Destination weddings by nature, and design, have long appealed to love-struck couples seeking to infuse their weddings with unique experiences and exotic locations. With this in mind we have put together an issue we hope will ignite your imaginations with the anticipatory spirit of romantic adventure. From a fireside proposal in Scotland, to stolen moments on the Great Wall of China, to the fashion runways of New York City, wanderlust guides the lives of the couples in this issue, what unites them is the shared belief that Bali offers an unrivaled environment to fulfill dream weddings. We start our adventures following a fun loving duo as they head offshore for a tropical wedding on the island haven of Nusa Lembongan; then join a pair of frequent fliers, who styled their entire wedding on their sojourns across the globe; and share the joys of one couple who searched continents to find the ideal wedding venue, only to discover that it was right here in Bali.

Q A

MY FIANCÉE AND I ARE REALLY EXCITED ABOUT OUR BALI WEDDING, HOWEVER WE NEED HELP DECIDING WHETHER TO MARRY IN A GORGEOUS (PRIVATE) VILLA – BALI HAS SO MANY, OR ONE OF THE ISLANDS SPECTACULAR RESORTS?

I AM BRINGING A COUTURE BRIDAL DRESS TO BALI FOR OUR WEDDING; FOLLOWING THE CEREMONY WE WILL TAKE A CRUISE THROUGH NEARBY ISLANDS. DO YOU HAVE TIPS ON HOW TO CARE FOR IT AFTERWARDS GIVEN BALI’S HUMIDITY?

IS IT POSSIBLE TO SET UP A GIFT REGISTRY IN BALI? WE THOUGHT IT WOULD BE FUN TO HAVE A FEW SHOPS THAT OUR GUESTS COULD TOUR ONCE THEY ARRIVE AND THE GIFTS WOULD SERVE TO REMIND US FOREVER OF OUR MAGICAL BALI WEDDING?

The good news is that Bali is spoiled for choices. But as you’ve discovered making the decision is not easy. Private villas typically offer highly intimate venues for weddings, which allow for greater discretion such as loud music, all-night festivities, and settings that can be transformed into extraordinary personalised environments. Prices, and length of stay requirements vary greatly so make sure you check these.

Interestingly I had this experience myself during a recent ten-day fashion shoot on location in Bali. Its best to take the dress with you in the cabin to prevent the possibility of your luggage getting lost; secondly, a pure silk gown can get badly crushed, especially if the gown has rushing, which is very difficult to iron out.

Whilst this beautiful island is truly a home-makers paradise, the difficulty of getting certain items through international customs is the main reason that the gift registry trend has never really taken off. But that doesn’t preclude you from creating your own. In a ‘you heard it here first’ piece of news, the creative folk at John Hardy, famous for wonderful handcrafted silver are about to launch a new homeware range incorporating their trademark silver, bamboo and alabaster. Tucked away in the artisan hub of Ubud, the John Hardy ‘green’ compound is an absolute must-visit whilst in Bali, and also a perfect choice for some dreamy web browsing before even arriving in Bali.

Bali also has a great many stunning hotels and resorts that feature a variety of venues, highly trained staff, and selection of room types for friends/family. One option you may want to consider that combines the best of both is a property buy-out whereby the hotel, its facilities, and staff, become your personal venue to celebrate in style. Depending on the number of guests this can be surprisingly affordable.

Erick Rikmawan Specialises in Bali haute couture weddings combining style, fashion, and festive fun. www.Ido-bali.com

18

If it’s not possible to hand carry the gown onboard I would suggest packing the dress in a large suitcase by itself along with dry packs, to prevent the pressure of other clothing from crushing the gown. Though Bali’s humidity can make it more susceptible to crushing it shouldn’t be a problem if it’s just a couple of weeks. To be safe you can cover the gown with a sheet of plain white paper and keep stored in plastic bridal cover.

Another increasingly common option is setting up a honeymoon contribution fund. My honeymoon favourite.... the divine, inimitable Como Shambhala Estate!

FLORALTALK

WEDDING DAY SCENTS We are getting married in June on a beach at the base of the cliffs in Uluwatu. We plan a natural wedding with minimal decorations, so as not to detract from the rawness of the scenery, and would like to use colourful local flowers. We’ll both be wearing white. What do you suggest?

I would use a combination of white orchid, green anthurium, frangipani and roses. These flowers are in season in June, are easy to use and won’t wilt in the heat. Scatter the aisle with white rose petals and a touch of yellow frangipani, but concentrate the petals on the edges so that you don’t get your dress dirty. The canopy can be decorated in bamboo and twigs to enhance the natural theme, then given a splash of colour with a mix of orchids, anthurium and a scattering of frangipani. The same combination can be used for the altar - but use a low table and a small arrangement so they wont clash with the priest.

TABLE ARRANGEMENTS For a long table, use either small clusters at a height of around 35 cm, or one long arrangement that reaches from one end to the other. Once again use white orchids, green anthurium, and frangipani. Use the same floral combination for round tables – but keep the arrangements low so that people can see each other. If you have a floral question please email us at info@celebrasianmedia.com

YATIE NALLA learned the traditional craft of Balinese flower arrangement, and also studied with a Dutch flower master. She now applies her talents at Puri Amanda, one of Bali’s leading floral designers, where flower arrangement is elevated to a work of art. www.puriamanda.com

BRIDAL BOUQUET Opt for a round but casual posy made from roses and orchids, or a tight bouquet with a natural look, using cala lily and orchids. For the groom’s corsage, use the same flowers as the bouquet to prevent a clash.

BRIDALTRENDS

GREAT ESCAPES KATRINA SIMORANGKIR TAKES A NOSTALGIC LOOK AT BALI WEDDING ADVENTURES.

When we started our wedding planning company in Bali back in 1992 everything was an adventure, starting with the very fact that a couple had even chosen the island for their celebration. Tools of the trade then consisted of a telephone, a fax machine and a computer. The internet had yet to reach the island and hand phones were still a thing of the future. Communication costs were very high and power failures common. Just running the business was an adventure in itself.

They chose to get married at ‘Ply Beach’…… a cliff top located at the end of kilometres of rough terrain dotted with cows, cow dung and rocks. The actual name is ‘Fly Beach,’ as it is the jump off point for much of the hang-gliding that takes place in Bali, but the sign writer of the time obviously could not pronounce the F. Driving through the pitch black terrain followed by the church Minister and civil registrar was quite the adventure for us, especially since it had poured with rain all the night before. The couple had intended to go down the cliff side on a 25cm pathway to the beach far below for their ceremony, however, we decided that was just too dangerous for all concerned. So the wedding took place on the cliffs and the sky cleared just in time for a magical sun rise. Breakfast was delivered by jeep from the caterer of the day – who is now one of the biggest and best known on the island! Before this particular adventure ended the civil registrar experienced a flat tyre and the minister’s car broke down – all before getting back to the main road.

Djuna Ivereigh

In those days there was not much variety for wedding venues, it was pretty much hotel, hotel or hotel. For those wanting something a little different, a popular spot was the cliff top overlooking the fabulous Padang-Padang beach, followed by a trek down very rough stone stairs on to the beach below for some dramatic photographs. One of the most adventurous and memorable weddings in those days was a sunrise celebration for an English/ Australian couple and 20 of their family and friends.

These days adventure weddings can incorporate travel to the islands of Lombok, Nusa Lembongan, Yogjakarta, Batam and Moyo Island. For those looking for additional excitement, ceremonies can take place underwater, in a helicopter, on an elephant, out at sea, and in the case of our Spectacular Seclusion weddings, tiny places secreted away in the middle of the island and only big enough for about 8 people. As the number of weddings grow so to do the opportunities for amazing adventures. These days there is little that an imaginative wedding planner cannot make happen.

KATRINA SIMORANGKIR, one of the first and the most experienced wedding planners on the island. Prior to weddings she was a travel and tour specialist in both Australia and Bali. www.balivillaweddings.com

Imagine being washed up on a desert island, but someone has thoughtfully provided all the creature comforts you could possibly imagine, like squishy bean bags, a well stocked bar and gourmet pizza. At high tide the sparkling sea beckons seductively, while low tide changes the vista, revealing picturesque rock pools filled with pretty shells and darting fish.

Order a round of fruity and refreshing Pimm’s Cups and recline on wooden deckchairs under sun parasols; or perhaps climb up to one of the pretty bungalows that clings to the rocks and indulge in an open air massage. Food and drinks are thoughtfully served anywhere you happen to be reclining, but if you want to sit upright, the island style pavilion provides the ultimate in beach shack chic and blends seamlessly thanks to nature with walls of creamy sea stone, beige bamboo, and a shaggy roof of alang alang. The menu offers classic beach side fare, with a luxury twist – fish and chips are made with the freshest barramundi and homemade tartar, pizza comes with king prawns and lemon, the fragrant Thai salad is decked out in beef and prawns, and soft and fluffy churros are dipped in a decadent warm chocolate sauce.

As the setting sun casts its golden glow gather around the island bar for a last cocktail. This is one cast away experience you won’t want to end, so you could always consider booking into one of the Semara’s luxury cliff top villas, and doing it all again tomorrow. *Finn’s is also available for weddings.

INTERNATIONAL LAW IS BACHELOR PARTY LAW

WRITTEN BY NATHAN MYERS

BUCKS AHOY

I’m no lawyer, but I’ve watched enough movies to know that a mile or so out to sea, anything goes. This is why pirates still plunder in this day and age. And why Bali’s high seas are the ideal venue for a bachelor party. So charter your boat, book the girls on a spa day, and say good by to land laws. Pirate law rules. So let’s just get this out of the way: yaargh matey.

32

Okay, step one: The Cooler. Your personal booty chest of indulgent snacks, decadent cocktails and roguish shots. Some drinkable ice, perhaps. Any Bali wedding party is going to consume it’s share of Bintang and nasi goreng, but under international law you should eat and drink like James Bond at a frat party. Brainstorm with your bachelor team beforehand… visualizing that cooler opening for speeches, toasts, pranks, and blood-red sunset. You’re going to need a big cooler, and people to carry it for you. Are you writing this down? We’re brainstorming here. Start The List. Aside from your cooler, the most essential element of The Bachelor Boat concept is the boat; in particular, that the boat is yours and yours alone. You don’t need a dozen Japanese tourists gawking in horror at your scallywag shenanigans. Pirates don’t take passengers, they take prisoners. Your boat. Your rules. Yaargh. Set sail with the dawn. With calm seas and gentle winds. Mt. Agung looming over the land like the earth shaking a fist at the sky. The whole “no drinking before noon” rule only applies on land, so crack a coldie as you leave the harbour and toast the day ahead. Shake your fist at the sky. Drop a line and kill some fish. It’s almost two hours to Bali’s tiny neighbor island of Nusa Lembongan, but tell your grinning Captain Wayan to make it three. It’s the last day of your bachelor’s single life — no need to rush. Now that you’re in international water, make up a few of your own rules. Stupid, illogical stuff. Like, anytime someone catches a fish, everyone else takes a shot. Or, if anyone mentions wives, kids or seating arrangements, they must climb the mast naked and squawk like a parrot. Silly stuff like this can bond the crew and create classic recalls, or at least a funny photo. Write camera on The List. Then cross it off. Nusa Lembongan is a nice island. Try not to ruin it. Have your boat settle in at one of the beachfront resorts and beat the mid-day blaze by snorkeling, surfing, or cruising motorbikes around the parched little island. Float in the saltwater pool. Do a dive over epic reef. Grab some lunch

(can’t escape that nasi.) Bury some treasure or train a parrot to sing sea-shanties. Whatever floats your land-mass. Tell the captain to weigh anchor by early afternoon, before anyone ralphs on the glass bottom skiff (fish hate that.) Cast a line. Lose the shirt. Thank me for telling you about The Cooler. Chilled Jagermeister and crab-dip pretzles was the perfect thing. Someone pass the gummy bears and Kaluha. Bump that sound system (add iPod to The List.) Nothing beats the quick silence of sailing, except crushing that silence with glam rock power ballads. You’ve seen a million places, and you rocked them all. Ask the local crew if they know how to make an espresso martini. That was a trick question — they’re so cute confused. Now pour some chilled Absolut over powdered Nescafe and reel that fish in you forgot about. How long’s it been gagging on that hook? Sashimi anyone? The boat crew probably doesn’t have a decent fillet knife, that’s why you’ve got one with the cutting board in the cooler. (List it!) They’re barely bothered by fish-guts on the deck, especially when you over-tip to mix the wasabi and soy (also Listed.) The sun is almost setting. Blood-red, just like I said it would be. Beautiful the way it glints off your sunburn.

34

Tell the bachelor it’s time for “Gamelon Karaoke,” where each of you must sing a classic rock song a capella to the group. Everyone should get real excited about the idea and agree the bachelor should go first. Make him sing a full song. Make him really feel it. When he’s done, tell him no way are the rest of you doing anything that stupid. Pour some shots. Share some stories. Old times. Strange confessions. Blatant lies. It’s not just legal laws that evaporate a mile out to sea, it’s the unspoken laws of what you say, how you act, and what you think. Something about being out on the ocean that just sets your heart free. A place where men can truly be men (even when you’ve hired other men to do the manly bits for you.) When you step back onto land, you’ll face the halfdrunk decision of whether to crawl home to a bottle of aloe vera or charge the club for something more potent. Open the cooler and you’ll find your answer: Red Bull and vodka. Just enough ice. Yaargh, matey.

24HOURS

SEE Location! Location! Location! It all starts with setting the stage for the event, in this case locating the perfect venue. I deal mostly with private villas so I spend a lot of time reviewing the client’s questionnaire, including budget and “wish list” criteria that I’ll use to hand select a short-list of villas, any of which would provide a spectacular setting for a dream wedding, to visit together with the couple.

SCENT Bali is spoiled with options for floral decorations, I prepare mock-ups based on special designs created specifically with the couple in mind. SHOP A favorite way to ‘introduce’ both the couple, as well as their friends and family members to Bali is by putting together welcome bags with goodies, gifts, and a copy of the wedding itinerary upon their arrival. I’ll shop for these at some of Bali’s best traditional craft markets.

TASTE I believe one of the most important details of the wedding is the food, from canapés to customized cakes, which is why I prefer to work only with the best caterers and suppliers. Collaborating with Bali Catering Company, for example, I set up a food tasting whereby we can create menus tailored specifically to the couple’s preferences.

EXPERIENCE My motto is ‘Don’t just dream it, experience it, make it a reality.’ For the wedding couple it feels as if their Bali Wedding Experience happened by magic, but behind the scenes we’re paying incredible attention to all the details to ensure the wedding, like a good movie, is one you will want to watch forever. www.baliweddingexperience.com

MYBALIMYROMANCE

IN BALI, WHERE ANCIENT PRACTICES COEXIST IN HARMONY WITH MODERN TIMES, THE ISLANDS TIMELESS SPIRIT OF HOSPITALITY IS FOREVER EVOLVING: OTHERWORLDLY TEMPLES BLEND SEAMLESSLY WITH OPULENT VILLA RESORTS WHILE NATURAL HEALERS WORK AMIDST EXTRAVAGANT SPAS. FEW EMBODY THE SOUL OF THIS ENCHANTING ISLAND WITH AS MUCH SELF- ASSURED ELEGANCE THAN BALI’S OWN DAUGHTER, WAYAN TRIANI, WHO COMBINES AUTHENTIC ROOTS WITH FASHIONABLE SOPHISTICATION AS A WEDDING PLANNER TO CONJURE FORTH UNIQUE, AND UNFORGETTABLE, CELEBRATIONS, THAT TRULY EMBODY THE BALINESE SPIRIT.

My Bali is a cosmos coloured by the genuine hospitality and warmth of the Balinese people where cultural traditions and spiritual serenity transcend time and place; it’s a mystical and romantic landscape from stylish seaside venues to sub-tropical forests to soaring volcanic vistas. My favourite Bali celebrations Galungan & Kuningan. I still remember how the anticipation filled the house, and village, with such joy. My memories are full of happy family moments, lots of food, laughter, and an abundance of love! My favourite Bali flowers a frangipani & jasmine. Balinese use them for many occasions in our daily life; they are beautiful & elegant with a perfume-like fragrance. My private Bali beach is the white sandy beach at Nusa Dua because it is nearby my home, and it is where I never get bored watching the sunrise while doing my morning jogging, or Seminyak beach, with its sultry sunsets and tantric vibes. My Bali shopping secret Sukawati art market where you can find many traditional handicrafts, novelty gifts and unique curios, great for welcome baskets or guest favours. My Bali best dining is savouring Babi Guling at Ibu Oka for lunch in Ubud or Bebek Bengil for crispy duck! Enjoying grilled seafood along Jimbaran Bay while watching the sunset. I also enjoy, once in a while sophistication with fine dining. My Bali romantic table for two is anywhere as long as I spend the moment with the one that I love. My secret Bali hideaway is never the same place. Guided by the spirit of romance, wanderlust, and serendipity I enjoy the sense of discovery that “getting lost” amidst Bali’s wonderland inspires. My Bali vow is to create out-of-this-world memories while fulfilling client’s highly personal dreams by drawing upon Bali’s vivid imagination for extraordinary moments.

CRAIG&NINA A PROPOSAL BY A ROARING LOG FIRE IN SCOTLAND LEADS CRAIG AND NINA ON A JOURNEY AROUND THE WORLD TO CELEBRATE THEIR LOVE IN A TROPICAL WEDDING IN BALI

WRITTEN BY ALISON BONE PHOTOGRAPHY BY JONAS PETERSON

DREAMWEDDING

THE PROPOSAL - NINA Craig took me to the west coast of Scotland for a holiday and proposed on a sheep skin rug in front of a roaring log fire. We spent the rest of the week doing all the things that I love most, hiking with the dog, horse riding, cuddling up in front of the fire, and watching the amazing nature around us.

The next day we had a pool party with a barbecue at the villa for all our guests. We all met up, swam in the pool, drank cocktails and ate lovely food. It was a chance for all of us to have fun in a very informal way. This was a gift from Craig and myself to our guests as a small thank you.

THE CELEBRATION Craig and I just love Bali, we think it is absolutely magical and couldn’t think of a better place to get married. The actual ceremony was quick and lovely, we wrote most of it together so that everything mentioned was very personal to us. After the ceremony we all went down to the beach where some traditional Balinese rindik players played wonderful music while we all flew kites and laughed and celebrated.

POST WEDDING MUSINGS Neither Craig nor I expected the wedding to go as smoothly as it did – there are always hiccups at weddings and I guess we thought that it would be even harder when you are planning a wedding thousands of miles away from home. But the entire day was like a dream, and everything from the weather when we first woke up, to the music the DJ played at the end of the night was just perfect.

After dinner Craig and I gave our speech; we had prepared a presentation with a map of the world with funny bobble heads for all our guests (i.e. their heads on tiny cartoon bodies,) moving on a map to various different places. The message behind it was that, no matter where we are love always finds a way to bring us back together again. We went on to thank everyone for travelling so far to be with us on our special day. The presentation ended with all of the bobble head moving to Bali, and the map, on which they were moving, zoomed out to reveal that the world was actually one big heart. We then showed the final part of the movie ‘Love Actually’ where all these friends and families meet up at airports and are hugging to the Beach Boys song “God Only Knows.”

46

TIPS A destination wedding is a lot cheaper and easier than most people think, so just go for it! This was one of the loveliest experiences of our lives, and it was amazingly stress free. The internet is a wonderful thing and these days you can use tools like Tripadvisor to check out the places you are going in full detail. We even saw videos of the villa on Youtube, so we knew exactly what everything looked like before we were even there. We spoke to our organisers and our photographer over Skype which made it feel like we had met up with them. In fact I loved the planning of our wedding so much that I am now in the process of starting a wedding blog, www.plumtreeweddings.com. I guess encouraging travel and bringing people from all over the world together was the message behind our wedding and I intend to convey that through my blog.

KEY TREE The key tree was our seating plan, the guests had to find their key, the number on the back of the tag would correspond to a number on the pop-up trees on the placemats.

PHOTO BOOTH We made our own photo booth, complete with a tree print as a background, and provided lots of funny props. These photos were taken with my camera and will be a lovely memory of the day for both us and our guests. The children particularly loved the booth and the costumes.

MY DRESS I love the J Crew collection because all of their dresses are simple yet very modern. The dress had several layers of floaty tulle, my nod to the princess within me. My hair pieces and necklace were custom made by a wedding jewellery designer from Edinburgh called Janet who has a fantastic shop called Rene Wallrus. I asked her to capture the deep turquoise of the Bali sea, the lush greenery of the villa gardens and the moss-covered table decorations.

FAMILY TREE We had a family tree with wedding photos of our parents and grandparents, there was also a wishing tree instead of a guest book where our guests wrote the wishes and hopes they had for our future together and then hung them on the tree. We plan to read them on the day of our 5th wedding anniversary.

NATURE Our theme was nature, and in particular trees. We love the Bali vegetation and that was one of the things that drew us to the island, so we wanted everything to have a natural and rustic feel. The tree theme was continued throughout all of the decorations.

DREAMWEDDING

A VACATION IN BALI,

PROPOSAL

WE HOPED, WOULD BE A GREAT WAY FOR LOVED ONES FROM DIFFERENT PARTS OF OUR LIVES TO BEFRIEND ONE ANOTHER

TQ proposed in international arrivals after I got off a sixteen hour flight, with a huge red banner that read, “Amy Will You Marry Me?” (he got a lot of teasing from the flight attendants!) finally, we were making our guests fly to Bali with us for a destination wedding; we had to laugh at it all!

DESTINATION BALI We knew early on that we wanted a destination wedding within three hours flight of Singapore. Indonesia was a logical choice because TQ and I had both worked in Jakarta, and Ubud held special meaning for us after attending the cremation ceremony of a Hindu high priest in a village near there. It was a very special, National Geographic-type event with a procession of 2,000 villagers in elaborate costumes – and we were the only tourists! We also love the lush rice terraces and the jungle surrounding Ubud.

THE VENUE We prioritised atmosphere, food and room pricing, and the Alila Ubud was an early front-runner. Of course, we still went ahead and visited about eight hotels across Bali over a long weekend.

created a relaxed and unhurried atmosphere. Our guests went on organised outings together, like elephant rides and a volcano trek, and our plan worked so well that by the time of the wedding they were all booking vacations together!

A vacation in Bali, we hoped, would be a great way for loved ones from different parts of our lives to befriend one another and we booked the entire resort for our wedding party, which

To entertain guests an exibition of childhood photos was set up by a friend in the hotel’s art gallery.

71

MEMORABLE MOMENTS The whole ceremony! Chilling out with my girlfriends before the real rush of the day began…. How happy TQ was to put on his ring…. How beautiful our mums looked…. My dad’s amazing speech…. How our friends blew us away with their hilarious, mortifying, touching speeches…. Soaking in the rose petal-strewn tub after everyone had retired for the night. The amazing thing is that what you spend your time on before the wedding, and what wedding magazines prep you to focus on, is the stuff of the wedding. But when the day actually comes, you have to just let everything go, relax, and enjoy the journey. What you remember most are the people of the wedding.

TOP TIPS Have a talk with your fiancée early in the wedding planning process to discuss specifically what elements of the wedding matter most to both of you, and which you really don’t care about; this helps to avoid conflicts over details, budgeting, and how you allocate your time later on. You will inevitably have to make trade-offs, but its important to be clear about what you both want. For example, we decided that we cared about venue, photography, graphic design, food, and having everyone together. We didn’t particularly care about a live band, videographer, or elaborate flowers. That made things pretty simple.

THE CELEBRATION Even though our ceremony was very modern, we added some traditional Indonesian touches, with rindik music at our ceremony (before the Beatles came on,) batik in the décor, a family-style Indonesian-Western reception dinner, and a coffee bar with joe from all over Indonesia.

72

We unexpectedly had to draw on a very traditional Balinese resource too: the pawang hujan, a rain-stopping mystic, who worked miracles in pushing the looming rainclouds away from our ceremony site. Being ethnic Chinese, we also worked in a Chinese tea ceremony and traditional yam seng toast, punctuated by fireworks.

TABLE SETTINGS Each table was named after a city of significance for the couple. Our menu was divided into ‘Take-off’ (appetisers,) ‘Cruising’ (mains,) and ‘Landing’ (desserts.)

STIR STICKS We designed stir sticks for the signature cocktails (a watermelon mojito and an "Alila Fresh" containing soda water, cloves, cinnamon, and other spices).

MONKEY OUR WEDDING COULD ONLY HAVE A TRAVEL THEME! WE HAD A LONG-DISTANCE RELATIONSHIP FOR TWO YEARS, AND WHEN I FINALLY MOVED TO SINGAPORE, WE BOTH TOOK JOBS THAT SENT US OUT OF THE COUNTRY FIVE DAYS A WEEK. IN THE SIX YEARS BEFORE WE GOT ENGAGED, I WORKED IN TEN COUNTRIES, AND TQ WORKED IN FIVE. WE’D HAVE DATES AT THE AIRPORT LOUNGE AND BUY HOUSEHOLD TOILETRIES IN DUTY-FREE.

74

The monkey’s name is Alfie. I found him while I was shopping in Bangkok with my best friend and was so charmed by him! I’ve never been a big stuffed animal person, neither has TQ, but when he saw Alfie, he immediately grabbed him and said, “Mine.” Now Alfie is like the kid we plan to have one day. On the day of our wedding, one of my bridesmaids presented us with the brown monkey and she named him Ogo! The best wedding gift! So now we have Alfie and Ogo, mischievous little monkeys and part of our family.

BEAUTIFUL BATIK A batik pattern appeared throughout the wedding’s decor, in addition to on the invitation’s envelope liners. The traditional hand-printed fabric used in Southeast Asia was near and dear to both of our hearts, I used to buy bolts of the dyed silk for dresses and linens while staying with TQ when he was studying the Indonesian language in Java. We reproduced the Yogya design on their paper elements; I found a similar fabric on an online quilting shop (in Kentucky, of all places) to use for the guys’ custom shirts, pocket squares, chair swags, centerpiece vessels, and table runners.

VOWS During the emotional exchanging of the vows we’d written ourselves, I used a handkerchief made from spare batik fabric.

76

EARRINGS A pair of diamond earrings by Christopher Larry (borrowed from my friend Jen Lee who designed the engagement ring and wedding bands), and a J.Crew necklace.

DRESS I wore an Anna Maier-Ulla Maija Couture “Regine” dress, which was the first gown I tried on during a whirlwind 24-hour stopover in New York City between Mexico City and Singapore.

MOPED When the hotel got wind of our travel theme and saw all of the vintage travel props for the photo booth that were sent over by a friend, they brought in a moped for it too.

CULTURE

THE FIRST TIME YOU SEE THEM, THOSE SMALL LEAF-ENCASED FLORAL BITS AND PIECES LYING IN THE DOORWAYS OF SHOPS, OR OUTSIDE MARKET STALLS AND DWELLINGS, IT WOULD BE POSSIBLE TO DISMISS THEM AS CASUALLY STREWN GOOD-LUCK TOKENS OR CHARMS OR EVEN RUBBISH. BUT THAT IS FAR FROM THE TRUTH. THEY ARE, IN FACT CANANG – DAILY OFFERINGS CREATED IN THEIR THOUSANDS THROUGHOUT THE ENCHANTING ISLAND OF BALI. BEHIND THEM LIES AN INSPIRING STORY OF DEVOTION, LOVE AND SACRIFICE.

EXCERPT FROM ‘MY OFFERING’ BY PHILLIPPA GOLDIE A KOKO BALI PRESS BOOK PHOTOGRAPHY BY GUSMANK

78

Every single canang is placed in a delicate banana leaf basket and will contain a small amount of betel nut and chalk, a pandan leaf and some coconut – each one symbolizing a gift for Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva – offerings within offerings.

Balinese people treat the island’s unseen inhabitants - gods, ancestors and demons - as honoured guests and offer them canang daily. The gift of a daily offering expresses gratitude to the good spirits and appeases the demons; strikes a balance of peace, stability and unity between all; and thus creates harmony.

Canang are always small; as gifts to beings higher than ourselves, they are always attractive. The contents – of the small basket are traditionally perishable items – leaves and flowers. Rice is included in an offering to demons. Today people slip in extra gifts such as teabags, candy, money and cigarettes – but these items do not bear any significance.

CULTURE

A CANANG LASTS FOR ONE DAY ONLY - THE NEXT DAY ALWAYS BRINGS FRESH OFFERINGS.

Everything seems to be under control.

I find most advice for destination weddings is to get a wedding planner, but I have decided to take this on as my own project. We have been doing a lot of research and really feel a connection with Nusa Lembongan, which is just 30 minutes by boat from mainland Bali. There are no cars, and it has some of the best beaches in Indonesia. It sounds like paradise!

A friend recommended a resort called Batu Karang (www.batukaranglembongan. com), which is set high on a hill overlooking the blue waters and glorious Mt Agung (the towering volcano on Bali.) I contacted the manager, Troy, who told me the resort accommodates around 40 guests and we could have the whole place to ourselves, he added that the ceremony could take place in a garden looking over the ocean, and the 16 April 2011 was free, how did that sound? It sounded perfect!! The wedding is still seven months away but we are so excited to lock in the venue.

SEPTEMBER 14

I have found a French restaurant call Indiana Kenanga on the other side of the bay. The owner Clement is a Michelin-trained chef who is passionate about food and wine, and all the reviews I have read are first class; so I am thrilled that he has agreed to prepare our wedding dinner. There’s just one small problem. How are we going to get our guests from the ceremony on the hill

at Batu Karang to Indiana Kenanga? Steve and I are contemplating putting everyone on scooters but somehow it’s not very practical!

MALAYSIAN SUPER MODEL AND ACTRESS AMBER CHIA IS USED TO THE SPOTLIGHT OF THE INTERNATIONAL CELEBRITY CIRCUIT, BUT WHEN SHE MARRIED HER LONG TIME MANAGER AND FRIEND ADRIAN WONG, THEY CHOSE TO CELEBRATE WITH A COSY AND INTIMATE BEACH WEDDING IN SANUR.

“ADRIAN PROPOSED WHILE WE WERE ON HOLIDAY IN BALI, SO IT SEEMED ONLY RIGHT TO GET MARRIED HERE AS WELL. I HAVE ALWAYS DREAMED OF A ROMANTIC BEACH WEDDING AND I ABSOLUTELY LOVE BALI WITH ITS GORGEOUS BEACHES AND STUNNING SCENERY, IT IS DEFINITELY MY GO-TO HOLIDAY DESTINATION.” Amber Chia

MYSTYLE

Amber and Adrian chose to tie the knot at Diwangkara Holiday Villa on Sanur beach, inviting 60 close friends and family for a celebration that included a welcome dinner, a traditional Chinese tea ceremony, a Westernstyle wedding reception and an after party. Amber describes the wedding as “Beach chic, with a white wedding theme and lots of white flowers,” she adds that, “Adrian wanted white hair to follow the theme but unfortunately the bleach turned it orange!” Decorations were kept simple and classy so as not to distract from the beauty of the natural sea side setting. For the first dance Adrian played a Chinese song that he composed himself, entertainment included live music and an electric violin performance by Dennis Lau. There was also a catwalk show staged by Benjamin Toong - catwalk guru of the Amber Chia Academy, along with some of her model friends.

my STYLE

My wedding gowns were designed by Keith Kee and Alvin Tay. For the reception, I wore a RM380,000 Keith Kee bridal gown which had 999 pearls by Rafflesia sewn onto it. It was made of French silk chiffon and French silk satin, so it was extremely light and comfortable, making it suitable for the beach. In my line of work, wearing high heels is pretty much a daily affair, so I made it a point to not have any heels at my beach wedding. Instead, I wore a pair of RM250,000 wedding shoes, also with bling supplied by Rafflesia, custom made for me by Dato’ Jimmy Choo. They were so comfortable and it made me enjoy the night even more.

rehearsal dinner indonesian bbq Ben and Sherry’s rehearsal dinner was a traditional Balinese barbecue held on a private beach near the resort. Everything, from the fabrics, to the serving baskets, the fruit and floral displays was sourced in local markets. Seafood was supplied by Jimbaran fishermen and the guests were entertained with a Balinese fire dance.

DREAMWEDDING

Benjamin Lee chose the Amalfi Coast as the setting for his proposal to Sherry Chen. The romantic seaside village of Positano was a far cry from the hectic world of investment banking that had brought them together in Hong Kong. Sherry explains that a destination wedding was inevitable; she is from Taiwan and Benjamin from California so they have friends and families spread across the globe. 110 guests flew to Bali for the nuptials and were treated to three days of celebrations included a lavish Balinese style welcome dinner, an elegant reception with an Italian themed dinner, and an intimate farewell brunch, all staged at the Amanusa Resort. Sherry shares details of her dream wedding.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE BALI? I have attended several weddings on the island and was impressed by every one of them, however I was a little nervous that the design of my own wedding would be hard to execute in Bali. I wanted understated elegance, and nothing overtly colourful or tropical, so we visited the Napa Valley, Provence and Hawaii in search of venues, before stumbling upon Amanusa in Bali. We were drawn to its stunning setting, muscular architecture, beautiful surrounding and intimate atmosphere. Bali seemed like a good choice because it is fun, exotic, cultural and interesting for our guests. DESCRIBE THE THEME FOR YOUR CELEBRATION? Intimate, classy and memorable.

WHAT WAS THE MOST IMPORTANT DETAIL FOR YOUR WEDDING DAY? To be a good host! And to really express our style and personal taste in our wedding. TELL US ABOUT YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER We loved Aaron’s photographic style, which is natural, classy and tasteful, perfectly capturing the true essence of my wedding style. WHAT ABOUT YOUR GOWN? Monique Lhulillier is one of my favourite gown designers, I visited her store in Los Angeles, and ended up mixing and matching two dresses (taking one top and another bottom.) I chose Marchesa for my evening gowns.

WHAT WERE THE MOST MAGIC MOMENTS? There were so many special moments... But my favourite would have to be Ben’s surprise performance (singing and playing piano,) and watching the dazzling fireworks with all of our guests. For Ben, I guess it was finally seeing me walk down the aisle, after a long unanticipated wait. Everyone was sweating and wondering what happened!

TOP TIPS JUST GO WITH YOUR HEART! GET AN AWESOME WEDDING PLANNER; I WAS SO CAREFREE AS A BRIDE FOR THE ENTIRE WEEKEND!

HONEYMOONHIDEAWAY

DESA SENI DREAMING With its collection of antique houses gathered from around the archipelago, Desa Seni, a village resort, provides one of Bali’s most unique honeymoon destinations, and a fascinating glimpse into Indonesian culture and history. Desa Seni translates as ‘arts village’ and the sense of community is all pervasive. As a guest you will be welcomed into the family and treated to a level of intimacy and personal service that you just can’t find in a larger resort. It’s the big smiles, and the little details that make you feel so welcome; like a glass of chilled water thoughtfully placed by your deck chair while you are swimming; and the complimentary fruit platters that appear mid afternoon. Wake in the morning to find a traditional Balinese canang on your veranda with a card explaining how to make this offering of flowers to your own small temple, return in the evening to find your private pathway lit by flaming torches, and your house filled with soft candlelight and the sweet perfume of incense.

The experience is authentic Indonesian, but with all the modern comforts, including luxurious bathrooms, king size beds, cable tv, air conditioning and high speed wireless, so you can enjoy the best of both worlds. Honeymoon packages include a romantic sunset with Champagne and chocolates, complimentary yoga classes and spa treatments, and a Bali day tour to anywhere you want to go.

Stay in Rumah Widja, a charming house made entirely of teak wood and imported from Bojonegoro, East Java. Named for a famous master wayang kulit puppeteer, the house is filled with evocative antiques including wooden puppets, traditional instruments, copper batik stamps and intricate wood carvings from Sumata and Sulawesi. The matching his and hers set of Javanese wedding chairs on the veranda date to the early 1930’s, while the four statues are from Kalimantan and were originally used to ward off crop devils.

This Bali-based New Zealand designer creates original pieces inspired by tribal jewellery and tattoo patterns, Polynesian and Pacific island designs and Indian traditions. Other jewellery has been sourced from the designers’ exotic Asia-Pacific travels. THE INFINITY CHAPEL

A marble walkway surrounded by reflecting pools leads to the jewel in Conrad’s crown – the Infinity Chapel. The triangular shape of the chapel points to the heavens, signifying a holy union, the glass wall represents the delicate and nurturing characteristics of a bride, supporting the solid and masculine groom embodied in marble.

THE INFINITY CHAPEL AT CONRAD IS AN ICONIC LANDMARK ON THE NUSA DUA SEAFRONT, BUT THIS DAZZLING STRUCTURE THAT APPEARS TO FLOAT ON THE WATER IS JUST THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG LOOK BEYOND THE OBVIOUS AND FIND THAT THIS STUNNING RESORT BOASTS A MYRIAD OF DREAM WEDDING POSSIBILITIES, FROM INTIMATE BEACH SIDE BALES, TO ROMANTIC COURTYARDS AND ENCHANTED FLOATING GARDENS

FLOWING WATER

Gardens are linked by a labyrinth of shady path ways leading over stone bridges, winding around ornate fish ponds, promenading along the blinding white sand. Grand, austere buildings are softened by the sensual curves of flourishing garden beds, verdant green lawns and an abundance of hibiscus and heliconia. Groves of thick ferns provide a touch of rainforest, travellers palms unfold like giant fans, and the gnarly branches of dwarfed pink frangipani trees protrude from earthen pots. And there is water everywhere, in the sprawling free form swimming pools, the plethora of ornamental fountains, and the dazzling deep blue sea that makes an ever present backdrop.

Recently awarded “Best Landscape Bali” by Indonesia’s leading design and architecture magazine, Indonesia Design, Conrad’s abundant gardens provide a blank canvas, ripe for imprinting your dream wedding scenario. DWBS shares their vision for creating a perfect moment.

BEACH BALE If a simple yet elegant beach side ceremony with a small group of friends and family is your idea of a dream wedding, choose a beach bale and say “I do” in the golden glow of dusk.

THE FLOATING GARDEN If an enchanted courtyard features in your fairytale wedding fantasies, the floating garden beckons with a manicured lawn framed by heavily laden white frangipani tress and a wedding pavilion floating over a picturesque pond.

Follow with cocktails on the lawn and a wedding dinner in a beachside pavilion at Conrad’s signature restaurant, Eight Degrees South.

Secluded and elegant, this is an ideal setting for a graceful white wedding, picture long candlelit tables, elaborate flower arrangements and maybe a string quartet playing classical music.

THE WATER GARDEN The world is your stage, and never more so than on your wedding day, so let the water garden set the scene and recite your vows in a pavilion rising gracefully from a lotus pond. While you take center stage, your guests will be seated on the surrounding tiered terrace. This quintessential Balinese setting can be decorated in traditional style with local flowers and offerings. Balinese flower girls in ceremonial costumes will lead you over the bridge to the accompaniment of a rindik quartet.

THE OCEAN GARDEN

BEACH BALE NIGHT SHOT For private celebrations, the bale will be set for a romantic candlelit dinner for two, where you can drink Champagne and dine on the finest seafood as you celebrate your dream wedding.

This vast space overlooks the Infinity chapel and the sparkling sea, ideal for bigger gatherings. Stage an open air ceremony at an altar entwined with flowers, usher in the sunset with cocktails and treat your guests to a lavish seated banquet. If your heart is set on a more informal setting stage a beach side seafood barbecue with comfortable bedouin style cushions for lounging. Or represent the flavours of Indonesia with food stations set up like a traditional market. Add a dance area… a DJ… a cigar bar, a shot bar, fire dancers, a mariachi band, a cabaret….the possibilities are endless.

VILLAREVIEW

The ‘Air’ in Villa Air Bali Boutique Resort and Spa originates from the Indonesian word, ‘water.’ Along with an interrelated Zen concept, water is the overriding theme in this gorgeous deluxe villa complex. A heavenly marriage of contemporary meets traditional Balinese, Villa Air Bali isn’t located beachside – rather, hidden down a quiet lane in Petitenget – but is resplendent with stunning water features. At the impressive entrance, you’re greeted with a palazzo-style fountain and reception pavilion rising out of lotus flower ponds, while elongated pathways lined with lofty palms are embellished with water walls and fountains. Behind high stone walls, all 16 secluded villas have a private pool in lush mini-gardens and Zenstyle water wall, leading off from bathrooms. Amid the beautifully tended tropical grounds of mature palms and frangipani trees, banana plants and bougainvillea, Villa Air Bali’s centre-piece is a natural stone swimming pool merging with tiered, flowing reflection pools (resembling those old Balinese water palaces) gently sloping down to immaculate lawns. The peace and serenity is invariably interrupted by bird song or omnipresent gurgling water.

120

A WHITE WEDDING This tranquil setting and ‘affordable luxury’ boutique villa enclave is heaven-sent for intimate dream weddings. Villa Air Bali’s small but dedicated team of wedding planners offer a one-stop wedding service, with a ‘Once in a Lifetime’ wedding package, with additional options for tailor-made, unique celebrations. Although specializing in non-legal, Western-style ceremonies with an all-white theme, Villa Air Bali can organize other personalized options, such as full legal ceremonies with all requisite paperwork, or traditional Balinese Hindu-style ceremonies. There are two main ceremonial locations, both ideal at sunset with the day’s dying golden rays streaming. One is the central lawns, with guest seating (maximum around 60 guests) and white-themed altar and decorations facingupwards to the candlelit pools. Presiding over the pools is a large, open-sided pavilion, perfect for pre-ceremony gatherings with guests served cocktails and canapés as they await the happy couple’s arrival from the villas. At the opposite end of the gardens, the café-restaurant edging the lawns hosts elegantly decorated receptions dinners, with options of French-Asian fusion courses, buffets or barbecues. ABSOLUTE PRIVACY Complete privacy is ensured with this area blocked off and resort policy of one wedding exclusivity per day.

For ultimate privacy however, there’s the aptly-named Grand Villa, a luxurious gated, four-bedroom residence, where smaller ceremonies (maximum around 30 guests) take place on lawns flanked by swimming pool and ponds festooned with rose petals. Beyond Villa Air Bali, Indian Ocean beaches, world-class, gourmet restaurants and chic boutiques of trendy Petitenget and neighbouring Seminyak are a five-minute drive away – that’s if you can bear to leave your sublime Balinese haven.

HONEYMOON BLISS The resort’s Spa Air offers an indulgent Couples Spa Suite and ‘Royal Bride’ and ‘Royal Groom’ and ‘Honeymoon’ inclusive spa packages. The villas are divine bolt-holes, providing traditional touches yet top-notch modern comforts; bathrooms are sensuous playgrounds with Jacuzzi-bathtub, rain showers and fragrant, customized bathroom products and incense. Romantic candle-lit dinners can be set-up within the villa, or at the traditional bale beside the reflection pools. BEAUTYCORNER

MAGIC

MAKEUP

TOP TIPS TO ENSURE YOUR HAIR AND MAKEUP STANDS UP TO THE HEAT AND THE HUMIDITY Bali is a tropical playground, ideal for hosting dream weddings. However, when planning a destination wedding you need to remember that the makeup, hair and styling resources available here may be very different from the products and services you would find at home. For this reason brides may choose to bring their own stylist to ensure their look matches the idyllic location and leaves them glowing with confidence. MAKEUP Sweltering heat and humidity can wreak havoc with your wedding day makeup so its best to choose a water-based foundation that won’t melt. I personally prefer to give my brides the celebrity treatment and use airbrush makeup which is applied through an air compressor machine and is completely water and rub resistant. It provides a light flawless finish and a natural glow, and best of all it lasts up to 14 hours, so you don’t need to worry about touching up. HAIR Using a silicone sealant followed by a smoothing serum and medium hold mousse will help somewhat, but nothing will really stop hair from soaking up the humidity. If your hair is long enough I would suggest wearing it up, even if its just pinning a few pieces. If you really have your heart set on wearing your hair loose, put a flower, fascinator or a headpiece (i.e. Kim Kardashian) so that you have something to hold it in place. In this way the hair is controlled, so that when (not if) the humidity hits it, there’s not enough left loose to really get big and frizzy. Choosing the right makeup and hair artist on your wedding day will ensure your signature look lasts the distance on the most special day of your life. Understanding humidity and using the right products as an artist are the keys to a beautiful, confident, and radiant bride.

NIRWANA SPA @ PAN PACIFIC NIRWANA The road to Nirwana leads through verdant rice fields that give way to the rolling greens of one of Bali’s top golfing spots and beyond that the Indian ocean. Here, where land meets sea, perched on the windswept craggy cliffs of Tabanan, sits a lone open air bale, its fluttering white drapes softly framing a view of the famed temple of Tanah Lot. Enjoy a signature massage for two followed by canapés and Champagne as you watch the sunset over the picturesque temple that rises from a rocky island. A full range of treatments are also available in the main spa building, which provides a quintessentially Balinese setting with its charming courtyards, fountains and ornate statues and private treatment rooms. SPOTLIGHT: NIRWANA RITUAL This traditional Indonesian treatment incorporates timeless beauty rituals from the royal places of Java and includes the use of sandalwood, turmeric and ground nuts. A deeply relaxing Balinese massage is followed by a green tea scrub, and a cool, refreshing and lusciously creamy avocado and yoghurt body wrap, which leaves my skin sleek and silky. After, I am left to float in a stone bath filled with flower petals before being smothered in jasmine body lotion. I am too relaxed to leave, but thankfully the ritual isn’t over, instead I am led to the attractive spa lounge for a pot of warm ginger tea and an invigorating reflexology session.

Treatment pavilions nestle on the river banks amidst rock pools and a waterfall fed by holy springs. Como Shambhala goes beyond pampering, offering a 360 degree holistic experienced tailored to individual needs. SPOTLIGHT: AFRICAN JUNGLE BODY RITUAL This treatment evokes the scents and vibrations of Africa with its use of a sweet, nutty oil, extracted from the kernels of the sacred marula tree which grows on the plains of southern Africa. For thousands of years African women have used this highly absorbent oil as a deep, vitamin rich moisturiser to combat the dryness of the dessert. The treatment begins with an invigorating brown sugar scrub enriched with marula kernels, tea tree and jojoba oil, to slough off dead skin cells. The rhythmic caress of maraccas signifies the start of the massage, their strong vibration helping to rebalance body and soul. LEGALVOWS

HOW TO MARRY IN BALI WHILE BALI MAY BE THE ULTIMATE DESTINATION FOR A DREAM WEDDING IN PARADISE, IT’S A PARADISE GOVERNED BY LAWS NONETHELESS. AS A RESULT, IF YOU WANT YOUR WEDDING TO BE LEGALLY RECOGNISED THEN YOU NEED TO COMPLY WITH A FEW CERTAIN REQUIREMENTS.

M

ost importantly, your faith must be one of the five recognized by the Indonesian government - Islam, Hindu, Buddhist, Catholic or Protestant. Being of a different faith, e.g. Jewish, classifying yourself as an agnostic or atheist, or being of a different faith to that of your partner is not an option. Religion aside, certain documents must also be in order and some forward planning is essential. With the exception of Muslim marriages, a ‘Notice of Intention to Marry’ must be filed with the Civil Registry Office in the regency that you are staying in, and a ‘Certificate of No Impediment’ must be prepared by your Consulate or Embassy. Enlisting the help of an agent or wedding planner can help smooth the way and leave you with more time to enjoy the natural beauty of the island, or maybe indulge in a little retail or spa therapy. When it comes to the big day, two ceremonies are necessary to create a legal marriage: firstly a religious ceremony conducted by a priest or minister of the couples nominated religion, followed by a civil ceremony, which is officiated by the Civil Registry Office and can be performed directly at the religious ceremony for an additional fee. Those of the Muslim faith need just one service, which is officiated by the Office of Religious Affairs. Many couples are lured by the rich culture and traditions of the island and prefer to have a ceremony that captures the spiritual essence of Bali rather than one that is legally binding. When supermodel Kate Moss was planning her dream wedding, she was said to have been drawn to the bohemian simplicity of a Balinese style ceremony, and didn’t care whether it was legal. If the colour and pageantry of a Hindu festivity appeals, you can dress in traditional costumes, feast on Balinese delicacies and have photos taken at one of the islands picturesque temples. Or opt for a Balinese blessing ceremony, a simple ritual involving purification, prayers for health and happiness, and offerings to the spirits. As these ceremonies are not legally binding there is little need for documentation, just names of both parties and the witnesses.

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR A LEGAL MARRIAGE IN BALI Requirements vary according to each nationality and religion, but as a general guide the following are necessary for all foreigners getting married in Bali.

• Passports (valid for six months from entry into Indonesia) • Copies of passports for witnesses • Copy of Decree Absolute if divorced • Copy of Death Certificate of former spouse if applicable • Copy of Documentary evidence of any change of name

• Completed booking form, wedding arrangement form and civil form

ADDITIONAL DOCUMENTS BASED ON RELIGION muslim

catholic

The ceremony is led by a Minister called a Penghulu and is officiated by the Department of Religion. A book of marriage will be issued which is legal in Indonesia and other countries. A person of non Islamic faith marrying a Moslem is required to convert to Islam before the marriage.

This is a religious ceremony led by a priest and a number of supporting documents are necessary. Participants must not be divorced (except if the former spouse is not a Catholic.)

• KTP for Indonesian citizens • For Indonesians, a letter of single status from Lurah /Kepala Desa • Completed Forms N1 N2 N3 and N4

christian

& protestant

This is a religious ceremony led by a Pastor and requires relatively little documentation. A marriage certificate will be issued by the Pastor in Indonesian and English.

buddhist This ceremony should take place at a Vihara (Buddhist temple) and be led by a Pandita or Buddhist Monk.

• Baptism certificates • Letter of freedom from parish priest in country of residence • Letter of delegation from parish priest • Canon investigation from parish priest Amber Chia - International Model & Actress

balinese hindu A series of ceremonies need to be followed and the couple must both be of Hindu faith. Conversion to Balinese Hinduism requires a Sudi Wadani Ceremony and a declaration in writing that you intend to hold the Hindu religion of your own free accord.

• Permit letter from Consulate • Statement letter that bride and groom intend to get married in a Hindu ceremony and to hold the Hindu faith of their own free accord.

• Copy of birth certificates (legalized by a Solicitor) • Letter from parents/guardians stating there are no objections to the marriage • Legalised written statements confirming status of individuals (single, divorced, widowed etc).

P O S T S C R I P T

We couldn’t have chosen a better location for our wedding. Bali has an amazing energy and without exception, every person we met had a huge smile. The architecture and design really lends itself to weddings - we found the attention to detail incredible. We don’t take ourselves too seriously; it was a relief to find the Balinese people embrace that! I cannot recommend Bali enough for a wedding. Whether it be romantic, beach, villa -or just plain silly!! - Heather & Mark -
