Hospitality Design
“The material matters. -Ellen Levin Sittig | Floss Barber, Inc.
Everyone seems to be emulating hospitality design these days. Healthcare facilities are looking for that inviting, “comforts-ofhome” feeling — more of a hotel getaway than a hospital stay. Meanwhile, designers want corporate spaces to welcome visitors and employees in a way that makes them feel comfortable instead of cold and sterile. So, with designers looking to the hospitality industry for inspiration, it invites the question: where does hospitality look for its cues? Connecting people with the character of specific locations. Simple elegance, clean lines, bold colors, unique installations — and the powerful element of lighting are the key factors driving today’s hospitality design paradigm. And 3form® translucent products are ready to deliver.

Sangria Welcome
lobby / reception / corridor
| The unique entry to the Sangria restaurant needed to welcome visitors in an eyecatching way while creating a sense of wonder. background
| The canopy material needed the perfect degree of translucence to create the desired lighting effect. It had to be available in a variety of colors and patterns to allow the architects to incorporate the color theme of the restaurant. It needed to incorporate the signage envisioned and be relatively lightweight. challenge
| Architects envisioned a floating, glowing plane that could protect visitors from the elements and provide a colorful, inviting beacon to highlight the restaurant’s prominent downtown location. The spectacular rectangular plane starts inside the restaurant, penetrates through an entrance vestibule and cantilevers to the exterior over the sidewalk. The canopy glows from within at night and is colorful and attractive during the day. A stunning way to welcome visitors, the canopy also adds life and color to the entire building’s façade. solution

Wheelhouse Bar & Grill | Wheelhouse Bar & Grill is an innovative casino sports bar overlooking the Ohio River and Heinz Field in Pittsburgh. The establishment hosts fans and revelers who can enjoy sports on more than 40 flat screens and a high-definition theater with the largest floor-to-ceiling TV in Pittsburgh. background
| The entire space needed to be designed around how the movement, sound and light of dozens of television screens are experienced. challenge
| With a bar of such proportions, no ordinary material would do. Considerations of weight, accessibility, and lighting were critical. A blue beacon solution
of light from the 55-foot bar visually draws customers in, where a series of separate spaces play off each other. The result is an engaging design of illuminated Chroma. “Chroma has the translucent quality that makes this very long bar appear to float in space,” said Floss Barber. “It’s not just some decorative piece — it’s actually structural — integrated into the form of the environment and carved like a sculpture.” “They may say they can, but no one else can do what 3form does. The material matters. And 3form is always evolving to solve new problems in partnership with the designer,” said Ellen Levin Sittig, designer.

Alta Hollywood Apartments | This 218-unit apartment complex sits in the heart of Hollywood, California, making liberal use of 3form in the Main Clubhouse, Wi-Fi Lounge and Fitness Room. background
| To create an atmosphere of Hollywood glamor without being too “obviously Hollywood” — to be dramatic while maintaining a simple elegance. challenge
| Designers made strong use of bold 3form colors, from backlit Varia Ecoresin Strata Agate panels to Chroma in Marigold with Reflect — perfectly enhancing the light from the pendants hanging over each feature. Varia Ecoresin panels in Connection Marigold were used for a glowing effect, while Chroma Mai Tai + Reflect brought stunning life to the countertop. solution

Moreton Fig | The Moreton Fig Restaurant & Lounge at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, is part of the student center complex — a piece of a larger scale project that revitalized the USC student experience. The restaurant was created as a brand new facility to serve the diverse population of the USC campus. background
| To create a high-quality dining atmosphere with appropriate lighting and ambiance in which breakfast, lunch and dinner could be served, providing a pleasant experience regardless of where the sun is in the sky. challenge
| Rick Gooding created a series of booths and banquettes, setting the whole scene off with luminous 3form lightboxes that cover three sides of the dining room as a cornice piece that also provides a division from the kitchen. The lightboxes focus light back into the seating area and accent the walnut features, providing balance and beauty. The ability to dim the LED light sources in the lightboxes to accommodate the ambient lighting was crucial to creating the perfect lighting conditions. solution
