The Legendary Pacific Coast is Australia’s most popular touring drive. It travels along the east coast of Australia between the capital cities of Sydney and Brisbane. This leading touring route annually attracts more than 80 per cent of all international visitors to regional NSW and 45 per cent of international visitor nights. International air access is through Sydney, Brisbane and the Gold Coast. There are regular domestic jet air services into regional airports along the route at Newcastle, Port Macquarie, Coffs Harbour and Ballina-Byron Bay. Getting around You can start your legendary journey in Sydney or Brisbane, sticking to the Pacific Coast corridor or diverting off the highway to discover the legendary towns and unforgettable experiences spread across the numerous destinations.

By road Take extra care when towing a trailer, caravan or other vehicle and always ensure your vehicle is roadworthy for the trip. Self drive, hire a car or camper or take a coach. Sydney has numerous tunnels and tollways operating in parts of the city. Many of these operate on electronic tags or a pass (check with rta.nsw.gov.au for more details).

Stop, Revive and Survive at one of the more than 1,400 rest areas and Driver Reviver sites across the state. Driver Reviver sites offer a chance to take a safe break and stretch your legs safely.

Seatbelts Remember to ensure everyone travelling in the car is wearing a seatbelt at all times. One in five drivers are still killed in country areas when not wearing a seatbelt. Wearing a seatbelt nearly doubles your chance of surviving a serious crash and reduces the risk of serious injury. Children under seven years of age are required to be secured in a correctly fitted and approved child restraint or booster seat.

Know the Law New South Wales has strict drink driving and drug laws and NSW Police actively conduct roadside alcohol and drug tests. Drivers holding a full license must stay below the 0.05 blood alcohol limit, while learner and provisional drivers must not have any alcohol in their system. It is illegal to drive while impaired by drugs or drive with the presence of illicit drugs in your system. If you are unsure if your prescriptive drugs will affect your driving, check the label on the packet or consult your GP. Remember it is also illegal to use a handheld mobile/cellphone while driving. This includes texting, calling or taking photographs on a scenic drive. Learner and provisional P1 drivers or riders and are not allowed to use mobile /cell phones, even in hands free mode, whilst driving or riding. Information provided by Transport for NSW.

Day 1: Sydney to Hunter Valley (2.5 hrs/221.2km) Leaving Sydney two hours to the north is the Hunter Valley. At 180 years young, the Hunter Valley is Australia’s oldest and best-known wine region and is soaked in history, but is certainly not a museum piece. It’s a dynamic and fascinating area that brims with over 150 top-class wineries, 65 indulgent restaurants and 180 places to stay as well as gourmet produce, boutique breweries, special experiences and friendly local communities. • Rise early for a hot-air balloon or helicopter flight over the vineyards. • Discover over 150 cellar doors or dine out in one of the many vineyard venues in summer or inside a cellar with a crackling fire in winter.

• Picnic and get up close and personal with one of Australia’s best loved native animals, the koala. Featuring bushwalking trails, peaceful picnic settings, a diverse range of habitats and ecosystems and wildlife exhibits, Blackbutt Reserve is one of Newcastle’s most popular attractions. • Enjoy a drink by the foreshore at Honeysuckle precinct, one of the best places in Newcastle to sit back and unwind with a drink and meal and watch the passing parade of freight ships, sailing boats, kayaks, fishing boats, tugs and ferries navigate Newcastle’s busy harbour. Day 4: Newcastle to Port Macquarie (3hrs/245 km)

Day 2: Hunter Valley • Take the opportunity to treat both you and your partner at any of the many luxury day-spa indulgences available in the Hunter Valley. • Book ahead for one of the many outdoor events; music, opera or theatre hosted in the Hunter Valley amongst the backdrop of vines. Overnight: Hunter Valley

Day 3: Hunter Valley to Newcastle (1hr 40mins/126km) Newcastle is the second largest city in NSW and is in the midst of a renaissance. It is fast becoming known for its quirky culture, thriving cafes and restaurants and artisan retail offerings. Newcastle has five popular surfing beaches connected by a 7km coastal walk, the ‘Bathers Way’. 4

Today’s journey will take you to Port Macquarie home of the world’s only Koala Hospital, fresh salty air, frolicking dolphins, 17 sandy beaches, river systems, coastal rainforests, National Parks and romantic retreats. • Visit Sea Acres National Park one of the largest, least disturbed and most diverse coastal rainforests in NSW. The 1.3km accessible elevated rainforest boardwalk lets you enjoy the sights, sounds and tranquility of this rare subtropical rainforest. For a unique experience book a bush tucker tour with a local Aboriginal guide. • Dinner at the Corner Restaurant, voted Australia’s best restaurant at the Australian Tourism Awards. Day 5: Port Macquarie to Byron Bay (5hrs/405km) Arrive in Byron Bay to watch the sunset and dine by the beach or at any one of the number of choices on offer. Wander around town and listen to talented local musicians and buskers. Byron is a much loved coastal town legendary for its hippy, surfing culture, laid back lifestyle and strong community spirit. Overnight: Byron Bay

Day 6: Byron Bay • Swim the bay at 8am with the locals in the morning at the surf club to see turtles, manta rays and sometimes a harmless wobbygong shark. Finish with breakfast at the Pass Café. • Meander around the local farmers or weekend markets brimming with unusual and artistic products and award winning local produce stalls. • Take a surf class together from a range of legendary surfers and schools. Day 7 Blissed out and connected, travel home or to onward destinations from Gold Coast or Brisbane Airport (1 hour) from Coolangatta.

Day 1: Sydney to Lake Macquarie

Heading north over the Sydney Harbour Bridge you will be driving towards Lake Macquarie, home to the largest permanent coastal saltwater lake in the southern hemisphere, 30 kilometres of pristine coastline and some of the most beautiful forests in New South Wales.

Port Stephens is legendary for its nature and abundance of aquatic marine life and land activities. You will be able to take your pick of nature based activities including dolphin and whale watching cruises, diving, snorkelling, kayaking and sailing. After a day filled with adventure, enjoy a Whale Ale or another local brew and dine on local farmgate producers, freshly caught seafood, oyster farms, macadamias, olives and figs.

• Discover Lake Macquarie from the water. Hire a boat, charter a yacht or jump in a kayak and discover the many sandy inlets, islands and secluded bays of the lake’s aquatic playground. • Explore the natural wonders of the sea caves and rock pools located at the southern end of Caves Beach. Enjoy beautiful coastal views and take an afternoon stroll along the Caves Beach Walk. End the day watching the sunset with a dinner at the Caves Beachside Resort. Overnight: Lake Macquarie

• Take a morning hike to the summit of Mount Tomaree and see some of the most spectacular views on the east coast of Australia. From May to November keep your eyes out for the majestic humpback whales as they make their way past the Port Stephens coastline. • Organise a day’s snorkeling at the incredible Worimi Conservation Lands or a snorkel with the 160 resident dolphins who live in a pristine marine park that is over 2 ½ times the size of Sydney Harbour.

Day 2: Lake Macquarie to Newcastle

Newcastle has five popular surfing beaches connected by a 7km coastal walk ‘Bathers Way’. • Experience Newcastle’s spectacular coastline and surfing beaches. Learn to surf, paddleboard or kite surf with an expert instructor from Surfest Surfschool, Newcastle Kite Surfing School or 2UP Stand Up Paddleboarding. • Take a dip in the Bogey Hole, which was cut into ocean rocks by convict labour in 1819. You will realise the convicts amazing achievement when you see the waves crashing into the pool. Overnight: Newcastle

(4hours /335km) Coffs Coast is renowned for its reefs, rivers and rainforest, quaint villages, World Heritage National Parks, mountain escarpments, 90km of sandy beaches, islands and marine reserves. • Explore rapids and gorges on the scenic Nymboida River or try NSW’s only surf rafting experience. • Take a morning boat ride out to South Solitary Islands whale watching with Jetty Dive before enjoying a scuba dive experience amongst 550 species of fish in and around the reef. Day 5: Coffs Harbour to Byron Bay

Byron Bay is a mecca for nature lovers, adventures, surfers and travellers from all over the world who come here to soak up the bohemian culture, healing vibes, health and wellbeing activities this vibrant and colourful town has to offer.

The Tweed region offers dramatic mountain ranges, World Heritage rainforests, uncrowded first class surf beaches, abundant produce from rich fertile volcanic soils, nature and an array of local galleries, artists and artisans.

• Rise early and walk the lighthouse, Australia’s most easterly point and picnic at The Pass to watch the surfing dolphins. • Take a surfing lesson, sea kayak trip or arrange a dive at Julians’s Rock and see the legendary leopard sharks, mantra rays and wobbygongs. Overnight: Byron Bay

• Hike and follow hundreds of kilometres of bushwalking trails in ancient Indigenous landscapes in any of the 5 National Parks and the many Reserves which collectively form the World Heritage listed Gondwana Rainforest of Australia. • Drive out through the Currumbin Valley just 15 mins from the coast to yet another forest world. Lush, tree-lined roads follow the winding path of the Currumbin Creek all the way to its source at the base of the Lamington National Park. Overnight: Tweed Coolangatta

Day 7: depart for home or onward destinations from Gold Coast or Brisbane Airport (1hour from Coolangatta) Enjoy an exhilarating ocean dip and breakfast before you head off. Kirra and Coolangatta have some tasty picks – like Kirramisu and Bellakai. Tugun’s Café Loren has set the bar high for local eateries. Each village has its own take on café culture but the relaxed atmosphere is shared across the board.

Day 1: Sydney to Central Coast

Cross the Sydney Harbour Bridge and leave the city via Sydney’s leafy northern suburbs to the Central Coast, renowned as a weekend playground for Sydney families with great beaches, wildlife and wilderness. Start with a short drive today and keep the kids happy with adventure and wildlife experiences:

With 17 beautiful beaches to choose from, Port Macquarie is one of Australia’s most popular beach holiday destinations. Located on the picturesque Hastings River, the whole family will enjoy these must do activities.

• Ride a horse or a quadbike, go abseiling or kayaking at Glenworth Valley Outdoor Adventures. • View Australia’s largest collection of reptiles and spiders at the Australian Reptile Park.

• Visit the world’s only Koala Hospital, which rescues cares for and releases around 300 koalas a year who have become sick or injured. • Pick fresh strawberries straight from the vine at Ricardoes Tomatoes and Strawberries, relax and sample the produce in Café Red or take a farm tour.

Day 2: Central Coast to Port Stephens (2hrs/125km) Port Stephens is legendary for its pristine nature, vast natural harbour and abundance of aquatic marine life and land activities. Must do activities this afternoon and tomorrow include: • Take a dolphin or whale watching cruise from Nelson Bay (whales during May to November). • 4WD Tours and sandboarding adventures on the Worimi Conservation lands, a 32 km stretch of coastal desert dunes. Day 4: Port Macquarie to Coffs Harbour (2hrs /162km) Leaving Port Macquarie after lunch, today is another easy drive of just 2 hours to Coffs Harbour, stunningly located between mountain escarpments and the Pacific Ocean. There’s a wide range of quality accommodation to suit families of all ages and a huge choice of must do adventure activities, including: • Get up close and personal with dolphins, penguin and seals at Dolphin Marine Magic. • Take a Time Out Adventure: from Segway tours to laser clay shooting to a giant inflatable obstacle course.


Day 5: Coffs Harbour to Byron Bay (3hrs /243km) After a leisurely breakfast, continue north to one of Australia’s most iconic and enduring holiday destinations and Australia’s most easterly point, Byron Bay. Keep an eye out for the striking silhouette of Wollumbin-Mt Warning, known as the ‘cloud catcher’ mountain to indigenous people and part of the vast ancient volcanic caldera that forms part of Australia’s Green Cauldron, a hotbed of ecological and cultural diversity. Not to miss activities in the Tweed Coolangatta region: • Catch a Crab tours on the Tweed River are educational and great fun. • Discover more than 500 weird, exotic and delicious fruit varieties at Tropical Fruit World. Day 1 The morning • Start your day at the Australian Reptile Park getting up close and personal with a range of Australia’s cute and cuddly animals including koalas, wombats, endangered Tasmanian Devils but don’t miss the reptile show. • Explore Australia’s largest car museum, Gosford Classic Car Museum, flaunting over 400 vehicles. The collection contains a number of rare vehicles, most in their original condition.

For lunch • Pick from a seasonal selection of modern Australian cuisine at Indigos, Treats & Bar, Mingara Recreation Club. Indigos’ offers a great value menu along with an impressive selection of wine and boutique beers.

The afternoon - Choose your Adventure • Enjoy the stunning views, or a tour, of the legendary Norah Head Lighthouse, the last manned lighthouse built in NSW. • Head to the Ourimbah State Forest and choose your adventure : TreeTop Crazy Rider - the world’s longest and wildest rollercoaster zipline, or complete the five high ropes adventure course - including multiple flying foxes, rope bridges and other challenges high up in the trees. • Discover one of six National Parks or three State Forests on the Central Coast.
