BEACH-FRONT DEVELOPMENT
L O C A T I O N LAKSHADWEEP IS A TROPICAL ARCHIPELAGO OF 36 ATOLLS AND CORAL REEFS IN THE LACCADIVE SEA, OFF THE COAST OF KERALA, INDIA. NOT ALL OF THE ISLANDS ARE INHABITED AND ONLY A FEW ARE OPEN TO VISITORS. THE CAPITAL KAVARATTI, IS WELL KNOWN FOR ITS PRISTINE WHITE SAND BEACHES AND CALM LAGOONS, WHICH MAKES IT A POPULAR TOURIST DESTINATION.

S I T E A N A LY S I S AS IS THE CASE WITH OTHER ISLANDS OF LAKSHADWEEP, KAVARATTI HAS WARM SANDY BEACHES. THE LAGOON LOCATED TO THE WEST OF THE ISLAND IS BEST SUITED FOR SWIMMING, KAYAKING, WIND SURFING AND CANOEING. IT IS FILLED WITH STAR FISH, ANEMONES, SEA CUCUMBERS, COUNTLESS MULTI- HUED FISHES AND CORALS. AN INITIAL STUDY OF THE PROPOSED SITE HELPED UNDERSTAND THE EXISTING SITE CONDITIONS WITH RESPECT TO THE ECOSYSTEM. THIS STUDY ALSO DIRECTED THE EXTENTS OF THE INTERVENTION WHICH AIMS TO PROVIDE A BETTER BEACH FRONT EXPERIENCE WHILE AT THE SAME TIME HELP CONSERVE AND ENRICH THE EXISTING CORALS AND MARINE ECOSYSTEM.

CONSTRUCTION STRATEGIES DUE TO THE HIGHLY SENSITIVE NATURE OF THE SITE AND THE NEED FOR ADDING VARIOUS BUILT STRUCTURES IN ORDER TO FULLY MAXIMIZE THE POTENTIAL OF THE INTERVENTION, SPECIAL STRATEGIES NEED TO BE ADOPTED SO AS TO AVOID DISPLACEMENT OF THE FLORA AND FAUNA. THE FOLLOWING STRATEGIES ARE USED TO MITIGATE THIS.
S T I LT E D C O N S T R U C T I O N WHEREVER POSSIBLE, A SYSTEM OF ISOLATED FOOTING BLOCKS WITH RAISED STUBS ARE USED TO SUPPORT THE BOARDWALKS AND THE CONNECTED STRUCTURES, SO THAT THE DISPLACEMENT OF THE NATURAL GROUND IS REDUCED BY MORE THAN 80%.
GEOTEXTILE REINFORCED SANDBED & GRADE FOOTINGS ARE PROPOSED TO BE PLACED ON WOVEN GEO-TEXTILE REINFORCED SAND-BED BASE TO MINIMIZE SETTLEMENT DUE TO THE EBB AND FLOW OF WATER, AS WELL AS PROVIDING A GEO-TEXTILE SANDBAG BASE OVER THE CONCRETED STRUCTURES BELOW GROUND, PRIOR TO BACK FILLING OF SOIL SO AS TO REDUCE EROSION OVER THE FOUNDATION STRUCTURES.
S P E C I A L LY E N G I N E E R E D M AT E R I A L S
USE OF ENGINEERED WOOD FOR PATHWAYS, STRUCTURAL FRAMEWORK PRECAST CONCRETE ELEMENTS HAVING LOW WATER PERMEABILITY AND STEEL WITH DUPLEX TREATMENT SUCH AS HOT-DIP GALVANIZATION AND PAINTED COATINGS ARE PROPOSED TO PREVENT CORROSIVE ACTION, AS WELL AS MINIMIZE MAINTENANCE.
MODULAR CONSTRUCTION A MAJORITY OF THE ELEMENTS OF THE PROPOSED DESIGN INCLUDING STEEL, CONCRETE PANELLING AND OTHER FINISH ELEMENTS, ARE TO BE SPECIALLY DESIGNED WITHIN A MODULAR FRAMEWORK, SO AS TO MAKE WAY FORA METHODOLOGY OF OFF-SITE CONSTRUCTION AND ON-SITE ASSEMBLY. THIS FURTHER REDUCES THE TIME REQUIRED AND QUANTUM OF ON-SITE ACTIVITY, THEREBY MINIMIZING ITS IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT.
PHASING THE BREAKING DOWN OF THE DESIGN PROPOSAL INTO VARIOUS PROGRAMMATIC ZONES , ALONG WITH ITS VARIABLE ANCILLIARY PROGRAMS, CREATES A VARIETY OF OPTIONS FOR STAGING THE CONSTRUCTION INTO VARIOUS PHASES,THEREBY ALLOWING MUCH REQUIRED TIME AND SPACE FOR THE SURROUNDING TO ORGANICALLY ‘GROW IN’ TO THE NEWLY CREATED ELEMENTS.
