elcome to the 6th issue of 30A Kids Club Magazine! It’s our 1-year anniversary issue. Before we dive into all of the fun and interesting things you’ll find inside, I’d like to thank you - truly - for reading. My goal when I started the magazine was, first and foremost, to help people. I want to help you know about the events offered along 30A and quick excursions you can take. I want you to know that healthy eating options aren’t impossibly hard or time consuming. I want to inform you about the fun sports programs and options for our local kids - both neurotypical and special needs. I want to help answer questions you have about where to go to eat or what resort to stay in. And for local parents, I want to create a sense of community so that you feel included. As we move forward into our second year of printing my team has lots of ideas on how to improve and engage even more with our readers. We are working hard to grow our online presence with unique content not found in the magazine and we’re posting lots of useful and inspiring information to our Pinterest, Instagram and Facebook accounts. The distribution of our magazine has grown with each issue. Thank you for requesting it. We already mail directly to
families in South Walton and Freeport and, with this issue, are now also mailing to Destin families! If there is information that you haven’t seen in the magazine that you wish was included, please send me an email or give me a call. It is wonderful to hear from readers and I appreciate the feedback. It helps us create a better product for you. Inside this issue you’ll find a packed events calendar, an inspiring resort wear photo spread and tips on how you can best play tourist this summer (tourists, you’re welcome to use this inside scoop too!). 1. Congratulations to Bay Elementary’s 3rd grade class! The kids ranked in the top 5.6%
in the state of Florida for English and Language Arts (on the 2017 Florida State Assessment test). Walton County School District ranked 6th and Okaloosa County School District ranked 2nd in the state of Florida for assessed student achievement.
2. Sacred Heart on the Emerald Coast is hosting breastfeeding support groups and education series with the help of the La Leche League. Classes begin on July 5 at 10am and will be held the first Wednesday of each month. Classes are free. Call (850) 259-1105 for information. 3. Dr. Patsy Vargo (left) and Hillary Glenn are seeing patients each Wednesday from 7:30am - 1:30pm. The new Point Washington Medical Clinic does not charge for services (but donations are appreciated) and does not require documentation for services. Walk-ins are welcome. W
ho else thinks that “Doc McStuffins: Toy Hospital” is just a big malpractice lawsuit waiting to happen? Stuffy is like the Meredith Grey of children’s television. Or what about Mickey Mouse’s Clubhouse? I mean, I wish a creepy disk would come out of thin air to help solve all of my problems. Don’t get me started on how those PJ Mask kids stay out so late, that’s just lazy parenting! I talked about a shift of focus happening when Amelie was born through those first few months. You’re focused on keeping the little human alive. “How you doing, Kevin?” “How do you think I’m doing, Stan? I’m trying to keep a HUMAN ALIVE!” It was touch and go there for me. Little did we know a whole new shift was about to happen when, for the first time, she laughed at something I did. Baby Momma had gotten her to laugh a couple times when I wasn’t there, but this was different having it happen in person. I think I was playing around with Melissa & Doug’s Smoulder dragon puppet asking her in a silly voice what she thought of the recent Brexit vote when she cackled loudly. I mean, I know the idea of the UK leaving the EU is pretty funny, but I didn’t know the joke would land so well. Once I realized it was the cute dragon puppet making her laugh - I couldn’t stop. I tried out new things to get her to laugh, but I realized she had been watching me try to make her laugh the entire time. Voices and faces I had been making all the way to this point were finally getting a response. A cute, hilarious response. Her whole perspective had changed. Suddenly, I wasn’t just the silly bearded, non-Baby Momma figure. I was Dad. She wanted to me to make her laugh and be silly. When I would walk to the kitchen, she would peak
her head up over the couch cushion to see what I was doing. When I came into a room, she would do this thing where her nose would crinkle and she would crumble into a ball laughing. I mean, guys, it was awesome. With her perspective changing, mine had to. Back when I would write stand up comedy, I always tried to think of the perspective of the audience. Whether they were happy, sad, or just needed a little boost - my goal was to entertain. With Amelie, I needed to start seeing the world through her eyes. Books, toys, cartoons, balloons, random pieces of lint, dog toys, sandpipers on the beach, water bottles - this is what got her attention. All of these are great, but c’mon, cartoons. While I enjoy the trivial fact that the “Hot Dog Dance” is performed by They Might Be Giants, one of my favorite bands, the show is pretty awful. Donald is barely understandable, Mickey seems like he sweeps a lot of emotions under the rug, and Goofy perpetuates a whole host of stereotypes. But Amelie doesn’t care about my weird opinions. She just loves the sounds, colors, and Mickey. So I watch it with her. And I dance with her. And I do my best Goofy impression. We were at the airport recently and Amelie started to get really fussy. Dad instinct kicked in. I put her on my shoulders and she freaking loved it. She laughed, pointed at strangers, and yelled “Da da da da” up and down D Terminal. It was the most fun I’ve had at the airport, becausev I saw the normal host of shy, busy travelers smiling back, waving, and laughing. Not a bad perspective, if you ask me. Kevin will be sharing tales of new fatherhood in each issue. He’ll also be adding his humor to 30akidsclub.com every other week. When not parenting, Kevin runs an event and marketing agency, Poor Truman Creative.

Don't forget to stock all the essentials like toothpaste, toilet paper, sunscreen, soap and towels.
Provide a place for guests to unpack, like a bench or chair, in the bedroom.
A night stand with a light, clock and a small flower or glass for water is a nice touch, too.

orking from home is not easy. It can be difficult to keep items organized and together while maintaining the look of your home. Interior Designer bess pooler shares her top tips for designing a successful home office. 1. A bar height work station (or a standing desk)
helps keep curious little hands out of your good pen stash.
2. Set up a work area where your little ones can
“work” while you get a few things done. Crayons, sticky notes and a calculator are great supplies for their area.
3. Bulletin boards are an ideal home for school calendars and permission slips. It's easy to make one tailored to your home office space with supplies from your local craft store. 4. Different colored binders make it easy to keep up with each child’s health records, report cards and other important information. 5. Fun acrylic containers and bins are easy to pick up at different retailers. These corral all of that clutter that turns into pesky stacks on every surface. 6. Magnetic file folders and wall files are a great
way to avoid that dreaded stack of mail that always piles up on the coffee table or in the kitchen.

lauren cottrell staggs was named Rookie of the Year her very first year in real estate. In the eight years since, she's led Scenic Sotheby's International Realty in closed transactions and garnered a reputation for impeccable customer service. Plus, she's a mom to one-year-old Milly, and has another baby girl on the way. Here, she talks about the advice, support and drive it takes to suceed at home and work.

hen I spoke with Lauren, she was effortlessly charming and gracious. She, and her entire household, were also battling the flu, making her charm and grace more of a superhuman power. It became very clear, Lauren is a woman who gets things done and does them with heart. No wonder then, that she juggles two 24/7 careers: real estate and motherhood. What drew you to real estate?
I watched this area grow throughout my life, experiencing all that [it] has to offer, from the beaches to the bays and all the things in between. After graduating from the University of Alabama, I moved back to the Emerald Coast and it seemed like a natural fit for my personality and my passion for this beautiful area to pursue a career in real estate sales. What’s at the heart of your passion for being a Realtor?
I have formed hundreds of meaningful relationships in my relatively short time in this business. I truly enjoy nurturing those relationships and staying in touch with people long after any transaction is complete. As a mom, what challenges do you face in creating a work/life balance?
Juggling a real estate schedule with mommy duties. Being in real estate, I am on call all day, every day. You never know when the phone will ring, but you have to be ready at all times. How do you make that work?
It is a work in progress, but luckily my husband works with me and has done a great job picking up any slack so that I can also focus on being a mom. My home support system is key! I would not be able to do it without help. Has your career taught you anything that you apply to motherhood?
Consistency in performance, whether at work or at home, is truly a pillar to success. Vice versa, has motherhood taught you anything that you apply to your career?
Patience and more patience!
What was the best parenting advice you ever received?
Enjoy this time with your children as much as possible because time flies, the babies grow up and you will never get this time back. I truly try and take this to heart each day because it’s so easy to get caught up in the daily grind. What advice would you give other working moms?
Every mother has to evaluate her own life and decide what works best for her. Be ready to make adjustments and be flexible, but overall, try to relax and enjoy the journey while embracing your number one job: being a mom! Enjoy it and don’t forget to take a little time for yourself.

Greek Pasta Salad Ingredients:
4 cups whole wheat rotini (or favorite noodles) 1/2 cucumber, diced 1.5 cups cherry tomatoes, cut in half 1/2 cup olives 1 small red onion 1/4 cup green onions 1/2 cup crumbled feta 3 tbsp Greek seasoning 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil How-To:
1. Cook noodles according
to package, drain
2. Add cucumber, cherry
tomatoes, and onion to pasta. 3. Mix olive oil and Greek seasoning. Add to pasta and veggies. 4. Add crumbled feta, green onions, olives and mix. Serve. Serves 8-10

1. Mix honey with squeezed limes. 2. Pour over fruit and serve. Serves 8-10

2 cans black beans, rinsed 1 can corn, rinsed 1/2 red onion 1/4 cup green onions 1 cup red bell pepper 1 1/2 cherry tomatoes, cut in half 2 limes

They can choose their fruits and veggies for the smoothie and help by peeling bananas, cutting fruit (with supervision), and adding their selections into the blender (while it’s unplugged). Smoothie buffets can also be set up so everyone can make their own. Protein powder, greek yogurt and nuts can also be added to smoothies for a little extra nutrition. Making smoothies is a fun, creative process. Now go play with your food.

Basic Vanilla Yogurt Popsicle
Peanut Butter & Banana Popsicles
2 cups vanilla yogurt or Greek vanilla yogurt
3 bananas
6-8 popsicle molds
¾ cup peanut butter
Pour yogurt evenly into all of the popsicle molds and top each with a popsicle stick. Freeze at least 6 hours or overnight. When you are ready to eat your frozen treats, run the molds under water for a few seconds to loosen the popsicles.
2 tbsp. honey
Strawberry Cheesecake Popsicles
1 lb fresh strawberries, rinsed, hulled, and roughly chopped 1 packet cheesecake pudding mix 1 cup graham cracker crumbs Stir pudding mix and chopped strawberries into the yogurt. Pour mixture into popsicle molds, then sprinkle graham cracker crumbs evenly over each popsicle before inserting sticks and freezing.
Blueberry Lemon Popsicles 2 cups fresh blueberries, rinsed and pulsed in a food processor Zest of one lemon
Puree bananas, peanut butter, and honey in a food processor until smooth. Stir banana mixture into yogurt, then spoon mixture into popsicle molds and freeze.
Poprocks POPsicles 6 packets of strawberry Poprocks Sprinkle a tablespoon of Poprocks into the bottom of each popsicle mold then top with ¼ cup vanilla yogurt. Repeat layers, then top with one more tablespoon of Poprocks, insert popsicle stick, then freeze.
Watermelon Lemonade Popsicles 3 cups cubed watermelon ¼ cup granulated sugar ¼ lemon juice Puree watermelon, sugar, lemon juice and yogurt in a food processor or blender until smooth. Pour into popsicle molds, insert popsicle sticks and freeze.
Stir pulsed blueberries and lemon zest into yogurt. Pour mixture into popsicle molds, insert popsicle sticks and freeze.

Materials: • Canvas board or white card stock • Painter’s tape • Glue • Scissors • Red, white and blue materials (Try using glitter, tissue paper, paint, star confetti, construction paper or painted newspaper.)
Step-by-step instructions: 1: Glue a blue rectangle on the top left corner of the canvas and tape off the
stripes with painter’s tape. 2: Paint the exposed space between the painters tape red. Let dry. 3: Pull off the painter’s tape to reveal white stripes. 4: Add stars and you are done!

he toe tapping tunes from Huck & Lilly seem to be everywhere this summer. If you haven’t heard “I Sat on a Porcupine” your life really isn’t complete. It’s a song that might seem silly at first (who sits on a porcupine?), and then you find yourself dancing with abandon like Snoopy in a Charlie Brown cartoon. Winning over parents with their music is a goal of the Ken Johnson and Andi Zack-Johnson - the talented songwriters and musicians who created Huck & Lilly. The band performs weekly in Seaside and has ongoing shows at The Hub 30A. Prior to moving to South Walton they worked and wrote in Nashville for 10 years. Ken and Andi’s first hit together was in 2010, “Beer on the Table,” with Josh Thompson. He also wrote (and got roped into singing it with him on his TV show) “Every Time I Fall in Love,” for Harry Connick, Jr. The two are cast members on the Ryan Seacrest produced show, “I Love Killie Pickler” on CMT and have bios that are long and incredibly impressive (feel free to read their full bios on huckandlilly.com). They are true artists who prove that if you love what you do and you fully commit yourself to it - the sky is the limit. And to prove this point - breaking news! questions in life, like how “The Fiddler Crab” came to be: “We were down in Seaside writing country music,” Andi said. “We were hanging out on the beach when I saw a fiddler crab and I thought it was an albino tarantula! (I’m from Canada). Ken said it was a fiddler crab so I asked him why it was called a fiddler crab and he said, ‘I don’t know. He don’t play a fiddle.’ And then the song practically wrote itself.” “Kids are smart and they deserve crafty lyrics,” Ken said. “We wanted the production to be high so we teamed up with Skidd Mills, who is a multi-Grammy and Dove award winner. He’s a world class musician on every instrument. He, Andi and I play all of the instruments on ‘There’s a Tree Growing in my Room’. He’s been an exceptional partner on it.” But the album was met with a bit of surprise. “The first thing I do is turn in what I write to my publisher,” Ken explained. “When I sent him ‘Fiddler Crab’ he said, ‘What are you doing at the beach and what do I do with this?’” “We wrote it for ourselves and our nieces and nephews,” Andi said. “Then we had other ideas and the songs kept coming.” Ken said one of his favorite stories about “I Sat on a Porcupine” involves a friend of his in Birmingham, Ala.

We describe our music as music for kids and the grownups that love them.” Huck & Lilly will be debuting new songs this summer and are launching in-house concerts and performances. That’s right! Your child’s next birthday party could feature a private concert with Huck & Lilly. How fun is that? The duo have also launched Hit Songwriter House Concerts. These are shows that are either performed at The Backyard of Love in Grayton Beach, or in private homes here or around the Southeast. Ken and Andi have teamed up with Grayton Beach Catering to provide dinner while major songwriters (like “Big Al” Anderson, Sarah Buxton and Kyle Johnson) provide the music. Tips for Building
the best
sandcastle 1
Select the spot for your castle. Clear away any debris and flatten out a base for the castle to be built upon.

Make sure you have a few tools on hand. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll need a bucket and shovel. Spatulas and short sticks are great for creating smooth walls and ledges.

Either dig out and stack sand for the base of the castle, or create turrets and walls using the bucket.

Fill your bucket halfway with water and then add dry sand. It will mix more easily this way.

Quickly flip the bucket and place in the desired spot. Tap the sides of the bucket gently with a small shovel or the spatula. Gently lift the bucket to reveal the turret or walls.

Once the castle is built, it is time to go in and spend time on the details.

A small piece of driftwood or the sharp edge of a seashell are perfect for drawing the windows and doors of the castle.

Decorate the castle with shells and other found objects.

Admire your creation.
Have fun knocking down your sandcastle before you leave the beach. While beautiful, it might prevent an endangered sea turtle from nesting on our beaches. Help a sea turtle out by keeping the beach flat and free of things that might scare her. -- SV

When I Grow Up... I Wanna be an architect!
Do you know what an architect does? Architects figure out what buildings will look like. That could be a house by the beach, a skyscraper in a city… you get the idea. We spoke with Architect anthony vallée, with McWhorter Vallee Reese Design. Photo: Shelly Swanger Photography Why did you become an architect? Both of my parents
studied architecture in Cuba and when they came to the United States they continued to work in interior design and related fields in Miami, Fl. I remember drawing pictures underneath my dad’s desk when I was little and going to client’s houses with my mother. I was fascinated with the blueprints that I’d see and began to realize that putting a building together is not simply an engineering feat there is artistry and creativity that you can’t replicate in any other field.
What should I do if I want to become an architect? Play
with LEGOs. Seriously! We have several sets in our office. I’d also pay attention to the buildings around you. Here on 30A we are surrounded by unique and interesting architecture. Take a walk and see how the houses differ from each other. What do you like? Why? Go home and draw a picture of something you didn’t like and then change it. And carry a little sketchbook with you.

Can I have a house shaped like a snow cone? I’ve never been
asked that before! Absolutely and that sounds like a lot of fun. People get paid a lot of money to do wild and interesting things - just like at Walt Disney World. They get paid to design all kinds of buildings like the Be My Guest restaurant or Cinderella’s Castle or even the classic dinosaur-shaped buildings on Route 66. The only thing you’d have to make sure of, is that if you want a snow cone as a house, you have to find a neighborhood where that would be appropriate and would allow that, and that’s part of what an architect does too. That’s why it’s helpful to have an architect on board before you even buy land.
Why should people hire an architect? Some buildings
l I love making models of homes for clients. Sketches and floor plans are great, but nothing lets someone “see” their future home like a model.
l A client needed an addition to a home in Blue Mountain Beach, but couldn’t ruin the views from a second floor porch and wanted lots of natural light.
and neighborhoods require an architect, but the better reason is because you like what they do and you like the way the buildings they design make you feel. Architects create beauty in this world, and that should be supported. -SV

Head Coach Bob McDonald established the team to challenge and cultivate young players here in South Walton and prepare them for middle school softball. You see, fast pitch softball is similar to baseball with one major exception; it uses a completely different pitching motion. Fast Pitch softball pitchers use a windmill windup as compared to a baseball pitcher that uses a more traditional overhand delivery. Little League Recreational Softball does not allow girls to pitch until they are over the age of 10. This meant that Coach Bob’s daughter and many other girls in our area would not be exposed to “live” pitching until they enter middle school, which would delay their development. “My intent was to level the playing field for our South Walton girls and give them opportunities that can only come from travel softball,” he shared. The South Walton Hawks 10U Softball team is all about building a foundation for the future. They’ve started with a young group and are providing them a valuable fast pitch softball experience. The team began practicing in late winter and will play tournaments into early summer and is now on a brief break until their fall season begins. Tryouts will be held in August and Coach Bob encourages any area girls born in 2006 or later to try out for Fall Ball.
“I run my tryouts more like a clinic,” he explained. The girls will go through drills, but they will also learn a lot and have a ton of fun. Parents should note, playing Fall Ball is a great way to prepare new players for the Spring season. As South Walton’s softball and baseball programs continue to grow and attract more young players, the Hawks 10U Softball’s Assistant Coach Tracy Wilmes, has himself created even more training opportunities for area kids. This past Spring he opened a new 2,500-square-foot facility on the south end of Highway 83, near the intersection of Highway 98. Coach Tracy is knowledgeable in the fundamental skills of softball and baseball. His contribution and the use of his facility is a huge asset to the Hawks Softball team. The focus of the Hawks is to build athletes, not just softball players. South Walton Athletics and Training Center boasts indoor netting, which means open field space to train for baseball, softball, football, soccer, and volleyball. They provide team, individual, and private training as well as a variety of clinics throughout the year to help kids hone skills in their specific sport. This summer, camps have been offered for baseball, softball, and volleyball and they also host 90 minute birthday parties that are athletically inspired and designed to make kids sweat! Mythical Milestones By Ashley Smith
remember when my son started Kindergarten, his Elmer Fudd speech impediment in tow. His Rs were rounded like Ws, and suffice it to say, I was weally, weally concerned. The speech impediment wasn’t my only worry, however. Every morning was like a parenting spoof of Groundhog Day, the same thing over and over: “Where are your shoes? You wore them, you took them off, where are they?” Forget knowing how to tie shoes, I was thrilled if he had any on.
Speech disorders vary, but the two most common are rooted in articulation and phonological awareness. The former relates to the inability to produce a specific sound (the R/W exchange, for example). A phonological disorder has to do with where the letter sound is formed within the mouth. A general rule of thumb according to the American Speech Language Hearing Association is that by age three, a child should produce single letter sounds, and by eight, produce letter blends.
Yet, I had heard stories of children walking into Kindergarten, their lisps and lazy tongues forgotten in the yesteryear of preschool, their shoestrings self-tied, and halos balanced carefully above their tangle-free hair.

What made these kids so advanced? What did their parents do to ensure they met or surpassed the milestone markers?
Tying shoes requires a great deal of practice, as well as fine motor skills. Showing your child how to make those bunny ears a couple of times may not be enough. They need repetition. Search YouTube for “new ways to teach kids to tie shoes” and you’ll find a dozen videos to get your child one step closer to being velcro-free.
After all, I’d read to my child since the day I found out I was expecting. Counted, sang, taught him the alphabet— each of these in four different languages. I breastfed, pureed homemade organic baby food, used golden thread spun by vegan woodland fairies to knit his clothes. At this point, you may have guessed he was my only child. As such, I didn’t have a comparison for his development, and even if I had, any parent can tell you comparing two children, related or not, is useless. As for measuring your child against those developmental charts in the lobby of the pediatrician’s office, take it from parenting blogger Madeline Holler, “[M]ilestone charts are not there to compete against (unless your kid is winning).” Then, a few months later, I met some of Atticus’ peers on playdates, and they too had lisps and velcro sneakers (oh, sweet, merciful universe)! Turns out those stories I’d heard about classrooms full of kindergartners who were reading novels by age three were, for the most part, a bunch of myths. The fact is, children develop at the rate that is realistic for them, and measuring them against charts (or other children) is not an indicator of future success. Here is a more realistic look at post-infant milestones to set the record straight:

Nighttime dryness is not something children can achieve through will power. It’s about their bodies’ ability to recognize signals that they have to go to the bathroom. Bedwetting affects boys more often than girls. Most children outgrow bedwetting by age seven, but for some it can last to age 10. Arming yourself with knowledge, a mattress protector, and a sense of humor is the best way to approach bedwetting. Discipline should never be a factor in treating bedwetting; simply put, kids can’t control it.

Because children begin to recognize phonemes at age four, there is a perpetual misconception that this is the age at which they should be reading. The fact that a child can recognize words, as opposed to shapes, scribbles, or numbers, does not mean he/she has the ability to produce sounds or connect meaning. Fluency is built between the age of six to seven. Reading to your child to model sounds and inflection is a great way to increase fluency.
