FOCUS PROFILE

A Children’s Cause

Jamara Ghalayini makes it her business to help children. Literally. She founded the childrens clothes shop Pumpkinheads, as a means to fund the many causes she supports. Why a childrens clothes store? I became painfully aware that even in perceived affluent areas there are third world conditions. With Pumpkinheads I could create a continuous revenue stream for local children’s charities which would exceed the contributions I could make individually. And clothing – because even in economic downturns children continue to be born and grow…and that results in new clothes! Additionally, there is a synergy due to the fact that we are a child focused industry. It allows us to operate as a profitable business with the added benefit of making a difference to the people we serve and the charities we partner with. What labels do you carry? A lot of hard to find European brands like IKKS, Lili Gaufrette, and Mayoral. Also the uber cool Dutch brand Scotch Shrunk. We focus at least 30% of our inventory on ‘Made in the USA’ brands, and our biggest seller is the celeb favorite Daily Threads. Why Brentwood? No brainer. Down to earth, loyal people that make us feel as much a part of their lives as they are ours. It is one of the most community centered neighborhoods in the entire LA area. It has the wonderful familiarity of a small town in the midst of the madness of the Westside! Additionally, we have similar taste in fashion. Brentwood is full of savvy, classy consumers that are not overly concerned with trends. How long have you been here and do you support the community? Since September 2005. We support our community in every way possible. From word of mouth about other merchants in the area (we believe that there is room for everyone, and the best way to stay in business is to help others do the same!). We feel very strongly that part of doing business in Brentwood means supporting the families that patronize our store. We readily donate to schools and causes that our customers feel are important and are always looking for new ways to be involved. 8 FOCUS | JUNE/JULY 2013

What charities do you support and what difference have you made? Our current charity partners are: Baby2Baby (www.baby2baby.org) for which we serve as a collection center of gently used and new items for babies and children up to 12. They do pick ups every Friday because our clients are so supportive and giving. We have an entire fitting room closet that collects anything and everything a baby or child in need can use! Children’s Action Network (www.childrensactionnetwork.org) founded by a Brentwood mom, Jennifer Perry. As an adopted child myself I find the work that CAN does to find permanent loving homes for kids of the utmost importance. We yearly donate brand new full wardrobes from our inventory (usually 3-4 outfits, pj’s, underwear and accessories) to children during the holiday time as well as gift outfits for children to wear during their video interviews. The Help Group (www.thehelpgroup.org) also with its roots in Brentwood via founder Barbara Firestone. This group has several campuses which educate children with learning and social challenges. We have donated thousands in clothing to their Silverlining Boutique (a designer reseller shop that they opened Celebrities, flying birds and to provide vocational training to their students as well as raise magic tricks. money for their schools) as wells as organizing donations from our vendors and clients. My partnership with No Limits is one of my longest charity commitments. No Limits (www. kidswithnolimits.org) serves an unmet need in the community by teaching deaf children to confidently speak, achieve, dream, and inspire through its national theatrical program and after-school educational center. Michelle Christie takes children who cannot speak and are not learning due to hearing loss and the inability of the public school system to be able to accommodate their special needs, and opens up a world of possibility. For a No Limits child it is this simple. They come to the center with literally no speaking ability, functioning at a lever FAR below their age and it is as clear as if someone flicks a switch “ON”. Life changes from the first day. I cant tell you how profound the change is. 100% of the students from Michelle’s program have gone on to college. Lastly, but not least, I serve on the committee for the March of Dimes Signature Chef Event (www.marchofdimes.com) that is held October 6. They are largely responsible for the lifesaving measures that are employed to save the lives of premature infants as well as many of the screenings that are done to rule out and catch treatable disease in newborns.

FUN FACTS

Proudest achievement Without a doubt overcoming the challenge of pregnancy and the delivery of my daughter, Ofelia, 3 years ago. Hands down my greatest achievement. The one I am most grateful for as well. Something unusual we don’t know about – We have a large assortment of magic tricks. I am a huge fan of magic! We also carry real gardening tools for kids. Strangest thing that happened in the store – a bird attacked me in the store and I dove under the counter, and wouldn’t come out until the deli owner next door chased it out. Oh, and the ceiling collapsed over the register one day…that was crazy too! Celebrities who shop here Jennifer Garner, Halle Berry, Rachel Zoe, Jill Dempsey, Alessandra Ambrosio, Adam Sandler, Alanis Morrisette, Alyson Hannigan…the list goes on. We are very fortunate in this regard. Favorite place in Brentwood Hmm….Pumpkinheads of course! But…if I have to pick outside of that…ugh…I am just going to say it… SUSIECAKES!!!!

NEW BOOK

Children’s author, Patricia Olson, has a new book published this month, called ‘Tall Jay’. Her last book, ‘Frumpy, The Pumpkin Who Missed Halloween’ garnered a heap of great reviews, and this followup is sure to earn similar praise and gratitude from her loyal, young readers. Pat lives in Brentwood with her husband and three tortoises. The tortoises enjoy a life of luxury in Pat’s back yard, and one day may crawl into one of her stories. To top it all off, this petite lady is an instrument-rated pilot and holds a black belt in Judo. Her writing richly reflects her compassion, her sense of adventure, her knowledge of courage and her deep understanding of what appeals to children. “Tall Jay” by Patricia Olson is the sad tale of a blue jay who cannot fly because his legs grew too long. He runs away, and on his journey he meets an unusual friend who leads him to a place where he becomes a hero! (Ages 4-9). $17.49 Also available as ebook $3.99 amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com

Design Focus on Design

Kids Spaces

by Tom Callaway

Summer is here and for kids it means school’s out, but for the parents of these kids, it means the house is now under attack from grade school play dates, marauding teens hanging out in the yard, the drive way basketball court, or the kid’s bedrooms and game rooms. I, for one, always loved having the kids around, hearing their energy and voices and laughter drift from their rooms. From a design perspective, I find it fun, yet challenging to focus on a kid’s living and playing areas. I’ve designed bedrooms, game rooms, club rooms, arts and crafts rooms, and outdoor playhouses for children, trying to put myself in a kid’s shoes, and thinking about what they would find to be fun, unique, and aesthetically cool, but still harmonious to the home’s environment. Of course bedrooms are an every day, year round experience, so I try to capture each child’s interests and personality in the colors, wall coverings, bed types, and individual uses to make their rooms as personal, useful, and as comfortable as possible. Most bedrooms include a desk/work table for homework etc. and some sort of shelving to display all the accumulated memories, gifts, and awards that our kid’s endlessly collect. But that’s just the starting point for most kid’s bedrooms. The walls themselves can be covered in incredible papers or fabrics, or maps, or posters, from pretty and fanciful, to athletic or punk. Kid’s rooms have become a spot for a child to declare who they are and what they care about. It’s the one place where I take a 6 to 10 year old’s opinion on design into serious consideration.

It’s the one place where I take a 6 to 10 year old’s opinion on design into serious consideration.

Outdoor playhouses seem to have a certain life span, maybe 5 to 10 years at the most. But while they are used, they bring amazing charm and a lot of fun for young girls to play house in a miniature way. In general, boys prefer a playhouse to be more of a climbing and clubhouse adventure, but like adults, it’s becoming more and more blurred, and less stereotypical, what kids of either sex prefer. Since it takes up a prominent spot in most yards, I like to design a playhouse to be architecturally harmonious with the main house. I’ve designed little English country cottages, small barn-like structures, and fanciful tree houses that delighted the kids and their parents alike. Sometimes I think the fantasy of a playhouse is more the nostalgic desire of an adult than a deepseated wish of the child. But it’s always a happy day, when kids and parents alike, first take in the sight of their completed, fantasy playhouse. Arts and crafts rooms are becoming more and more popular, probably replacing the sewing room of yesteryear. But kids, and adults alike, find a designated room for their creative outbursts a great idea for keeping the mess of creativity under wraps in a controlled spot. I often line the walls in painted cork to make a pin up gallery of the entire space for their completed masterpieces as they come off the worktable. I also like to specify hardwood floors or tile for these areas for easy clean up of spills and splashes. As this summer passes, I hope these thoughts and photos spark a kid’s oriented design project in your near future. Have fun!

This is the first major museum retrospective of the Los Angeles-based architect’s work. Archibald Quincy Jones (1913–1979), who was known as Quincy, practiced architecture in Los Angeles from 1937 until his death in 1979. Jones is equally well-known for the glamorous homes he designed for clients like the actor Gary Cooper and the art collectors Frances and Sidney Brody, as he is for his sensitive and modest housing developments built in the 1950s and 1960s.

Ed Ruscha

Ed Ruscha’s art is characterized by graphic simplicity, playful humor, and a keen interest in the vernacular as it applies to both language and architecture. This exhibition explores his photography, including well-known photo-based book projects. He moved to Los Angeles in 1956 and over a span of 50 years, he has produced paintings, photographs, prints, drawings, and films that often reflect on the city’s vernacular architecture, urban landscape, and car culture. Photography has always been central to his artistic practice, notably his extensive documentation of Los Angeles streets, beginning with Sunset Boulevard in 1965 and this contact sheet of PCH shot in 1974 and 1975.

Ernest Cole Photographer

Ernest Cole (1940–90), one of South Africa’s first black photojournalists, passionately pursued his mission to tell the world what it was like to be black under apartheid. With imaginative daring, courage and compassion, he portrayed the lives of black people as they negotiated through apartheid’s racist laws and oppression. Lines of migrant mineworkers waiting to be discharged from labor, a schoolchild studying by candlelight, parks and benches for “Europeans Only,” young men arrested and handcuffed for entering cities without their passes, worshippers in their Sunday best, crowds crammed into claustrophobic commuter trains; these are just some of the scenes that Cole captured between 1958–66. Art Overdrive: LA Constructs the Future Overdrive refers to the extraordinary pace and worldwide impact of L.A.’s impressive growth. The term also alludes to the fact that an engine churning at incredible speed may overheat. In the face of complicated civic, socioeconomic, and environmental challenges, L.A. has continued to recalibrate and foster bold new cycles of architectural exploration. This groundbreaking exhibition provides an engaging view of the region’s diverse urban landscape, including its ambitious freeway network, sleek corporate towers, whimsical coffee shops, popular shopping malls, refined steel-and-glass residences, and eclectic cultural institutions. Drawings, photographs, models, films, animations, oral histories, and ephemera illustrate the complex dimensions of L.A.’s rich and often underappreciated built environment, revealing this metropolis’s global impact. THEATER TILL 11 AUGUST

Ionescopade

Taken from the plays, playlets and poetry of “Theatre of the Absurd” playwright Eugène Ionesco, Ionescopade is a zany musical vaudeville featuring mime, farce and parody – all hilariously balanced on the edge of madness. Conceiver/original director Robert Allan Ackerman and composer/lyricist Mildred Kayden were Ionesco’s guests in his Paris apartment while creating the work. Kayden, now 90, remained friends with Ionesco until his death in 1994. “He was always very loving and warm,” she says. “He always insisted that life is funny. We need to look at life and find the humor in it, or we can’t take it.” “Ionescopade is a vaudeville, so it’s episodic, fast moving, a little naughty and very, very funny,” explains the director, Bill Castellino. “Ionesco wrote during and after WWII in France, and his plays are impacted by the Nazi occupation, repression, informants, paranoia and liberation. Now, in a post-911 world, these topics resonate afresh, and that’s fascinating to me. Humanity uses laughter to survive oppression. Ionescopade shines light on this very human resilience.” Tickets: $30 Odyssey Theater 2055 South Sepulveda Blvd. CA 90025 T: 310-477-2055 More info: www.odysseytheatre.com

Most never saw their parents again. “Kindertransport” celebrates the heroic strength of the human spirit to keep hope alive through children. (Also featuring: Shannon Lee Clair and Angela Paton)

Sing Karaoke

The nearest place we could find to try your hand at karaoke, is The Gaslite on 21st and Wilshire Blvd. It’s frequented by the twentysomething crowd, and Elle Magazine, The Los Angeles Times and Fox 11 News all give the place a thumbs up. By all accounts, The Gaslite is a little rough and ready but you can sing, (and hear), songs from bands like The Killers and Oasis, as well as the classics. A couple of years ago the singer Jewel sang there in disguise and you can still see the clip on Youtube. The Gaslite is open until 2 am nightly. www.thegaslite.com

Graduation 2013 4 Inspiring Commencement Speeches edited from a compilation by Camille Squires, Sophomore at Georgetown University

Randy Pausch - Carnegie Mellon University, 2008

“We don’t beat the reaper by living longer. We beat the reaper by living well and living fully. For the reaper is always going to come for all of us. The question is: What do we do between the time we are born, and the time he shows up? Because when he shows up, it’s too late to do all the things that you’re always gonna, kinda get around to.” Randy Pausch gave this poignant talk to the graduating class of 2008, after being diagnosed with cancer nine months earlier. Pausch’s message is simple and short: Live life purposefully, pursing your dreams and finding your passion in people. http://youtu.be/RcYv5x6gZTA

2) J.K. Rowling - Harvard University, 2008

“Failure gave me an inner security that I had never attained by passing examinations. Failure taught me things about myself that I could have learned no other way. I discovered that I had a strong will, and more discipline than I had suspected; I also found out that I had friends whose value was truly above the price of rubies. The knowledge that you have emerged wiser and stronger from setbacks means that you are, ever after, secure in your ability to survive.” A group of students who had grown reading with J.K. Rowling’s novels came full circle by listening to her as a commencement speaker. In her witty and relatable speech, Rowling recounts for her audience two important lessons life had taught her since her college graduation: the importance of failure, and the importance of imagination. http://youtu.be/wHGqp8lz36c

3) Oprah Winfrey - Spelman College, 2005

“And what do I want? I don’t want to just be successful in the world. I don’t want to just make a mark, or have a legacy. The answer to that question for me is; I want to fulfill the highest, trues expression of myself as a human being.” No list of commencement speeches would be complete without an entry from Oprah Winfrey. She has given out sage advice at numerous graduations, and this one is no exception. For the women of the Spelman class of 2005, Oprah had three messages: Find who you are, look for ways to serve, and always do the right thing. http://youtu.be/Bpx8uNzRdew

4) Bono - University of Pennsylvania, 2004

“So my question I suppose is: What’s the big idea? What’s your big idea? What are you willing to spend your moral capital, your intellectual capital, your cash, your sweat equity in pursuing outside of the walls of the University of Pennsylvania?” Bringing the charisma that only he can, Bono challenged students to find their own cause to be passionate about. The problems in this world abound, he cautions. But change is possible. It may come about slowly, but change is only brought about by passionate people; people willing to fight for what they believe in. http://youtu.be/erLem1Zijmo

20 FOCUS | JUNE/JULY 2013

Health & Science Los Angeles – Not Fit

Los Angeles is the 29th fittest city in the country, according to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Fitness Index. Although we don’t smoke as much as other places we don’t use public transportation, and we are more mentally unstable and have higher rates of diabetes. Some of the ways in which fitness was measured—in addition to smoking and diabetes—was the number of dog parks, farmer’s markets and recreation areas per capita, as well as rates of obesity. Do We Literally Get Cold Feet When We Are Anxious?

We use the term ‘cold feet’ when we decide that we cannot go through with a major decision. There’s stress, panic and often anxiety but do our feet literally get colder? Recent studies came to the conclusion that they do indeed get cooler. When people are stressed, their brain releases stress hormones to specific cells in the body. When the brain signals these receptors and shifts the proteins, the structure of the cells changes. The body reacts to this potential attack by then transporting blood from the extremities, like hands and feet, to vital organs like the brain, lungs and heart. Our heart beats faster and our circulating blood is redistributed to those parts of the body which acutely need it most such as the heart and skeletal muscle. This is at the expense of other body parts such as gut and skin, which are less critical to the acute stress reactions of flight, fight and fright. The decrease in internal temperature in the hands and feet shifts the blood distribution and makes the skin cool and clammy. So those cold feet that you feel before an impending decision are just your body’s natural way of protecting you from possible harm. The studies don’t say whether you make more grounded decisions if you put a pair of socks on.

Your Stroke Risk Can Drop With 7 Lifestyle Changes

A new study found that seven lifestyle changes could greatly reduce your risk of having a stroke. 23,000 Americans aged 45 and older were assessed using the American Heart Association’s Life’s Simple 7 health factors: be active, control cholesterol, eat a healthy diet, manage blood pressure, maintain a healthy weight, control blood sugar and don’t smoke. Over five years, 432 strokes occurred among the participants. All seven factors played an important role in predicting stroke risk, but blood pressure was the most important, according to the study, which was published June 6 in the journal Stroke. “Compared to those with poor blood pressure status, those who were ideal had a 60 percent lower risk of future stroke,” Dr. Mary Cushman, a professor of medicine at the University of Vermont in Burlington, said in a journal news release. Cushman and her colleagues also found that people who didn’t smoke or quit smoking more than a year before the start of the study had a 40 percent lower stroke risk. Each year, about 795,000 people in the United States have a stroke, which is the No. 4 killer and a leading cause of long-term disability in the country, according to the American Heart Association.

Alzheimer’s Drugs May Have Heart Benefits

A new study found that drugs commonly used to treat Alzheimer’s disease may also prevent heart attacks and premature death. Swedish researchers reviewed records on 7,073 Alzheimer’s patients taking cholinesterase inhibitors (Aricept, Exelon, Reminyl and other brands). Over an average of about 17 months of follow-up, 831 of the patients had a heart attack or died. The researchers found that taking cholinesterase inhibitors reduced both the death rate and the heart attack rate by about 35 percent. The risk decreased further with increasing doses of the medicines. The study appeared in The European Heart Journal. The authors emphasize that only a clinical trial could prove a causal relationship, but they suggest several possible reasons for the effect, including the anti-inflammatory properties of cholinesterase inhibitors. “It’s very interesting that these drugs have such potentially beneficial effects,” said the lead author, Dr. Peter Nordstrom, a professor of geriatrics at Umea University. “But I would not tell people to take these drugs to prevent heart attack. This is only an association, and we cannot recommend them to prevent cardiovascular disease.”

Los Angeles: Top 3 Vegan Friendly City

Home to PETA’s Bob Barker Building, Los Angeles comes third on PETA’s 2013 list of veganfriendly cities. With neighborhood vegan restaurants like Native Foods Café in Westwood, Veggie Grill on Wilshire Blvd and Real Food Daily in Santa Monica, there’s plenty of choice for Westsiders. Ironically, Austin, Texas, in the heart of cattle country, is voted the friendliest vegan city.

Soy Sauce Overdose Sends Teen Into Coma

A 19-year-old survived a dangerous sodium overdose after drinking more than a quart of soy sauce on a dare. He slipped into coma with seizure-like activity and was rushed to the hospital. Doctors determined he was suffering from hyponatremia, a condition in which there is a salt imbalance in the bodily fluids. He had effectively overdosed on sodium. Severe hyponatremia causes excess water to flow into cells to balance sodium levels. In brain cells the excess swelling can lead to neurological damage or death. Other symptoms include mental confusion, convulsions, fatigue, and nausea. The doctors were able to stabilize the patient by flushing the salt from his system with a water-and-sugar-based solution, even though he remained in a coma. After three days he woke up from the coma without suffering any lasting neurological damage. Death from sodium although rare, is not unheard of. In ancient China, salt overdoses were a traditional way to commit suicide.

Sarah Jessica Parker has a new fashion business venture. The actress famous for her role as Carrie Bradshaw in ‘Sex and the City’ together with George Malkemus, the CEO of Manolo Blahnik, will design shoes, bags and coats at a ‘reasonable’ price. “In a silly way, I think it’s what people have expected of me most because of Carrie Bradshaw,” she told Vogue. “Because I got to play that role, I wore a lot of shoes and by default I learned an enormous amount. We’re putting new colors together that people don’t typically do, just beautiful combinations that you wish existed in your closet,” she explains. “And in terms of bags, thinking about that period of the seventies into the eighties, what those women were carrying – taking away the bells and the whistles and hardware and really making it about the bag.” The shoes will be a variety of pumps and flats with prices that range from $200 to $300 and bags under $700. The SJP line will be available at Nordstrom next year.
