The Heart of the Herd – The Females

If you have gone through and read the footnotes, you will notice that nearly every bull’s dam gets some mention. That’s because we truly love and value our females! Over the years, we have spent a lot of time, energy, and money, selecting the females that will continue to improve our herd. Always keeping our environment and end goals in mind, we have focused on breeding for moderate sized cows, structural soundness, cow efficiency, calf performance, EPD improvement, and, of course, eye appeal. We have been ultra-sounding our yearling females for almost 20 years and that data also helps us evaluate and improve the females. And, just like our Registered herd, our commercial females undergo the same scrutiny! Our cows are expected to cover the country and breed back each year in a timely manner. They have to be good, moderate-sized mamas with udders and teats that hold up over time and they have to raise calves that will generate money for us, whether we sell them as bulls, market steers/heifers or retain them as replacement females.

As a result of our efforts, the quality of heifer calves continues improving. Each Fall after weaning, our normal routine is to evaluate and sort our heifer calves into 3 basic groups – Keepers, Sale replacement heifers and market calves. Twenty years ago, this was a “bottom heavy” split, with us usually only keeping the top 20-25 head and selling the rest at the Sale barn, for replacements or feeders. However, times have changed and so has our herd. We are getting “topheavy” with more and more quality heifers. So, this year we are offering the following several pens of those replacement-quality heifers.

BUT – what makes him REALLY stand out is his scan data – He ratioed 104 for REA, 79 Ratio for FAT and IMF Ratio of 158. A high-performance bull with a neat look to him. He’s been one of my favorites from the get-go and is always there to help me unload the feed into the feed bins.

A higher percentage Gelbvieh (80%), out of a 12 year old cow, who is pregnant again with her 11th calf! This guy is a super performance bull, with a great set of EPD’s – top 20% for WW, 15% for YW. This bull would be my pick to replace his sire, FHG Leverage. This guy definitely has herd bull potential! Just a solid bull, with a good EPD profile. These Dirt Road sons tend to exhibit a tad more muscle shape, are good on their feet and legs, and should pass both qualities on to their offspring. His scan data indicates that he will pass on more marbling than what his EPDs show.

A tad higher Gelbvieh percentage, with an IMF scan data that was off-the charts (128 IMF ratio). He’s an attractive, deep-sided bull, with a lot of flex to his movement, so he can definitely cover the country. Plus, his numbers indicate he could probably be used on heifers as well.

A younger calf out of a good young PB mama, so he’s got a tad higher Gelbvieh percentage. His EPD profile and pedigree indicate he will make calves that come easy and still have some growth. Plus, his maternal traits are in the top 10%.

This one has been a favorite of ours since his first few days! One of those calves whose actual numbers are much better than his EPD profile – with a 96 ratio for BW, 104 for WW and 109 for YW, with a ratio of 134 for IMF! What makes KickAss is unique is his phenotype – his thickness, combined with his exceptional rib, just sets him apart! His mother is a Dam of Merit and has been nicknamed “Cleopatra” – as in The Queen. Her impact on our herd has been profound and she just keeps churning out superior cattle, as is evidenced in her two sons - BNW Granger 9126G and BNW Jimbo 1138J. (Note: This cow lost a quarter of her bag last year from a rattlesnake bite and she STILL weaned a 740 lb calf on of a bag!)
