Wilkinson Gelbvieh 2019 Private Treaty Bull Sale

W

elcome to our 2019 Private Treaty Bull Sale! First of all, we would like to thank you for your support and interest in our program. This year’s selection of bulls is the strongest and deepest we’ve ever offered. We started with about 80 registered bull calves and culled down to the 37 we are offering. It was a tough decision on quite of few of the calves, but we strongly feel that you deserve to have the “cream of the crop!” So, check them out here, as well as the videos (wilkinsongelbvieh.com or www.DVAuction.com). We are proud of our offering and hope you will appreciate them as much as we do. Wilkinson Gelbvieh has been breeding Gelbvieh cattle since 1986. Our cattle run in an environment that currently requires 100 acres/cow, with all types of terrain and forage. From the very beginning, we have strived to raise cattle that are functional in all three phases of the cattle industry - cow/calf, feedlot and rail. We have emphasized structure, udder quality, calving ease, performance and temperament. We believe that our environment and its requirements result in a superior product, by “weeding” out those cattle that simply don’t work here. We feel that when all things are equal, our cattle will match up with anybody’s of any breed. We also use AI extensively, as well as ET, so that our cattle can be compared with all Gelbvieh/ Balancer cattle throughout the US.

We are a fairly small crew for our 250 head (150 registered and 100 commercial). Bill and Nancy manage the daily workings of the ranch, with much-needed “weekend help” from Sydney, who teaches Ag. Education in Kim, Colorado (about 1 1/2 hours from home). Several years ago, we made the decision to “up our game” and get back to focusing on raising bulls and marketing them through a Sale. Although Its definitely increased our work load, it has been worthwhile and we feel that we these bulls are evidence of the increased focus. Thanks again! We’d love to see you this Spring, even if you just want to stop by for a visit and maybe get a look at our cattle. Bill, Nancy and Sydney

Kick off Saturday

Wilkinson Gelbvieh Ranch Private Treaty Sale Videos of bulls can be viewed on the Wilkinson’s website:

www.WilkinsonGelbvieh.com or at www.DVAuction.com

10:00 am until Noon - view bulls Noon – lunch provided 1:00 pm – Bid off *** Contact Numbers: 719 846-7910 (Home) | 719 680-0462 (Bill) 719 680-0451 (Nancy) | 719 680-7910 (Sydney) *** This “bid-off” is not an auction – simply a very low-key way for individuals to compete against other to get the bull(s) they want. Each bull will have a floor price posted and we will go through each bull, one by one. Anyone interested in the bull at that price will indicate that interest with a raised hand. If more than one person is interested, we will increase the price incrementally, until only one hand is left in the air, and, at that time, the bull will be declared sold. We will be including bids over the phone, as well as bids left prior to the Sale. Reminder: This is the Opening Day of our Spring Bull Sale season! Being here simply gives you “first choice” at our offering. Any bulls remaining will be available until all are sold; their price determined by the Opening Day’s average sale price.

The Bulls The bulls have been developed at home in a 3 acre trap. As such, they have had lots of room to travel and have been walked through and handled on a regular basis. All bulls are PI-BVD free and have been ultra-sounded, PAP tested and passed a breeding soundness exam. (Trich tests, if required, will be done at buyer’s convenience and our expense. SEE BELOW!) Supplement sheets with PAP scores, scrotal measurements and any other updates will be available the week prior to the Kick-Off Saturday. Bulls will be eligible to go anywhere in the United States. If you cannot take them right away, we will work with you to keep them around here a little longer, at a minimal charge. If you want to take them on Saturday, health and brand papers will be ready to go. We will work with each of you to get the bulls to your place. Since the bulls are at home, feel free to give us a call anytime and we will be happy to have you walk through the bulls at your convenience. Then, return again for the Opening Day! If you can’t make it that day, we can hold a bid(s) for you OR you can come later and see what bulls remain. Reminder - this is just the “Kick-Off” to our Spring Private Treaty Sales. Traditionally, we sell anywhere from 1/3 to 2/3 of the bulls, with a lot of good bulls remaining. Guarantees: • Sight Unseen Purchases are Guaranteed - “If you don’t like ‘em, you don’t take ‘em!” • Bulls are guaranteed for one Breeding Season or one year, whichever comes first. (Disclaimer - Negligence voids guarantee) Note: Wilkinson will retain 1/3 semen interest on all sale bulls. If any bull shows potential for AI use, we would like to collect and market his semen, at the buyer’s convenience. Note: In cases where a Trich test is needed, we can keep the bulls and have them tested here, then work with the buyer for delivery OR the buyer can take the bulls and have them tested at their home vet, and bill us.

Gelbvieh and Balancer EPD Averages Spring 2019 AGA’s EPD’s are now based on a National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) collaboration with the American Simmental Association (ASA) and the American Red Angus (ARA). With this collaboration, our EPD’s are on the same base as these breeds, allowing Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle to be compared directly with Simmental and Red Angus cattle. Additionally, DNA testing is currently being incorporated into EPD’s as well. This is still a “work in progress,” as the AGA is learning how to best incorporate individual animals’ genomic testing into the years of hard data, to better calculate their EPDs. As a result, the EPD’s reported in this catalog may change again - before and/or after they are sold.

MATERNAL TRAITS Calving ease direct (CED): Percent of unassisted births, when used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease. Milk (Milk): Genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk, in pounds of weaning weight. Calving ease maternal (CEM): Percent of unassisted births in a sire’s first-calving daughters. A higher number represents more favorable calving ease. GROWTH TRAITS Birth weight (BW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight of the calf. Weaning weight (WW): Predicts expected difference, in pounds, for weaning weight Yearling weight (YW): Predicts expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight CARCASS TRAITS Yield grade (YG): Differences in yield grade score. Smaller values suggest that progeny will have a better lean to fat ratio. Carcass weight (CW): Differences in pounds of hot carcass weight. Ribeye area (REA): Differences in rib-eye area in inches. Greater ribeye areas are preferable. Marbling (MB): Predicts differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye. Greater marbling numbers are an indicator of higher carcass quality grades. INDEXES - Tools that allow you to select for several EPDs at once, making selections more efficient than selecting on one trait at a time. Some equate those traits into a dollar amount. Total maternal (TM): Combine growth and milk information to predict weaning weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughters. $Cow: Represents genetic value of profit of an animal when retained as a replacement female, as compared to others in herd. A higher number represents more profitable genetics. Feeder profit index (FPI): Represents how a bull’s progeny will perform in the feedlot, when sold on grade and yield. Well ranking sires for FPI have higher marbling and carcass weight than their contemporaries. Maternal traits are not really a part of this index. Efficiency profit index (EPI): Helps select efficient cattle that still have acceptable amounts of gain.
