The Project
The programmatic requirement including 5 bedrooms, 3 different living rooms, a gym and a media room meant that the entire buildable envelope had to be maxed-out. Apart from the requirement, the client insisted that he didn’t want the house to appear like, nor feel like an apartment both from outside and inside.
4
The challenge, apart from ‘fitting-in’ the requirements was the need to bring down the scale of the house. After a rigorous process that lead to several options and iterations; organizational and flexible grids to accommodate the functions and services, the ground and the first floor was conceived as a monolith with the last floor hovering over the top.

Vertical links were established through a double height foyer and a cutout over to link the Family Room grid to the the two adjacent grids. Crafting the spaces, required us to research various materials for their texture and feel; choose appropriate furniture and systems and an elaborate exercise for lighting and building automation.

Projects like these are a collaborative effort - from the architects who design and the client who places his trust, the skilled and the unskilled labour that goes into making it to the several consultants and specialists - in this case, automation, HVAC, landscaping and lighting. Though for most of us, this opulence of furniture and systems was a learning in itself, the importance of applying the fundamentals of design at every step was critical.

The client was also particular about using natural wood (preferably teak) throughout the house, which had its limitation, as the house had larger-than-usual openings to let in ample daylight. On-site customization for this also would become a laborious task. Moreover, options in using different systems for natural wood were limited

The house has state of the art technology working behind the scenes and all electro-mechanical aspects of the house - from security to power management, lighting, HVAC, communication, data, plumbing and even vacuuming with integrated IOT(internet-of-things) programmed - can be controlled with just one app which runs on a smart phone.
