Getting around You can start your legendary journey in Sydney or Brisbane, sticking to the Pacific Coast corridor or diverting off the highway to discover the legendary towns and unforgettable experiences spread across the numerous destinations.

By road Take extra care when towing a trailer, caravan or other vehicle and always ensure your vehicle is roadworthy for the trip. Self drive, hire a car or camper or take a coach. Sydney has numerous tunnels and tollways operating in parts of the city. Many of these operate on electronic tags or a pass (check with rta.nsw.gov. au for more details). Once across the Sydney Harbour Bridge look for signs directing to the Pacific Highway. If travelling south from Brisbane, note they also have a network of tollways (for more information, visit www.tmr.qld.gov.au).

Signage & safety tips While we all want to get to our holiday destination quickly, we need to take care when travelling. Here are some tips: • Take breaks regularly • Respect the speed limit and; • Avoid driving fatigued and look for early warning signs - yawning, poor concentration, sore eyes or drowsiness.

Signage Take advantage of the Stop, Revive and Survive at one of the more than 1,400 rest areas and Driver Reviver sites across the state. Driver Reviver sites offer a chance to take a safe break and stretch your legs safely.

Know the law

Seatbelts Remember to ensure everyone travelling in the car is wearing a seatbelt at all times. One in five drivers are still killed in country areas when not wearing a seatbelt. Wearing a seatbelt nearly doubles your chance of surviving a serious crash and reduces the risk of serious injury. Children under seven years of age are required to be secured in a correctly fitted and approved child restraint or booster seat.

New South Wales has strict drink driving and drug laws and NSW Police actively conduct roadside alcohol and drug tests. Drivers holding a full license must stay below the 0.05 blood alcohol limit, while learner and provisional drivers must not have any alcohol in their system. It is illegal to drive while impaired by drugs or drive with the presence of illicit drugs in your system. If you are unsure if your prescriptive drugs will affect your driving, check the label on the packet or consult your GP. Remember it is also illegal to use a handheld mobile/cellphone while driving. This includes texting, calling or taking photographs on a scenic drive. Learner and provisional P1 drivers or riders and are not allowed to use mobile /cell phones, even in hands free mode, whilst driving or riding. Information provided by Transport for NSW.

Take a tunnel tour of Fort Scratchley, the only coastal fort in Australia to have returned fire at an enemy vessel during a time of war, and stay for the 1pm firing of the 6” gun. The Museum has three permanent exhibitions detailing Newcastle’s past and present and the Art Gallery houses the second largest collection in NSW. • Experience Newcastle’s famous harbour with a 2UPSUP stand up paddle boarding lesson or Newcastle Kayak Tour. • Enjoy a coffee at The Edwards, One Penny Black, Ground Floor or Saluna. Newcastle is fast becoming known for its exceptional coffee.

Giant Moreton Bay figs dominate the Brush along with one of the largest permanent breeding populations of Grey-headed flying foxes. If you get to The Brush on sunset, the sight of thousands of flying foxes heading out for the evening meal is aweinspiring. Cattai Wetlands is the hidden gem of the Manning Valley. Cattai is a beautiful coastal wetland that provides a sanctuary for over 170 different species of birds, kangaroos, wallabies, goannas and koalas. After you’ve soaked up the amazing view, enjoy a walk through the rainforest at The Pines picnic area.

Alternatively, a short walk from the Smoky Cape Lighthouse are the Smoky Cape Lighthouse B&B and Cottages with the best views on the coast this is a must do.

• Visit Smoky Cape Lighthouse perched high on a headland in the beautiful Hat Head National Park. This lighthouse is the most elevated lighthouse in NSW and is beautiful as the views it offers – check out its winding staircase and octagonal tower, or call Pat for a self guided tour. • Step back in time for a guided tour of Trial Bay Gaol, soaking up the history and amazing coastal views that surround it. For those with a bit more time, try the nearby Powder Magazine walking track or Monument Hill walking track.

For lunch • Depart South West Rocks and head towards Kempsey to historic, grand Netherby River Café, located on the banks of the mighty Macleay River near the town’s main traffic bridge. The afternoon • Continue driving to the costal township of Crescent Head. Get the surf board out or hire one in town and experience the magic of Crescent Head Surfing Reserve. Home of the Malibu Classic, the beaches here have been a mecca for surfers for generations.

On your journey north from Ballina following Tourist Drive 30, one of the most scenic beach drives in this country, view the Aboriginal murals within the Angels Beach Jingi Wahla Reconciliation Tunnel. These paintings tell the creation story of the Bundjalung Nation.

Learn about our regional produce at Summerland House Farm, a working macadamia and avocado property set in the hills of the Alstonville plateau. Escape to Victoria Park Nature Reserve - one of the last remnants of the Big Scrub, the rainforest prominent to the natural landscape of the Northern Rivers region. On your journey collect seasonal fresh produce from the roadside fruit stalls. Stop in at Empire Vale where we recommend mailing a postcard from Australia’s smallest post office right by the river bank. Day 1 The morning Discover the Tweed Coast, only 15 minutes from the Gold Coast International Airport. Spend the morning snorkelling with turtles at Cook Island, only 600m from the shore at Fingal Head. Your first stop this morning is Tropical Fruit World, an eco-tourist destination (8km from Salt Village) where fruit growing is blended with a native reserve of rainforest trails, landscaped waterways and native animals. The farm grows over 500 different varieties of tropical and rare fruits.

Day 2 – Lake Macquarie to Newcastle (1 hr 20 mins / 95km)

Heading North over the Sydney Harbour Bridge you will be driving to Lake Macquarie, home to the largest permanent coastal saltwater lake in the southern hemisphere, 30 kilometres of pristine coastline and some of the most beautiful forests in New South Wales. • Discover Lake Macquarie from the water. Hire a boat, charter a yacht or jump in a kayak and discover the many sandy inlets, islands and secluded bays of the lake’s aquatic playground. • Explore the natural wonders of the sea caves and rock pools located at the southern end of Caves Beach. For lunch • Discover your wild side at Currumbin’s iconic wildlife attraction, Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. There are hundreds of native Australian animals on display in natural bushland and rainforest settings throughout the park. • Fuel up with lunch at the Sanctuary Café. There are plenty of options to please the whole family before venturing out to see more of the native wildlife.

The afternoon • Take off from Coolangatta and capture the contrast of the Southern Gold Coast’s golden shores and green hinterland from the air in a state-of-the art helicopter with ABC Heli tours. • After you’re back on the ground, head along the oceanway path from Kirra to Coolangatta.
