Wilkinson Gelbvieh 2016 Private Treaty Bull Sale
It’s that time again! Almost 20 years ago, we were selling our bulls by private treaty with a special Saturday to start things off. In 2014, we returned to that format and have really enjoyed it! We think our customers do, too.
Saturday, March 26, 2016 Kick off Saturday Wilkinson Gelbvieh Ranch Private Treaty Sales 10:00 am until Noon - view bulls Noon – lunch provided 1:00 pm – Bid off *** *** This “bid-off” is not an auction – simply a very low-key way for individuals to compete against other to get the bull(s) they want. Basically, each bull will have a floor price posted and we will go through each bull, one by one. Anyone interested in the bull at that price will indicate that interest with a raised hand. We will increase the price by $50 increments until only one hand is left in the air, and, at that time, the bull will be declared sold. All bulls will have been ultra-sounded, PAP tested, certified as Trich-free and have passed a breeding soundness exam. As such, they will be eligible to go anywhere in the United States. If you cannot take them right away, we can figure out something to keep them around a little longer, at a minimal charge. If you want to take them on Saturday, brand and health and brand papers will be ready to go.

“NEW AND IMPROVED” GELBVIEH / BALANCER EPDS What they mean to YOU The American Gelbvieh Association’s (AGA) EPD’s are now based on a new collaborative national cattle evaluation (NCE) with the American Simmental Association (ASA). With this collaboration, we are now on the same base with Simmental and Red Angus. • EPDs for Gelbvieh, Balancer®, Simmental, SimAngus, and Red Angus can be directly compared to one another, • Calving Ease and Calving Ease Daughters EPDs reflected as percentages of unassisted births, • True multi-breed EPDs provide more complete Balancer EPDs, • Growth traits are more reliable with wider age window for weaning weight, • Carcass traits are standardized to an age-adjusted endpoint like the rest of the industry.
MATERNAL TRAITS
Calving ease direct (CED): Percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease. Milk (Milk): The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight. Calving ease maternal (CEM): Represented as percent of unassisted births in a sire’s firstcalving daughters. A higher number represents more favorable calving ease.
GROWTH TRAITS
Birth weight (BW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight of the calf. Weaning weight (WW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning. Yearling weight (YW): Predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling.
CARCASS TRAITS
Yield grade (YG): Differences in yield grade score, which is a predictor of percent retail product. Smaller values suggest that progeny will have a better lean to fat ratio. Carcass weight (CW): Differences in pounds of hot carcass weight, adjusted to an industry standard age endpoint. Ribeye area (REA): Differences in ribeye area in inches between the 12th and 13th rib. Greater ribeye areas are preferable. Marbling (MB): Predicts the differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye as expressed in marbling score units. Greater marbling numbers are preferable and are an indicator of higher carcass quality grades.

NOTE - With our limited space, we did not include ALL EPD’s and indexes, nor did we include each bull’s EPD accuracy. Because these bulls are young and un-tested, most of their accuracies are fairly low and based on their parent’s accuracies. This additional information is available on the AGA website, by searching by registration number OR using your smart phone, to scan the individual’s QR code, which will take you straight to their full pedigree INDEXES - Indexes are tools that allow you to select for several EPDs at once, making selections more efficient than selecting on one trait at a time. Indexes weigh traits based on their importance to a producer’s bottom line by using a trait’s economic and genetic value. Total maternal (TM): An index that combines growth and milk information as a prediction of the weaning weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughters. $Cow: This index represents the genetic value in dollars of profit of an animal when retained as a replacement female relative to other animals in the herd. A higher number represents more profitable genetics for maternal productivity. Feeder profit index (FPI): An economic selection index designed to aid producers in selecting sires whose progeny will perform in the feedlot and are sold on grade and yield. Well ranking sires for FPI have higher marbling and carcass weight than their contemporaries. As a terminal index, little emphasis is put on maternal traits such as stayability and calving ease. Efficiency profit index (EPI): An economic selection index developed to aid producers in selecting for more feed efficient cattle that still have acceptable amounts of gain. The EPI provides slight negative pressure on intake, while keeping gain at a constant value.

This bull does a lot of things really right! A big powerful bull, going way back to a long line of cows, that have been extra good for us. He has strong carcass EPD’s, with the expected performance for those heavy calves at weaning. CE

We think this guy is one of the most phenotypically, complete bulls we are offering. His EPD’s are wellbalanced, nearly all are above breed average. His sire is Stampede (one of our “tried and true” herd sires, that we are now using semen on) and his mother is a superior donor cow. Homozygous polled CE

The youngest bull in the Sale, but with one of the highest WW ratios this year. He’s out of one of by absolute favorite cows, so feel totally confident he will make some great females, as well as feeder calves. Half brother to Lot #27. Homozygous polled. CE
