one can give: Unconditional Love. Sure enough, there are approximately 70-80 million dogs owned in the U.S. according to ASPCA. These dogs ask nothing in return for the love they give us; nonetheless, many dog owners are trying to find a way to make their short lives happier in return. There

is a peculiar practice that can benefit dogs and actually make their lives happier and healthier: Canine massage. It is not a new practice, in fact canine massage is an ancient practice that has equivalent effects on dogs as in humans. Some benefits are: improved circulation and oxygenation, pain alleviation, relaxation and tension release, emotional calmness, promotes healing and eliminates toxins, helps geriatric symptoms such as arthritis, relieves muscle atrophy and achieves mental balance and focus. Canine massage has a crucial and positive impact in your dog’s well-being that will surely bring happiness to both of your hearts. K9zentime is a local business specializing in canine massage therapy doing house calls in Northern Virginia who truly believe in their practice’s benefits and results stated on their tag line “Because relaxed paws make happier tails”.

Whatever you have planned this year, don’t let injury or illness stand in your way. If trouble strikes, bring your furry family member to the experts at Veterinary Surgical Centers and Veterinary Surgical Centers Rehabilitation. Committed to matching compassionate care with leading industry approaches, our team specializes in: • Orthopedic and soft tissue surgery • Plastic and reconstructive surgery • Minimally invasive surgery • Physical rehabilitation • Conditioning and weight loss • Pain management and more!

Adopt a Rescued Dog

There are several benefits to adopting a rescued dog. Many rescued dogs are mature adults who are housebroken. Adult dogs are past the stage of chewing on your shoes and furniture. They are loyal to the hand that feeds them, shelters them, and loves them. Give a loving pet a second chance – adopt. Listed on the following pages are telephone contacts for individual dog breed rescues. If the breed you are looking for is not listed, it may be because the contact for that breed has declined to be in the book or we are not aware of them. Keep in mind when calling these contacts that in many cases you are calling someone’s home. Most of these people are volunteers who donate their time for the love of the breed. Be respectful of the hours you call. Also, be aware that it may take time to get a response to your call.

www.petloverscompanion.com • 703.780.4400 Cats that consume high carbohydrate foods tend to develop high blood sugar and Diabetes. Diabetes can lead to loss of appetite, vomiting and dehydration—eventually damaging the kidneys and other vital organs. Cats with diabetes will urinate frequently and often eat ravenously because their bodies cannot properly utilize their food. Hence, the constant consumption of high sugar starches can be extremely detrimental to an obligate carnivore. In nature a cat would hunt for its food and consume its prey almost entirely. Our beloved

53

house cats do not have to work (at least not very hard) for their food. Our less active indoor cats have become morbidly obese. These cats are consuming far too many inappropriate ingredients. Diets containing high quality meats, low carbohydrates and a high moisture content are the most biologically appropriate. A high quality canned, dehydrated or raw diet is usually the best way to prevent the most common cat diseases that seem to run rampant in today’s cat population.
