“We love to create spaces with an emotional impact that celebrate family life and the beauty in the imperfect.”

Hillary is the inspiration and original founder of Hillary Thomas Designs. Ten years ago, she “officially” took the plunge (but she’s been decorating her entire life!) and launched a traditional interior design business in Santa Monica, CA. The business has evolved from a successful interior design firm into a vibrant product and lifestyle company. Hillary believes that good design is not something off-the- shelf or necessarily one particular style. Rather, it’s an eclectic mix of the high and the low, where inexpensive flea market finds and fine antiques can effortlessly coexist. Originally from Locust Valley, Long Island, Hillary brings her passion for design and her open spirit to all her projects. Her goal is to bring out the inner-creative in even her most left-brained clients and friends. Rooted in her belief that life is multicultural, multilayered, and inspiring, Hillary loves nothing more than harmonizing different lifestyles, tastes, and beloved objects into a thoughtfully designed and highly individualized living space. Dana’s strong work ethic, resourcefulness and personable nature, combined with her inspired vision produces outstanding results. Knowing that the client must live with the finished product, Dana is sensitive not to force her own style. A. Quincy Jones BUILDING FOR BETTER LIVING

This is the first major museum retrospective of the Los Angeles-based architect’s work. Archibald Quincy Jones (1913–1979), who was known as Quincy, practiced architecture in Los Angeles from 1937 until his death in 1979. A quiet modernist and dedicated architecture professor at the University of Southern California, Jones worked to bring a high standard of design to the growing middle class by reconsidering and refining postwar housing and emphasizing cost-effective, innovative, and sustainable building methods. In addition, Jones is among the first architects of this period to view developments as an opportunity to build community through shared green spaces, varied home models, and non-grid site planning. Jones is credited with over 5,000 built projects, most of which still exist today, as the clients and homeowners shared

JONES’S PRACTICE Jones is equally well-known for the glamorous homes he designed for clients like the actor Gary Cooper and the art collectors Frances and Sidney Brody, as he is for his sensitive and modest housing developments built in the 1950s and 1960s. From 1946 to 1950 Jones worked with a collaborative team of other architects, engineers, and landscape architects to design the Mutual Housing Association of Crestwood Hills, a unique housing cooperative of more than 160 homes in Los Angeles’s Santa Monica Mountains. Additionally, with his professional partner Frederick E. Emmons, Jones designed many Eichler Homes developments in California around San Francisco and Los Angeles. Easy-going and ambitious, Jones worked closely and often with other designers, including architects Paul R. Williams, Frederick Emmons, Whitney Smith, and Edgardo Contini; landscape architects Garrett Eckbo and Thomas Church; developer Joseph Eichler; and interior designer William Haines, among others, throughout his career. In addition to residential architecture, A. Quincy Jones also designed churches, restaurants, libraries, university buildings, schools, and commercial buildings. Jones prioritized the spatial experience Jones’s compassion for ‘better of each building’s interior space, used lightweight living.’ Known by architects for structural systems, and had an interest in ‘greenbelt designing from the inside out, planning,’ making him a premier architect for the Jones’s homes and buildings are residential developments and corporate campuses celebrated for expansive interior that flourished during the post-war period. Ernest Cole Photographer

Ernest Cole (1940–90), one of South Africa’s first black photojournalists, passionately pursued his mission to tell the world what it was like to be black under apartheid. With imaginative daring, courage and compassion, he portrayed the lives of black people as they negotiated through apartheid’s racist laws and oppression. Lines of migrant mineworkers waiting to be discharged from labor, a schoolchild studying by candlelight, parks and benches for “Europeans Only,” young men arrested and handcuffed for entering cities without their passes, worshippers in their Sunday best, crowds crammed into claustrophobic commuter trains; these are just some of the scenes that Cole captured between 1958–66.

Ed Ruscha’s art is characterized by graphic simplicity, playful humor, and a keen interest in the vernacular as it applies to both language and architecture. This exhibition explores his photography, including well-known photo-based book projects. He moved to Los Angeles in 1956 and over a span of 50 years, he has produced paintings, photographs, prints, drawings, and films that often reflect on the city’s vernacular architecture, urban landscape, and car culture. Photography has always been central to his artistic practice, notably his extensive documentation of Los Angeles streets, beginning with Sunset Boulevard in 1965. Several of the photographs that appeared in these publications became source material for works of art that he would realize in other media, either at the same time or years later—for example, the photograph of Standard Station, Amarillo, Texas, published in Twentysix Gasoline Stations and later abstracted in a well-known painting now in the Hood Museum of Art, Dartmouth College.

Robert Davi

8pm with opening comedian Mike Marino Robert Davi is an award-winning actor, screenwriter, director, producer, and what many are finding out, an extraordinary jazz vocalist, as stated by many, including Quincy Jones: “As FS would say, ‘Koo, Koo.’ Wow! I have never heard anyone come this close to Sinatra’s sound – and still be himself. Many try, but Robert Davi has the voice, tone, the flavor and the swagger. What a surprise.” From his portrayal of James Bond villain Franz Sanchez in “Licence to Kill” to FBI profiler Bailey Malone in “Profiler,” Robert Davi is one of the film industry’s most recognized tough guys, whether on the big screen or on television. Interview Magazine has called him “a latterday Humphrey Bogart” and GQ Magazine has compared him to silver screen classics Robert Mitchum and Lee Marvin. His tough exterior masks a powerful inner sensitivity, which he calls upon for his most notorious roles providing complexity to characters even where, initially, it was not present. This entertainer always gives passion and heart to all he does. One has to only listen to his debut music album, Davi Sings Sinatra: On the Road to Romance (Fontana/ Universal Music Group), to experience it. Davi has always loved to sing and entertain. At 15, he received acclaim for his voice, having been awarded First Place in the prestigious New York State School Music Association Solo Competition. As a young adult, he studied under several top vocal teachers including the legendary Tito Gobbi, Dan Ferro of Juilliard, Samuel Margolis (who taught Robert Merrill) and most recently, renowned vocal coach Gary Catona. When a government inspector arrives, chaos, underpants and crossdressing lead the charge. This classic British farce will be sure to have you rolling in the aisles. 8pm. Tickets: $20. $1,800,000 4 Beds | 2.75 Baths In the January 1955 issue of Popular Mechanics Magazine West Coast Editor Thomas Stimson introduced his newly built steel frame and lightweight concrete panel “House of the Future” to his readers with an open invitation to experience the house through March 1 of that year. In a clear response to John Entenza’s Case Study Program, the residence celebrated post-war industrial technology, pre-fabricated wall modules, and was fitted with new conveniences such as an automatic aluminum garage door. The article prophetically declared: “About the only addition it may require in the next 50 years or so would be a solar battery to provide all light, heat and power” mounted on the roof! Designed by Adrian Wilson and proclaimed a masterpiece of construction at the time, the success of the Eugene Memler building system is evidenced with the construction, and program for the house appearing today as solid and practical as when it was built. Not wishing to relegate this unique experiment in living to the past, the current owners have carefully updated the kitchen, baths and surfaces in keeping with modern aesthetics. The original floor plan incorporates a bright and airy living room/dining area opening to a lanai, 4 bedrooms, 2.75 baths, and an attached two car garage. Size: 2,362 sq ft.
