Everything is sprouting up green and blooming again! Spring is here, and with Earth Day right around the corner on April 22nd. It seemed fitting that this issue of SheSpark be dedicated to all things natural.

We love fashion and beauty, but we don’t want it to come at a cost to Mother Earth. Did you know the fashion industry is the second biggest polluter of our planet behind oil and gas? Or that plastic microbeads in skincare products were polluting our oceans and the beads are now outlawed? It’s time to start making better choices for the planet.

Eco-Friendly Fashion: Turn Blue Jeans Into Green

by Thea Wood (@Over40Style) As a college student in the 1980’s, I remember when Earth Day was all about recycling beer tabs, turning off water while brushing your teeth, and rolling down the car windows instead of using A/C. No one ever told me that the 10 pairs of jeans I bought cost 29,000 gallons of water to produce.

I didn’t believe it at first, but numbers were pretty consistent across various sources, including the Environmental Protection Agency, noting that ~1,800 of those gallons were for growing the cotton needed to make a single pair of jeans. It breaks my heart when I think of how many jeans I donated (80% of which still end up in a landfill) or tossed as my weight changed and trends evolved throughout the years.

An advocate for healthy bodies and a healthy planet, Suzy Amis Cameron (54) walks the walk when it comes to preserving Mother Nature. In fashion circles, she’s best known for her Red Carpet Green Dress project— see Sophie Turner in a Green Dress for the second time. Suzy and Vivian Westwood supported emerging designers last month with an open call to an internship opportunity. Suzy’s main focus is teaching the health and environmental benefits of plant-based eating. She co-founded MUSE School, which became the first 100% plant-based lunch program in the U.S. last Fall.
