P ROJ ECT B R I EF The brief spoke of constructing a house in Basavanagudi, Bangalore; contemporary building with minimal lines and materials.

The Neighborhood The site is situated in the heart of Bangalore encompassed by an excellent neighborhood comprising of various vistas on the street. The vast canopies of the trees and wide asphalts accommodated a free development. COURTESY : GOOGLE MAPS

site and context The site has a significant presence in the context with diverse factors that has direct implications on the design. The apartment abutting the site on the north side blocks view and also demands privacy. Whereas a single storey house and a large expanse of the footpath along with the road ensures clear view to the south-east. With its large foliage, the avenue of trees along the access road acts as a shade, screen and a metaphorical meadow at different levels.

The design is shaped around the concept of making visible the architecture as an interface between habitation and landscape.
Architecture becomes organic when it comes to relation between habitants and nature. This house also interprets the relation in a way which it acts as a medium between the context and the space.
Context is the limit within which the building moves around. If it fails to communicate with eachother, then the scope of everything lacks there.
The image above indicates that buildings are also responsible to adapt with the context.
The architect tried to capture the surrounding environment into the bulding

Based on the same idea of random glass divisions, the two images differ in the thickness of divisions provided. Scale and proportion plays a major role as the basis for these divisions.
Glass blocks express dense lines which in turn help distort the trees in view right behind the facade. The lines also provide a language and help read the scale better.
With a different take on using glass as a facade material, the dior showroom uses frosted and clear glass with curtains behind which reduces the transparency and gives a milky white texture to the building.

The 2.5m high louvres form a pattern and break away from regular vertical louvres. The recessed balcony has glass shutters which filters in natural light and protects the space inside from the sun.
WO O D above: cove way house bedmar and shi, 2010 Wood is universally beautiful to man. It is the most humanly intimate of all materials. - F L Wright
Wooden louvres in this tropical house act as screens which sheild from the sun and rains. Use of horizontal bands, connected by sleek verticals at the rear double as pivots. Interesting division of the panels and additional grooves accomodate air movement.
vertikales 0 1 0 below: diagonal 197 david chipperfield architects, 2013 Using pigmented concrete (coloured with metal oxides) David Chipperfield brings in subtle colour variations to highlight the vertical divisions on the facade. It is a one-time finish material with low maintenance.
CONCRETE bottom center: binh house vo trong nghia, 2016 Concrete is used complementing the lightness of the structure with minimal solids, also articulating the vertical division.
Using sustainable materials such as natural stone, wood, exposed concrete combined with the microclimate, this house reduces greatly the operational and maintenance cost. Green spaces at different levels ensure passive cooling and help in providing a breather in high density localities.
vertikales 0 1 1 top right: bosco verticale, milan stefano boeri, 2014 At a towering height of 364 ft, the two towers of bosco verticale house roughly 900 trees on the terraces. The building itself is self-sufficient and uses renewable energy from solar panels and filtered waste water to sustain the building’s plant life
T H E G R EEN top: atlas hotels vo trong nghia, 2016 Integrated with the living space to ensure a smooth transition from the adjacent vegetation.
bottom: green renovation vo trong nghia, 2013 In response to the increasing number of vehicles and population, VTN has added a green cover over their buildings as a comfortable living environment for both the residents and neighbours.

vertical fins expressed on the facade break the otherwise monolithic mass.
very strictly following the rule of thirds, the building effortlessly breaks the square like mass with vertical structural supports expressed on the facade.
following the rule of thirds, the recessed glass wall at the bottom helps cut down the scale. the same proportion can be seen expressed in the verticals as well.
an intermediate band of steel cuts the solid brick mass at the bottom and the glass above.

a steel structure on stilts, this weekend cabin subtly follows the rule of thirds further broken by divisions for the glass. cladded in steel and divided into onefourths vertically, the detatched super roof helps express the lines of the structural steel members.
with a steel box detached from the mass expressing the structure, the horizontal and vertical lines are carefully highlighted as thick and thin bands of steel members. lines are further expressed through the glass divisions and frames.

supported by a central core, and a pair of extremely thin columns, the horizontal bands stand out in this residence.
as the renovation of an old house, the horizontal bands with varying thickness break the facade and add an element of interest to the otherwise ordinary mass. the larger car park void at the bottom helps read the building as a lighter mass lifted from the ground.
the decreasing height of the railings and elimination of the walls on the ground floor render the structure very light with maximum views to the garden
