PERSONAL STATEMENT CHE-YI LIN
AS AN ARCHITECTURE LEARNER, THE HIGHLY PERCEPTION OF EVERY DETAILS IN LIFE SHOULD BE ACQUIRED, WHICH INCLUDE THE INTERACTION OF HUMAN, NATURE AND THE ATTITUDE OF LIFE. IN MY OPINION, A CULTURE WHICH GIVES BIRTH TO THE ARCHITECTURE IS HOW THE PEOPLE DEFINE THEIR LIVES. I WOULD LIKE TO SEEK FOR A BETTER LIFE AND HAVE THE DESIRE FOR BEAUTIFUL THINGS. BUILDING PEOPLE’S LIFE IS WHAT ARCHITECTURE MEANS TO ME.

REVEAL & CONCEAL SEATTLE CENTRAL LIBRARY
Designing a stimulating and abstract composition that inspired by the Seattle central library (OMA). The Seattle central library strongly shows the strength of the structure and the visual impact, so ‘Form follows function’ first came to my mind before I started to design this project. This concept became the core in the further design. To decide a proper material for my design was a difficult phase during the process. Firstly, I tried to use some transparent materials such as plastic films to be the facade of the main part, but the surface of plastic film did not appear a good quality of texture that I expected. The surface could not demonstrate most of the features like glass has. Therefore, I changed to another method to express the quality of glass by emphasising each main material in an individual way.

CUBE PROJECT TANGIBLE & INTANGIBLE
By understanding the project brief, ‘we are going to create space rather than define it’. I would like to create tensions by different depth of layers. This also gives the potential of the special quality that I would like to achieve in this project. In my design, I decided to set Tangible and Intangible as the contrast of my cube design. For further explanation of this concept, I was trying to break the mold of a cube, and I think less can give more. After some experiments, I thought the technic of folding paper would be the best method to meet the requirements of our project because folding paper is a very instinctive way to create space and can use material very efficiently. Developed from this concept, I used many implied designs to balance and integrate the missing corners which were folded inside like hollows, and also I keep the original trace of a complete square, these just like the projection of each objects.

PROCESS WORK The cube seems look like incomplete and physically lose some significant parts as a cube, but these projections followed the form of the structure and greatly offered an intriguing view to help and guide to reveal the black sphere inside. With these combination of tangible objects and intangible feelings, they conjured a very special quality both inside and outside and generate every details as a whole.

Followed the symbolic sign, seeking upstream to the summit instinctively. Time seems slack in the alley, and doesnt allow hustle invade in. The old wall padded with the green moss.
Leading by the changes of light and shade. Dramatic lights conjured a fascinating scene. As phototaxis. Lights in the shadow in the daytime. Time leaves some traces on the wall.
Weeds and old bricks. Contrast of light and shade shapes a clear edge. Connot get a through look of the twisted alley; above that, the scenery stands out vividly from the darkness. Sound of train passing through the arch bridge.

INTERVENTION PROJECT THE HOVER CABIN
Architecture is the experience about life, and how to influence people’s life is the task of the architects. From one dimension to three dimensions, from aesthetics to humanities, our architectural studies gradually inform the final project. As the final project of this semester, the practice assembles all aspects we have studied. The intervention project aims to bring life back into the ordinary experience of the Black Gate, Newcastle. Consist of many historical elements, the target site gives several ways to explore. I think the characteristics of the wall is very interesting. You can feel both safe and danger at the same time. When you stay inside, the wall is defensive, but when you experience and look outside the wall, the wall is dangerous and unpredictable. It is contradictory. Another attractive point of this site is that this area will not be covered with big shadow during the daytime. These points are all I would like to explore and test out in my intervention design.

INTERVENTION PROJECT DESIGN PROCESS

III
At this phase, I clearly understood what I am going to achieve. Therefore, the design practice was a process of testing and finding out the best way to assemble what I would like to capture into a single project. As simple as it is, the form of my intervention design is based on the experience and function I would like to provide to the user, and basically, the structure was developed from the two specific views, the church and the small garden. All I have done is to provide a new way to experience the wall and the context. When you walk down the long stairs, it force you to experience the space as a transition to change mood. Then you will get into the narrow space, and when you lift up your head, there is the view of the top of the church. It just feels like you are in the atmosphere of the church, even you are not. It makes you feel contradictory but amazing.

INTERIOR VIEW & EXTERIOR VIEW
PERSPECTIVE DRAWINGS
CONCEPTUAL DRAWINGS
Initially, I wanted to take every advantages on this site and put them into practice in my intervention. To make it more specific, I found and decided three main features to capture. The first one are the special views, the top of the Cathedral Church of St. Nicholas and a small garden situated on the wall, which will only happen at this site. The second one is the contradictory feeling of the wall. Finally, the good physical sunlight condition can contribute to create strong contrast between the exterior and interior of my intervention design. About the use of materials, I considered three aspects: 1. The materiality will not be the visual obstruction on the original site. 2. Easy to construct and also provide enough strength, because this is a temporary intervention project. 3. Comfort. The result are steel structure, light aluminum roof and weathering steel faรงade. The stairs and seating are covered with timber to separate the cold feeling from the steel structure. VIEW FROM INSIDE 11
