president’s report Summer has come around quickly once again and we will soon welcome 2018. Summer typically is our busiest time of the year, in particular December, where we will again welcome thousands of locals to Club Taree as the host venue of end of year get togethers, gatherings and Christmas parties. Club Taree has long been the Community hub for the Manning Valley, this is a title and association of which we are very proud and work each day to justify through the continual provision of quality products, exceptional service and experience based offers. In October I was delighted to join Morgan and some of the Team to attend the ClubsNSW Clubs and Community Awards as part of the annual ClubsNSW Conference. The Club Taree Community Team received a Highly Commended Award for the “Heart of the Community” category, placing us second in the state. This award celebrates individuals and groups who are the ‘unsung heroes’ in a club or the wider community. This award directly recognises our people for their continued commitment to the Club Taree Community Team, which they do with great enthusiasm, willingness and authenticity. The achievements of our Team over

the last few years through the Club Taree Community Team are nothing short of exceptional. The awards showcased just how committed the Club Industry is to their communities by developing initiatives, supporting projects, continuing engagement, and encouraging fundraising. It is remarkable the contributions that Clubs across the state have offered local communities throughout 2017. There were hundreds of Clubs stories showcased on the night as finalists and winners, and behind them hundreds more clubs who continue to have their communities at the forefront of their everyday decisions. In 2017 Club Taree continued its commitment to the community over and above that of the Club Taree Community Team. In the 2016/2017 (Sept – Aug) ClubGrants year, Club Taree supported our local community with donations, scholarships, financial support and in kind offerings to the value of $150,182.80. We are proud that by choice this figure exceeds our requirements by $48,655.27. 2017 has seen us continue many long term associations with local organisations, whilst also initiating new and mutually beneficial partnerships. 2017 has been a challenging year across the Club Industry. Attending conferences, seminars, and meetings allows us to speak with other Clubs and listen to their stories of success and of hardship. Here at Club Taree we have had the benefit of increased revenue across key business areas, enabling us to clear the project planning expenses which had accrued from 2009 in relation to the previously planned motel project.

as State Finalists in the Restaurant and Catering Awards, the le Tour de Taree, the Club Taree turns Pink campaign, the second anniversary of the Club Taree Community Team, the introduction of the Dineon19 Burger Co., the Stacks Finance Taree Legends Pro-Am along with continual improvements across the business, such as the golf cart storage area and the installation of the alternator allowing us not to be impacted by power outages and being able to deliver emergency services to our community if needed in the future. 2018 is already set aside to be a year of consolidation and continued planning for the years ahead allowing Club Taree to continue to grow for the benefit of our members, our guests and our community. As you will see in this issue of CT Connect during summer Club Taree will continue to offer you a great range of member’s benefits, entertainment options, exceptional facilities and dedicated service. On behalf of myself, the Club Taree Directors, Management and Staff I wish you a safe and happy Christmas season. I hope that your summer can be enjoyed with family and friends. Kind Regards Geoff Watman President

2017 has also seen many highlights, including the purchase of land to secure the future of golf, continued recognition 2

CEO’s report Here at Club Taree we are proud of the positive reputation we have, the respected brand we have created and of the support we have and continue to offer our community. our non-gaming revenue in response, we introduced new lunch and dinner specials and the Dine on 19 Burger Co, all of which are performing well and have introduced many new customers into our Club. During my second year here at Club Taree I have spent a great deal of time talking to people, members, guests and people from the wider community. These conversations have helped substantiate what I have discovered in my time here, Club Taree is known for its commitment to quality, in ascetics, in experience and in offerings. Club Taree is well recognised as a community leader in innovation, in support and in development. Club Taree’s people are recognised as the benchmark in the delivery of genuine hospitality. And Club Taree’s community focus is continually highlighted as one of our most defining impacts. We have spent a great deal of time during 2017 planning for 2018, 2019 and the years beyond. The Board and the Management Team are aligned with common goals to help secure the future of Club Taree for our members, and our community. As always we take our role as caretakers of Club Taree seriously, ensuring that each action is carried out with care and thoughtful consideration to the future. Our continuing revenue has allowed us to purchase 9.6 acres of land to secure the future of golf and to continue to reinvest strongly back into your Club so that we are able to offer our Staff, Members and Guests a safe and modern environment to enjoy your time with us. In 2017 we have not performed as strongly as 2016 in Gaming which typically delivers approximately 60% of our total revenue, so in order to grow

3

Overall though as we head into the end of our financial year in December, we continue to perform well against industry benchmarks in EBITDA which is a measurement of our cash generation capacity, all of which have supported our continued reinvestment of over $700,000 into facilities and infrastructure and of course our ‘big ticket’ costs of over $1.2M in Gaming Tax, over $500,000 in GST and an annual payroll of over $2.2M We will continue to be proactive and ensure that we care of our people and our Club’s assets so that we are ready and prepared for the future. Community continues to be highlighted throughout this issue of CT Connect because it is a part of our every day. The Club Taree turns PINK has once again been extremely successful, and I thank you for your continued support of this initiative. In October we said goodbye to the BreastScreen NSW screening van for 2017, where 2717 women were screened here at Club Taree. We understand that having this van does make some impact on parking, however we genuinely believe the value of the service offered out ways the small inconvenience. I offer my personal congratulations to the Club Taree Community Team for their achievements at the recent Clubs and Community Awards. It is an honour to see our Team recognised on a state level for their contribution to our community. You will also read of our Community Partnership with our friends at Ronald McDonald House Northern NSW. We are delighted to align our commitment

to community with theirs, in continuing to support local and regional sick children and their families. It has been 12 months since we introduced members pricing, an initiative which continues to reward our existing members, while attracting new members to join our Club. Our Team is constantly looking for ways to reward and support our members through a range of initiatives and promotions. Our Car for Christmas promotion has been our largest and most engaging. The Holden Cascada Convertible has also been a much sought after prize. In 2018 we have set out a range of member’s promotions which will work to continually engage our members, while offering them the excitement of quality tangible prizes with broad appeal. As we prepare to wind up another year I again take the opportunity to offer my thanks to the Board of Directors for their alignment, assistance, and collaboration, to the management team for their continued dedication, support, unity and insight, to the Team for their daily dedication to Club Taree with passion, professionalism and commitment and to you our Members for your continued patronage, encouragement and support. To you and your family I offer you my best wishes for a safe, prosperous and enjoyable Christmas season. We have enjoyed being part of your routine throughout 2017 and look forward to another engaging year in 2018. As always my condolences to those Members who have lost loved ones. Please take care of yourselves and each other. Morgan Stewart ACCM, AFAIM, CAHRI Chief Executive Officer Club Taree

heart of the community The Clubs NSW Heart of the Community Award recognises individuals or groups who are the “unsung heroes” in a club or the broader community. In October the Club Taree Community Team was named as the Highly Commended recipient in the Heart of The Community Category of the 2017 ClubsNSW Clubs and Community Awards. A huge congratulations is forwarded to our entire team for their individual and combined contributions. This award could be considered the pinnacle of the awards offered on the evening as it recognises our people, and their contribution. The awards recognise the outstanding social contributions made by clubs in their local communities. Over the years these awards have recognised thousands of stories from member clubs which highlight the amazing relationships clubs have with individuals and groups within their local communities. The awards are seen as an opportunity to share these stories, as well as celebrate them. The Heart of the Community Awards recognised the invaluable contribution that the Club Taree Community Team has made to the Manning Valley Community over the last two years. During this time the Community Team have volunteered some 4500 hours

and raised in excess of $170,000.

caring and supporting each other.

The concept of the Club Taree Community Team was to provide an outlet of community engagement for our employees. In growth the concept has managed to rally our employees, our members, our guests, friends, families and the wider community to make a positive difference. The Club Taree Community Team could be considered to be the Heart of the Community through its ability to create a positive and authentic sense of community that is so openly celebrated and supported by all those involved.

Along the way we have shared many a story with people in our community that need our help, we have also shared many a celebration for the differences that we have been able to make to individuals, groups, organisations and indeed the whole community.

Each member of our workplace has made a personal commitment to making a difference within our community. It has however extended well beyond our Team, our members, guests and wider community have all placed immense value on the contribution our Team has made. We have managed to take them (our community) on our journey of building an authentic sense of community, which is not something we had considered when we started, it is however something we will continue to nurture in the hope of harbouring a community which places value on

The Club Taree Community Team prides itself on a ‘how can we help’ attitude, a ‘let’s do this’ commitment and a ‘what’s next’ outcome. In 2017 Club Taree was also recognised as a finalist in the Health and Well Being Category for the support Club Taree and the Club Taree Community Team show to Ronald McDonald House Northern NSW during the annual le Tour de Taree.

Congratulations #teamawesome You continue to amaze us with your awesomeness

2017 Myall Lakes Community Awards The Club Taree Community Team has been awarded the honour of being recognised as the 2017 Myall Lakes Community Group of The Year. The awards recognise the exceptional contributions individuals and groups make to our community each year. The award was presented by NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian. The Myall Lakes Community Awards are organised by Stephen Bromhead as a celebration of our community. Congratulations again to #teamawesome. 5

keeping families close It is no secret that we here at Club Taree value the exceptional work of Ronald McDonald House Northern NSW in providing comfort, support and assistance to sick children and their families. We are proud to announce a significant three year Community Partnership starting from 2018. In November Ross Bingham, CEO of Ronald McDonald House Northern NSW along with Morgan Stewart, CEO of Club Taree partnered to announce that Club Taree has committed to a three year Community Partnership Memorandum of Understanding to cement Club Taree’s support of RMHNNSW through until the end of 2020. Club Taree started supporting Ronald McDonald House Northern NSW with the introduction of the le Tour de Taree in July 2015. From there our relationship has grown to include our Make a Meal program, support with fundraising and community engagement. Over the last three years the le Tour de Taree has seen $60,966.95 in funds raised for RMHNNSW. In addition to that we have provided sponsorship for events like the International Women’s Day luncheon and the Annual RMHNNSW Ball, offered practical support through the Make a Meal program, and provided fundraising assistance through the community raffles and their Christmas gift wrapping fundraiser. Our Team here at Club Taree is always eager to put up their hands to help support the work of RMHNNSW as

9

many of them have seen first-hand the services that this organisation offers so many of our friends, families and community members. This partnership will see Club Taree commit a minimum $15,000 annually to support the facilities, programs and initiatives of RMHNNSW each year through until the end of 2020. By the end of the partnership a total exceeding $100,000 will have been donated to RMHNNSW on behalf of Club Taree and its members. Of the partnership Club Taree CEO said “This commitment makes sense. We genuinely value the complete work of RMHNNSW. They continue to support families of sick children from both our local and regional communities, we trust that our commitment of financial support will make a difference by enabling them to continue each of their programs. Club Taree has formed a strong partnership with RMHNNSW over the last three years, it is a partnership we enjoy, nurture and deeply respect. Our members, guests and wider community annually continue to support our fundraising efforts for RMHNNSW, particularly through the le Tour de Taree which further cements our decision to enter

this memorandum of understanding. We look forward to working with Ross, Rhiannon and Donna to ensure that the funds distributed through this partnership positively impact the families of local and regional sick children”.

functions with Lisa

By the time you all are reading the summer edition of our magazine we will be fully into the festive season. Parties, parties and more parties. It is such a busy time in our industry and it is hard to find time to sit back and enjoy the lead up to Christmas which is why I love those days after the madness. As you can imagine January is a bit quieter for me here at Club Taree, after the pace of the festive season. Of course there is work to do, there is always work to do, getting ready for the year to come, booking in all the new functions for 2018 but it is also then that I get to spend that quality time with my family and friends, catching up for a meal and just hanging out. We all seem to take a big breath after Christmas is gone, the stress levels go down and we relax, just that little bit. It is also the time I get to complete those summer projects around the house. Whether it is the big clean up, pulling down the tree, packing away the ornaments or spending the day in the garden, by the end of the day you are exhausted and the last thing you feel like is sitting down to another meal of that left-over Christmas ham and coleslaw, which is still in the fridge, followed by the mince pie with brandy custard which has seen better 17

days. But you don’t have the energy to prepare dinner for the family either. So the answer. Dineon19. Put the family in the car, head this way and let us do the cooking and cleaning for you while you sit down and relax over a few beverages. Maybe phone a couple of friends to join you and make a night of it. And we are air conditioned. Escaping the heat, even if just for an hour or two, especially on those endless hot summer days and nights, is always a blessing.

our boardroom and I am proud to say that this is now available for hire to our corporate clients. Whether you need a space for an executive meeting, a place to conduct interviews in private or a place to brainstorm with top level management, the Club Taree Boardroom is the ideal corporate solution, offering contemporary fit out, a board table for ten people, 65 inch LCD TV with audio visual to board table connectivity, natural light, air conditioning and catering options.

The Terrace has been a very popular venue for this festive season but it is also the perfect place to book for those summer get togethers with family and friends. For $165.00 you can hire the Terrace exclusively for up to 70 people. We also offer members pricing which is another benefit of joining our Club. While we love to organise your catering, you can also order from Dineon19, making it easy for those “pay your own dinners”.

As with all our function venues, please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like to look through or have any questions.

But……in saying all this there does come a time when we have to get back into work. As quick as this year has gone, 2018 is coming and will start us running.

I hope that the festive season brings you all peace, joy and love and I hope to see each of you in the New Year and for those who are travelling, safe travels.

One of the projects that has been completed this year is the revamp of

2017 has been a busy year for functions and I expect 2018 to be the same so please remember if you are planning that special event, contact me as soon as the date has been set to secure your room as I hate to disappoint when the date people have chosen is not available.

on the course with Mark Spraggs

As summer and the end of year are fast approaching us, we are now in survival and monitoring mode. As the days and nights get warmer the insects start to feed on whatever healthy turf is visible. This results in our greens being the first target. We apply larvaecides as well as adulticides on a strict 4 weekly program, with water holding surfactant so that the chemical does not get flushed through the profile quickly and the turf stays fresh for longer periods of time. We do this same program but 8 weekly on tees and surrounds due to the longer leaf (cut at 8-16mm) giving us a bit more protection. Another problem we find is that due to the amount of water, our short

cut surfaces become susceptible to disease, (the three sides of the triangle as they call it, create disease) and when water is being applied to cool season turf during warm humid days to keep turf alive, we give disease every opportunity to flourish. As we don’t want to lose turf, monitoring using eyes, soil probing and testing for water holding capacities as well as infiltration through summer becomes critical with our prevention and curative application timings.

and completing their daily tasks and Daniel, Darren and Barry are getting the work done, whilst also using their initiatives and looking outside the box and cleaning up the one percenters. This keeps us in as good a condition as the weather gods allow us to be in. Therefore, I want to thank my guys, Morgan, the board and management team for their continued confidence and appreciation that what we are producing is not a finished product, although it gets a day closer every day.

On top of this we still have a Golf Course to maintain. So with a staff of 6 very competent and capable guys, it makes my job a lot easier knowing I can focus on greens, writing up programs, legislation compliance and future project planning. While doing this I know Ted, our Mechanic, has the machinery sharp and under control, Greg has the staff doing as they should

I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and New Year and I look forward to seeing you all out on the course or in our Club if not this year then in 2018. Kind Regards Mark Spraggs (Golf Course Superintendent)

Club Taree will be celebrating Lunar New Year on 16th February 2018 with theming and promotions throughout the Club.

2018 year of the dog Years of the Dog include 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, 2018, and 2030... The Dog occupies the eleventh position in the Chinese zodiac, after the Rooster, and before the Pig. In Chinese element theory, each zodiac sign is associated with one of the five elements: Gold (Metal), Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth. Type of Dog

Year of Birth

Characteristics

Wood Dog

1934, 1994

Sincere, reliable, considerate, understanding, and patient

Fire Dog

1946, 2006

Intelligent, hardworking, and sincere

Earth Dog

1958, 2018

Communicative, serious, and responsible in work

Gold Dog

1910, 1970

Conservative, desirable, cautious, and always ready to help others

Water Dog

Brave and self-centered, well-versed in dealing with financial issues

Lucky things for dogs • Lucky numbers: 3, 4, 9, and numbers containing them (like 34 and 49) • Lucky days: the 7th and 28th of every Chinese lunar month • Lucky colours: red, green, and purple • Lucky flowers: rose, cymbidium orchids • Lucky directions: east, south, and northeast • Lucky months: the 6th, 10th, and 12th Chinese lunar months

Unlucky things for dogs • Unlucky colours: blue, white, gold • Unlucky numbers: 1, 6, and 7 • Unlucky direction: southeast • Unlucky months: the 5th and 8th Chinese lunar months

The dog’s personality Dogs are loyal and honest, amiable and kind, cautious and prudent. Due to having a strong sense of loyalty and sincerity, dogs will do everything for the person who they think is most 21

important. As dogs are not good at communication, it is difficult for them to convey their thoughts to others. Therefore, dogs tend to leave others with the impression they are stubborn. Born with a good nature, dogs do not tend to be criminals or seek dishonest gains. They just need a quiet life and a good family and, therefore, forget the ugliness and evil on Earth. Dogs are always ready to help others and do not care about their own interests, but if they find themselves betrayed by cunning people they will feel shocked and hurt. When thrown into doubt, dogs think the world is evil and complicated. Then they criticize sharply when giving comments on something, and infer all things are according to their pessimistic point of view.

Good health for dogs Overall, dogs enjoy good health for they tend to be happy. Dogs are active

at sports and are resilient to illnesses, such as colds, coughs, and fever. In heavy work periods and frequent social activities, they should ensure they get plenty of rest in addition to taking proper exercise, which will benefit both their physical and mental health. Since dogs are not keen about seeking money and power, they feel less stressed and tense at work and in their home life.

Best careers for dogs Due to their loyal personality, dogs tend to choose a career based on the principle of serving others. Dogs are seen as valuable employees as they put their heart and soul into their tasks. They are easy-going and kind, and are always ready to alleviate the workload of others, which makes them very popular in their work circle. Recommended careers for dogs include a police officer, scientist, counsellor, interior designer, professor, politician, priest, nurse, clerk, and judge.

What does 2018 mean for you? A New Year’s Resolution or the idea of getting the year off to a good start has been imbedded in our social consciousness. Giving up smoking, losing weight, or travelling more, most of our intentions fall by the wayside in the first few weeks of a new year.

participants failing their New Years’ Resolutions was setting themselves unrealistic goals (35%), while 33% didn’t keep track of their progress and a further 23% forgot about it. One in 10 respondents claimed they made too many resolutions.

when they engaged in goal setting, (a system where small measurable goals are being set; such as, a kilo a week, instead of saying “lose weight”), while women succeeded 10% more when they made their goals public and got support from their friends.

A New Year’s resolution is a tradition, in which a person resolves to change an undesired trait or behaviour, to accomplish a personal goal or otherwise improve their life.

A study involving 3,000 people showed that 88% of those who set New Year resolutions fail despite the fact that 52% of the study’s participants were confident of success at the beginning. Men achieved their goal 22% more often

Social Golf Here at Club Taree we love golf. We understand that golf sometime takes a lot of time and energy and that these days, with family, work and everything else, that’s something we might all struggle with. We are excited about presenting any of our members with an opportunity to come and try golf by introducing a social golf package as an ‘add on’ in addition to your current annual membership fee. This will allow you to enjoy the social game of golf without needing to change your membership category and obtain a Golf Link Handicap Number (after completing the required rounds). Taking up a Social Golfing Package will mean that you can play golf seven days a week during Summer after 3pm, or after 2pm in Winter or at any other time as approved by the Golf Professional Shop.

This Social Golf Package does not enable you to enter competitions. Priced at just $5 per week, we think this is the perfect option for those who are thinking of becoming a future full playing golf member, or for those who just want to enjoy the social opportunities that golf can offer. Payment would be made in advance through until the 30th June 2018, whereby it can be renewed with your standard membership renewal should you wish to continue your Golf Link Handicap Number. (For example if you take up this offer on the 1st January, the cost would be $5 per week x 26 weeks, or $130).

We look forward to seeing you out and about on the golf course taking advantage of this great opportunity. For more details or to sign up to a Social Golf Package see Club Taree Reception or phone 6539 4000. This offer is not valid for existing golfing members.

hello summer

remember summer as a kid? You’d anxiously await that blissful time of year dedicated to sleeping in, rolling in the grass and spending days by the water. Who says those lazy days in the sun have to stay in your childhood? Whether you’re battling the throngs of a demanding office job or juggling three children between two arms, you’ve never deserved some summer fun more than you do now. Summer. In Australia it has been voted our favourite season of the year. You can catch yourself smiling more, and feeling increasingly carefree. Summertime sets you up to be more joyful, it naturally makes you more engaging with your friends and family creating some of our favourite childhood, and lifetime memories. We all remember the family trips to the beach, or the summer holiday to the caravan park, catching up with kids you haven’t seen for 12 months, we remember the smell of the summer bbq, the get togethers, the time Uncle George fell asleep and got sunburnt and that controversial backyard cricket game where it still hasn’t been confirmed if your sister did actually cross the mark. In summer everything is ok. As a parent it is ok to let your kids eat Zooper Doopers for dinner, and lunch (and let’s face it breakfast). It’s ok to start celebrating at lunchtime, its ok to have the music turned up a little louder, or party a little longer. It’s okay to serve your family a watermelon for lunch, and to swim before breakfast. It’s ok to just simply take time to enjoy the weather outside and the longer days.

1. Sunshine chemically lifts your spirits Thanks to summer’s stronger sunlight and the extra hours in the day to soak it up, you’re more likely to float through the day feeling energized and optimistic. It has to do with serotonin, a hormone that’s been dubbed the “happiness hormone” by scientists. When your body absorbs UV light, it produces more serotonin, and that pumps your mood. Exposure to sunlight also shuts down production of melatonin, a hormone that leaves you feeling sleepy and sluggish. It only takes a few minutes in the sun to rack up these benefits. But if you plan on being outdoors for more than 10

minutes at a stretch, be sure to slather sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 on any exposed skin, so you don’t ruin your happiness haze with a painful burn.

2. The “school’s-out” mindset of childhood still lingers Since kindergarten, many people have been conditioned to think of summer as a break from routine and responsibility. And this “school’s-out” mindset carries over into adulthood, where many offices offer employees shorter hours and casual Friday dress codes. Even though the work world operates year-round and responsibilities don’t suddenly cease, we reflexively feel more carefree during the summer months, like we did when we were kids.

3. Being in nature reduces stress We all feel calmer and more relaxed when we’re surrounded by nature — a finding reported by researchers all over the world. Studies from University College London and Deakin University in Australia show that going on a bike ride through a park, strolling along the beach or just inhaling the aroma of flowers in bloom makes us feel less stressed and more serene. Need more proof? A French study published last year linked being in a natural environment with higher levels of personal happiness. And a 2013 study in the journal Social Science & Medicine found that spending time near a body of water in an urban area had a therapeutic effect — so city dwellers can reap the blissful benefits of nature as well.

4. Organised holidays offer freedom

and routine to enjoy. Summer is typically “party” season which offers us opportunity to relax, unwind, and enjoy all the seasonal cheer which helps us feel optimistic, joyous and more positive about the year ahead.

5. Breaking a sweat boosts bliss-producing endorphins Another consequence of good weather: You’re less likely to blow off a jog, bike ride or other activity. And research shows that increasing your heart rate revs the production of mood-boosting endorphins (it’s the mechanism behind the “runner’s high”). Even if you don’t take part in a specific activity, summer sets up the perfect conditions to move around in less constructed but equally bliss-inducing ways — say by spending the afternoon gardening or playing tugof-war at a family picnic.

6. Social interactions are easier Backyard barbecues, pool parties, company picnics, al fresco dinner parties … summer offers plenty of opportunities for socialising. Humans are social creatures and mixing with friends, family and even strangers makes us feel part of something larger than ourselves, which is fulfilling. The pleasant weather and relaxed vibe help bring people out of isolation and gives us the chance to interact and connect.

7. Small indulgences are everywhere Trashy beach books. Trips to the ice-cream-shop. Afternoons spent lazing by the pool or in a hammock. Summertime is about taking time to smell the roses, so to speak, and giving yourself license to indulge a little without guilt.

Summer provides official holidays and extended time away from work 26

Managing the Ageing Process with Rich Farleigh

Rich from Anytime Fitness Taree has put together these tips to help us slow down and manage the aging process. No matter what stage you are in life there are some great tips here for feeling great and looking great. We all remark how time just seems to be flying by. However, when we take a look at some events within the period of our own life, reality can give us a slap in the face wake up call to just how quick it really does ‘fly by’. This happened to me a few days ago when I realised it’s been 37 years since Arnold Schwarzenegger officially retired from bodybuilding after his 7th Mr. Olympia win, Sydney Australia 1980. Just think, it is now 33 years since we first heard the now classic quote “I’ll be back” from Arnold’s signature role in James Cameron’s science fiction thriller ‘The Terminator’. Ageing is inevitable. That is a given. However, do we really have to just sit back and accept the degenerative process? The answer is no. Planning ahead with training and dieting can go a long way in keeping you younger for a long time. There are a number of factors which we know are involved in the ageing process. They are inflammation, stress, and blood sugar imbalances. However, there are some key things we can do, which can help to keep them in check in order to have a better ageing process. So, let’s have a look at these, in the order mentioned above.

Inflammation There are two types of inflammation: Acute and Chronic (also known as systemic or sub-clinical inflammation). • Inflammation plays a key role in both wound healing (Acute) and diseases (Chronic). • The redness around a bruise or wound is caused by inflammation – 31

the dilation of blood vessels brings more blood to the area and local swelling is from additional fluid being drawn from the blood. This is Acute Inflammation, which is of great benefit for the healing process of the body. • The other type of inflammation is called sub-clinical inflammation – this is a more unnoticeable inflammation leading to chronic ailments and disease. • There can be a variety of causes from poor sleep to smoking, to food intolerances or toxicity in the body. But the “sub-clinical” part means it hasn’t reached levels where it’ll cause problems right now. • What is a concern though, is that it can do major ravages in the body if left unchecked for a long period of time. It has been associated with every major degenerative disease known today. These include the heavy hitters such as: diabetes, obesity and cancer. But also things like Alzheimer’s, asthma and arthritis, for example. This is not an exhaustive list, but it should make you take inflammation seriously.

Stress In essence, stress is everything that disrupts the stability of our being – on a mental, physical, emotional or spiritual level. Stress comes in many forms from the blatant to the subtle. Major stresses include: • Marriage and divorce • Death of a loved one • Chronic illness and disease Moderate stresses include: • Work place situations (like running

late, staff issues etc) • Minor to moderate traffic incidents Minor stresses include: • Stubbing your toe on a piece of furniture • Forgetting where you put your car keys Every situation is going to have mental and emotional components, and while the resulting stress depends on how we deal with these, at the end of the day, it all adds up. What can also add up, and is not as obvious, is the physical effects stress has on the body. This can range from working out too much, or not enough, to being physically injured, up to and including lack of sleep and undetected food intolerances which promotes lowgrade, sub-clinical inflammation. The stress hormone, called cortisol, has a major impact on a lot of other hormonal cascades, such as insulin regulation, sex hormone production and thyroid health. It is also a major player in other very important functions such as micro biome regulation (our body’s ‘miniecosystem’), cognition, memory, digestion and absorption and immune function, to name a few. It can virtually affect every other system in the body.

Blood Sugar Imbalances Blood sugar is produced primarily from the foods we eat. We have two hormones responsible for the regulation of our Blood Sugar levels – Insulin and Glucagon. When we consume a meal, our insulin levels will rise – peaking between 20 – 90 minutes after eating, depending on

what was eaten. Certain foods will create a surge in blood sugar levels known as an Insulin spike and these spikes are overall very detrimental to the good health and well-being of your body. Insulin spikes are usually caused by a high carbohydrate intake. Insulin is produced by your pancreas whenever your blood sugar levels start rising, which mainly occurs after consuming carbohydrates from breads, potatoes or sugar. Some Foods Which Trigger Insulin Spikes: • White Rice • Breads • Soft Drinks and other sweet drinks • Fast foods • Packaged or processed foods • Whole milk (to a lesser degree) • Red meat (to a lesser degree) Effects: Consuming carbohydrates you don’t need can turn your blood sugar into a roller coaster and your insulin levels will be all over the place. This has several radical and important implications for your health. • Your energy levels will crash down, causing you to run to the nearest coffee machine. • You will notice you crave sugary foods a lot more. • If you have too many carbohydrates at dinner, it will negatively impact your sleep, which in turn will negatively impact your insulin sensitivity and thus create a vicious cycle. This is one of the main causes of the issues associated with aging. Insulin Resistance: Brutal spikes in insulin level have their consequences, too. The more insulin you produce over time, the more your cells will become resistant to it. Insulin is a signal. If it’s presented too often, for too long, your cells will grow desensitised, and your body will need to produce more of it for the same amount of carbohydrates. Insulin resistance is the first step to fat gain, diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular diseases.

8 simple things you can do to prevent Blood Sugar Spikes:

• Exercise regularly

1. Go Low-Carb: Carbohydrates (carbs) are what cause blood sugar to rise.

• Get adequate rest.

2. Eat fewer refined carbs. 3. Reduce your sugar intake. 4. Keep a healthy weight. 5. Exercise more. 6. Eat more fibre. 7. Drink more water. 8. Introduce Some Vinegar into Your Diet - particularly Apple Cider Vinegar (medical research suggests that apple cider vinegar ingestion can help acid reflux, lower blood pressure, improve diabetes and support weight loss. The benefits of apple cider vinegar come from its powerful healing compounds, which include acetic acid, potassium, magnesium, probiotics and enzymes).

• Have a balanced nutritional intake If you would like to know more about this topic or would like help with getting started with exercise, come in to Anytime Fitness Taree for a chat with myself or one of the other fitness professionals. Additionally, mention this article and you will receive a complimentary 1-month gym membership to get you started. Rich is currently working with Anytime Fitness Taree.

In addition, managing lifestyle factors is very important in the overall management of Blood Sugar. These factors include: • Stress • Sleep • Alcohol Poor sleep, stress and high alcohol intake all negatively affect blood sugar. That’s why it’s important to consider lifestyle interventions as well as diet. Solutions: • Exercise – improves cognition and mood and is a great stress reliever. • Nutrition – consuming a daily diet balanced with nutritious foods in moderate amounts. (Note: including healthy fats like fatty fish, avocado, nuts, olives and seeds will make you healthier and much decreases the aggravations of ageing). • Sleep - just like eating and moving, sleeping is one of the big rocks of life and aging well. It’s literally invaluable to your health, not just for your mood. Sleep quality can markedly impact on your health and insulin sensitivity. Best advice for improved quality of sleep would be to limit exposure to electronic screens such as TV’s, mobile phones, gaming devices and iPads at least 1 hour prior going to bed. So, summing it all up, to limit the effects of the aging process and live a better quality life with health and vitality we need to: 32

community raffles Each year Club Taree provides a range of support to our community, whether it be through donations, support, and sponsorship or in kind contributions. We are extremely proud of this support that we offer, and are constantly looking for additional ways to offer support. In March 2016 Club Taree changed its Friday Night Raffle to become the Club Taree Community Raffle. Each Friday we hand over the raffles to a different

community group, organisation, charity or project team. Club Taree donates any profits from the raffle to that week’s corresponding organisation, charity, group or team. It is a great way for any organisation, charity or group to raise extra funds to support a project, campaign or build support. It is also a great opportunity to engage with a different audience. If you think we could help your organisation, please contact Paul

Allan our Brand and Communication Manager who will be able to schedule into our Friday Night Raffle Calendar. Take a look at the spring roster, we encourage you to come along and support these organisations where you can. The more raffle tickets sold, the more profit they take home, the better the community benefits. Contact Paul Allan Phone 02 6539 4000 Email pallan@clubtaree.com.au

Salvo’s Christmas Appeal

This Christmas Club Taree is making a difference by supporting the Salvo’s Christmas Appeal. Since November Club Taree has been seeking donations from members, guests and staff. All donations are welcome. In speaking with local Savlo’s Representatives the key gap locally in donations for their Christmas Toy and Hamper Distribution is toys / gifts for children aged between 10 and 14. Some great ideas for this age group include books, sporting equipment, board games, and body hygiene packs. Any donations towards the Christmas Toy drive would need to be received by 6th December. The Salvos distribute emergency food hampers throughout the holiday season. Items in these hampers include: • Long life milk

• Jars of jam

• Baked beans and spaghetti

• Weet bix

• Tinned tuna

• 2 minute noodles

• Tinned soups

• Pasta sauce and packets of pasta

• Tinned fruit

• Tinned casseroles

• Packs of plain biscuits

Donations for the Salvos Hamper Appeal need to be received by the 22nd December. Club Taree will be collecting items for both the toy appeal and the hamper appeal through until distribution dates. Club Taree will also have donation boxes throughout the club in the lead up to the distribution dates. Any monies collected through these donations will be used to purchase appropriate items for the appeals.
