ESTIMATED DRIVING TIMES (HRS)

Take a Break While we all want to get to our holiday destinations quickly, the most important thing is getting ourselves and our loved ones there safely. Always drive within the speed limit, avoid driving fatigued and take regular breaks. This is the time to stop and discover a new legendary destination that you haven’t visited before. If you are experiencing the early warning signs of driver fatigue such as tired eyes, yawning, poor concentration or drowsiness, then Stop, Revive and Survive at one of the more than 1,400 rest areas and Driver Reviver sites across the state. Driver Reviver sites offer a chance to take a short break and a stroll. While most people always wear their seatbelt, one in five drivers killed on country roads were not wearing one. Wearing a seatbelt nearly doubles a driver or passenger’s chance of surviving a serious crash and reduces the risk of serious injuries. Remember to ensure you and everyone in the car is wearing a seatbelt for every trip and all children under seven years of age are secured in a correctly-fitted and approved child restraint or booster seat. New South Wales has strict drink and drug driving laws and NSW Police actively conduct roadside alcohol and drug tests. Drivers holding a full licence must stay below the 0.05 blood alcohol limit, while learner and provisional drivers must not have any alcohol in their system. It is illegal to drive while impaired by drugs or to drive with the presence of illicit drugs in your system.

TEA & COFF BISC EE UIT TOILE S T BRE AK

If you are planning on drinking alcohol or have taken any drugs, don’t drive. If you are unsure if your prescriptive drugs will affect your driving, check the label on the packet or consult your GP. Remember it is also illegal to use a handheld mobile/cell phone while driving. This includes texting, calling or taking photographs on a scenic drive. Learner and provisional P1 drivers or riders are not allowed to use mobile/ cell phones, even in hands-free mode, whilst driving or riding. Information provided by Transport for NSW. 7

There is something for everyone on The Legendary Pacific Coast Whether you’re interested in food and wine trails, surfing safaris, visiting all the legendary destinations, walking through National Parks, State Forests or whale watching – here is a snapshot of what you can see. Take a few days or a few weeks depending on the time you have and how far you would like to explore!

Day 1-3: Sydney, Central Coast, Lake Macquarie, Hunter Valley & Newcastle. An hour north of Sydney, the Central Coast embraces surf beaches and smaller exclusive beach hideaways tucked in intimate beaches and coves. Ever popular destinations are Avoca, Terrigal, The Entrance, Toowoon Bay, Patonga, Pearl Beach, Woy Woy, Budgewoi and Ettalong Beach. A Central Coast gem is the 300ha Bouddi National Park, half an hour from Gosford with secluded beaches, rainforests and coastal heaths blanketed in wildflowers. On the way north, be sure to visit Lake Macquarie. Nestled between the sea and the Watagan Mountains. Lake Macquarie is the largest coastal saltwater lake in Australia, over two times the size of Sydney Harbour. Here you can swim, fish, water ski, surf, hike and 8

horseback ride in and around its shores. For gourmet treats head to the Hunter Valley one of Australia’s premier wine growing districts with more than 140 wineries. Whether you’re a lover of great wine, food and foodie trails, an enthusiast of natural beauty and wildlife, or love a good game of golf, the Hunter Valley has it all. This region’s elegant colonial and rural roots are evident in the surrounding towns of Cessnock, Maitland, Muswellbrook, Gloucester, and Dungog. If you prefer the coast head to the city of Newcastle built along a spectacular coastline which offers pristine beaches, cranking surf, family friendly waters, shady picnic grounds and two inviting salt water ocean baths.

Day 3-5: Port Stephens, Great Lakes, Manning Valley & Port Macquarie. The Mid North Coast of New South Wales is all about driving through classic coastal country to quiet seaside towns such as Nelson Bay, Forster, Harrington, Port Macquarie, South West Rocks, Crescent Head, Yamba, Nambucca and Coffs Harbour. First stop is Port Stephens, the dolphin capital of Australia with hundreds of bottle nosed dolphins frolicking in the sapphire blue waters. Port Stephens has an impressive marina, great restaurants, shopping, tourist attractions and accommodation. A walk to Tomaree Headland is an established casual tradition for generations of visiting families. The Stockton Sand Dunes at Stockton Beach and the massive associated sand dunes form the largest moving coastal dune system in Australia. There are various tours from 4WD tours to sand boarding and quad biking on the dunes. On the other side of the bay, Great Lakes is a

paradise of intricate lake systems and stunning beaches embracing Tea Gardens, Hawks Nest, Seal Rocks, Myall Lakes National Park and Pacific Palms in the Booti Booti National Park with its fabled Boomerang, Elizabeth and Bluey’s beaches. The twin towns of Forster Tuncurry nestle where the Wallis Lake meets the ocean displaying crystal clear waterways. Further north the Manning Valley’s Old Bar, Manning Point, Wingham, Tinonee and Harrington are seaside and riverside villages. Located just an hour north west of Taree, is the legendary Ellenborough Falls. Port Macquarie is a thriving regional centre and its sister towns Wauchope, Laurieton, Kew, Lake Cathie and Bonny Hills add to its appeal with more great beaches, parks and river ways. The Hastings River meets the sea at Port Macquarie which is a four hour drive from Sydney and has all that you could want for a legendary holiday on the coast. 9

Day 9-11: Coffs Harbour, Clarence Valley, Ballina, Lismore, Byron, Tweed Valley to Brisbane. Travelling north of Coffs Harbour, Woolgoolga is home to the largest regional Sikh/Punkjabi population in Australia. Yamba at the mouth of the Clarence River is the second largest fishing port in Australia, famous for its Yamba prawns while Grafton, Maclean and Iluka offer inland and coastal towns for outdoor adventure and stepped in heritage.

Day 6-8: Port Macquarie, Macleay Valley, Nambucca & Coffs Harbour. A jewel in the Macleay Valley Coast is Crescent Head, a well known surfing destination and South West Rocks with its legendary Smoky Cape Lighthouse and Trial Bay Goal. There are camping grounds, great diving and fishing and the town has all you need for a great stay. On the way to Coffs Harbour, Nambucca Heads is a haven with a myriad of great value family accommodation. A trip to the historic town of Bowraville in the hinterland will take you back to the verandah town with its wide main street and history. Head down to the Jetty in Coffs Harbour for activities and attractions that will keep you busy for days. An hour after surfing in Coffs, taking a cruise, visiting the Skywalk, the Legendary Big Banana, taking a joy flight or riding a camel on the beach, you could be in the serene rainforest at Dorrigo along the Waterfall Way tourist drive. 10

Centred on an island at the mouth of the Richmond River lies Ballina. The town is brimming with things to see and do and is a gateway to the region’s outdoor playgrounds. From the Richmond Valley, why not explore the Rainforest Way series of drives through the World Heritage listed rainforests and National Parks? Or the Summerland Way as the more scenic, alternative route to the Pacific Highway. Lismore and Nimbin are must visit destinations with Lismore’s colourful and lively events and markets and Nimbin’s alternative and creative lifestyle offering a unique experience in the Northern Rivers hinterland. Soak up the atmosphere in Byron Bay with its relaxed, alternative lifestyle including surfing, yoga, shopping, diving and dining on fresh local produce. Visit Cape Byron Lighthouse on the most easterly point of Australia where it catches the suns first rays or take a trip to Mount Warning just north of Byron. At the heart of Australia’s Green Cauldron, the Tweed region offers a unique combination of World Heritage listed rainforests, lush rolling farmland and unspoilt beaches, nestled in the eroded caldera of the largest shield volcano in the southern hemisphere. Cross the border at Tweed Heads toward Surfers Paradise beckoning with a colourful nightlife. Brisbane is an innovative city with a free spirit and a long love affair with the great outdoors. Enjoy in its cosmopolitan eateries, cruise the river and relax on a beach. You have arrived!

Taree, Wingham, Elands, Comboyne, Wauchope, Port Macquarie Tourist Drive 8 is a memorable drive with a distance of approximately 250kms from Taree to Port Macquarie, travelling through the Manning Valley, Wauchope and onto Port Macquarie along the Oxley Highway. It is approximately 2.5 hours of driving time but take the whole day to discover the drive at a relaxed pace. The touring route between Bobin and Elands is not recommended when towing caravans. From the south, the drive takes in the towns and villages of historic Tinonee and Wingham nestled on the banks of the Manning River and travels up through Marlee and Bobin into the lush hinterland and onto the Bulga Plateau. There are 36kms of unsealed and winding roads from Bobin up to Elands and then into Comboyne, however the views from the plateau are unsurpassed.

Just a few km past Elands is the legendary Ellenborough Falls recorded as the second longest single drop waterfall in the Southern hemisphere at 200 metres. There is a viewing platform and a 10 minute stroll to the Knoll on the opposite side of the falls provides excellent photo opportunities. For the adventurous, you can walk to the bottom of the falls with 641 steps back to the top. Take time to explore the village of Comboyne before passing by the stunning rocky outcrop of Bago Bluff and the rolling green plains and patchwork hills of the countryside. From Comboyne, pass through the village of Byparra and the town of Wauchope on the Oxley Highway which can take you all the way through to Port Macquarie or back onto the Pacific Highway to head either north or south along The Legendary Pacific Coast. 53

Greater Port Macquarie A vibrant town with a rich history and culture, Port Macquarie is surrounded by waterways, beaches and a stunning hinterland, just four hours drive from Sydney and halfway to Byron Bay. Port Macquarie is one of Australia’s most popular holiday spots with its relaxed vibe and a variety of things to see and do from 17 coastal beaches to the rolling green hinterland. The CBD sits picturesquely on the Hastings River and features world-class venues, local food and wine in waterside restaurants and historic sites. The charming town of Wauchope is the gateway to the hinterland with a wonderland of drives through National Parks, State Forests and villages reminiscent of Yorkshire. Alternatively stretch those legs on a walking track, adventure tour or horse-trail ride. 56

For a beach, lake or river all to yourself, head south to the Camden Haven with its gorgeous fishing villages. Buy freshly shucked oysters straight from the calm waterways and experience unspoilt beauty where pelicans land and dolphins play.

Adventure on the Waterways Port Macquarie’s safe, sandy beaches are ideal for learning to surf, building sandcastles or exploring in rock-pools. Take it up a notch on a kayak tour, fast jet-boat ride or relaxed eco-cruise. From May to November it is one of the best places for whale-watching with close up encounters just metres off the coast and cruises departing daily from Town Wharf.

Food and Wine Enjoy top-notch food and wine at six wineries, a long-lunch at waterside cafes or buy fresh produce from the farm-gate. A growing legion of chefs, wine makers, farmers and producers come together at regular markets including the monthly Hastings Farmers Markets and the Laurieton Riverwalk Markets.

Koalas and Kangaroos Visit The Koala Hospital, the world’s only hospital dedicated to the care and preservation of koalas. Join the daily Feed, Walk and Talk at 3pm and learn about the adopt-a-koala scheme. Macleay Valley Coast Energise your soul, dive into paradise. As sunrise turns the sky purple, red and gold, a lone canoeist dips her paddle into glassy Trial Bay. At South West Rocks, several pleasure craft head out to sea for a day’s fishing or diving. Just 5.25 nautical miles from Hat Head, groups of friends anchor just above the continental shelf’s cobalt abyss to fish for tailor, bream, jewfish, mackerel and marlin.

Legendary Experiences. Our beaches On beach and point breaks from Crescent Head to Grassy Head, surfers take off on near perfect waves. Dolphins frolic nearby while families set up umbrellas on golden beaches or wander walking trails through pristine National Parks. Others enjoy delicious coffee and fine dining at any number of cafés and restaurants.

Our towns The Macleay’s river-side towns of Gladstone, Smithtown and Kempsey have been transformed from busy ports to historic villages, with turn-of-the-20thcentury architecture, quirky shops, art galleries, museums and restaurants. Lovers of bargains, crafts and organic produce head to monthly markets at Bellbrook, Crescent Head, Gladstone, Kempsey and South West Rocks, but can’t resist the chance to browse through quaint antique stores.

The Macleay and our people The Macleay River meanders lazily down the Great Dividing Range through forested hills and undulating farmland. This magical valley once echoed with didgeridoos and tap sticks and was home to musicians Slim Dusty and Joe Robinson. On the banks of the river, heritage-listed Bellbrook reflects an era when bullock teams hauled cedar. In this pristine wilderness, fishers cast for perch and soak up the peaceful surrounds. Remnants of timber-getting communities are still visible in the high country. En route to Kookaburra and Daisy Plains, undulating farmland and forested hills soon give way to razorback ridges and plunging valleys. At Mary’s View Lookout, eagles soar past.

In 1968 the Shortboard Revolution kick-started by Bob McTavish and Dick Brewer shifted out of Sydney to the Northern Rivers. The clunky full-templated 8 footers rapidly morphed into little 6-foot pointed-nosed sleek mini-guns. The high-class waves at Lennox and Angourie were the proving grounds, the racetrack, the fun parlor for the ongoing Shortboard Revolution. Templates, rockers, fins, flex, and rails all went through extremes, then were whittled down to the practical and the functional. The power of the elements, the addictiveness of the wonderful creation of the ocean and the peeling waves that spin along the Northern Rivers points are all in evidence for the adventurous traveller along The Legendary Pacific Coast.
