am often asked what the best performance item is to start with on a car or motorcycle. I usually reply that it is best to start with the driver; a high performance car needs a high performance driver. Many people will spend money on vehicle performance, instead of improving driver performance. I know, that means you have to acknowledge that part of the problem lies with you, and it is easier to blame the vehicle. Think about yourself as a performance part of the vehicle. If your technique is not in tune to get the maximum performance from your vehicle, you are wasting money by wearing out the car at an advanced rate, and going from point A to B at a higher risk than is necessary. Whether your interest lies in reducing gas and maintenance costs, being able to avoid accidents or the joy of taking it to the limit on the track, the right techniques are important. There are people who travel many thousands of miles a year in all kinds of weather, throughout the country, without an accident. If you knew what they knew, and followed those principals, wouldn’t you experience the same results? I have demonstrated on a variety of tracks that a well-driven, stock, lowpowered car can go faster than a poorly-driven, modified, high powered car. The great thing is once your skill level is at a higher level it keeps improving and adapting. So if you get a new car, you don’t have to buy all new ‘go fast stuff’ for it, because…wait for it…YOU ARE THE PART THAT MAKES IT PERFORM BETTER! I started GO 4 IT Services, Inc. because I wanted a school that could take a brand new driver, step by step, at their own pace all the way up to the highest level techniques. Whether it would be in a car, motorcycle, truck, bus, or RV, I wanted to be able to help them move to the next level and achieve their goals.

We have found a part that when removed and modified dramatically increases the performance of your vehicle. It’s called THE OPERATOR! So join me and let’s really make the nation a better place to drive. GO 4 IT!

WOMEN IN AUTO RACING R a c i n g e n thusiasts have watched with interest as Danica Patrick has taken another step in the journey of female racers with her recent Pole Position at February’s Daytona 500. This hailed the first Pole Position for a female racer in the race’s history.

Although women have racing roots dating back to the early twentieth century, it was not until the late 1940s that women made an impact in the United States. Before the commonly known female racers of today, such as Ashley Force Hood, Katherine Legge, and the afore-mentioned Danica Patrick, there was a generation of racers who competed against the men numerous circuits.

Championship in 1977, 1980, and 1982, becoming the first person to be a three-time Top Fuel champion. In 1977, Janet Guthrie broke barriers as the first woman to qualify and compete in both the Indianapolis 500 and the Daytona 500. Guthrie competed in eleven IndyCar events in her career, including the Indianapolis 500 three times. She appeared in 33 races–the Daytona 500 twice–achieving five top-ten finishes in a five-year period in NASCAR Cup racing.

Sarah Fisher’s career in the IndyCar circuit was nothing to sneeze at. At age 19, she was the youngest women to ever compete in the Indianapolis 500 in the year 2000, and the first to complete a full IndyCar series schedule in 2001. Today, she operates her own racing In 1949, Sara Christian put pedal to the company, “Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing”, medal in NASCAR’s first Strictly Stock race. which competes in the IZOD IndyCar series. On a three-quarter mile dirt track called These are just a few of the many women the Charlotte Speedway, Christian became who have paved the way for the female auto the first woman to compete in a NASCAR- racers of today. This brings us back to Danica promoted race. She would eventually Patrick and her Daytona 500 Pole Position compete in seven races and notch two top accomplishment. Though her day did not ten finishes. end with a win, she did accomplish two other Shirley Muldowney, sometimes called the “First Lady of Drag Racing”, was another innovator in auto racing. In 1965, the NHRA licensed Muldowney to drive a Top Fuel dragster; the first woman to achieve this. She would win the NHRA Winston World Points

Out at Unser Racing! The Colorado Motor World Crew had a chance to go to the Oil & Water Go-Kart Challenge charity event at Unser Racing in February. This event was created to raise money for the Cody Unser First Step Foundation. The primary purpose of the fund raiser was to build five hand control go-karts that can be used at Unser Racing by drivers who do not have the use of their legs. These five karts are wrapped in the logos of the Cody Unser First Step Foundation, On Target 4 Veterans, Cooper Tires, Famous Dave’s BBQ, and one left to be decided. The event was attended by several members of the Unser family: race car drivers Al Unser, Jr and Johnny Unser, Shelley Unser, and Cody Unser. The evening included great music from the PB & Js, plus delicious food from Famous Dave’s BBQ. At the end of the night, attendees had a chance to race against Al Unser, Jr. An amazing event to benefit an amazing cause!

A great resource for those planning for the upcoming travel and recreation season. COLORADOMOTORWORLDMAGAZINE / APRIL 2013 / 7

2014 Chevrolet By James Brohamer

On

any given year, manufacturers roll-out new vehicle models accompanied by slick marketing slogans and shiny new sheetmetal. However, very few of these vehicles manage to stir up little more than marketing hype and gently-modified versions of previous platforms. Occasionally, a new vehicle does come along, rising above the clamor and delivering a completely new perspective on what an exceptional sports car should be. For decades, Corvette followers have watched Chevrolet lightly re-work models, from one platform to another, with very little evolution and virtually no revolution. The 2014 Corvette Stingray C7 promises to change all of that. Chevrolet bills the C7 as a “New Corvette”. Rightly so, as GM completely engineered and designed the new Stingray from scratch. In fact, only a handful of 2013 C6 components even made their way onto the C7. These were the best elements from the C6’s technology, sourced from top-of-the-line Z06 and ZR1 components. Chevrolet has announced that it will offer the 2014 Corvette Stingray in both Base and Z51 coupe trims, as well as in a convertible trim. Chevrolet designers did an ace job redesigning and reproportioning the C7’s exterior. But the new Stingray’s interior and performance are what will enable the C7 to become the first American sports car, in a very long time, to really challenge imported competitors. The C7’s exterior elements are far enough away from previous models to completely redefine its image. Nevertheless, the C7 retains design elements that indicate it’s still the land-shark flagship that it has always been. From the front, the Stingray looks like a ‘Vette with a long, sloped hood-line, aggressive styling, and a sinister looking front fascia

and headlight treatment. The C7 carries well proportioned creases, swells, and vents along its entire profile. The carbon-fiber hood and roof compliment a stretched and visceral profile which chisels its way into a modest B-pillar, flowing into a rear quarter window and eventually meeting a rakishly designed rear. It’s that quadrupled taillight and trapezoidal taillight design that especially set the Stingray apart from its predecessors. Rear styling can only be described as aggressively potent, especially for a Corvette. Four distinct, trumpet-like tailpipes bolt squarely in the center of the rear; matched with the Corvette’s traditional four-lens configuration on the taillights, the design language simultaneously indicates both conventional and next generation styling. For decades, Corvette interiors have failed to impress both in quality and comfort. It seemed that buyers were expected to accept cheap plastics, bland styling, and the lack of anything even remotely tied to comfort. Fortunately, the C7 offers quality more akin to an Audi

or Porsche rather than that found in the C6’s basic rental-fleet inspired interior. Chevrolet states that the C7’s interior is the most updated part of the new vehicle. Judging from initial impressions, the interior re-design was time well spent. The Stingray’s interior is most likely one of the finest American sports-car interiors ever made. All features are entirely driver focused and include high quality, soft-touch materials, body-hugging seats, and comfortable yet sporty details. Controls, switches, and the navigation system are all angled toward the driver. Buyers can upgrade to aluminum, leather, and carbonfiber trimmings, improved sport-seating, and a number of other high-end accouterments. Yet, even base-model interiors won’t fail to impress. Overall, Chevrolet has successfully matched the Corvette’s distinguished driving experience with an interior previously only found on European offerings. Whatever the C6 lacked in exterior styling and interior quality, it more than made up for in driving performance. Unfortunately, the C6’s potential was only realized on the track and in the hands of an experienced driver. The 2014 Stingray promises to change that by delivering the same blistering > Continued on pg. 14

CAR REVIEW >> A Look at the

2013 FORD FUSION Ford has long been known for a successful line-up of coupes and sedans, often aimed at families. These vehicles usually provide comfortable, dependable transportation with budget-conscious pricing. The 2013 Ford Fusion is a strong contender in the midsize car market, recently winning the U.S. News & World Report ‘Best Car for the Money’ in that segment. The 2013 Ford Fusion is fully redesigned and available in seven models: S, SE, Titanium, SE Hybrid, SE Energi,Titanium Energi, and Titanium Hybrid. There are 10 color options, ranging from basic Oxford White to classy Bordeaux Red. At starting MSRPs ranging from $21,700 to $40,200, and a modest 22 city/34 highway mpg (47 city/47 highway for hybrids), the 2013 Fusions are loaded with a variety of standard features, along with offering a range of optional features. Standard for the S and SE models is the SYNC® with MyFord® voice-activated communications and entertainment system. With the latest-generation SYNC® with MyFord® Touch technology, you can give your car numerous commands by voice (i.e. making hands-free phone calls, playing your favorite music, getting turn-by-turn directions to your destination). It also comes with 911 Assist, which can call for help if you have been in an accident. The AM/FM Stereo with CD player is MP3 compatible. Other optional features include adaptive cruise control, Active parking assist, rearview camera, and blind-spot detection. The Titanium model comes standard with the SYNC® with MyFord® Touch system, rearview camera, Intelligent Access with Push-Button Start, and dual-zone temperature control. The leading-edge Fusion Hybrids are fitted with an electric motor, an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (eCVT), and lithium-ion (Li-on) batteries. All Fusion models come standard with antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, and multiple air bags. Also standard is the Ford MyKey which can be set with specific safe driving parameters for teen drivers. All available engines for the Fusion line are fourcylinders, changing from the previous year’s 3.0L V6. This has created a car that is not only fuel efficient, but also has surprisingly solid power. It is available with six-speed automatic or manual transmissions.

Our tested vehicle was a 2013 AWD Fusion Titanium with the 237HP Ecoboost engine. The engine is extremely powerful and the handling is especially crisp and comfortable for this size car. The six speed automatic transmission is very smooth and very quickly finds the correct gear. Braking is smooth and firm. The interior is very well designed with driver and passengers in mind. Even a long trip should be no issue considering the comfortable leather seats. Important buttons and knobs are all easily within reach of the driver. Legroom in the back seat was not an issue even for our larger team members. Although it is about a cubic foot smaller than last year, the trunk should hold a decent amount of cargo for everyday grocery trips, handling the kids’ sports gear or packing luggage for a trip. The rear seats fold down to allow for larger items. We were impressed with the wide range of electronic safety devices installed on the car. We experienced first-hand the self parking feature, lane departure warning, and blind spot warning systems. We tried several time to initiate the crash avoidance feature, but could not ‘almost crash’ well enough for it to warn us. Overall the car is well appointed and fun to drive. Special thanks to Mike Naughton Ford in Aurora for allowing us the use of this test vehicle.

Purchasing Your Next Car This multi-part series will take you step-by-step through the process of purchasing your next car; from researching the right vehicle for you to taking care of your investment. This month we will discuss the best ways to research a new or used vehicle purchase.

In

automotive industry lingo, auto buyers move through a purchase. A consumer’s biggest challenge is no longer the lack of available information, but rather that of having too much information and what to do with that information. Buyers who would have taken three months to move through the purchase funnel in 1995 can now complete the entire process in less than two weeks. Moving too quickly through the process can result in purchasing a car that does not meet the buyer’s needs. Staying focused, knowing where to find the right information, and carefully completing research can reduce or eliminate buyer remorse. The vehicle shopping process is a dynamic process. Buyers should add and remove vehicles from the list depending on what features and options best meet individual needs. IDENTIFY YOUR NEEDS Begin the vehicle search by identifying which class or segment, and make and model fits identified needs. Magazines (print and online) are good references for list development. Consumer Reports (Consumerreports. o r g ) ; U S N e w s & Wo r l d Reports (Rankingsandreviews. com); Motor Trend (motortrend. com); Automobile Magazine

(Automobilemag.com); and Car and Driver (Caranddriver. com) are excellent information sources. These publications produce annual vehicle reviews, rankings, and rating guides. Next, create a list of features and group these features into two categories: Must-Have Features and Desired Features. Include safety features and ratings, vehicle options, fuel economy, price, and total ownership costs in the list. SAFETY, SAFETY, SAFETY The National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration (NHTSA, safecar. gov) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS, iihs. com) list crash-test results and safety data for all makes and models. These websites provide side-by-side vehicle safety ratings and crash-test result comparisons. They also list safety technologies which will help drivers avoid accidents, protect passengers, and ultimately result in better safety ratings. RESEARCH FUEL ECONOMY AND FEATURES The US Department of Energy (fueleconomy.gov) allows buyers to conduct side-by-side fuel economy and environmental rating comparisons. Manufacturer websites provide information on what features, options, trims, and packages are available. Several websites are useful for side-by-side make, model, option (trim), and total ownership cost comparisons, as well as vehicle pricing, and determining model availability and dealer location. Edmunds. com, Cars.com, Autotrader.com, and KBB.com are good thirdparty aggregators of reviews, features, price, and availability. The National Automotive Dealers Association (NADA, NADAGuides.com) is an excellent resource for both new and pre-owned buyers. NADAGuides.com provides

model (by year, current and historical), features, price, and total cost of ownership comparisons. Another great information source is RL Polk (polk.com), which publishes an annual Owner Loyalty Award ranking. Polk.com lists which manufacturers realized the greatest owner loyalty as measured by the number of owners who traded-in the same make or model for a new vehicle from that same manufacturer. JD Power and Associates (jdpower. com) produces useful, annual new-vehicle rankings in a variety of categories which include initial quality, dependability, customer satisfaction, fuel economy, and performance ratings. COMPILING YOUR INFORMATION Creating a list of desired models and features will help eliminate buyer remorse and ensure that the purchased vehicle meets specific needs. Approaching the process methodically, and allowing for more time to research each vehicle may lengthen the buying process timeline but will deliver a more satisfying ownership experience.

NEXT MONTH: Researching an Auto Dealer.

C7 ; Continued from pg. 9

performance but in a technology package which makes it more accessible in everyday driving conditions. The new Corvette will still produce mind-bending feats on a track, but it will also generate sufficient performance during a weekend drive or on an open highway. The C7’s shark-like nose houses an all new, direct-injection, 6.2-liter, small-block V-8 engine which pushes out an estimated 450 horsepower and thumps out 450 lb-ft of torque. The standard C7 engine delivers 20 horsepower and 26 lbft more power than the outgoing C6 engine. Branded as the LT1 engine, it will propel the Stingray from 0-60 mph in under 4 seconds and deliver top speeds of 180-190 mph. The LT1 engine includes an Active Fuel Management system, delivering EPA estimated fuel mileage of 26 mpg city/highway (combined). The LT1 engine mates to either a six-speed automatic or seven-speed, Tremec manual. The manual transmission features active rev-matching on both down-shifts and up-shifts, but can be deactivated. The six-speed automatic features steering-wheel mounted paddle-shifters. The C7 should handle much better than the outgoing C6. The new Stingray features electric power-steering matched with a smaller steeringwheel. This should make for better cornering, reduced driver motion, and less engine drain. The C7 sports a beefier rack-and-pinion set-up than the C6. Chevrolet claims that the reengineered the steering system results in a fivefold increase in stiffness. A Driver Mode Selector (DMS) on the center console adjusts driving dynamics. Drivers can select performance settings for snow and rain, eco, tour, sport, and track-only. DMS adjusts the active exhaust system, automatic gearbox shifting (if equipped), cylinder deactivation, gauge cluster information, launch control, limitedslip differential (on Z51), magnetic shocks (if equipped), traction and stability control systems, and the throttle. In addition to DMS, the Stingray offers a fivesetting, adjustable suspension which potentially

delivers a range of driving dynamics. The topsetting essentially makes the C7 track-ready by stiffening the suspension, deactivating traction-control, and revising steering ratios. All Stingrays come with the multi-part aluminum frame assemblies previously found on the Z06 and ZR1. Chevrolet claims this new set-up delivers a 99-pound weight reduction and a 57-percent stiffer frame over the old C6 hydro-formed steel frames. Weight distribution is claimed at an even 50/50-percent split. The C7 also saves weight and provides finer suspension-tuning on behalf of hollow, castaluminum lower control-arms found in the front. Three shock options are offered and include magneto-rheological Magnetic Ride Control as an option on the Z51. Even base Stingray’s will stick to a surface when pressed, achieving more than 1.0g of cornering grip. The Z51 trim includes performance underpinnings like an electronically controlled, limited-slip differential, and closer manual gearbox ratios. Additional aerodynamic body parts should better the Z51’s track performance while a dry-sump lubrication system should prevent oil deprivation while racing. The Z51 features larger brakes with additional cooling and staggers 19-inch by 8.5-inch front and 20-inch by 10-inch rear wheels. The Michelin Pilot Super Sport run-flats included on all Stingrays were developed specifically for the C7. The 2014 C7 surpasses the outgoing C6 on every level. The C7 exhibits a notable exterior and finally delivers an interior which befits a flagship sports car. Chevrolet’s “New Corvette” ushers in an entirely new chapter in American sports car history, and it promises to be one of the best chapters yet.
