The exterior design of a building establishes its identity and can tell a powerful narrative within the urban landscape. To tell this narrative, every building deserves a defining moment – bold color, unique materials or unexpected shapes, that sets it apart from the rest. This is what we do, and we’re here to help.
3form translucent materials enable architects to realize bold new designs transforming transit shelters into iconic elements of municipal landscape, or sound walls into artful narratives. With 3form materials, functional exterior applications become unique opportunities to bring distinctive design outdoors.

SBX || AECOM Service recently began in the San Bernardino valley on the first bus rapid transit system in the county. Omnitrans, a public transportation agency, sought Gruen Associates working under Parsons Transportation Group to design and develop stations along the Green Line for the San Bernardino Express (sbX), which connects diverse communities in two cities to centers of commerce, services, and local universities.

CASE STUDY | SBX
The challenge Known as an architecture firm that transforms communities, Gruen Associates accepted the challenge. The primary objective was to create shelters from the strong winds and the California sun. Additionally the designers also wanted to tie the communities together and create a timeless design the residents could be proud of for decades. Gruen received input from Omnitrans and local user groups to develop a design that connects communities metaphorically as well as physically. Designers envisioned shelters that would create a sense of movement while referencing the shapes of the surrounding San Bernardino Mountains with undulating shapes and angles of the shelter canopies. After realizing the complex angles and compound curves would not be viable in glass, the firm sought a new material. On a tight deadline for installation, Gruen reached out to 3form for a strong, formable translucent material that was weather resistant. The complex angles of the canopy designs required customization and accuracy. The solution Within weeks of obtaining Gruen’s drawings, 3form built 34 custom molds to realize the distinctive designs of the 16 transit canopies. The 3form fabrication team then formed 400 custom-sized Koda XT panels, produced custom steel channels to frame each piece to achieve the desired aesthetic and shipped the panels to meet the tight installation timeline. The new bus stops touch the lives of thousands and create a striking aesthetic throughout the valley. ”We knew that 3form was the right company for this job,” said Jill Wagner, Associate Partner at Gruen Associates. “Working with 3form enhanced the design process and the end result realizes our vision in a way that added value to the project.” |

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission and City of Columbus partnered to reunite the King Lincoln and Discovery District neighborhoods with the new Long Street Bridge. The challenge MKSK envisioned replacing the standard bridge fencing with an illuminated screen wall spanning the length of the bridge depicting the visual history of the local cultural heritage while also reducing freeway noise levels, screening freeway views, and mitigating gusty wind conditions for pedestrians. Through a public art competition, local artists composed a series of images depicting community builders from local history. MKSK turned to 3form to embed the black and white digital compositions in resilient Koda XT material to tell a visual story.
Strong and bright, a foundational parapet tells a powerful community story.
Photos: Gary McCauley
The solution 3form developed a custom steel framework to meet ODOT requirements, support the wall of Koda panels and mount them onto the concrete bridge parapet. 3form attached custom aluminum light boxes inside the vertical sides of the steel framework. Each lightbox held high-powered, low-profile LED light bars to illuminate both sides of the panels. This installation now lights up the neighborhood’s iconic history and culture — seen from Interstate 71 as a monolithic glowing wall or from the Long Street Bridge as a brightly illustrated journey through the community’s historic roots and aspirations for the future. |

CASE STUDY | HIGHPOINT CLIMBING & FITNESS
The challenge High Point Climbing and Fitness challenged River Street Architecture to re-skin the exterior of the building. Craig Peavy (owner of PVDesign), former partner of River Street Architecture, designed what resembled the rock face of the mountains surrounding Chattanooga with a fractured surface. Part art piece, part climbing wall, this 11,000 square foot exterior feature posed both visual and technical challenges. Attempting to bridge the gap between the technology of traditional plywood climbing walls and a new material drove the team to explore materials from perforated metal to fiberglass. “We then realized the concept was meant to be transparent and have light come through it,” says Peavy. Thus began the search for a translucent durable building material for athletes to climb on which also allowed light to pass through.
44
XTERIOR
The solution Peavy spoke to a 3form sales rep about the point load strength of the Koda material. The structural engineer Rebecca Brooks of Woods Engineering lead the charge to figure out what type of data would need to be accumulated on the Koda material to ensure that this product was a match for this project. Soon the design team was running a battery of tests at a testing facility in Atlanta to determine how much weight Koda could hold. “At the point when a 3000 pound tensile strength test was pulling on the 3form, it was causing the stainless steel bolts and washers to start to deform without failure of the 3form material, we knew we had something that would work,” said Peavy. Testing the material convinced the team that Koda was the ideal solution for this application. 3form provided close collaboration for structural analysis on the overall application. The River Street team and High Point owners consulted with 3form to create a finished solution to help continue the revitalization of the downtown Chattanooga area and attract climbers from all over. |

The brand uses the finest materials for their lifestyle products. TUMI’s iconic look includes a specific TUMI brand red that is used in signage and other environmental features. TUMI overhauled their Michigan Avenue retail store in downtown Chicago inside and out both to reflect the updated brand and keep in character with the high end look of neighboring specialty boutiques. TUMI challenged WJCA to manage the redesign including the storefront.

47
CASE STUDY | TUMI
The challenge TUMI keeps a strong focus on finished environments that maintain precise brand standards. Designers envisioned a monolithic even red glow for the storefront to further draw attention to the high-end retailer in this the prestigious shopping district and brand the company. The bold TUMI color was expected to radiate uniformly in both daylight and nighttime conditions. Additionally, WJCA needed to work closely with various approval authorities, including The Greater North Michigan Avenue Association to design a storefront that would attract attention while staying within the design standards established for the neighborhood. The solution Designers at TUMI and WJCA collaborated with the team at 3form to find the right translucent color material to match TUMI’s brand color while being illuminated. Illuminated color is a combination of the material hue and the light temperature. 3form produced several trials to achieve the exact brand standard. Additionally, with a small plenum, the designers challenged 3form to create a lighting condition that would eliminate hot spots and scalloping. The resulting installation is a glamorous and impressive match to the TUMI brand.  |

Finding the final illuminated solution to match the TUMI red included combinations of several colors, Koda XT, and lighting.

The solution 3form developed a custom structural system allowing all panels to be installed and removed independently—with no hardware removal required. The engineering also facilitated minimal engagement between the panel edges and supporting profiles, providing maximum panel illumination with minimal shadowing. The system was initially tested on a full-size prototype for evaluation and verification of panel light transmission, lighting conditions and hardware fabrication feasibility. 3form obtained in-field measurements for the installation from the installing contractor and retrofitted the data onto a full digital Solidworks model. They then used the model to produce full-size templates to lay out and index the parts relative to the existing grid for ease of installation.  |
