president’s report The winter edition of Ct Connect is yet again another tribute to the hard work of our Team, and the continued engagement of you, our members. This winter edition celebrates some of our autumn based achievements, and outlines our plans for the next few months ahead. As we launch this issue many of our members have renewed their membership for the year (and years) ahead, thank you for your renewal, it shows your support to our organisation, our direction and the value we add to our community. I would encourage those who haven’t yet renewed to do so prior to the 30th June to continue to maintain all your benefits of membership. The autumn weather bought about some challenges for our Greens Team, particularly following on from our driest summer on record. I thank the Greens Team for their continued commitment to presenting our golf course in such fine form, often in difficult circumstances well beyond their control. Lisa and the team are looking forward to the Manning Valley Wedding Showcase, which will afford us the opportunity to showcase our award winning venue. Our functions department continues to grow thanks to our commitment to providing quality food experiences coupled with our service commitment. Our corporate and social function attendees continue to congratulate us on our complete Club Taree function experience which is attributed to a mix of our people, our product and our culture. I am once again looking forward to le Tour de Taree, the signature event of the Club Taree Community Team. It is an exciting event in our annual calendar, and the commitment from our entire team should be congratulated. Our team works so hard to make this event a huge success for Ronald McDonald

House Northern NSW (RMH NNSW), and I would ask that you consider supporting the event if you can. Last year our team rode 3519km in just 157 hours, I know that they will challenge themselves to ride just as hard in 2017 to raise funds for RMH NNSW. The relationships that our team have nurtured with the team at RMH NNSW since the inception of this initiative would rival in quality and authenticity any community organisation/club relationship across New South Wales. Recognition of achievements is often overstated, however I genuinely wish to thank the Club Taree Community Team for their hard work and dedication to the community over the last 2 years, and I congratulate them on their recent 2nd birthday. The Club Taree Board will continue to appreciate their involvement and will continue to offer our support where possible. We enjoy building relationships in our community. In April we were delighted to announce a three year partnership with the Taree and District Netball Association to the value of $24,000. This commitment from Club Taree will provide stability, encouragement and support for the Association which represents some 750 members. In May we also signed another three year commitment, this time with the Taree Touch Association, cementing not only naming rights for Club Taree Touch, but more importantly offering support to the 1000 plus participants of this much loved summer sport. The three year commitment of $15,000 is an investment in junior and senior sport within the Manning Valley.

In May we were also able to announce the 2017 Stacks Finance Legends ProAm to be held on Friday 1st December. We are very much looking forward to working with Stacks Finance in presenting this event, which is a wonderful addition to our 2017 golfing calendar. Behind the scenes we have an energetic committee working on making this event a huge success. The Board and Executive Leadership Team will once again meet in August to align and plan for our exciting future. Working together is important in providing our team, membership and community stability, growth and continues to cement our strong position across all areas. I’m sure you will enjoy reading on through this edition of CT Connect as I have. Yet again it highlights Club Taree’s continued focus on providing our community with a strong community asset through the delivery of authentic community support, fantastic and enjoyable experiences, award winning facilities, benchmark service commitments and engaging members promotions and rewards. We continue to look for new ways to engage our members, and our new members only promotion highlighted in this edition will cause some excitement across the Club for the next seven months. Thank you for your continued membership and patronage, we always look forward to welcoming you. Kind Regards Geoff Watman President 2

CEO’s report Welcome to the winter edition of CT Connect. It is our great pleasure again to highlight and present some of the exciting and diverse activities, events and seasonal food on offer again at Club Taree. Finance and the Future We have had a successful 2016 financial year, posting a profit of $502,325 as well as retiring $1M in major lending bank debt. We have strong financial capacity reflected in our continued reinvest into critical infrastructure, services and technology in order to ensure that we have taken all reasonable steps to provide an environment of safety to our Members and Visitors to our Club. Our strategic 3

planning remains strong and we are committed to delivering the outcomes reached by our Board of Directors and Executive Leadership Team. We will spend 2017 and 2018 consolidating and growing our financial position to create greater strength as we purchase land for the future of golf, which allows us to move into the advanced planning required to deliver to Members a major renovation and expansion of the current clubhouse and

its facilities. We know this is an exciting time to be part of our Club, and we are researching and planning for the future in a way that will provide services and opportunities for the wider community. We do so always prudently, pragmatically and with much care, as we appreciate that each dollar we spend of Members finances must generate an acceptable return on investment and that each service should add value to the Club Taree proposition.

offer. To realise this ethos, we support it by providing education opportunities through TAFE and other accredited providers so that we can make sure that our people can have their on the job skills recognised and accredited, or new skills taught and accredited. The Club Taree Community Team continues to be a standard fixture in our magazine thanks to the contributions our team has made to the Community. The team celebrated their 2nd birthday in May and in this edition we bring you some of our achievements, along with some team participation profiles. I am participating once again in the Vinnies CEO Sleepout on Thursday 22nd June. This event will see me spend the night in the corridors of McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle with little more than a cardboard box. I believe it is important that we appreciate the challenges that other community members face and hopefully my commitment to this event can help raise some funds for those affected by homelessness.

Our People Along with strong financial performance, we have great pride in our people, who work diligently and very consistently to deliver a great customer service experience to those who come into contact with us either over the phone, or face to face in the Club. We are a people based business and we understand that the relationship between service and people is critical and not to be taken for granted. We are pleased to provide opportunities for training and development to our staff and I and your Board believe that the hospitality industry can be a career, not just a transitional employment

The Club Taree Community Team’s signature event, le Tour de Taree will return for its third annual event on the 2nd July. This event sees the team ride collectively the same distance as le Tour de France in unison with the namesake event in France to raise funds for Ronald McDonald House Northern NSW. We have built a solid relationship with this organisation over the last few years and continue to place value on their contribution to assisting families of sick and injured children, many of them Manning Valley locals. We will once again in 2017 be seeking your support and encouragement to make this event a success.

We will spend 2017 and 2018 consolidating and growing our financial position to create greater strength

RSL Sub Branch 100 Year Centenary This year marks the 99th anniversary of the commencement of the Taree RSL Sub Branch and we look forward with great pride to our centenary year commemorations in 2018. We will be pleased to start sending out information on our 2018 ANZAC Day later this year as we will be seeking to confirm a number of items and events to keep the memories of our fallen, and the sacrifices they made for us at the front of our minds. Lest We Forget.

Members Rewards Program We are currently investigating the opportunities to increase our engagement with Members, through the implementation of a brand new Members Rewards Program which will result in your spend in Club Taree being recognised and rewarded with revised and increased points offers which can be redeemed for purchases and bonus rewards around the Club or in the Pro Shop for Golf for example, or gift cards from our Pitstop located near our cashiers. In closing, I once again take the opportunity to thank you, our members. Club Taree holds a strong position within the community because of your commitment and support. We appreciate your continued membership, increased visitation, vocal support and personal recommendations to friends and family. Your support enables us to further support our community, improve our experiences, and increase the benefits we offer to our members. In reference to these benefits remember that membership renewals are now due, and will close on the 30th June 2017. From then if you have not renewed you will cease to receive all the benefits of Club Taree membership. I wish you and your family a safe and healthy winter season, and look forward to seeing you soon. My condolences to Members who have lost loved ones, and as always, please take care of yourselves and of each other. Morgan Stewart ACCM, AFAIM, CAHRI Chief Executive Officer Club Taree 4

“To think that our small team of 60 people, in two short years, have not only provided financial support by raising $126,180.40 and contributed with 3669 volunteer hours, but have engaged our whole community in the concept of people making a difference is to be congratulated. We are all very proud of the positive influence that the values of the Club Taree Community Team have installed across our membership base. To all the members of #teamawesome, thank you. Stay Awesome”. Morgan Stewart, CEO Over the last two years we have marshalled at community events, manned registration tables for other organisations, removed fences for the local historical society, gardened, helped at community events, provided people power, sold raffle tickets, offered organisational support, hosted morning teas, operated gates, bumped in and bumped out community events. We have visited nursing homes and delivered cakes to other volunteers to say thanks. We have delivered bottled water to our essential

services, provided transport, cooked bbq’s, played games and made lunches. We have wrapped gifts, ridden bikes, kept time, directed, cleaned up and collected rubbish. Representatives of our team have held positions on organising committees for local community and charity events. There have been instances where event committees have changed the dates of their events to allow the Club Taree Community Team members to be involved, such is the value that we bring.

Favourite event Le tour – It’s fun, everyone gets involved and its good for my waistline.

Favourite Event I do like the ‘Make a Meal’ for Ronald McDonald House, doing the catering for the sick kids & their families.

Kye Favourite event Le Tour de Taree, what a great cause, I enjoy the challenge to do as many km as possible. Proudest moment would be doing 100km in one go – 3 times, and winning the Gold Medal in 2016.

Kristy Favourite event Parkrun, cheering on the runners, especially with our Club Taree clappers!!

Mark Why do I volunteer I like making a difference. Favourite Event My favourite event is le Tour de Taree, because it’s for a good charity, keeps me fit and raises awareness.

Kristie Why do I volunteer? I like to give and teach my children that it’s good to give.

Dan Why do I volunteer? To get involved with the team and get behind a good cause. 7

Sarah Why do I volunteer? I feel proud that we help the community and I love that!

Nicole Favourite Event: Parkrun, without a doubt.

Courtney Proudest moment Although all of the events we do I have loved, the highlight is easily the day we took the cakes up to the Nurses at the Manning Hospital to say thank you for all that they do for our community. The hard work, the long hours. I think I’m still on a high after that day, words can’t describe how happy it made me.

Paul Why do I volunteer? I love the concept of the Club Taree Community Team. It embodies the concept that people working together can make a positive difference. As an individual, a group, an organisation or the whole community, people we know, or people we don’t, whether the difference be big or small, or whether it goes noticed or un noticed, it’s not

The concept of the Club Taree Community Team was to provide an outlet of community engagement for our employees. In growth the concept has managed to rally our employees, our members, our guests, friends, families and the wider community to make a positive difference. The Club Taree Community Team could be considered the Heart of the community through its ability to create a positive and authentic sense of community that is so openly celebrated and supported by all those involved. important, what is important is that we came together with the concept of community at the forefront of our intention. #teamawesome is quite literally awesome.

Sheridan Why I volunteer? I volunteer because I like to give back to the community after all they do for us here at Club Taree.

Chris Favourite Event Le Tour de Taree, it’s the perfect way to give back, it creates great energy among the team and supporting families with sick kids is something that I feel personally committed to.

Morgan Favourite Event Le Tour de Taree, because of its business wide engagement, given that we ride the spin bikes in the clubhouse, at events with our Club Taree Community Team and even in the centre court of Taree Central Mall, for all to see and engage with us. Why do you volunteer? I want to give my time back to the community. Its sometimes easier to make a donation than to make your time available for charity work. I sleep well at night knowing I have ‘skin in the game’ with our community.

Do you need a hand? Do you think we can help you make a difference? If you are an organisation, group, charity, community project or cause we may be able to help. Club Taree is passionate about making a difference when and where we can. If you would like to talk about possibilities for engagement, support and fundraising please contact Paul Allan. catch up with Lisa Whilst you are reading the winter edition of Club Taree Connect, we are preparing our site for the 2017 Bridal Showcase to be held on Sunday, 4th June from 10am until 2pm. Leaha Stephens from Leaha’s Hair Studio has worked hard to bring you the best exhibitors from our area and beyond to make organising your big day just that bit easier and where else would you hold it than here at Club Taree. Weddings are an important part of our function life. Nothing is more satisfying than seeing that look and smile on a bride’s face when her dream wedding comes alive. Little girls dream of that special day, the day that she marries her Prince Charming. But every bride’s dream is different and my job is to discover that little girl’s dreams and make them into that day, her dream wedding. We have different venues throughout the club, from the lead up to your special day as well as the day itself. Consider your hen’s night in the Secret Garden. This beautiful garden has total privacy, its own bar and is an over 18s only venue. Imagine sipping a cocktail under the stars with those family and friends closest to you. Or if you just 9

want a small intimate night with a couple of friends and family, consider the Chefs Table which caters for up to 18 people. One of our function staff will be your host for the night looking after both your beverage and food orders. For the wedding itself, we have various venues, each suited to a different experience. The Auditorium is a set of four rooms with stunning views over the golf course. These rooms can seat up to 400 banquet style or can be divided to suit the number of guests that are attending. This area is more suited to the traditional wedding. Round tables set for 8 to 10 people with white table cloths and white cloth napkins, cutlery and glassware with your own bar. Ready for you to decorate as you dreamed. Two or three courses, picked by you from our extensive menu. Or you can put your own spin on the area, using trestles or half trestles, half rounds with white clothed high tops for a more cocktail feel. Then choose your catering from our canape selection. Another option, for a more intimate wedding, is the Terrace. Holding up to 70 people, with its tropical relaxed feel, you can choose a buffet from the function package or canapes from either the function package or the Secret Garden book. This area is also perfect for your guests to enjoy a drink and canapes while you spend your time taking those precious wedding photos.

If your preference is a small, private, intimate setting, the Secret Garden is the place for you. Holding a maximum of 40 people, the garden has complete privacy. Whether just for the ceremony itself, moving into one of our function areas for the reception or party on in the one venue with canapes and your own bar. This is the perfect setting for those not looking for the traditional wedding but please remember this is an over 18 venue. I receive many requests from people wanting to use our beautiful golf course for their wedding ceremony. If you are holding your reception in one of our venues, we are more than happy for you to hold the ceremony on the grounds of our stunning golf course. Just mention your interest and I would love to show you the areas we have available. If any of the above options are what you are looking for or if you have a different idea, please make an appointment to see me and discuss your thoughts and ideas. My job is to make your dreams come true and to me it really is not a job, it is my passion.

Breastscreen NSW will once again be stationed at Club Taree in 2017, from the 19th June through until the 13th October. In 2016 Club Taree hosted the BreastScreen NSW mobile van. In just on 6 months the team from Hunter New England Health screened 3688 people. 333 of these were for the first time. There were 26 breast cancers diagnosed as a result of these screenings. “If you don’t make time, you may never have time” BreastScreen NSW is running the Kerri’s Story television campaign to encourage women aged 50-74 to have a potentially life-saving mammogram. The campaign features the story of Kerri Welsh, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009 after a routine mammogram. On a number of occasions, Kerri had delayed the mammogram that ended up saving her life. Breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting women in NSW, with 1 in 8 developing the disease during their lifetime. For these women it is crucial that their cancers are found in the earliest stages. As demonstrated by Kerri’s story, early detection is the key to successful treatment - a free 20 minute mammogram every two years can save your life. Club Taree demonstrates its commitment to the community by providing a ‘home’ for the BreastScreen mobile van from mid-June until early October. While Taree women have always supported the BreastScreen NSW service, with over 3,600 women aged 50 to 74 years being screened last year, there are still over 3000 women in this age group who have not been screened. Take advantage of this free service while you can! To book your appointment simply call 13 20 50. • Kerri didn’t have a lump, so her cancer could not have been detected by hand through breast self-examination. • Without her mammogram, the cancer would not have been detected until it was much more advanced. • On a number of occasions, Kerri had delayed the mammogram that ended up saving her life due to work commitments. She urges other women to not be complacent about prioritising their health.

• The early detection of Kerri’s breast cancer by mammogram improved her outcome - she lost her breast, but her doctor said that if she had left it much longer the outcome could have been much worse. What can you do? We urge any woman in NSW aged 50-74 who has not had a mammogram in the past 2 years to call BreastScreen NSW on 13 20 50 to book your free screening mammogram. An appointment at BreastScreen NSW only takes 20 minutes, the x-ray itself takes all of 5 or 10 minutes.

Breast screening can find cancers when they are as small as a grain of rice, well before they can be seen or felt. Most women who have their breast cancer detected at this early stage can return to a normal life after treatment. • All women over 40 are eligible for free mammograms with BreastScreen NSW. • Women aged 50 to 74 are particularly encouraged to attend. This is because screening mammograms have been shown to be of most benefit, in terms of deaths prevented, for women in this age group. • About 75% of all new breast cancers are diagnosed in women 50 or over. • One in 8 women in Australia will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. • Nine out of ten women diagnosed with breast cancer do not have a family history. • Having a regular mammogram only takes 20 minutes every two years. • It’s important, it’s free and it could save your life. 14

on the course with Mark Spraggs

It has been very pleasing to see the heavens have graced us with some precipitation. It is always hard to tell how much we were going to get when the skies opened up however I don’t think anyone predicted 400mm in the space of a fortnight after the long hot dry summer we had just encountered. The rain although it limiting golfers availability to play with the cart restrictions did benefit the course by completely filling our main irrigation dam thus giving us a great opportunity to water all areas of the golf course again allowing us to get our fairways back to a position where when the dead of winter sets in we have full coverage again.

15

On the 3rd of May we hosted the NSW all schools event day here where we saw some of the future stars of our game from all over the state battle it out to win the event. We are now moving ahead with the over sow and top-dress of our tees for winter wear and coverage and will be using a transitional Rye grass so that when the warmer weather comes back, the transition back to warm season grasses won’t be as hard on the plant. Projects we will be looking to achieve on the golf course over the next few months when mowing isn’t as crucial as it is in summer, with the turf in a dormancy state, will be to complete

the re building of the 15th and 18th tee surfaces. This project is designed to finally achieve our goal of no Poa Annua on our tee tops. This is a shallow rooted plant that in summer dies every year and creates unwanted bare patches so by removing as well as re levelling the tee surface it will improve the overall health and playability of these areas. We have been fortunate enough through contacts in the industry to get our hands on a hydraulic root pruner – this is something we have never done here before but something worth a go in being able to run around the edge of our greens, tees and fairways slicing through any roots. We know

tips for your lawn Here are Marks top tips for keeping your lawn at home looking A1 well beyond winter. Increase mowing heights As daylight hours decrease so does the ability of lawns to photosynthesise, by increasing mowing heights and leaving more green leaf we increase the food supply to the grass. This step is essential and taking the mower up a notch or two should suffice. Decrease watering as air and soil temperatures decrease. Over watering at this time of year can increase the possibility of turf diseases or rotting of the thatch layer.

Fertilise correctly This means having a plan for fertilising at the right times with the right fertilisers. Put down a high quality winter fertiliser in May prior to winter arriving. The next application of winter fertiliser should be in July, 8 weeks later. Apply to manufacturers recommendations. Winter fertilisers contain higher levels of iron which are essential for good lawn health through winter.

Kill winter weeds Generally broadleaf weeds will become more prominent in winter as conditions for their survival improve and as the ability for the lawn to fight against them decreases. Best to treat them as early as possible before they spread.

Pruning there are plenty which will eventually help us keep water up to certain areas rather than the encroaching roots taking it up and the trees getting bigger and healthier creating shade issues as well as the multiple other problems we would be faced with in the future.

Overgrown trees and bushes may increase their shade levels in winter and by the time we notice that our lawn has started dying in affected areas, it can be too late to repair the damage. So it’s best to plan ahead and prune trees and other bushes in autumn.

Drainage is always a problem on a golf course designed on rock therefore planning and implementing some drainage into the place is and has been a priority for a while and we will start with the 13th surrounds when we have the time to proceed with this project. Let’s hope winter is kind to us and we can see a nice dry winter allowing golfers to enjoy a product that is improving all the time.

Proudly fundraising for How can you help: • Sponsor the team NORTHERN NSW

3521 Kilometres in 22 days. 1 team. Our third annual le Tour de Taree has a big goal - to make a difference to the welfare of sick children and their families. In 2017 we will once again be raising funds for Ronald McDonald House Northern NSW in what has become their biggest third party fundraiser – something we are very proud of. For the third year in a row our team have committed to le Tour de Taree. The Club Taree Community Team’s signature event. The aims of le Tour de Taree are clear. First is to raise awareness of RMH NNSW and its value to our local community. The second is to raise funds to help support the charity, and the third is to help build on our establishing relationship with RMH NNSW, allowing them to become one of our chief partners, one of our charities of choice and an outlet of which our team could engage with, support and make a difference to. Over the last few years we have developed a strong respect for and friendship with what we believe is a remarkable organisation. Mirroring le Tour de France, our events sees the collective team ride the same distance as its namesake event in France, 3521km from the 1st July 2017 right through until the 23rd July. Before our inaugural event in 2015 we decided that RMH NNSW would be the charity of choice for this event. It was obvious from the start that RMH NNSW held a special place in the hearts, history and everyday life of our community. As we rode people 19

would come and talk with our team telling stories of their children, their grandchildren, neighbours or simply of their appreciation that the services of RMH NNSW were available to those in need. These conversations were shared between our team members, and then with other members of our community and provided the basis of the encouragement that our team needed to not only ride, but to raise funds and to spread the good word of RMH NNSW’s commitment to providing support to our community. Some members told us of stories whereby RMH NNSW facilitated the ability for their families to remain together in physical and mental comfort during difficult and trying times at Ronald McDonald House in Newcastle, while others told of the benefits of a simple family holiday at Forster’s Ronald McDonald Family Retreat in providing much needed family time; which has been noted to benefit recovery from serious illness. We are very proud of le Tour de Taree and where it has taken us. The tour has enabled our team to build a sense of community throughout our membership base by involving them in

In 2017 our team will be once again seeking the support of our families, Club Taree Members, guests and our community. The Club will once again be themed in tribute to the race, and a number of new initiatives will be introduced to help raise funds for this extremely worthwhile cause. Our team will be riding at all times of the day, some during lunch service, through the raffles, over dinner, all to maximise the opportunity for engagement with our members and guests. We ask that our members, guests and the wider community assist where they can. If you can’t offer a donation, we ask that perhaps you cheer us on, and let our team know that they have your support. Stories from Ronald McDonald House Wil, Leanne & George Forster NSW “For us Ronald McDonald House Northern NSW was a life saver. The kind, generous staff and volunteer’s helped us through the most difficult time in our life. Without their support we wouldn’t have been able to spend almost 24\7 in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) with our critically ill baby son. Their kindness, support and help will never be forgotten. Helping us relieve the daily worries of travel, accommodation, food etc. The Ronald McDonald Family Room was a welcomed break for 5-10minutes to refresh, gather our thought’s before heading back to our baby in NICU. It takes a toll on you emotionally and physically and that little time out was a great stress reliever. RMH is an absolute blessing. To be able to stay so close to your critically ill baby and be so well looked after in such a loving and caring environment is so amazing.”

Matthew & Kerrie Taree NSW

Kerrie had twins prematurely at 26 weeks. She was transferred in an ambulance from Taree. They were shopping in Forster when she a very bad bleed and they sped to the hospital. They arrived at Taree Hospital, and were quickly transferred to JHH. Olive and Lorenzo were born the next day by via caesarean. “If the Ronald McDonald House wasn’t there, I honestly wouldn’t know what we would do, if we had to pay for a normal hotel it would have cost us thousands of dollars. And having the House close by as well, because the babies are in NICU it’s easy for me to be here and go over. I don’t have a car because I was rushed by ambulance. I’ve loved having the people who come in and cook for us, because that’s the only time that I would sit down and eat a meal and sometimes it’s good to talk to other parents” 20

Once again we are proud to partner with Club Taree to present Le tour De Taree. Stationery cycling challenge to raise much needed funds for Ronald MacDonald house during July 2017. Not only are we excited to be able to loan the spin bikes but we are excited to announce we also have your pre and post event training sorted now too. Our personal training team has recently received a boost with the addition of corrective exercise specialist Tim Thomas. Not only is Tim one of the most knowledgeable and highly qualified and experienced trainers we have ever had, has trained as a freestyle indoor cycle instructor. With qualifications as an accredited older adult trainer, he delivers exercise classes geared for those whose legs have a few more miles in them. Indoor cycling classes or spin as it most commonly known have a bit of a reputation as being a no holds barred, rip and tear class often used by outdoor cyclists when the weather

isn’t so good, adrenalin fuelled sprint intervals and gut busting simulated hill climbs set to a heart pounding soundtracks. Tim could see how that could be a bit of a turn off especially to the over 50’s and went about changing the rules toning down the sprint intervals, backing off the hill climbs and setting it to some classic rock and roll. (Not before being well and truly told off that in actual fact there are 70 year olds’ who are Beyoncé fans). The result, TLC Spin class joins our recently released specialist exercises classes and programs that includes boxing for boomers, TLC gentle exercise circuit and specific programs for various conditions including cancer, diabetes, heart conditions and veterans conducted by well known exercise physiologist, John Stevens and his team at Kinetic Medicine.

5 reasons why old doesn’t exist at Anytime. • Gentle exercise classes • Rehabilitation Classes • Specialist trainers • Senior Memberships • Safe, comfortable and private facilities Now we have all this we had to get rid of a few things starting with the word “old”… Gone… doesn’t exist no such thing in fact no one is too old to work out at Anytime Fitness Taree. Because age is only a state of mind at Anytime, our concern is level of fitness not age.

no such thing as old There was a time when those over 50 were encouraged not to do too much in fear that they would “wear out” quicker. But we now know that the risks of inactivity pose a far greater threat to health, in fact lack of physical activity in older adult populations is the first step towards cognitive decline setting up the risk factors for conditions such as Alzheimer’s, dementia and Parkinson’s disease. On a physical level inactivity reduces

our endurance, strength, flexibility and balance. The latter probably the most significant fear of those aging as it is crucial in preventing falls which is important because a significant fall as well as being painful can set off a very steep slippery slope of further complications as reduced mobility kicks in and there is also the psychological effect of lack of confidence in getting around comfortably in a world that let’s face it shows no signs of slowing down. Exercise while not quite the fountain

of youth, is probably as close as you can get to an anti-aging drug. But like any drug getting the prescription right is key. The TLC (Tender Loving Care) range of classes I designed provides just that, a little TLC forgoing intensity for stability or to think of it in car terms, we just turn the engine over and give it a little run a couple of times a week. vinnies CEO sleepout Club Taree CEO Morgan Stewart is once again participating in the Vinnies CEO Sleepout at McDonald Jones Stadium, Broadmeadow on Thursday 22nd June 2017. The Hunter based event raised $117,000 in 2016, providing financial assistance to those at risk of homelessness. The Vinnies CEO Sleepout began as a local community venture in Sydney’s Parramatta in 2006, the brainchild of a local business leader, Bernard Fhon, Managing Director of Tactical Solutions. With the help of Vinnies, business associates, volunteers and his family, Bernard held the inaugural event on 21 June 2006 at Sydney Olympic Park. In 2010, the event went national and exceeded expectations, attracting almost 700 CEOs in 7 cities nationally and raising $2.9 million to directly assist people experiencing homelessness. Every dollar the Vinnies CEO Sleepout has raised helps provide crucial assistance to people experiencing

homelessness, with the aim of breaking the cycle of homelessness. Each night in Australia, thousands of people stay in crisis accommodation facilities run by community organisations like the St Vincent de Paul Society. • Homelessness is unacceptable in a country as rich and prosperous as ours. • There are 105,237 people experiencing homelessness every night across Australia; this represents an 8% increase since the 2006 Census. • 60% of the homeless population is under the age of 35, dispelling the myth that the ‘average’ person experiencing homelessness is older and male. • More than 17,000 Australian children under the age of 12 have no home. A further 10,900 young people aged 12 to 18 are experiencing homelessness; most are estranged from their families. • 44% of people experiencing homelessness are women. • 17% of homeless Australians are aged over 55. Of these, 36% are women. Of the people who are seeking help from homelessness services like the ones we offer at Vinnies, 59% are women and girls. Not only are more women now seeking help to escape poverty,

women over 55 make up the fastest growing group of people experiencing homelessness. • According to the latest figures from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (2016)[1] one in five (22 per cent) were aged 45 years and over and 32 per cent reported having experienced domestic and family violence. • People experiencing homelessness are more likely to suffer from severe mental health issues than the rest of the population. • The experience of homelessness brings with it a heightened vulnerability to violence. • Unemployment, family breakdown and drug and alcohol abuse are additional factors that lead to homelessness. • Behind each number is a story – a fellow Australian who has experienced the extreme isolation and desperation of homelessness. Morgan is raising funds on his event fundraising page ceosleepout.org.au/ceos/nswceos/morgan-stewart Alternatively Club Taree will have donation boxes available throughout the Club from the 1st June 2017, any support you can show Morgan and those affected by homelessness is appreciated.

100 years of lions The 7th June 2017 marks the 100th Anniversary of Lions Clubs International, in turn celebrating 100 years of humanitarian service. Local Lions Clubs will gather to celebrate this anniversary with a gala dinner to be held at Club Taree on Wednesday 7th June. The Manning Valley homes the Lions Club of Taree, the Lions Club of Manning River, the Lions Club of Harrington, the Lions Club of Old Bar, and the Lions Club of Halliday’s Point.

A quick history In 1917, Melvin Jones was a successful insurance agency owner and a member of the Business Circle of Chicago. He encouraged his fellow members to expand beyond their business interests and seek the betterment of the community, saying “You can’t get very far until you start doing something for somebody else.” He also contacted similar groups, inviting 29

them to meet and discuss forming a new organisation. That organisational meeting was held on June 7, 1917 in Chicago, Illinois USA. Based on the success of that meeting, the first Lions Clubs convention was held in Dallas, Texas in October of that year, where Dr. William Woods of Evansville, Indiana was elected as the first President. Melvin Jones was named Secretary Treasurer and authorised to establish a headquarters in Chicago. The new association expanded rapidly, becoming international in 1920, with the addition of a club in Windsor, Canada. In 1927, the Nuevo Laredo club was formed in Mexico and a number of other clubs in Latin America quickly followed. With the addition of Lions Clubs in Lismore, Australia; Stockholm, Sweden; and Manila, Philippines in the 1940s, Lions were well on their way to a global presence. By 1950, there were more than 400,000

Lions in 31 countries and we would soon include every continent with the establishment of a club in Casablanca, Morocco in 1953 and one by Antarctica research scientists in 1957. In 1925, Helen Keller spoke at the Lions convention and challenged Lions to become “knights of the blind.” Lions enthusiastically accepted her challenge, expanding their service to people who were visually impaired. To allow people who were blind to navigate streets more safely. In 1939, members of the Detroit Uptown Lions Club converted a farmhouse into a guide dog school, helping to popularise the idea of service dogs. Many clubs continue to provide guide dog and other sight-related services, such as eyeglass recycling and vision screening. Through these efforts, Lions have gained worldwide recognition for improving the lives of those who are blind and visually impaired.

can assist fundraiser Can Assist Manning Valley is excited to launch this year’s major fundraiser. Held at Club Taree on Saturday 12th August 2017 is “Can Assist Manning Valley presents FABBA”. It’s already set to be one of the social events of the year, filled with great friends, amazing atmosphere, a terrific sense of community as well as plenty of opportunity for you to dance and sing along with all your favourite ABBA songs. Can Assist Manning Valley (CAMV) is a grass roots organisation, offering practical support and financial assistance to local cancer patients and their families. CAMV is a completely voluntary organisation, and our key component is that funds raised locally are distributed locally. CAMV is one of 50 Can Assist branches state-wide, supported by a head office in Sydney covering administration costs such as auditing, insurance and marketing ensuring that funds raised locally stay local. Can Assist Manning Valley (CAMV) is a hardworking and passionate group of locals who give of their time and commitment on a voluntary basis. Each of the committee has a different reason for wanting to help, whether it be through having dealt first hand with friends and family battling cancer and the financial challenges this incurs, or whether it’s just to work on filling a

ABBA

ABBA remains one of the most loved musical acts of all time. Here are just a few facts to take you back, and get you in the mood for a great night out. • Before they were called ABBA, their name was “Festfolk,” which means “party people”. • A 1976 ABBA TV Special on channel 9 got more views than the 1969 moon landing. • Benny and Anni-Frid were a couple, 31

void in community support within the Manning Valley. CAMV supports residents in the Manning Valley, through to Moorland in the north, Gloucester in the west and Bulahdelah in the south and also includes the Great Lakes. CAMV receives no government funding, and is completely funded through the generosity of the community. We are constantly humbled by any offers of support from the community, some community members host their own events to raise funds for CAMV, others run raffles, collect donations, leave bequests, make one off contributions or attend one (and in some cases all) of our many fundraising events. CAMV assists local cancer patients and their families through financial support such as the payment of utility bills and council rates, the provision of food and fuel vouchers, assistance with pharmaceutical costs and medical expenses. They have a strict criteria for the distribution of our funds and each request is filtered through this criteria. CAMV is proud to-date to have not had to say no to any request which has met their criteria, and to-date they have distributed in excess of $212,000 to just on 235 local cancer patients and their families. Sadly they all divorced in the late 70s and early 80s. • ABBA won the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest with Waterloo. • There are more than 50 ABBA tribute bands in the UK alone. • Between 1974 and 1982 they earned nearly twice the GNP of Sweden, but most of it went on taxes and to the record company. • A seafood company already had the name ABBA when the band formed, but allowed the group to use it anyway. • In 1977, ABBA could’ve sold out

in 2012. We take this opportunity the thank them for their continued dedication to our community and the support they offer to local people with a cancer diagnosis. Tickets to Can Assist Manning Valley Presents FABBA are available at Club Taree Reception.
