Many injuries in sports lead to extensive controversy about whether a franchise player should remain on the field of play or be sidelined. These players are highly drafted with large paychecks and investments, and teams formulate specific strategies and play around these high-profile players to keep them healthy to play for years to come. The dependence on high visibility and the loss of a franchise player can significantly impact a long successful drive to a championship and even pursuit of a dynasty. The loss of time and investment with the loss of a player can devastate a season and the future direction of a franchise. Sports stars are subject to intense physical and mental demands.Their successes can end in the blink of an eye with a sudden career-ending tragedy, and if not, in very few years, lead to lifelong deterioration of crippling chronic physical pain and permanent disability at a very young age.The worst of these injuries are repetitive head trauma and concussions leading to memory loss and early dementia. We are all guilty of cheering these athletes on and pouring money into tickets and memorabilia to celebrate their achievements which is ultimately the culmination of these players' dreams to be the best at their craft and revered, preserved in history as a hero of the game. This pedestal we place these players on can come crashing down when a significant injury occurs.
How do we protect these players and their dreams, as well as their future health, when the stakes are so high? Those of us who love sports want to emulate our childhood sports heroes as we watch their achievements but are well unaware of the price their bodies pay after a few years of intense physical abuse.
As I look at Pat Mahomes in the divisional game against the Jaguars, Mahomes suffered a “high ankle sprain,” usually a 4-week or more recovery, depending on the severity.Ahigh ankle sprain affects the ligaments in the upper ankle with varying degrees of injury, from “stretched” to a complete tear. If a player is lucky, like Mahomes, it will only be a stretched ligament and not a tear.
Setting the stage in the middle of a divisional game where the stakes are high and the championship and season are on the line, millions of dollars spent. The eyes of the world are on the player, doctors, and coaches, and all subjected to criticisms on all levels. Should the player be taped up, injected, and pushed out and roll the dice and chance a season or career -ending injury or be placed on injured reserve? The player plays a role in the system also, adrenaline high, refusing to leave the game for evaluation, pushing through pain, in danger of permanent career-ending injuries. How does the system operate behind the scenes?
The process is way more complicated than what everyone imagines. The focus over the last few decades has improved to preserve the player's best interest, especially at the pro level, where billions are at stake.
The stakes are high at all levels of sports teams, and to quote an article, “a 2016 study found that 8.6 million people, ages 5 to 24, have a sports injury every year in the United States. Researchers note males ages 5 to 24 make up more than half of all sports injury episodes.
The lower body is most likely to be injured (42 percent). The upper extremities make up 30.3 percent of injuries. Head and neck injuries combine for 16.4 percent of sports injuries.
Deaths from sports injuries are rare. When they happen, they’re most likely the result of head injury.” (Healthline.com, article by David Heitz, from an article CDC.gov, National Health Statistics Report, Issue 99, Nov 2016)
The fact that injuries are so common and knowing that injuries are such a huge factor at all levels, at the pro level where the stakes are at their highest, how does it work? I reviewed an interesting article by Dan Pompeii, Bleacher Report, December 2017, Inside the NFLSecret World of Injuries. He examines the injury process and points of view of doctors, trainers, owners, GMs, coaches, players, etc., and it’s more complicated than one can imagine. Overall, it’s a positive process to protect the players and the franchise. The approach, though, cannot be oversimplified.
He looked at the injury processes of several teams from 2017 and a few other examples of well-known player injuries from that year The morning after a game, the line for the cold tub and saunas, massage, and evaluations by the trainers is extensive. Players are known to hide their symptoms and tell the trainer one thing and the coaches something different to avoid being placed on injured reserve.Trainers, doctors, and coaches often make difficult decisions going against the player's will to continue despite severe injury, not to be viewed as weak or to feel they let the team down if they don’t continue. Most trainers and coaches spend all Monday andTuesday after the weekend games evaluating a long list of injuries and what the new week’s team will look like going into the next round. Each team now has up to 30 medical personnel, some independent as to keep the safety of the player at the highest level. There is a meeting of all coaches and medical personnel an hour before each game to plan for the event of injury severe injury, as seen with the Buffalo Bills Damar Hamlin’s cardiac arrest, which was orchestrated perfectly and Hamlin’s life saved due to the intense pre-planned medical team strategy meeting before the game. Some players don’t know the difference between being a little hurt and when to jog it off and severe injury requiring injured reserve as these players are afraid to lose their job. Coaches approach injury from the perspective of “can my player still be effective?” In actuality, medical personnel admits it’s rare now for players to be pressured into playing past their injuries, and backup players are well-recruited and trained to be an integral component of a team’s plan for long-term success.Teammates are also encouraged to be ever watchful and supportive of each other and protect each other against themselves and any pressures to perform past their obligations and injuries. Things have certainly changed through decades of experience and education.
The scope of the player injury evaluation process is far too large for the content of this article. Still, as we watch, entertained each week, rest assured, your heroes are watched closely, and we must respect the player's efforts of putting their health and safety on the line for their dreams and our enjoyment. The respect for their efforts and sacrifices is unlimited, and the powers that be appear to be behind them.

In a year dominated by the largest talent of quarterbacks I have ever seen, I have to admit the top of the NFLquarterback talent belongs to Patrick Mahomes, who was named both NFLMVPand Super Bowl MVP. Whether you claim Brady as your G.O.A.T. or clammer to revel in the glory days of Manning or Montana et al.… you must admit this young QB is on his way to infamous status.
In a high-scoring game, a great defense against a great offense, Vegas had the odds on the Eagles. The Eagles had a nice cushion up 24-14 at halftime, but a revved up Mahomes, heroic turnaround with an aggravated high ankle sprain, and Chiefs in their usual fashion, made the ultimate comeback in the second half earning Mahomes double honors of MVPboth overall in the NFLand Super Bowl LVIIEagles fans are concerned about a questionable call rounding out the Chiefs win but ultimately would have made an Eagles win a long shot but Eagles fans would have been happier with a long shot than none. The second half was clearly awarded to the Chiefs in effort. Super Bowl 2023 was historic in that both starting QBs were BlackAmericans, two brothers as players on opposing sides, an team of 7, all female, U.S. NavyAviators in an historic pre-game flyover to start the show.
Overall the thrill of this Super Bowl is the lack of total domination by one team. I never saw a moment where it was clear who would win, and up until the end was on the edge of my seat and watching two fantastic teams and generational-defining players on both sides giving their all.
Next year's mix of a vast class of outstanding quarterbacks, QB controversies such as will be in San Francisco, looking to new QB players take the helm after other generational QB exits like Brady and sights on players likeAaron Rogers and predictions of his future, etc…, I find it hard to believe any year will match this year in excitement. Will the Eagles repeat, and what will happen to the Chiefs… a dynasty in the making? You thought Mahomes and the Chiefs would fail at the loss ofTHill… I pray next year will surpass this year.
My first Sunday today without football is somewhat of a withdrawal, and our eyes now turn to drafts, new recruits, coaching changes, and spring training as the sun sets on the 2022-23 season. Congrats, Chiefs, and condolences to Eagles fans as we look to the 2023-24 season to duplicate or surpass.
See you next year, football… sigh.

The path that led Mayra to the world of boxing began 7 years ago. After the birth of her second daughter, Mayra found herself facing depression, until her sister suggested that she go to a boxing fitness class and that is where her love for the sport of boxing began
Mayra started training more frequently and found that being in a boxing gym was just what she needed to get her confidence back and not long after that she began to have a swagger about her As she became a regular face at her gym, she was asked if she wanted to help train the fighters, and so she began sparing with them.
As a few months went by the boxing coaches noticed that Mayra had something special. They invited her to begin training as an amateur fighter, and this awakened her passion for boxing.
Mayra began training as a fighter, and was committed to giving her all to the sport of boxing, the harder the training got the more dedicated she became, and she began to realize that this is what had been missing from her life and she knew that boxing was what she was meant to do. Mayra found herself wanting to be involved in the world of boxing in any way she could, so when she was asked to be a ring girl for some of the local fighting promotions she agreed and that is how she got her fighting name Mayra “The Ring Girl” Rodriguez.

My name is Zack Borrego and I’m a professional mixed mar al ar st. I grew up in a mar al arts gym as my father owns a gym on the southside of San Antonio called The Dojo Karate Academy. From a young age I picked up tradi onal karate, which is my founda on system, but I also have competed in Taekwondo and later as a teenager in full contact kickboxing and Muay Thai events
All of which we train at our gym.
Although I have always loved mar al arts, my first real high school and later went on to play at Angelo State San Antonio and got back to training with no real
love was football. I played at Harlandale University. A er college, I moved back to hopes of compe ng.
During Covid 19 my training picked up a lot. My job went to a work fromhome schedule which gave me more me to train. It was during COVID when I decided to commit to this a bit more. I started my amateur career in early 2021 and had my last amateur fight one month before 2022. I finish as an amateur 4-3 and had fought over 3 different weight classes. Although my last amateur fight was a loss, I ended up going pro in February of 2022.
The first 4 months of my pro career were really fast as I picked up 2 first round finishes and 1 unanimous decision victory over a Bellator vet. This earned me a short no ce fight in the UFC as a part of Dana White’s: Contender Series. I ended up figh ng against another highly an cipated prospect, Bo Nickal, which I lost.
Although this loss was a setback and the first in my pro career, it has taught me more about myself then any win has. The experience I gained in that fight has made me change so much about my approach to figh ng which mentally has forced me to grow as a fighter.
My next fight is here in San Antonio at the Techport Center and will be the day before the UFC event on Saturday. It’s a very highly an cipated fight as my opponent is an undefeated prospect. Not only does this fight have high stakes but a lot of UFC execu ves will be watching the fight and choosing people for the next UFC opportunity. You can watch live by ge ng your ckets at furyfc.tv or on UFC Fight pass.
Not only do I fight, but I also love to teach and be at my gym giving back as much as possible. Its very hard to make me during fight camps, but when I do I am constantly reminded of the amount of support I get not only from my gym but the southside as a whole. I fight with pride knowing where I come from has very humble beginnings and plan on being someone that people from my gym can always relate to, reach out to, and be reminded by that you can compete at the highest levels

O’SHAQUIE FOSTER SHOCKSTWO-DIVISION CHAMPION REY VARGASTO WIN VACANTWBC SUPER FEATHERWEIGHT WORLDTITLE IN SUPERB DISPLAYOF BOXING LIVE ON SHOWTIME® IN PREMIER BOXING CHAMPIONS EVENT
Former Champion and SanAntonio Native Mario Barrios Stops Jovanie Santiago In Co-Main Event from theAlamodome in SanAntonio,Texas
Unbeaten Heavyweight Lenier Pero Stuns, Finishes Viktor Faust in WildTelecast Opener
SANANTONIO,TX. – February 12, 2023 – With the words “ice water” and “shock the world” etched on his trunks, O’Shaquie Foster produced the fight of his life, coolly and methodically out-boxing two-division world champion Rey Vargas to capture the vacant WBC Super Featherweight World Championship in his first title shot live on SHOWTIME Saturday, February 11 from theAlamodome in SanAntonio,Texas in a Premier Boxing Champions event. Foster, who normally switches to southpaw in his fights, fought orthodox for the entire 12 rounds with the objective of befuddling Vargas, as he won by scores of 116-112, 117-111 and 119109 in a dominant, albeit very competitive win.
“I can’t put it into words (what this means),” Foster said in the ring afterward. “I know my mom, my uncle, my grandpa, they are all looking down on me.”
Foster, a veteran of four SHOBOX:The New Generation bouts®, has overcome countless hardships in his life, including the death of his mother to cancer when he was 12. He lost a decision in just his ninth fight on SHOBOX and dropped a split decision three fights later. But Foster fought confidently and relentlessly on Saturday, as if he was the undefeated fighter entering the fight, peppering Vargas with jabs and out-working him in the later rounds. With the win, Foster became the 88th SHOBOX alum to win a world titl
According to CompuBox, Foster threw 101 more punches than Vargas and landed 43 more shots (22 more jabs and 21 more power punches). In the championship rounds, with Foster’s trainer Bobby Benton asking him to close the show, Foster out-landed Vargas 32-10 to secure victory
“It feels great,” Foster went on. “Dedication, hard work. I have a great team around me. Getting away from the distractions and preparing myself mentally and physically. My preparation was very important. I saw a lot of tape. I threw combinations. I knew that he counter reacted to previous opponents. I tried to switch up my technique.
“My coaches kept telling me to pick it up, we are ready to go. We can’t get them out, but I felt good in the later rounds. I just wanted to make sure it wasn’t a close fight. I didn’t think it was close. My coaches kept telling me not to let off the gas. I’d love to unify [the division]. I’ll face anybody.“
Vargas, who disputed the decision, indicated that he will drop back down and campaign at 126 pounds, where he still holds the WBC belt. “We didn’t get the decision at super featherweight,” Vargas said, “but we are still champions at 126.“
Foster, who has fought at 130 pounds or heavier for most of his career, stunned Vargas with a left a minute into the 11th, as swelling under Vargas’eyes was evident. Vargas landed a three-punch combination midway through the ninth as he began to fight with desperation. But Foster answered with a short right hand that seemed to buzz Vargas.
Vargas sustained a small cut over his left eye after Foster landed a snappy right hand and the two clashed heads moments later with a minute left in the third. Foster caught Vargas with a jab to the body to start the second that caused Vargas to fall to the canvas, but the referee ruled it a slip as Foster stepped on Vargas’foot during the sequence.
“I respect the judges,” Vargas said in the ring. “I think this decision was not fair. I don’t agree with it, but I have to respect it. I thought it was much closer than they saw.The weight difference may have affected me tonight. In boxing, you can use your legs to be technical or use them to run. Foster used them to run. He ran all night.
“There was a headbutt at the beginning of the fight that affected my sight for a second, but I recovered quickly. I thank all the fans that came out to support me.”
Vargas fought without a familiar face in his corner as legendary trainer Nacho Baristain was absent for this assignment as Vargas’father Carlos took his place. He was trying to join other legendary fighters who have won titles at 122, 126, and 130, which include Manny Pacquiao, Leo Santa Cruz, and Mexican legends Erik Morales and MarcoAntonio Barrera.
Vargas was returning to theAlamodome after winning the WBC featherweight championship in his last bout with a decision victory over Mark Magsayo at the same venue on SHOWTIME last July
Former champion and SanAntonio-native Mario “ElAzteca” Barrios snapped his two-fight losing streak with a razor sharp, career-rejuvenating performance against Jovanie Santiago in Saturday’s co-feature. Barrios dropped Santiago in the eighth round with a left to the body and followed up, causing referee Mark Calo-Oy, upon the request of Santiago’s corner, to stop the fight at 1:42 of the eighth of their welterweight contest scheduled for 10 rounds. Barrios led 70-63 on all three judges’scorecards at the time of the stoppage.
After Santiago (14-3-1, 10 KOs) touched the canvas for the fourth time of his career from the body shot, Barrios, who is back with top trainer Bob Santos, followed up with a straight right hand that snapped Santiago’s head back, causing his corner to step in.After losing his last two fights to top talents Gervonta Davis and KeithThurman, Barrios (27-2, 18 KOs) had his way with Santiago, who was also coming off backto-back losses toAdrien Broner and GaryAntuanne Russell.
The CompuBox stats backed up Barrios’dominance. The 27-year-old landed 90 more punches than the gutty Santiago, who actually out-threw Barrios by a single punch. Barrios landed 39 more jabs, 51 more power punches and looked super-charged throughout the fight, buoyed from the hometown crowd and his own desire to get back into the win column.
He hurt Santiago with a right hand a minute into the sixth round, causing Santiago to briefly sag into the ropes. Barrios stunned Santiago again with a left to the body and head moments later as Santiago looked battered, his right eye badly swelling. Barrios landed a lunging left hook to end the sixth as Santiago somehow remained on his feet.
“It feels amazing,” Barrios said afterward. “It took me a while to get into that groove, to get that rhythm. I felt great. I wouldn’t say I was different [tonight], but definitely with a larger arsenal. I’m pretty thankful to have Bob [Santos] in my corner and my sister. I had to get just as physical. That’s another thing we have been working on in the gym. I knew Santiago was coming with it.And he took the fight in my backyard. That says a lot about him. He’s a hell of a warrior, I tip my hat to him.
“I felt myself breaking him down little by little. I just had to be patient. My counter right hand is something that we’ve been working on at the gym in Vegas. I feel I’m definitely up there with the [welterweight] elite. I still have something to prove. I promised my city a world title, and I got it in 2019 and I will do it again.”
Head Coach NBA Legend and Former SpurARLINGTON,TX, December 8, 2022--The XFLtoday announced its official rules for the 2023 season, which includes innovative changes in the areas of clock management, play reviews and late game possession designed to improve gameplay and enhance the fan viewing experience.
“Our innovative rules are the cornerstone of our League and a clear example of our commitment to advance the game,” said XFLPresident Russ Brandon. “These changes will increase possession and scoring options while remaining true to the spirit of the game."
Popular rule innovations such as tiered extra points and double forward passes will carry over from the 2020 season.Teams will also continue to line up five yards apart on kickoffs, as they did in 2020, which resulted in fewer injuries and a 92% return rate.
Among the new game enhancements is an extra possession option, where in addition to an onside kick at any point during the game, teams may now attempt to retain possession by converting a 4th and 15 play from their own 25-yard line in the fourth quarter only
This season the XFLis also introducing a first-of-its-kind, centralized ‘command center’for instant replay review and officiating led by Dean Blandino, Vice President of Officiating and Playing Rules Innovation. The fully cloud-based instant replay program offers live integration during replay reviews and oversight of officiating discrepancies during all 43 XFLgames.
“In short, we studied the positive changes in game play, player safety, and fan engagement made in 2020 and have enhanced them to make the game and the viewing experience even more engaging,” said Dean Blandino. “We are adding a new level of transparency with our officiating that no sport has ever provided, allowing us to be more consistent with our calls when there’s a flag on the play. Instead of being separated in each stadium, my team and I will be together in the command center and will be responsible for initiating replay reviews and making streamlined decisions in real time.”
Below are some of the XFL’s key new rules and modifications from 2020:
Clock will start following incomplete passes and out of bounds plays prior to two-minute warning of either half
Clock will stop following first downs after two-minute warning of either half Play clock increased from 25 to 35 seconds*
Timeouts increased from 2 to 3 per team per half*
The XFLwill operate with a 35-second play clock
No coin toss, no one-possession wins, no ties
Consists of alternating attempts from opponent’s 5-yard line
Three attempts per team (two points per score) or until winner is decided *
Two options to keep the ball after scoring
Traditional onside kick (any time during game)
4th and 15 conversion from own 25-yard line (4th quarter only)*
Head coach allowed one challenge of any officiating decision once per game, with final ruling made by designated members of the officiating department in a central location (never been done before at any level)*
Centralized replay *
Replay may correct obvious errors on non-reviewable plays, player safety at any point during the game, and any issue that significantly impacts the outcome of the game in the last five minutes of regulation plus overtime
Kicking team and return team start play five yards apart
Eliminates high-speed collisions and enhances player safety
More returns, less touchbacks
92% kick off returns in XFL2.0 compared to 39.6% in the NFL
Average XFLdrive started at the 29-yard line compared to the 25-yard line in the NFL
Tiered extra points are back
Teams will have three options for extra points following a touchdown
2-yard line = one point; 5-yard line = two points; 10-yard line = three points
Replaces the traditional kick, providing teams a chance to score more points and build excitement within the game.
If a team completes a forward pass behind the line of scrimmage, that team may throw a second forward pass, as long as the ball has not crossed the line of scrimmage
Once the ball has passed the line of scrimmage, no forward passes are permitted
Less risky because the first pass may fall incomplete rather than becoming a live ball lateral
