CTH CHANG TA-HSIN PORTFOLIO 2015-2019

Why Should I Apply to Postgraduate School? I received practical education in the architecture field at the University of Science and Technology, and the experience of BIM engineers and on-site management. Although the foundation of the university's education and workplace experience quickly merged. On the other hand, I felt that my creativity has not improved, like being limited to the framework. In summary, I like to apply for this course to improve my creative ability and combine with my own practical architectural ability to face future designs and projects.

40%20MIN A New Form of Social Housing Xitun District. Taichung Academic semester project, Graduation design, Solo Final honours critiquetop, Top 5% of the 100 participants Sep 2016- May 2017

Nowadays, people seem to be drawn closer by modern life, but they are actually being pulled farther away from each other. This creates urban indifference, and cities and people run like machines. With rapid economic development, the out-of-control cities have many problems, like the loss of housing equality and the lack of public open space. Can I propose a new urban system? In the future, families of 1-3 people will become mainstream. With the growth of living habits and sensibilities, they will evolve to need more connected living spaces. They will not need to own big houses, as renting flats and small spaces is enough. This new nomadic lifestyle has become a societal problem that must be faced. With our current demographic structure, the “inverted pyramid, how can we support a larger population in need than ever before? I propose a system, "40% 20min", to respond to the urban problems I have observed and to face my vision of the future.

20min life circle A 1km diameter walk life circle. Consider walking out of your home, in an environment that replicates life before countless cars have invaded the city, like in Paris. You can find almost everything you need on a daily basis within a few hundred meters. The neighborhood exchange becomes easy because o f i n c re a s e d w a l k i n g , a n d people become close. With this structure, we move away from busy, traffic-heavy streets, and encourage local connection. The living circle provides different get-together spaces, trying to reproduce the neighborhood spirit of traditional villages. There is no clear boundary in the living circle, and the cores can be overlapped. The core connects the circle and forms a network of living circles.

Mass and Environment

Design Goals Establish a 40% 20min system discussion and select a base to use as the design in response to the questions posed by my graduation design. The 40% 20min system can be implemented in different cities to generate their own communication and strengthen urban connection; the project site is a social housing site in Taichung City, scheduled to be built within five years. I will consider the local groups and environments around the site, and propose my vision and goals for the future. The ground floor is open to residents, and the residential floor has reduced private space. Meanwhile, the open public space is shared among different groups of residents.

CIRCULAR Public Works of Social Housing Dali District. Taichung Academic semester project, 4th design of the junior year Collaboration with Ken Hung May - Jun 2016

This project is based on Taichung City's public housing competition regulations. The Taiwanese national housing program is often synonymous with poverty and high crime rates, and this project seeks to solve these problems. It does so by proposing an open and non-classical social residence. The open ground square forms a common gathering activity in the neighborhood. The field of each floor, with the space of the traditional banyan tree in Taiwan as the concept, forms the communal space between the floors. The living units populated by residents of different ethnic groups are arranged side by side, the units turn and the façade’s design faces the monsoon and west sun of the site.

Open Community The ground floor is open to the surrounding residents

Function Surround Community public facilities are built around round squares, gathering people and becoming a park.

Traditional Central Corridor Poor lighting and ventilation.

Traditional Unilateral Corridor Lack of privacy and public space.

The breezeway is a public space in the center, like the common tree gathering space in Taiwan.

Rotate the Mass Resolve the lack of privacy in the unilateral corridor, resulting in front and rear balconies for gardening and working.

Mass Layout In response to the monsoon and the western sun, one-unit group faces southwest, to deny the heat of the sun and the chill of the wind.

Disrupted Unit Each unit group is different, and the average allocation unit is on each floor to promote group communication.

NEW BORN The Exhibition Center West District. Taichung Academic semester project, 3rd design of the junior year, Solo Mar - Apr 2016

This project is the exhibition center - learning from the masters. I chose to study Fumihiko Maki Architects. He values urban, cultural and human textures, treasures the images obtained in environmental analysis, and excels at expressing inclusive spirit through works. To the south of the base is a Toog tree with a 1000-year-old lifespan. The Japanese highland has created a special landscape for the second generation of new roots. The base is located at the junction of new and old blocks, with environmental context, inclusiveness and urban existing structure. Linking 3 meters deep across 1000 years, the new neighborhood and the suffocating old block are derived from two masses, intertwined with each other.

Concept: Use a ramp to connect 3 meters - 1000 years

Extension: The new block and the old block are derived from two bodies, which are intertwined and integrated.

Second generation root Native root suffocation

Mass A: Second generation root- New block

Mass B: Native root suffocation- Old block

The main concept of this design is based on the environment, attaches importance to environmental analysis and openness, expands the original function of the exhibition center, and becomes the gathering activity space of the new and old neighborhoods. The texture of culture and humanity is fully displayed in this design.

XIANG XUE The Elementary School and Kindergarten South District. Taichung Academic semester project, 2nd design of the junior year Collaboration with Ken Hung Nov - Dec 2015

The elementary school project is located in the Redevelopment Zone. The long stripshaped site is divided into three sections by sports, teaching, and ecology. The design concept is the cross-link and open campus. During class time, it is an elementary school, and after class it is the neighborhood park and community college, which is like a large community activity center. The layout of the teaching area uses corridors throughout the whole campus. One end of the corridor is static, and the other is dynamic. The indoor space is divided into 6 units for independent management and community use. In the facade, grille wall blocks glare and introduce soft lighting, the roof uses folded-plate structures for ventilation.

LEI ( 磊 ) Student Competition of the Earth God Temple Xitun District. Taichung Academic semester project, 1st design of the junior year, Solo Top 5% of the 100 participants Sep - Oct 2015

In Taiwan, Earth God Temples are closely related to the people. Early farmers worship the Earth God for a bumper harvest, and merchants worship the Earth God for the promise of increased wealth. Nowadays, people worship the Earth God for peace and health, and Earth God Temples have become a place for people to gather. The concept is based on the Chinese character "Lei". The layout, the façade, and the image are all conceived with "lei" in mind, to develop and form a thoughtful, spiritual space. Stability / Faith - creates a sense of stability. Pure / Prime connection in people and land. Overlapping / The Earth God initial form.

ENLIGFTENED The Buddhist Culture Park Dali District. Taichung Academic semester project, 4th design of the sophomore year, Solo Best project of the semester May - Jun 2015

This project is the final project in my second year of university, and it is the last handpainted layout. The topic is religious sanctuary, religious architecture that creates powerful space, leaving people in awe. I choose Buddhism, with Zen as a concept, "It goes straight into people's minds; One becomes a Buddha the moment he sees his own Buddha-nature.", The aim of this space is to directly point out what the essence of your heart is, guide you towards what your heart yearns for, and lead you down the path of enlightment.

Concept The main concept of this design is exploration, and how the process of exploration discovers its essence. The base is located at the intersection of two rivers. The site is 5 meters lower than the riverbanks on both sides. I designed two large sloping roofs to cover the site. The Buddha overlooks the whole park on the East side of the site. He is visible at all points in the park, no matter where you are standing. The interlaced search routes and functions are arranged underneath the roof of the structure. The middle of the site is placed in the shallow pool facing the entrance and the sides.

SHEN AO TANGO The project is a public art installation on campus, completed in 2017, and it won the 6th Public Art Award of the Ministry of Culture in 2018. The project’s original concept was the school dog "Xiao pi", combined with the history of local production of coal. I envisioned a new, extended design: "Tango music Classroom"; transforming the idle music classroom to create "Tango Story Nest"; creating "Times Mine Pit" with the historical background of the Shenao Mine Pit; creating "Shanhai Pin Pin" with the background of Keelung Harbour Life. I participated in the Tango Music Class and Shanhai Pin Pin. The 6th Public Art Award of the Ministry of Culture in 2018 Xinyi District. Keelung Summer internship project H2O design associates Mainly in charge of model-making, on-site making and slides making. Jul - Sep 2016

Shanhai Pin Pin The image of the ocean puzzles pieces together the life of Keelung. Using natural terrain as a prototype, the 3D puzzles are interlaced and staggered to simulate the gradual interlacing of the tides of the sea into the coastal terrain. The art class led the children to deeply understand Shen Ao, draw a picture of their own lives to create a base map. We then invited the master of the nail painting, Hu Huohua, to lead the residents from 5 to 80 years old to create a large nail painting, eight meters wide by recycled cans and nails. The public participated in the artist’s creation and combined the fun and joy of Keelung’s regional life.

Tango Story Nest The old music classroom in the school had been abandoned for a long time and lost its original function. This project transformed the classroom into an art installation by using abandoned desks and chairs in the classroom. It is hoped that the new functions of the classroom will be re-emphasized through the intervention of space arrangement and art installations. Create a new life in the space, let the classrooms themselves tell stories and bring children a fun, imaginative environment.

WORKING EXPERIENCE HOULI Construction Co. Ltd. BIM engineer/ Site supervisor, full time, May. 2018 - Present World Known Manufacturing Factory construction project/ Daya District. Taichung Starlight International Kindergarten construction project/ Xitun District. Taichung Belis Residential construction project/ Xitun District. Taichung Evolutivelabs Manufacturing Factory construction project/ Nantun District. Taichung

As a BIM engineer at Houli Construction Co., Ltd., I participated in 4 projects, built 3D models and construction drawings, and discussed them with colleagues and customers. After half a year, I also played the role of an on-site assistant. During this time, I used my architectural design skills and software expertise to complete the company's first residential case with BIM systems, and I implemented it from design to construction.

In the company, I am mainly responsible for discussing with the firm and drawing BIM construction drawings, using 3d software to preexclude design errors in the project, and providing 3D models for onsite construction inspection. Later I have the opportunity to discuss the model with the site director at various sites. In a short period of time, I was exposed to different stages of various projects, such as foundation excavation, steel lashing, grouting, decoration, etc. I participated in a total of four projects during my working experience, World Known Manufacturing Factory, Starlight International Kindergarten, Belis Residential, and Evolutivelabs Manufacturing Factory. Starlight International Kindergarten and Belis Residential I am responsible for troubleshooting, scheduling and discussing the designs with the architect. In World Known Manufacturing Factory is the overall planning and construction, inclouding old factory demolition and planning the new plant by cooperation with the architect, the case was completed in August 2019.
