Extended volume expressed by recessing vertical walls. Mass looks lighter.

Providing a recess in the volume renders a sense of lightness to the building while incorporating pockets of green space / balconies.

The design follows the concept of expressing horizontal planes. Taking into consideration the brief, the overall height of the building is something that cannot be reduced. Hence, introducing horizontal planes helps cut down the scale of the built mass.

Basic studies done on the proportion of green incorporated help understand their impact on the overall space. 01 The site, located in Basavanagudi, Bangalore is surrounded by an urban context and some of Bangalore’s trademark trees / greenery. Surrounded by residences, the narrow end of the site faces the Old Veterinary Hospital Road.

02 The program, covers a built up area which when extruded, forms a Ground + 4 massing . With the ground floor allocated for car parking, the rest of the functions of the residence are split among the rest of the floors.

03 The massing follows a concept of expressing horizontal planes in order to render a “ light “ feel to the otherwise heavily loaded structure.To achieve this, the vertical load bearing walls are restricted in length while floor slabs are projected out in the form of canti lever slabs at different levels.

04 Having the exterior walls / functions fill the entire floor slab while functionally ideal, work against the spatial experience and the concept of rendering a light structure. The vertical supports are reduced as per requirement/ necessity.

05 The floors slabs are further divided into multiple thinner slabs in order to break up the mass and scale. Individual planes are joined by tapered joints to achieve very sleek edges. This also helps provide some relief and texture to the facade.

06 The Exterior walls / panels are offset in order to create pockets of space on all floors that provide some relief in the form of large balconies. This helps in channelising natural light and ventilation while providing a buffer from exterior elements.

Volumetric Explorations

Extruding the bare site with no punctures or additions gives one an idea of the height / overall volume needed to accomodate the requirements.

Guided by the overall concept of design, the mass is evolved into a basic form. This helps understand the overall scale / proportions keeping in mind the functionality of the space.

The volumetric explorations within the floorplates helps understand intermediate spaces which in turn form spaces of relief witihn the built mass. Programs are designed around these spaces internally.
