FORSTER TUNCURRY

At the northern tip of the Great Lakes Forster Tuncurry is where lake meets ocean

by National Parks and State Forests, with long stretches of secluded beaches. Boating, fishing, diving, paddling, coastal walks and dolphin watching are just some of the many activities for you to experience.

Combine these with unique shopping, arts and crafts and award winning restaurants and you have some idea why Forster Tuncurry evokes such fond memories for so many. Our waters are famous for seafood and are a fisherman’s paradise. The area is also renowned for its events, from triathlon and adventure racing; sailing regattas and paddle marathons to music and food festivals. This community loves to celebrate and you are invited to join in.

Forster Tuncurry

green point Green Point is a small, unique village on the edge of Wallis Lake mid-way between Forster and Pacific Palms. In spring the landscape is awash with native wildflowers, covering the small strip of land between Seven Mile Beach in Booti Booti National Park and Wallis Lake.

Within the village you will find B&B’s, cafes and some beautiful homes to rent. Along the shoreline there are walks and an access point for boaties. If you are looking for a secret spot to get back to nature and relax, then Green Point is for you.

PACIFIC PALMS

Encompassing Blueys, Boomerang and Elizabeth Beaches, Tiona, Coomba and Smiths Lake there is a special charm that draws people to the ‘Palms’

pacific palms & tiona Nestled between glistening lakes and the Pacific Ocean and surrounded by National Parks, lies Pacific Palms. Named after the majestic cabbage tree palms that blanket the area, Pacific Palms, or the ‘Palms’ as it’s known to locals, is a special mix of beautiful beaches, galleries, coffee shops, rainforest trails and some of the finest properties on the coast. At its northern end you’ll find Tiona, home to the Green Cathedral, a serene al fresco church.

Its coastal lifestyle invites you to go exploring. Chat with a local at the famous Sunday ‘Palms’ markets, be blown away by the views from Whoota Whoota Lookout, mountain bike on lost trails or SUP to a private beach. The ‘Palms’ is a place that draws you in and makes you feel at home.

Shelly Beach

smiths lake & coomba The small but majestic Smiths Lake is located between Wallis and Myall Lakes. Its warm calm waters are separated from the ocean by an impressive sandbar. Smiths Lake Village offers beautiful water views and an assortment of holiday homes set amongst towering gum trees and palms. The village has lovely coffee shops, boat hire and a lakeside caravan and camping park which offers remote sites.

The friendly village of Coomba, located on Wallis Lake, borders the Wallingat National Park. Coomba is actually closer to Forster Tuncurry by boat than it is by car, making it a great escape from the stresses of everyday life. There are holiday homes to rent, plenty of trails and the lake to explore. Also a favourite spot for learning to sail.

MYALL COAST

The Myall Coast stretches from the twin towns of Tea Gardens & Hawks Nest through the Myall Lakes National Park to Seal Rocks. Home to vast tracts of wilderness, this is a truly unique piece of coast.

tea gardens & hawks nest Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest lie at the mouth of the Myall River and reflect a relaxed, coastal lifestyle.

These twin towns are the southern gateway to the Great Lakes.

Tea Gardens has a close relationship with water and its cultural heart. The waterfront is home to a meandering art walk featuring works from local artists. There is no shortage of places to eat, stay, shop and explore.

The tranquil, beautiful Hawks Nest, with both ocean and river frontage, is located across the Myall River from Tea Gardens and boasts many holiday houses and beachside caravan and campgrounds.

The beaches have something for everyone from surfing at Bennetts to the safe swimming of Jimmys.

The area is also home to one of the few remaining wild koala colonies.

Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse, Seal Rocks

seal rocks & myall lakes From Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest you can journey into the Myall Lakes National Park, a spectacular blend of lakes, coastal forests, pristine beaches and a huge sand dune system.

At the northern tip of the Myall Lakes is Seal Rocks, a small, sleepy and isolated fishing village. Its fame rests largely on the beautiful Sugarloaf Point lighthouse and the sense of isolation it enjoys. Seal Rocks has a unique, warm inviting atmosphere. It is one of the few remaining coastal villages to have avoided major development, so you will experience a truly relaxing and uninterrupted stay.

Here you are a stranger only once and you’ll soon be part of the Seal Rocks family.

HINTERLAND

Beyond the coast lies a lush green region rich in history, agriculture and country atmosphere.

bulahdelah & stroud Dominated by Alum Mountain, Bulahdelah rests on the banks of the Myall River and is a perfect launching spot to explore the Great Lakes hinterland. Historically linked with the timber and mining industries, today this area has many experiences on offer including walks, boating, forest drives and the tallest tree in NSW. The main street has a distinct country feel and is home to cafés, restaurants and retail.

With an irresistible historic charm the township of Stroud is located deep in the hinterland along Thunderbolts Way. Combining a modern café culture with antique shops, wineries and over 30 heritage buildings, Stroud is a perfect place to relax and explore. If you are looking for something different, Stroud plays host to the International Brick and Rolling Pin Throwing Contest in July each year.

Bulahdelah Hinterland

nabiac & wootton The vibrant village of Nabiac has some great little gems, making it well worth a visit. If quirky retro boutiques and organic cafes are your thing, then Nabiac has something for you. The surrounding area is peppered with boutique wineries, cottage and farm retreats and lots of country hospitality.

Just to the south is the small hill top village of Wootton, a haven for tree-changers escaping city life.

Surrounded by acres of forests this area is perfect for riding and trekking. The Wootton Historical Walk in the nearby Wang Wauk State Forest follows remnants of old logging railways and mossy bridges, passing waterfalls, creeks and rainforests.

There is something about lakes.

They have a strangley calming effect which draws you to them.

The Great Lakes is all about amazing lakes. This region has an incredible and unique triple lakes system found nowhere else in Australia.

Wide expanses of open water dominate the landscape and influence their surroundings. The three ‘great’ lakes ~ Wallis, Smiths and Myall ~ each have their own personality.

1. wallis lake Wallis Lake is one of the cleanest lakes in Australia. Boasting crystal clear waters all year round, Wallis Lake is home to a rich seafood harvest including the famous Wallis Lake oyster. The lake is a barrier lagoon with a complex system of lakes, rivers and interconnecting channels that cover an area of about 100 square kilometres; so it makes sense that it’s a popular spot for all sorts of water enthusiasts. With its maze of islands, sandbars and emerald green coloured waters it’s little wonder this iconic lake holds a special place for locals and visitors alike.

2. smiths lake Smiths Lake is the smallest of the great lakes located mid-way between Myall and Wallis Lakes. Its warm calm waters are dotted with islands and bounded by National Park and the village of Smiths Lake. The lake is separated from the Tasman Sea by an impressive sandbar which, when the Lake waters are too high, is opened to release water to the ocean.

3. myall lakes The Myall Lakes are RAMSAR listed as a wetland of international significance. The four interconnected lakes that are the the Myall Lakes -Bombah Broadwater, Two Mile Lake, Boolambayte Lake and Myall Lake, cover an area triple that of Sydney Harbour. An incredible 280 bird species call the lake home more than Kakadu! The Myall Lakes offers one of the finest inland waterway kayaking experiences you’ll find anywhere. The lake is lined with campsites, fishing spots, tracks, trails and history.

NATIONAL PARKS

You are invited to explore our National Parks.

Covering over half the region these spaces are a part of the Great Lakes way of life.

1. booti booti This Park protects a narrow strip of coastal land with one of the state’s largest stands of littoral rainforest.

Bordered by Wallis Lake in the west and the Pacific in the east, the Park connects Pacific Palms to Forster and is ideal for those who like water sports and nature-based activities. There are lookouts, lakeside and cliff top trails, beaches and the Green Cathedral – an outdoor consecrated church. The park has some great trekking and mountain bike trails as well.

2. wallingat This Park is blessed with deep green forests, endless trails and tracks and Whoota Whoota, the highest lookout point in the Great Lakes. The Wallingat National Park contains eucalypt forests supporting a number of threatened plant and animal species. Things to do and see include canoeing, bushwalking, bird watching, mountain biking and scenic driving.

3. myall lakes The beautiful and remote Myall Lakes National Park offers countless opportunities for adventures, nature based escapes and exploring. The park boasts more than 40kms of beaches, forests, rugged escarpments, endless tracks and trails and spectacular Broughton Island. The centrepiece of the park is the lakes system which is one of the state’s largest and most important coastal lake systems.

4. port stephens great lakes marine park Whether you like to dive, snorkel, boat, fish, swim, surf or explore, you won’t believe the incredible experiences that await you in the park. The park extends from Cape Hawke Surf Life Saving Club in Forster south to Birubi Beach Life Saving Club at the northern end of Stockton Beach and includes offshore waters to the 3 nautical mile limit of state waters.

BEACHES

The Great Lakes is renowned for its beaches.

With 145km of coastline, is it any wonder? Some beaches are kilometres long - you can walk for hours and not see a soul.

Others offer the best surfing on the coast or are so remote you can only get there by boat.

lifeguard top tips 1. Always swim at beaches patrolled by lifeguards.

2. Swim between the red & yellow flags.

3. Read the safety signs.

4. Ask a lifeguard for safety advice.

5. Swim with a friend.

6. If you need help, stay calm & attract attention by raising your arm, float & wait for assistance.

7. Supervise children at all times.

8. Protect yourself from the sun. Cover up, use sunscreen, wear a hat & sunglasses.

Great Lakes lifeguards patrol popular swimming beaches (see table) from October to April.

The Coastal Discovery Highlights

tuncurry rockpool The Rockpool swimming enclosure is a favourite with locals and tourists. Located at the start of the breakwall with access to Nine Mile Beach, this spot has it all. Follow up a swim or splash about in the rockpool, with a leisurely stroll along the Beach or Breakwall. Head to the adjacent park and enjoy a picnic or cook up a storm on the BBQ, whilst the kids burn off energy on the park’s play equipment. Or simply relax and enjoy the view of the dolphins frolicking in the channel. The Rockpool Reserve also has a kiosk where you can enjoy a coffee, snack or ice cream.

Visit The Tanks for a swim in a rocky wonderland - safe in most weather and ideal for small children to explore the rocks and waters.

You can reach The Tanks from Head St, across the reserve.

The northern end of this stunning beach is home to the famous sand dune.

A run to the top makes for a lung bursting workout but the slide back down is much more fun!

A great spot to sit and watch the last surfers of the day as the sun sets.

cape hawke lookout

This superb lookout is worth every step of the 500m hike through littoral rainforest. At the top you’ll reach a viewing tower with 360 degree views, taking in the Pacific Ocean, Wallis Lake, Pacific Palms and the entire surrounding area. Don’t forget your binoculars!

This is a truly peaceful spot in Booti Booti NP, right on the edge of Wallis Lake. The shallow waters provide a safe place for kids to swim. With picnic tables, a large grassy area, toilets and a shady palm canopy there’s everything you need to while away a lazy day by the lake.

great lakes sailing club the green cathedral

Uplift your spirits by visiting the majestic open air Green Cathedral. A beautifully unique place with rough timbered pews and wooden lectern, it is situated under a canopy of rainforest on the shores of the Wallis Lake.

This al-fresco church is regularly used for weddings, worship, blessing of children, baptism and funeral services. The Green Cathedral is located south of Forster along The Lakes Way at Tiona. www.greatlakes.org.au › 23

The beaches of The Palms are uniquely spectacular. All can be easily accessed by driving the circuit that is Boomerang Drive.

At the northern end you’ll find Elizabeth (“Lizzy”) and Shelly Beaches. Both beaches face north and offer well protected swimming. Being the only beach that is patrolled, Elizabeth Beach has become the most popular family beach in The Palms.

At the south-eastern end of Elizabeth Beach there are pathways to the smaller Shelly Beach.

Intimate, secluded and edged by rocks Shelly Beach is private and personal. So much so that clothing is optional!

Boomerang Beach (“Boomers”) is arguably the best surfing beach in The Palms, with rock ledges helping to form great waves. It plays host to major surfing competitions each year and is a magnet for surfers.

Alongside Boomerang is Blueys Beach (“Blueys”) completing the trifecta of perfect surfing beaches.

Rumour has it Blueys was named after a cow which fell off the southern cliff!

Just past Pacific Palms is a small dirt road that winds its way down to Cellito. A boardwalk then takes you through littoral rainforest to a viewing platform and there Cellito Beach stretches before you with its turquoise blue waters and white sands.

Located in the Wallingat National Park this is one of the great natural viewing platforms in Australia. Drive right up to Whoota and prepare to be amazed with panoramic views across vast stretches of eucalypt forest, the expanse of Wallis Lake and the winding rugged coastline.

Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse stands on a dramatic headland at the eastern end of Seal Rocks village. Completed in 1875, it was the first lighthouse designed by colonial architect James Barnet and one of only two towers in Australia with an external stairway. It was originally built to guide ships along the rocky coastline, after a number of incidents, including the shipwrecking of the SS Catterthun. This wreck now offers one of the most exciting dives you’ll encounter.

A walk up to the lighthouse is a definite a must do on any Great Lakes holiday.

Today the Lighthouse Keepers’ quarters below the lighthouse have been refurbished to offer holiday accommodation. Sugarloaf Point is a top spot for watching whales as they migrate on their journey along the coast. You might also be lucky enough to see dolphins, down on lighthouse beach.

On leaving Seal Rocks make a stop at the picturesque Neranie campground and picnic area. Right on the shores of the Myall Lakes, Neranie’s shallow water and designated swimming zone are ideal for young families.

The Grandis picnic area just off the Pacific Highway, north of Bulahdelah, makes a perfect pit stop. Set among lush coastal forests it is a short walk to The Grandis, the tallest tree in NSW. The Hinterland Explorer Highlights

Nabiac is a small rural village with a great community spirit. The village is a wonderfully quirky mix of vibrant cafes, vintage shops and historic buildings. A Farmers Market is held on the last Saturday of each month in one of the prettiest showgrounds in NSW. Time sampling the region’s freshest produce should not be missed. A visit to the National Motorcycle Museum is well worthwhile. The Bullock Wharf on the Wallamba River is also an excellent spot to picnic or place a boat or kayak onto the river.

This lookout has captured the hearts of visitors for thousands of years, with the most impressive views of the Gloucester valley and the sacred mountain ranges that lay on either side, Mograni to the left and the Buccan Buccans to the right.

The best time to get photos is before midday, when the sunlight illuminates the eastern side of the Buccan Buccans. Facilities include picnic tables, wood BBQ and picnic area.

gloucester Located in a picturesque valley at the junction of the Avon, Gloucester and Barrington rivers, Gloucester is the perfect base for exploring the beautiful World Heritage-listed Barrington Tops National Park. Famous for gold deposits and the colonial bushranger Captain Thunderbolt, Gloucester today is a bustling country town where a great coffee and warm welcome are always assured.

Carved out of an ancient volcano, the World Heritage-listed Barrington Tops National Park rises from near sea level to over 1500m and protects one of the largest temperate rainforests in mainland Australia. Up on the plateau, there is subalpine woodland which regularly sees snow in winter.

Ideal for walking, bush camping, horse riding, mountain biking, trout fishing and even white water rafting.

Watch out too for the many wildlife species along the trails including wallabies, koalas, bandicoots, gliders, possums, echidnas and wombats.

You might also be lucky enough to spot a platypus in the pools of the Williams and Barrington Rivers.

silo hill Silo Hill is another stop on the Stroud Historical Walk. It is named after the underground silo’s that were used to store grain for the early colonies. Two cannons of Crimean War vintage are also on this reserve.

Bulahdelah Mountain, known locally as Alum, is an imposing set of tors that overlook the township of Bulahdelah.

This mountain was once an important source of alunite. A walk up Alum will reward you with sensational views. You will also see remnants of the region’s timber getting and mining past. www.greatlakes.org.au › 29

broughton island Take a trip to Broughton Island, stay a day or camp overnight. At 114 hectares, Broughton Island is the largest offshore island in NSW and is the only one on which you can camp among an active seabird colony - a truly special experience. There are plenty of opportunities for water activities - swimming, fishing, boating, snorkelling and diving are all first class.

Art installations are located in a trail along the Tea Gardens waterfront and across into Hawks Nest.

Donated by local artists, art works vary from murals, sculptures, poetry and mosaics, and all have relevance to the local environment and community.

Dark Point is a culturally significant site for the Worimi people and has been a gathering place for over 4000 years. This vast sand dune system will take your breath away with its sweeping unspolied views right across to Broughton Island.

An absolute must do.

hole in the wall Hole in the Wall picnic area provides easy access to the seemingly endless golden sands and rolling waves of Mungo Beach.

Take in the fresh coastal air and sweeping views. Head down to the beach and dive into the sparkling waves for a refreshing swim. The fishing here is also legendary.

Tamboi sits at the lower end of the lakes where the Myall River leads off to Port Stephens. Historic fishing huts line the banks of the river. Visit by boat or view from the walking track.

bombah point To continue your journey through the Myall Lakes NP will mean crossing the lake on the historic car ferry at Bombah Point. This area has been a popular holiday spot for many years after Harry and Emily Legge set up “Legge’s Camp” in 1906 - the legacy continuing today with Myall Shores Park.

Then take the 45-minute trek up the mountain to Rowley’s Peak lookout, where you can stand over 1000m above sea level and enjoy unparalleled panoramic views out across the park and the ocean beyond. You may even spot a wedge-tailed eagle soaring in the sky above you.

A short stroll from Wingham town you’ll find Wingham Brush Nature Reserve. This subtropical rainforest remnant is part of the last remaining 10 hectares of floodplain rainforest in NSW. It showcases giant Moreton Bay figs towering over a gently winding boardwalk and is one of the largest permanent breeding populations of the endangered grey-headed flying fox. Don’t miss the spectacular show at sunset, when the flying foxes glide overhead in search of food.

From the picnic area, follow Potaroo Falls walk approximately 1km upstream to the tranquil, scenic waterfall and swimming hole. At the start of the track, you’ll spot the largest recorded watergum in NSW. As the route follows the creek, it involves some rock-hopping, so be prepared for wet feet and a bit of splashing. Don’t forget to take your swimming gear for a dip at the beautiful swimming hole – it’s the perfect place for cooling down when the weather is hot.

Discover views of vast and varied landscapes from dramatic coastline to deep green forests to patchwork fields that blanket rolling hinterland hills. From an easy stroll along the coast or through an historic village to more challenging treks along headlands, through TA SMAN rainforests and up mountain SEA lookouts, there is a walk for you.

TIME: 2hrs return GRADE: Easy/medium This nature walk starts at the Forster Ocean Baths, known to locals as the ‘Bull Ring’.

The walk continues from near the toilet block through bushland to Second Head with two ocean view lookouts. Take the stairs to Pebbly Beach, then continue along the foreshore past the popular ‘Tanks’ swimming area and onto Bennetts Head, another great vantage point to spot dolphins. Continue down the Rotary Walk onto One Mile Beach sand dune and walk along the beach until you reach Palmgrove Park, before finally heading up to the secluded Burgess Beach.

This walk touches the Pacific Ocean and shores of Wallis Lake, with beautiful views from the headlandCharlotte and plenty of wildlife to spot. Walk onto the Bay stunning Seven Mile Beach & look for the sign posted track and stairs - this climbs up the northern side of Booti Hill. The track emerges onto the ridgecrest above Lindemans Cove and joins a fire trail. Go straight ahead for Elizabeth Beach.

Back on the main walking track cross The Lakes Way for a change of pace. The final 3.5km of the loop follows the Wallis Lake shoreline.

mungo walking track START: Mungo Brush Campground, Myall Lakes NP DISTANCE : 21km (one way) TIME: 10 hours GRADE: Medium Mungo walking track, in Myall Lakes NP, is a feast for the body, mind, and senses. A delightful collection of walks which joins Mungo Brush campground on the shores of Bombah Broadwater to Hawks Nest. It’s a long yet easy walk, taking in some important Aboriginal and historic sites and diverse vegetation. Set out towards the Myall River along Tamboi Walking Track arriving at the historic Tamboi Village. Continuing south, meander along old sand dunes on historic mining routes, passing a part of the track between Brambles Green campground and Dark Point Aboriginal Place which is known for its splendid display of colourful wildflowers. This walk can be done in a day or broken into sections by camping overnight.

The track begins from Bennetts Beach along a steep path which winds its way past smooth barked angophoras, gnarly banksias and grass trees. As the track veers north, take a break and admire the inspiring views up the coastline. The final section to the top gets rockier and steeper but along the forested ridge top you’ll be treated to coastal views of Seal Rocks and Tomaree Headland.

The Ted Baker Trail starts from the road just before the top picnic area and follows the tramline south from the tunnel quarry to the Ted Baker Lookout, which gives panoramic views across the hinterland and coast. The Tunnel Quarry walk is an easy walk from the top picnic area through a short tunnel to the quarry. The Mountain Lookout track follows the Alunite Trail from the top picnic area and gives you spectacular views of Bulahdelah and the river system. Keep your eyes open for rare orchids.

The Great Lakes is situated on the NSW North Coast, just off the Pacific Highway.

Improvements in the Highway now make it an easy 2.5hrs drive from Sydney’s Northern suburbs to Tea Gardens & 3.5hrs to Forster Tuncurry. With a journey of less than 2hrs to Forster Tuncurry from Newcastle. Travelling south it is an 8 hrs drive from Brisbane to Forster Tuncurry. From western NSW the drive from Tamworth is less than 5hrs.
