AL RAHMA MOSQUE
AL RAHMA MOSQUE CORNICHE ROAD
Jeddah, situated in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is situated off the coast of the Red Sea. The corniche road , a 2.4 kilometer ( approx. ) stretch along the sea hosts a plaza and other religious buildings / parks / plazas and aesthetic sculptures that are frequented by both the locals and tourists alike.
CORNICHE ROAD
The brief requests a comprehensive landscape design proposal around the proposed Formula 1 street circuit that will engage the crowd and will in-turn become an integral part in the urban fabric of Jeddah post the F1 season. The site is divided into individual zones based on the program and their locations with respect to the existing road network.

• The future city vision for Jeddah has identified the intervention site as a T.O.D ( Transit Oriented Development ) for densification (mixed land use - tourism, sports & recreation). • Jeddah’s Red Sea corniche with the F1 event doubles as a catalyst for brand creation with respect to the city’s identity. • Placemaking exercises to attract residents, visitors and tourists help in achieving the vision.
Placemaking inspires people to collectively reimagine and reinvent public spaces as the heart of every community. Strengthening the connection between people and the places they share, placemaking refers to a collaborative process by which we can shape our public realm in order to maximize shared value. Reviewing the overall landscape design proposal based on these pre-set principles helps us understand that more than 50 percent of the principles are met through the design.

DESIGN STRATEGIES The F1 Dune 12
A. CHOREOGRAPH URBAN LIFE With multiple defined pathways and other break - out spaces that offer varied experiences, the overall concept of the landscape design works towards engaging different communities.
B. INTEGRATE ART AND CULTURE Pockets of spaces are designed in order to install sculptures and other art installations with cultural significance.Exhibition and gallery spaces in varied scales are woven into the promenade in the form of open plazas and stepped seating in an attempt to promote local artists.
C. OFFER VARIED EXPERIENCES Varied user experiences are curated by utilising different colours, textures and sizes with respect to the plants and hardscaping materials selected. Programs and zones are clearly demarkated by varying the proportions of the hardscape with respect to the softscape.
D. ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES Introducing activities such as street markets and themed restaurants within the promenade offer platforms for local artisans and other vendors to reach a larger user base.
E. INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES The promenade is designed to inspire innovative technologies that can be incorporated into the landscape elements such as digital reading pods and drone points.
F. ESTABLISH A UNIQUE SKYLINE The landscape proposal for the sea-front and promenade development aims to serve the city of Jeddah in the long run and become an integral part of its urban landscape by taking into consideration a few key factors while developing the concept.
04 A
Design Strategies 13
Inspired by the famous sand dunes of the Arabian desert, the promenade along the coast creates a unique skyline for the city of Jeddah THE LIGHT OF JEDDAH.
G. BE ASPIRATIONAL AND ACHIEVABLE All elements are designed and conceptualised taking into consideration the process of execution with respect to the materials and overall construction method.

Landscape pockets as pause points along the path
By establishing a basic checkered grid on the existing landscape zones, the primary pathway is demarkated by taking into consideration the route that can be easily navigated in a particular area. Furhter, a secondary ribbon is introduced as a weave that intersects the primary pathway at strategic points. Pockets of spaces derived from this exercise on either sides of the main pathway are used as sculpture gardens / gathering spaces/ children’s play areas and other group activities.

Deformed grid to generate experiential hierarchy
Inspired by the famous F1 checkered pattern, landscaped areas including parks, plazas and other networks are designed along a strictly structured grid. In order to generate varied experiences, the grid is strategically deformed by warping. This creates pathways of varied widths that are further detailed with plants of varying scales, colours and textures.

MODULAR UNITS
EMBEDDED ENERGY
FLEXIBLE PLACEMENT
Modular units help in reducing the overall project cost with respect to production by maintaining standard details.
By integrating technology such as solar panels and wind harnessing equipments into street furniture and other urban components, the overall energy used can be controlled, thus ensuring a semi-self sustainable sytem.
Modular components also ensure versitality with respect to varied spatial experiences that can be controlled by different iterations.
SUSTAINABILITY THROUGH DESIGN Following the idea of “ lesser the better “, segregated and independent components of the street furniture and technical control systems are interated into a single modular product that can be manufactured in a kit of parts method and later assembled at the site.

The promenade is covered by a roof system that follows a simple geometry of a bent planar surface. This approach ensures that different spatial experiences are provided for the users as the roof structure doubles as seating spaces. The twisted wooden form responds to both sides and is a pre-fabricated modular structure.

The twisted planar surface that forms the roof of the promenade behaves as a pergola / shading structure where seating and other permanent roofing are not required. Having climbers and creepers that are suited for desert climates run over these frames helps in blending the “ dune” into its surrounding landscape.

Product Selection Strategy
Execution Strategy
3I (iii) (Information, Interactive, Identity). The strategy for lighting design is based on these three principles
Modularity, Flexibility, Identity. Product selection is done based on the modularity in the fixture to suit to various applications and also provide the flexibility to design.
Key principles in choice of technology Wireless and Hybrid (Centralised and Distributed ) Architecture - will enable ease of installation and reduce cabling.
Lighting & Control 116
Speed of Light
Undulating movement of waves
F1 Jeddah City Street Circuit will create an electrifying atmosphere to the Jeddah City Center . The lighting intent depicts the speed in form of lines which are dynamic and also highlight the architectural design forms.
Lighting of the promenade is inspired the movement of sea waves. The dynamism and relaxation these waves inspire the design concept for lighting of the promenade and the architecture.
Design Abstraction 117
Information This design approach focus on providing safe functional lighting as well as guarantee guidance and information for the users
Lighting Concept 118
Interactive This lighting intent extends the experience of F1 into pavements, parks and outdoor sports areas with dynamic and interactive lighting and light art installations
Identity This design intent provides harmony between the speed of F1 and to the lighting experienced in the promenade, sports courts, parks lagoons and amphitheater.
