Take A Hike
WESTRIDGE TRAILHEAD
Drive up Mandeville Canyon and take the first left at Westridge Road. Follow the road as it winds around the hillside for about 2 miles until it dead ends, and you’ve reached Westridge Trailhead and San Vicente Mountain. As you walk past the barrier and start your hike uphill on the single track, you’ll pass a handful of breathy cyclists and people walking their dogs. It’s just a ten minute walk and the views are breathtaking. From 1956-1968, San Vicente Mountain was one of sixteen Los Angeles area anti-aircraft missile launch sites. Yes, you read that right. This site contained ground-based radar and computer systems designed to detect and track hostile aircraft, and to guide the antiaircraft missiles that would be launched from nearby Sepulveda Basin. These days you can gain access to the original radar tower for spectacular views of the Encino Reservoir, San Fernando Valley and the Los Angeles Basin. It’s also a great place to watch the sun set, have a picnic or meditate on the follies of war. 6 FOCUS | APRIL 2013

WESTWOOD VILLAGE MEMORIAL PARK
In the tiny cemetery, hidden between two office buildings on the south side of Wilshire Boulevard, stars like Marilyn Monroe, Dean Martin, Natalie Wood, Roy Orbison, Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau, Peter Falk, Farrah Fawcett and Burt Lancaster, lie buried in discreet surroundings. Surprisingly, some graves are unmarked. For instance, Frank Zappa lies underneath a patch of grass that bears no marker and you have to know where to find it – see our website for clues. It’s a poignant place, ideal for contemplation and for looking at inscriptions from the 1900s, weathering gracefully in the lush grass. Ironically, the cemetery backs onto the local preschool and the happy sound of children’s voices adds a strangely uplifting experience of death and renewal. Navigate your way around the buried markers, along with the strange assortment of mourners and tourists, to spot names you recognize. Billy Wilder’s inscription, by the way, only makes sense if you’ve seen the movie ‘Some Like It Hot’.

MILDRED MATHIAS BOTANICAL GARDEN
A great place for a contemplative stroll. It is described as a living museum and used as an educational aid for teaching undergraduates at UCLA. Wander along the quiet, winding paths to look at specimens from Australia, Hawaii and China. Terrapins’ heads stick out of a murky pond next to a bamboo grove, which seems to be the focal point. Each plant is labeled diligently, gently causing you to reconsider the ones which look like weeds. Visit: 8am-5pm. 100 Stein Plaza Driveway, Los Angeles, California 90095. Llyn Foulkes Crank or Hero
One of the most influential yet under recognized artists of his generation, Foulkes makes work that stands out for its raw, immediate, and unfiltered qualities. His extraordinarily diverse body of work – including impeccably painted landscapes, mixed-media constructions, deeply disturbing portraits, and narrative tableaux – resists categorization Christopher Knight, LA Times. and defies expectations, distinguishing Foulkes as a truly singular artist. Featuring approximately 150 artworks from public and private collections in the U.S. and Europe, some of which have not been seen for decades. The exhibition explores the entire scope of the artist’s career, including early cartoons and drawings, his macabre, emotionally-charged paintings of the early 1960s; his epic rock and postcard paintings of the late 1960s and early 1970s; his “bloody head” series of mutilated figures from the late 1970s through the present; his social commentary paintings targeting corporate America (especially Disney), which include his remarkable narrative tableaux that combine painting with woodworking, found materials, and thick mounds of modeling paste, seamlessly blended into the painted surface to create a remarkable illusion of depth. Spomenik: Photographs of the Monuments of Former Yugoslavia by Jan Kempenaers
Futuristic-looking, spomeniks, (Serbo-Croatian for monuments), dot the countryside of the former Yugoslavia like abandoned spaceships. From 2006–09, Antwerp-based artist Jan Kempenaers travelled through the region photographing these monuments. Erected by Josip Broz Tito in the 1960s and 1970s to commemorate World War II, the spomeniks were once the sites of state-orchestrated pilgrimages for adults and schoolchildren. After the breakup of the former Yugoslavia in the early 1990s, many of the monuments were destroyed. Today, those that remain have fallen into disrepair and lie deserted and disused, subject to the indifference of a new generation.
Overdrive: L.A. Constructs the Future
During the period 1940 to 1990, Los Angeles rapidly evolved into one of the most populous and influential industrial, economic, and creative capitals in the world. This dynamic exhibition provides an engaging view of the region’s diverse urban landscape, including its ambitious freeway network, sleek corporate towers, whimsical coffee shops, popular shopping malls, refined steel-and-glass residences, and eclectic cultural institutions. Drawings, photographs, models, films, animations, oral histories, and ephemera illustrate the complex dimensions of L.A.’s rich and often underappreciated built environment, revealing this metropolis’s global impact as a vibrant laboratory for cutting-edge design.

One of Pulitzer Prize winner David Mamet’s defining works, American Buffalo was instantly hailed as a new American classic when it opened on Broadway in 1977. Now, Geffen Playhouse Artistic Director Randall Arney takes a fresh look at these misguided misfits who are a little out of luck and way out of their league as they plot the theft of a rare coin collection. As the time of the heist approaches, tension and anticipation build revealing loyalties and testing friendships. Negotiating explosive humor, frenetic energy and surprising tenderness, this play, which has not had a major Los Angeles production in more than a decade, promises a mesmerizing night whether seeing it for the first time or rediscovering this groundbreaking work. Tickets $37-$57 for preview performances and from $47-$77 for the regular run. Geffen Playhouse 10886 Le Conte Avenue, Los Angeles, California 90024 T: 310-208-5454 More info: geffenplayhouse.com

Say the Word: The New Me
Celebrate spring with host Beth Lapides and check out fresh, original storytelling about renewal and other seasonal matters. F. Scott Fitzgerald famously said, “There are no second acts in American lives.” That might have been true in the 1920s, but in our post–Mayan Calendar, Facebook-posting world, everyone gets a second, third, or even fourth act—sometimes all in one day!
SATURDAY 4 MAY
Brad Mehldau Trio and The Bad Plus
For the past 12 years The Bad Plus – bassist Reid Anderson, pianist Ethan Iverson, and drummer David King – have created an uncompromising body of work by shattering musical convention. Rolling Stone called their amalgam of jazz, pop, rock and avant-garde “about as badass as highbrow gets,” while The New York Times said the band is “better than anyone at mixing the sensibilities of post-’60s jazz and indie rock.” Few groups have amassed such acclaim, and few have generated as much controversy while audaciously bucking trends. Joining the trio is brilliant composer and inimitable saxman Joshua Redman. Redman is the one of the most acclaimed and charismatic jazz artists to have emerged in the ‘90s and has established himself as one of its most consistent and successful bandleaders. When Joshua joins The Bad Plus as a special guest, his additional melodic prowess pushes boundaries even further in this very special engagement. Kick It
Coast Sports is a long-standing organisation with an innate understanding of how kids play. Mainly soccer and baseball for 2-5 year olds with a lot of emphasis on fun. The coaches are enthusiastic and the classes are geared to learning by appealing to the kids’ imaginations. Classes at Barrington Park and Brentwood Magnet School, mostly in 8 week segments. Register online or contact them directly. Coast Sports 463 24th Street Santa Monica, CA 90402. T: 310-913-3224. coastsports.com. A class at Super Soccerstars ends with an annoyingly catchy song you’ll find yourself singing long after the game. Youngsters are coached in skills like dribbling and turning with the ball, through fun tasks. Non competitive and a good kid to coach ratio. Soccer classes for kids 12 months to 8 years at Barrington Rec. Center and Rustic Canyon Rec. Center start this weekend and run till 22 June. Costs $275.
