PICK IT UP SHAKE IT

FEATURE Combining uncovering with shaking makes it easy and intuitive to use. Above all, without unnecessary movements, we won’t stain the bottle or the surroundings because of keeping touching the surface repeatedly.

18

BACKGROUND

HTA

Kitchen is a place filled with creation and passion. Kitchenware is the second soul of the kitchen and the chef. Sometimes the atmosphere becomes annoying because of messy surroundings, stained floor, oily kithenware. The fluency of using kitchenware and the using process impacts on the quality of cooking experience.

We adopted HTA (Hierarchical Task Analysis) to record and analyze the whole cooking process and each steps of it, trying to figure out the core of these problems. Furthermore, I thought that the key point of cleaning problems and the messy, greasy surrounding are due to the repeated hand movements of picking up, putting down, throwing, etc., which pass the water, stain and greasy messes to other kitchenware, making everything in the kitchen greasy and requiring wearisome cleaning every after cooking.

INTERVIEW & QUESTIONNAIRE

To begin the project, I started from a bigger picture, the kitchen, observing the whole cooking process so as to get the insight and the core of this issue. Also, I could get more closer to the cooks’ thoughts about what really matters or bothers. Thus, I could make sure that I found the true problems and solved them in a proper way. I found that the cleaning and storage problems are the basic but the most annoying ones. As a result, I set my desgin goal to solve them.

19 TAKE N BACKGROUND & RESEARCH

PRODUCT RESEARCH

I chose seasoning products as my design project, because of the problems and insight from the former research. The seasoning products are one of the source. Therefore, I made a research of the current products. I wondered why the season ing products are always greasy. Eventually, I found the opening and uncovering movements and the using procedure as breakthrough points.

QUESTIONNAIRE Q A

What is most troublesome in the kitchen? Preparing the materials and cleaning up the kitchenware take most of the time. Cooking itself doesn’t bother at all.

Q A

What bothers you in the period of cooking? It’s a problem to open seasoning containers when your hands are wet or greasy. It happens when you are going to open the cabinet. It really bothers to clean up the greasy things.

Q A

What is the problem in cleaning up the kitchenware? The corners of countertops are is liable to mildew. The stoves and the walls in the rear are hard to reach for cleaning up.

Q A

How do you deal with the remains in preparing the materals? I often throw them into the sink first and throw them away after cooking.

Q A

Is there any inconvenience when using the stoves? It’s fine. Just the gaps get stains easily and are not easy to be cleaned.

Q A

Is there any inconvenience when doing the dishes? Lazy I think.

Q A

What is the part you hate most when cooking? It’s hot and humid. I get sweaty all the time.

WAY TO UNCOVER & USE IT / PROBLEMS ANALYSIS Take the lid off & Scoop

Flick & Scoop

The ingredients might get wet. Can’t finish by one-hand (lid & spoon).

Flick & Pour

Flick & Squeeze

The unfixed lid is Usually sticky. annoying while using the spoon or pouring.

Press & Pour

Twist or Unscrew

Pouring while pressing the top isn’t so handy. A small residue is usually retained by the surface. The lid is hard to unscrew for it’s shallow.

20

21 TAKE N IDEATION & PROTOTYPING

IDEATION

I attributed the greasy seasoning bottle problems to two reasons. First of all, the ingredient inside may easily be retained on the bottle. Second, in the using precedure, the more we touch the bottle, the greasier the bottle may become. Therefore, in order to remove bad impression, I developed a design of a pepper shaker by which the user can use it by one hand with simple movements.

PROTOTYPE

To test the ideation, first of all, I used water pipes to make the first prototype. After confirming the practicability of the idea, I turned to try different materials, plastic & aluminum, by which improved the smoothness of the shaking movement, the fluency of the spiral spring bounce, and the tightness of the gap between the internal and the external pipes.

There are two compartments which could be detached depending on different circum stances. The main bag is designed for carrying related small personal belongings, such as keys, wallets, cellphones and etc. To guard against thief, the bag is equipped with a buckle with built-in combination lock in order to be locked on a immov able object, such as a basketball post. On the other hand, the detach able bag is designed to solve the bothers of carrying sneak ers and wet jerseys. Also, to lock the bag up, the detached bag becomes a covering coated around the main bag. After being wrapped by the strap, the bag is secure. Furthermore, it is made up of mesh, which could be used as a laundry bag while carrying the wet jerseys. Each parts of the bag is perfect for a basketball player, making the sports process much more enjoyable.

26

I love basketball. I kept thinking about what it would be like that I design thing based on my passion and interest. This is one of them. A bag design for a basketball player, BAGLOCK.

2 7 BAGLOCK DESIGN PROCESS

PROBLEMS

After interviewing several basketball players, I found out the basic requirements. Convenience is the most important element. It’ll be awesome that something could drive out other bothers like arrangement of stuff, worry about the security of personal belongings while playing on the court, and carry of wet dirty jerseys and shoes.

IDEATION

Considering three common situation, I managed to develop ideas fit the needs of convenient carry, laundry and security. As for the convenient carry and laundry, I took convenience of different bags into account. I came up with the idea of detached bags to fit different scale of staff, such as sneak ers and money. Meanwhile, the compartments could remain the cleanness of personal belong ings while carrying dirty jerseys. Regarding security, I thought that by the court it’s hard to reach the level of absolute secure. Since thieves wouldn’t like to spend too much time and catch other’s eye, I thought that a simple lock which could prevent people from picking up or opening the bag easily is enough.

PROTOTYPE

I learned to make a paper pattern on my own in order to feel the size fit a man’s body. Plus, I used a ready-made buckle with built-in combination lock to make a functional prototype. In this project, after testing, I made the second version of prototype. I got feedback to modify the opening width and the size of the detachable bag so as to make it more handy and improve its burglarproof function.

ABSTRACT

COLLABORATION CLIENT

SOLAR DRAGONFLY is a workshop project in Beijing, aimed to promote the collaboration between design majers from colleges of China and Taiwan. Based on make the most of thin-film solar power technology, we developed a concept of the application through the solar-power parasols and energy sharing stations located at public spaces, tourist attractions or transport hubs. People can use the parasols to block the sun while traveling or commuting through the streets, and get some reward from the stations after returning the parasols. Meanwhile the station can accumulate a huge mass of solar-power from the returned parasols. Within the mutual benefits, we may attract more people back up the application of green energy.

We were honored to collaborate with Hanergy Holding Group Ltd. which is a multinational clean energy company as well as the world’s leading thin-film solar power company, committed to change the world by thin-film solar. They sent their senior engineers to introduce the current technology of thin-film solar, helping us realize the demands of their company. In general, the goal is to make application of green energy more popular.

With the limit of the low charging ability, if we want to extend the technology to normal ife. It should be a huge amout of people working on it. As a result, we seek the potential of public works. How to make people do one thing which seems time-wasting ? We got an idea to accumulate these scattered energy using as supporting infrastructure. On the other hand, if we can find out things people always do in the sunshine, walking for examle. Then we just put a solar power thin-film on them. Once people can get reward while doing these kind of must-do but none-productivity actibities, the incentive is fair enough.

IDEATION

To accumulate solar power enough to a valuable mass, we designed parasols for the walkers and travelers, and solar power trading and sharing system as the parasol borrowing station located at public spaces, tourist attractions or transport hubs. People can borrow the parasols to block the sun while traveling or commuting through the streets, and get some reward from the stations after returning the parasols. Meanwhile, the stations can accumulate enough mass of solar-power from the returned parasols. The power collected can be used to support the electricity needs of the stations, provide the billboard working independently and stimulate other business opportunities, and ect.

VISION

We hope to promote the environment protection and the green energy- solar power. To make people aware of this issue, we make a solar power sharing system. We tried to turn the way people block the sunshine into the way we accept it. And that is only one of the examples to catch people’s eyes. Creating a mutual benefits is the long-term plan.

39 TAKE CARE BACKGROUND

BACKGROUND

IDEATION

In the Chinese, taking care of parents is the basic filial duty for the sons and daughters. Plus, our country has entered the aged society. It is urgent to raise the consciousness of elder care.

We design a tray which carrys several dietary supplement bottles or tablets with are the most common in the market. The equippment on it can remind and guide the elders to take dietary supplements on time. Moreover, the most important one, we put the sound record device within so that the parents can hear the voice of care from their children.

As for me, since my grandmother lives alone, my parent and I go visit her once in a while. Though she can totally take care of herself, every time we visit her, I can feel the loneliness of her and the eagerness to chat with us more. I feel deeply sorry, and maybe something I can do for her.

RESEARCH

INSIGHT

After research, we learned that there is a huge market for dietary supplement, especially more than half of which is aimed for the elderly. Also, we did some interview with some elders, some of whom may live alone while their children are busy on work in other cities. More and more people turn to send some dietary supplements back to their parents to do their filial duty. Furthermore, people keep a positive attitude to take dietary supplements regularly for health.

Sending a box of dietary supplement can provide the physical health care. Howev er, we found that few products is exactly designed for mental support. Therefore, we try to connect the dietary supplements with emotion. Attempt to touch the elders heart, make them feel deeper care than merely a box of supplement. Also, let the sons and daughters be at ease.

BASIC PROBLEMS

1. Weak memory of the elderly 2. The sons and daughters’ worry 3. The elderly’s loneliness

COLLABORATION CLIENT

This is a project collaborating with C.D.H. CO., LTD (CHING-DAH HARNG), which is a company working on manufacturing and selling professional medical equipments for 40 years, especially pharmacy dispensing systems and Chinese medicine decoction machines. We were honored to design and refine the current medine dispensing machine. Moreover, we got a lot of instant feedback and advice during the process of the project so as to elevate to a higher level of design.

45 WARRIOR BACKGROUND

HTA

PROBLEMS

After interviewing with the mechanical engineer, the pharmacists and the nurses, we took notes of their steps of packaging medicine, and also some troubles and problems they have ever encountered before. We used HTA (Hierarchical Task Analysis) to identify the core of the problem and then optimize these procedures. Through the analysis process, not only could we point out the key problems, but we could see the whole picture, preventing taking one problem into consideration while neglecting others.

1. The sophisticated holder of wrapping paper roll makes it a complicated process to load with a new wrapping paper roll. 2. The pharmacist always puts the medicine into each single cell with hands. It’s much faster, but unsanitary. 3. The narrow, crowded, sophisticated interior space makes the cleaning work too inconve nient to be executed everyday. 4. The pharmacist often puts the medicine into the wrong cells unconsciously. 5. The panel is over simplified and lacks of intuitive instructions.

48

IDEATION

To reduce the possibility of making operating mistakes, we devoted to develop the ideation of intuitive instruction and simplified procedure. Moreover, for the sake of sanitation, we tried to figure out a method letting the users complete their job without touching the medicine by hands.

FEATURE

OUTLOOKS Inspired by sport cars formed by plates instead of a complete mass, which make it look lighter, faster, and high quality. We followed the semantics. Most of the body is open-plan, making the interior mechanism much easier to maintain. Plus, we put more elements of sport car into WARRIOR, such as the starting lever, the instrument panel and exhaust pipe. We thought that an interesting using experience can make the user focus on the process. DRAWER The holder of wrapping paper roll is placed horizontally in the drawer. A simple opening makes loading new paper roll and th e maintenance much easier. PANEL Several buttons and cycles with clear hierarchical organization and LED shining clues make it much easier to read the commonly confused instructions. Moreover, the needle on it can remind the number of package preventing user from making mistakes.

How long haven' t got a surprise? Receiving presents is delightful . Opening them is much more exciting. We decided to take a simple but interesting approach to send the surprise of opening a gift to our customers.

5 5 CHO!CE CONCEPT

BR A ND I N G C H O ! C E CHOICE stands for the expectation of choosing a gift . The dotted line is a hint to tear off, which stands for opening the gift . The exclamation mark stands for the surprise of opening the gift . We also named it ’‘ 巧撕’‘, pronounced like choice and ’‘巧思’‘ in Mandarin. ’‘撕’’ means tearing off, and ’‘巧思’‘ means ingenuity, representing that with clever ideas, everything can become surprising.

56

PRODUC T G LAS S WATER BOT TLE

A water bottle is a useful product .The unique transparent sticker and wrapping paper makes it intersting. We made 100 different stickers. Each of the pattern on different stickers is one-of-a-kind. Also, interesting interaction occurs between the pattern and the water, such as the surfer surfing the water in the bottle. The dotted line on the wrapping paper cues the customer to tear it off. Hopefully, through the delightful pattern and the simple movement of tearing, we can bring the expectation and suprise to the customers.

57 CHO!CE FEATURE

SELLING STR ATEGY CHRISTMAS Since college students often pick presents to exchange during Christmas, we had small stand at university camps near Christmas.

PRODUCT The usefulness of the water bottle and the interest of tearing off the wrapping paper were the core of the selling.

I N TERN ET We promoted our brand concept and the products on the website. Quickly attracting attention, we sold the water bottles in advance on the website. Thanks for it , we could estimate the quantity of selling and sold out on the first day of the campus stand.
