Hollywood’s Queen of the Jumpsuit and her affordable ready to wear line you need to know BY MELISSA MEYERS

I

discovered fashion designer Ripley Rader a few years ago after noticing a blogger wearing one of her gorgeous jumpsuits at a fashion event in LA. I have watched Ripley grow since then and she has expanded her jumpsuit line to include a fabulous ready-to-wear line, all designed and made in Los Angeles! Most of her jumpsuits retail for $200 and her other pieces are well priced too. She’s a favorite in Hollywood with celebrity fans including Gigi Hadid, Amy Schumer, Kate Upton and Felicity Huffman. It’s no surprise that LA’s famed Fred Segal coined Ripley “THE Jumpsuit Designer!”

Ripley Rader’s ready-to-wear collections are classic, feminine, practical and are meant to express individuality through different silhouettes that accentuate all body types. Her clothing is incredibly comfortable, wrinkle free and perfect for travel!

6 FOCUS | A U G U S T 2 0 1 7

From Ripley’s Ready to Wear collection, I am obsessed with the crop top and high waisted pants. I recently wore this outfit below to a Ceder’s Sinai luncheon in Beverly Hills – a trendy and fresh alternative to wearing a dress! Vertical circle necklace on wire is by EncircleNYC.

For a more casual vibe, I love Ripley’s Feather Print Jumpsuit. It’s super chic and comfy--the perfect piece to pack for beach vacation travel. I like to wear this jumpsuit super long so it just about drags on the floor when paired with flats.

Many of Ripley’s designs easily transition from day to night. Wear them with a wedge and oversized bag during the day, and add a pair of sexy heels, smokey eye and statement jewelry for a night out on the town. Her styles come in a variety of solids and prints. Whatever your style or body type, she has you covered!

About Ripley Rader A Southern girl who calls Southern California home, Ripley has an eye for fashion and style and a penchant for sequins. She launched her brand in 2013 and is also passionate about entrepreneurship and encourages young women to follow their dreams. She teaches design classes to highrisk girl teens and leads mentorship workshops in character education for girls. She is the co-founder of Red Tent Entertainment, a Los Angeles based production company that provides a unique home for femaledriven content. ripleyraderstyle.com

Tanya Memme “The ODEEVA DEEVA” BY SUZAN BRITTAN

S

hhhhh! Don’t let the cat out of the...box? A mystery box, that is. Yes, it’s a secret, until ya get it. Well, it’s no secret how TANYA MEMME became so successful as a ‘host-ess with the most-est’, DIY expert, Mom-trepeneur, inventor, mentor, Emmy nominated, businesswoman! I could go on and on about her, but that’s what her website is for – to read more... www.tanyamemme.com. Because she is so multifaceted, she is the perfect representative to launch this online biz endeavor and let’s face it... she has one beautiful face. Ms. Memme is the Vice President of a new highly original venture is called, ODEEVA.

Like every smart businessperson should, you surround yourself with others who know better and do better in areas that are not your strong suit. We start with, DAVID HARRIS, the creator of ODEEVA. He grew up in London; and began a long and successful career, as the founder and Managing Director of Private Stock and Four Season; fashion companies, based out of London. In 2001, David co-founded eBridge, a monthly subscription business assisting SBO’s to be “seen and found” on-line; this grew into a $40 million business, employing 1,000 people. Harris was an investor and director of eVisibilty, an online agency specializing in SEO & SEM. eVisibilty became a Fortune 500 company and was acquired in 2010 by a multinational digital agency roll-up. Harris noticed the online subscription business booming and wanted a part of it and quick. He also saw a niche being missed. David knew exactly who to call next; his long time friend Tanya Memme out of the blue with; “Hello to the perfect woman.” Hey, any man that would say that to me garners instant

attention. It worked. Harris wanted Tanya to not only be the face of ODEEVA, but also his champion VP. He planted budding business seeds about a ‘box’ filled with women’s whatnots tailor made for her. His business model and philosophy fit her life’s dream narrative perfectly. When you open their website it states, “...We deliver women’s essentials right to their door every month with a special twist! Odeeva is not just a monthly subscription box for women... it’s a lifestyle.” This means, you’ll never have to run out in your PJ’s and flip-flops at 2am to the market, 7-11 or drug store again to pick up an emergency box of tampons or package of pads. ODEEVA isn’t only for ‘that time of the month’ either; there are other fun and essential goodies you can choose from to ‘up-fill’ your ODEEVA box. And - It ships for FREE! Tanya is also a journalist, contributor and TV host for FocusTV, which has just partnered with ODEEVA for the OdeevaTV show, an online candid series hosted by Memme. On this “Talk-show-esque” platform you’ll see a parade of celebs, renowned doctors and inventors seated on that comfy couch, ready to take on honest hot topics. The show’s main fem-driven subjects span from educational to uncomfortable to fabulously taboo. You can ask anything you want, it’s an open forum. You’ll see her show on Facebook Live and Instagram. There’s even an Odeeva Pod Cast and Blog too. www.odeeva.com - Yes, you will be “Odeeva’d” everywhere possible! It’s a famous brand’s branding integration dream! Tanya produced ODEEVA’s first commercial to be set free in June directed and edited by the talented and detailed Michael Kontomanolis (whom she’s worked with on Hallmark’s, “Home & Family”) and Assistant Director, Justin Ruiz, a camera and editing Millennial wiz kid. I asked David Harris where the original name ODEEVA came from. He explained, “ODE to EVA, which in essence means: giving praise to life. Take it or leave it... still it’s meaningful with or without my definition.” Let’s get into what’s in ODEEVA’s box. Firstly, it is being marketed and branded as focusmag.us 11

an edgy ‘mystery box’ filled with scrummies like chocolates, face products, razors, lubes, female hygiene products, condoms, eye masks, sexy time toys...you get the idea. It’s not mussed up with off brand items or generic products. It’s stuff ya already use and want. It’s up to the brand ambassador’s at ODEEVA to fulfill your subscription description needs according to your answered questions on the site’s survey. The beautifully designed and crafted box has a main purpose – to make your dang period easier to deal with! Listed are personality categories to choose from to get yours right. ODEEVA isn’t like those other “what’s in the box” subscriptions; you choose what you want specifically without a styling or shipping fee. What’s a lady driven product without a lady driven charity component? ODEEVA is absolutely inspired by women to give to women of all ages and doing so through domestic and global charities they are featuring monthly. Menstrual health and hygiene seem to be taken for granted in our world until you see inside the female homeless population. The depletion of supplies and education is devastating. For more than 40 million disenfranchised or impoverished women in the US the cost of feminine hygiene products is a massive burden. You can help raise awareness and selfie yourself at #odeevacares. (There’s a “Donate” button on ODEEVA’s site linked to women’s rotating charities.)

Terry Briggs

A Man for All Women, an Empowerist-O-Mister Female Empowerment BY SUZAN BRITTAN

When you think of female empowerment the first thing that comes to mind is women advocating for other women while marching for equal rights along side other amazing women wearing pink hats and waving DIY signs proclaiming their undeniable abilities. Think again... because you haven’t met TERRY BRIGGS, our first Focus Magazine male “Empowerista” mister who is the founder of, SUCCESS BEYOND BEAUTY. Let me tell ya, or he will – he’s 100% all man with a handsome confident smile ready to share with all men that women are the biz-omb!

up together... we lived in low-income housing... I saw her struggle, fight... seen her go through abusive relationships. I’ve seen my mother have a business when she was in the projects... What mother had a business in the hood? I’ve seen her hustle and grind. She travels the country now and advocates for women who have been sexually and domestically abused.” He’s also the co-editor of her magazine, We Sparkle, a women’s empowerment magazine. Even his wife has an empowerment company. I’m gonna say it... he loves strong women, (and making them even stronger). Success Beyond Beauty is an online community of women locally and globally who want to share their life experience as: mentors, entrepreneurs, philanthropists, creatives and influencers. The Los Angeles based company promotes

“My mother had me when she was 16 so we grew up together... we lived in low-income housing... I saw her struggle, fight... seen her go through abusive relationships. I’ve seen my mother have a business when she was in the projects...” Focus Online’s, Alex Wehrley founder of the Empowerista Series, hosted an on-camera interview with Terry to talk about, Success Beyond Beauty (www.successbeyondbeauty. com). Alex asked what inspired Terry to go on his success journey with women. His answer is heart melting; “My Mama! My mother had me when she was 16 so we grew

events, seminars, monthly networking socials, workshops and life style products. The entire company is designed to help women be better versions of themselves. Briggs had an epiphany; “The Women’s March was a game changer for me. When I volunteered I realized I needed to advocate for women. I (needed to) put my strong voice to work.” His

desire is to make a bigger impact as a man advocating for women. Alex asked him what advice he has for other men who want to start getting involved in women’s advocacy. He answered, “Listen. Listen first. Take time to listen, hear their heart, what are their dreams, goals… start the conversation. Ask her, ‘Do I do a good job at inspiring you?’ Are you empowering the women in your life... or dominating them?” Boom! There it is. Social Media sites can be damaging for women’s self esteem posting only the fabulous-ness of their lives. Terry warns; “...everyone wants to be liked. It’s pressure, even as an adult. Social media isn’t real. We only show the great things - what you see is not what you get all the time. Own your truth!” I doubt you’ll see most of your friends posting how their bills aren’t paid or how a man just dumped them while waiting for the valet to get his car. It is all hype - all fluff manufactured to make other women jealous of one another.

This is where Success Beyond Beauty takes the Social Media wheel giving the power back to women and the support desired. Sign up for their newsletter and join their uplifting Instagram page, www.instagram.com/ successbeyondbeauty. Get involved. Find people who lift you up when you feel like you’re falling - who see the absolute best of you when you see the complete worst of you. See yourself and make others see you in a positive light, and help others how you want to be helped. Are you sensing a theme? Good!

july2017.focustv.us

Briggs is all about the “Boss Lady” movement and wants it known that it’s okay if you’re not the boss yet and it’s not less empowering as a woman if you’re not in the corner office with a view. You’ll get there. If you choose to be there, you will be. Terry’s freshly minted book, Sexy & She Knows It! 21 Attributes of Success Beyond Beauty, is hoping to reshape the way women think about themselves in a constructive and positive way in both their private and business lives via the heartfelt tales of truthful and candid women. Oh and, it’s ready for pre-order. Briggs gives a strong side note; “FYI: I’m an extreme advocate for men teaming up with women to empower women and advocate for gender equality worldwide. I’m a supporter of HeForShe.org (Emma Watson’s gender equality org.), Unwomen.org, and any organization that aligns with our mission and brand.” On another strong side note: Dear Universe, please send the women of Earth more men exactly like Terry Briggs.

Purely pōr~lisse From Power Ranger to Skin Ninja – Jennifer Yen rocks her new skin care line

“Within six months of landing Power Rangers, my skin was wrecked from wearing layers of heavy makeup,” Yen states. “I developed rosacea, psoriasis, adult acne, hives and sensitive skin and my confidence plummeted. I tried everything - all the latest and greatest and nothing worked and this is when I rediscovered my grandmother’s Asian beauty rituals.”

While enjoying success as a Hollywood Actress on the hit TV Show Power Rangers, Yen would spend 15 hours a day in hair and heavy makeup, and then perform combat scenes for hours at a time. As a result, Yen’s skin dramatically suffered. The desire to create a skincare line – as nothing Yen tried on herself, worked – with an emphasis on ingredients that gently heal, soothe and repair the skin without the need for harsh chemicals, is what eclipsed Yen’s desire to remain a Hollywood actress and to pursue pūr~lisse beauty.

pūr~lisse is derived from Asian beauty wisdom, reinvented into modern, multi-tasking, and high performing skincare essentials that are safe for all skin types, even hyper sensitive skin. As a single mom, Yen is passionate about supporting women and education. Yen is in the Visionary Circle of Visionary Women, on the host committee of Rise of the Female Entrepreneur, a mentor to the Spark Student Program and the Cherie Blair Foundation. Yen also gives back to the

nail & bone Polish With A Purpose BY ANA MARKOSYAN

S

ocially conscious nail polish brand, nail & bone, co-founded by high school friends, Steve Wiseman and Missy MacKinnon Bowden, is passionate about pups and dedicated to getting dogs off the streets, out of shelters and into loving homes. The Maryland natives hadn’t seen each other since they were teenagers in Potomac, Maryland and reconnected in Los Angeles. They quickly learned that they shared a desire for social responsibility, and building a business that empowers community, and makes a positive impact. Passionate about social causes, Steve dreamed of having his own product line that could enable consumers to make positive choices, much like TOMs and Newman’s Own. His impressive background includes acquiring commercial real estate, being James Cameron’s trusted advisor on real estate and solar projects, and co-producing a kid’s show airing on Netflix and public television. On a personal note, Steve

has completed triathlons, climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro and most importantly, he’s a hands-on father of 3 kids under age thirteen. Missy was on the same wavelength with her passion for entrepreneurialism, kids, and dogs. She had co-founded and sold a digital music company to a publicly traded online retailer in her 20s and, after years of selling advertising for other founders’ start-ups, she realized she craved more than financial success. She wanted to weave her passions into “doing good” for communities that needed help. As an active mom of an athlete and a performer, she co-founded, Club 42, a non-profit that builds community and diversity through sports, music and dance and provides academic tuition awards for middle through high school kids. The idea for nail & bone, a cruelty free beauty polish line, began via a serendipitous run in with the duo and a US nail polish manufacturer at a local Starbucks. Steve shared, “Harnessing the power of purpose to effectuate positive change is at the heart of nail & bone. We created a line of pretty polishes made in the USA that are salon quality, cruelty and 8 free with a mission of supporting pet rescue and adoption, a cause we care deeply about.”

Steve’s good friend, Eden Sassoon, daughter of hairstyling royalty, Vidal Sassoon, absolutely loves the nail & bone concept. She offered to co-host the nail & bone launch party at her luxurious salon, Eden by Eden Sassoon in West Hollywood on May 21st. “Providing women and girls a socially conscious nail polish line; thereby, giving homeless and sheltered pets a second chance at happiness is very inspiring to be a part of!” said Eden. Her gorgeous blue eyed dog, Gracie, is the inspiration for the name of the turquoise blue polish, which happens to be one of her favorite colors as it symbolizes the throat chakra which represents truth and communication. The TV star believes in giving back and has her own nonprofit, Beauty Gives Back to Thirst. The supporters for the evening include Whole Foods, ONE Hope Wine, Eden by Eden Sassoon, Celebrity Makeup Artist, Kimberley Bosso, Shylee Rose Jewelry, and Ayo Yoga, to name a few. 100% of proceeds from the night will be donated to various charitable organization including Best Friends Animal Society, Animal Hope & Wellness Foundation, and Ace of Hearts. An exciting array of items for the raffle and silent auction for the evening include luxury jewelry pieces, celebrity dog photographer gift certificate, celebrity makeup artist makeover, a private session with Eden at her studio, among others. The nail & bone “polish with a purpose” line is launching with thirteen beautiful colors for spring and summer. 20% of the proceeds will be donated to pet rescue organizations supported by nail & bone.

HEAL.COM

A Cure for the Doctor’s Office Healing You at Home BY SUZAN BRITTAN INTERVIEWED BY DINA MANZO

I

s there a doctor in the house? Yes there is - with just a click of your mouse, you can have a doctor in your house. If you download the app, you’ll see a doctor in a snap. If you’re too sick to leave your bed, a doctor will come to you instead. Okay, you get the idea. I’m talking about the progressive and hugely successful, HEAL.COM, which will assuredly be the new chosen way you, your family and loved ones receive quality health care in your home, office, hotel, studio or any place you hang your hat or wear your fuzzy slippers.

Our Focus Online’s resident celebrity host, Dina Manzo, conducted a candid interview with the brilliant married team of Nick Desai, Founder & Chief Executive Officer and Dr. Renee Dua, MD, Founder & Chief Medical Officer of HEAL. COM. He’s basically a dazzling ‘ones and zeros’ technology biz-wiz keeping their brainchild funded and growing. She is a devoted doctor specializing in nephrology and internal medicine with loads of other medical talents. Besides a budding busy business, they are also parents raising their son. They are beyond qualified to do both of their jobs at the top of their fields better than most. Now, they dedicate their experience and skills to help as many people as they can get medical care with qualified board certified doctors just by asking via their app or website (www.heal.com). Desai and Dua understood the necessity to develop a “concierge” home doctor service based on their own frustrating experience in a hospital emergency room with their little boy waiting and waiting and waiting (8 hours) to see a doctor who will undoubtedly spend only a few minutes with them. Dr. Dua is all too familiar with hospital care from overworked doctors and staff and how its cost was more than the quality of services given or received. In an ER, there simply isn’t enough time spent with each patient as loads of other cootie-infused toddlers or broken boned skateboarding teens packed the waiting rooms. On that topic, Manzo admits; “I’m a germ-o-phobe; for me I feel going to the doctor’s office exposes myself to everyone else who is sick.” Now imagine yourself breathing the air in an ER with concentrated contaminates for hours on end... just – yuck! Instead of blaming the system or settling for business as usual regarding the doctor patient paper pushing power

struggle, HEAL.COM was their genius solution for prompt, thorough and undivided attention for patients. This wellbalanced act promotes hand picked, experienced doctors to spend more time with their sick clients, save money at both ends of the billing nightmare spectrum and prescribe less ‘go-to’ superfluous antibiotics. And it gets better. Every single doctor comes to you and you can ask as many questions as you like. PPO patients insured with major Health Insurance companies like Aetna, United Health Care, Blue Shield, Anthem Blue Cross or Cigna spend the usual visit co-pay (they do not take HMO plans). But, for a max of $99 out of pocket you can order up a top pediatrician to swab Jr.’s throat, get an annual “Well Visit” physical (Free with insurance) and prescribe you the appropriate medication after a comprehensive visit at the place of the patient’s choosing. Added bonus...no parking lots, expired meters, lost work hours or dreaded traffic.

HEAL.COM doctors appreciate the hassle free organization, as they don’t deal with billing, insurance companies, rent, human resources, staff, etc. It’s quite a coveted position being one of their doctors. However, the demand for qualified doctors is much lower than the demand for sick or needy patients on HEAL.COM. Since when have there been too many doctors and not enough patients? Since - now. HEAL Docs must travel, but they make the same salary seeing only 12 patients a day instead of 42. They can work full time or part time and are on call from 8am to 8pm every single day, 365 days per year, weekends and holidays with no jacked up pricing. Once ordered, a HEAL Doc can be at your door within two hours. If you have a HEAL Doc fave, order your very own concierge doctor 7 days in advance. Desai predicts, focusmag.us 29

“In 5 years people will stop going to the doctor’s office.” His technology, via the website and app, get rid of the consuming paperwork per visit. Instead of spending only 7 minutes with a doctor looking at what ails you, the patient will have at least 30 minutes. HEAL doctors can draw blood for the lab, give shots, take cultures and write prescriptions at the point of care. If you have broken bones assessed, they will recommend a fantastic local hospital for x-rays. Some of these talented physicians even stitch up or glue minor cuts if warranted.

“As a mom, I recognized the challenge families have to get themselves or the kids to the doctor. It means taking a few hours or a day off from work.” Her husband Nick sums up their entire mission; “Our vision for HEAL is we don’t just want to be an Urgent care on wheels, we wanna be your family doc in your family room.”

HEAL team members are always a phone call away with any questions about their services at (844) 644.4325 or to order a HEAL Doc visit. Within 24 hours after your visit, the company sends you a summary of services. Try not to get sick or break anything after 8pm, because then you’ll have to suffer an ER waiting room unless you can wait for the morning to York Times, Tech Crunch, USA Today and many more. Dua order up your HEAL Doc. However, if it’s a true emergency relates; “As a mom, I recognized the challenge families have and with a lot of blood, fainting or mouth to mouth needed, to get themselves or the kids to the doctor. It means taking a please call 911 no matter what time of day or night. few hours or a day off from work.” Her husband Nick sums up their entire mission; “Our vision for HEAL is we don’t This dream-come-true, mobile healing business, is the wave just want to be an Urgent care on wheels, we wanna be your of the near future and is steadily picking up momentum in family doc in your family room.” California, and not just via word of mouth. Dating in LA:

Where to go on your 1st, 3rd and 5th Date BY LAUREL HOUSE

L

ove can be manufactured. It’s time to start thinking about dating strategically. In addition to your app, online, and in-person pick up strategies, have you given much thought to where you go for each progressive date, and why?

Look at “The Bachelor” as an example. The sets ooze with sexiness. Red roses, candles, warm colors, soft and sensual textures, romantic music, and activities that allow for conversation, as well as heart-racing shared experiences that help to build trust and opportunities for more expansive and simultaneously deeper connections. If you want to manufacture your own love, or, in more romantic terms: if you want to have a heart-opening 1st date, that ups your chances of a 2nd date, that leads to a more deeply connected 3rd date, and you suddenly find yourself having a relationship progressing 5th date – do what “The Bachelor” does. Even if you aren’t a fan of the show, you question if real love is

cemented, and you use the Bachelor breakups as examples that it’s not successful, you can’t argue with the fact that odds of your average – YOUR average – month of dating turning into a marriage proposal, are much lower than that on the show… for a reason. So use the reality show’s strategy and put it into practice to find love in real life. Set the stage for romance. Maybe not helicopters and yacht trips. But there are plenty of realistic date ideas that can achieve the same affect. Beyond red roses, candles, warm colors, soft and sensual textures, romantic music, and activities that allow for conversation, consider how relationships progress: expanding, focusing, and deepening. Each progressive date requires a different style in order to activate different emotions that open the heart, expand conversations, focus the feelings, and deepen your connection. The 1st, 3rd, and 5th dates call for different environments and activities. Here are a few ideas of what to do in LA and why:

1st Date

The key to a great first date environment is that it is romantic in some capacity- dim lights, flowers, luxurious textures and colors (think “The Bachelor”- with sets and environments designed for a reason: to manufacture feelings), and that it is conducive to conversation. The first date can be stressful. Particularly is you didn’t adequately pre-qualify- which automatically sets you up for an increased chance of sitting across from your date and knowing within seconds that you’re not a match. Instead of going to happy hour or some forgettable restaurant, make an impact and maybe even a memory with one of these first date ideas:

Esters

LA Arboretum & Botanic Garden

Santa Monica

Pasadena

Every first date has a different energy, connection, and comfort level. Which is why Esters is a perfect first date spot. You can meet at the bar, move out to the patio if you want a little more private space, and slide onto the sofas when ready to break the touch barrier. The sister restaurant to Cassia, and backed by the Rustic Canyon team, and situated in a 1937 Art Deco building with tall open ceilings, a wall of windows, and hundreds of bottles of wine taking up most of the shelving, Esters is romantic by lineage and location. The wine tasting, cheese and charcuterie plates, and small bites will help to get you salivating, and possibly get you prepped for that first kiss (or hug). 1314 7th St, Santa Monica

34 FOCUS | A U G US T 2 0 1 7

Just because tickets are cheap doesn’t mean you are. In fact, sometimes the least expensive dates are the best (that’s because they often require a lot more thought in order to make them good). On Friday night head to the LA Arboretum & Botanic Garden from 5-8 for live music and activities. Before you go, stock up at Whole Foods for food and booze, grab a blanket and a picnic basket, then enjoy the evening entertainment. If you want to challenge yourself while reducing the Whole Foods tab, try your luck at the 99 cents store one where you can buy cheese, meats, crackers, fruit, and even wine at some stores for bargain basement prices. http://www.arboretum.org/calendar/

3rd Date/Not a Restaurant Dinner Date

The ability to have interesting and engaging conversation at a bar or restaurant is one thing. But who are they (and you) really? The third date is an opportunity to express more than your drinking and dining decorum and really get to know each other. Also known as the “sex date,” the “see if this has potential date,” the “do something different” date, the third date is when things get more serious. You’re no longer just testing the waters or giving it another shot to see if you missed something. You’re actually interested and ready to start building trust, opening your heart (a little), dropping your guard, and delving into other sides of your personality. You’re finally presenting a more authentic you- the fun, quirky, nerdy, spontaneous sides. You want to make sure that they really like you for you, and you for them, or else why continue. The third date can carry a lot of weight, because going past three says something – it shows the potential of something real. So here’s what to do:

Goldbely

Your Home If you want to change up your dates from dinners out to more intimate evenings in, but you can’t cook, instead of doing take out or ordering in, put some effort into your food selection by ordering your date’s favorite dish in the country! Lobster rolls from Maine, a NY strip… from NY, Philly Cheese Steak from Philadelphia, or any other location specific favorite can be overnighted from where it’s from. Now that’s how you make an impression that shows that you’re thoughtful while simultaneously showing how great a dinner at home can be. http://goldbely.com

Pinot’s Palette

Multiple Locations

iPic Theater Westwood A movie date is generally considered one of the worst first dates since you’re sitting in silence in a dark room, where you can’t look at each other, you have limited physical contact aside from a hand and maybe a knee, and you’re surrounded by strangers. As a third date, however, once topics to talk about have seemingly been exhausted and you could use an injection of fresh conversation fodder, a movie date is fine. Make it an iPic date where you lounge in layback leather seats connected only in twos, your neck perfectly elevated by a provided pillow and your legs covered with a blanket, plus food (by chef ’s like Eric Greenspan) and drink (including seasonal cocktails) delivered to your seat, a theater date is suddenly an amazing evening. https://www.ipictheaters.com

You know that scene in Ghost with the pottery? Get into that spirit with a wine-paired art class. But instead of a pile of clay and wheel, you’ll be working with a canvas and painter’s palette while creating your masterpieces side by side with drinks in hand at Pinot’s Palette “Paint & Sip” class. So… you won’t be sticking your fingers in clay and rubbing it all over each other’s skin. You can get dirty later. (Make sure to call ahead to check on the alcohol situation. Some studios are BYOB while others have a bar). http://pinotspalette.com

focusmag.us 35

5th, 10th, 15th, 50th Date… / Romance No matter how comfortable, easy, or casual your relationship feels, it’s important to honor two time-honored relationship traits that differentiate it from just friends to something special: chivalry and romance. Especially on this statement-making date. Date 5 communicates real interest. You have been out enough to know if you see the possibility for something real. And you do. You might not be ready to define your status or even to declare exclusivity, but you do want to keep going and growing. The 5th date is the time to show your increased emotional stake. And if you’re beyond this notable number, you can come back to these romantic ideas to keep your relationship fired up.

Inn of the Seventh Ray

Tres by José Andrés

Topanga Canyon

Beverly Hills

Iconic, maybe even predictably romantic? Fine. But so the great thing about romance is it doesn’t have to be groundbreaking in order to be impressive. And Inn of the Seventh Ray, with its twinkly allure, consistently impresses as one of LA’s original, romantic date night destinations. Step into the canyon fairyland, where every table contouring the naturally cascading creek bed has a whimsical feel. And the grand dame of them all: the gazebo table which makes you feel like the king and queen, or newly married couple, looking out over the rest of the crowd. Request it in advance. It’s worth it. http://www.innoftheseventhray.com

Hotel restaurants can be a romantic cliché thanks to the easy “get a room” accessibility. Tres by José Andrés is an unexpected departure from the generic hotel dining atmosphere. Sink into a fluffy sofa and dine off of an oversized coffee table in your own cozy living room, complete with a fireplace and bookshelf filled of art, history, style, pet, and travel books. Just don’t get so caught up in the at-home feel…, as your server will be interrupting with plates full of elevated California comfort food. http://slshotels.com/beverlyhills/tres-by-jose-andres

Cozymeal Multiple Locations You’ve been spending a lot of one-on-one time together. It’s time to see a different side, by bringing in someone else. A chef! Group cooking classes are one thing, but personalized classes in the chef ’s home create an intimate dynamic that encourages new conversation and a different side of you to emerge, while presenting yourselves, possibly for the first time, as a couple. You’re also trying something new, creating something together, and experiencing life together. Every date needs to be a building block to the next, expanding and deepening your connection. Add in a Moroccan chef teaching you how to cook a “Casablanca” meal in her beautiful home that taps into all of your sensual senses and you’re set! Try Yasmina’s Cozymeal class for a date that is as close as we can promise to be perfect. http://www.cozymeal.com

Blown Away

IN FOCUS

Alli Webb invented the destination blowout at Drybar in Brentwood, and now spearheads the experience across the nation in 8 cities, and counting...

Tell us about your background and what you did before Drybar.

I have been a professional stylist for almost 17 years. Doing hair has always been my biggest passion. I had a brief stint in public relations in New York working with clients such as Faith Hill, Paul McCartney and Keith Urban and dabbled in the fashion world before making the decision to go to beauty school. After cosmetology school, I attended many continuing education classes with Toni & Guy in Dallas and spent several years working under the late, great John Sahag in NYC, which was a really fantastic, once in a lifetime experience. In 2008 I began a mobile blowout business, Straight-at-Home, which provided in home blow-outs, strictly on a referral basis in L.A. My little business and popularity quickly outgrew my one-woman show, so I decided to expand and start Drybar. There was never anything like this, right? What was the initial reaction to your idea?

Like most women, I struggled to find a place where I could get a great blowout at an affordable price in a fun, beautiful environment. I felt Drybar was desperately needed and didn’t exist so I partnered with my brother and Drybar CEO, Michael and husband, Cameron (Drybar Creative Director), to open our first shop in Brentwood, CA. Initially, we all thought the Brentwood shop would be my only

shop, but the responses was absolutely overwhelming! We knew the very first day we opened, that we were on to something very special. I would have never guessed four years later, we would have 32 locations across the county, employ over 2000 people and have a thriving product line. I feel incredibly lucky and humbled by the last few years and couldn’t be prouder of what we have created. OK, so what is Drybar – for people who don’t know?

Drybar was created around a very simple idea: No cuts. No color. Just blowouts for only $40. I believe that almost everyone (even us pros), prefers having a professional stylist blow out their hair. Why do you think it has been so successful?

I think our success is a combination of providing amazing blowouts and fantastic customer service. We’re not just selling blowouts, it’s much more about the happiness and confidence that woman get from a stellar blowout. Since you just blow dry hair, are all your staff really good at it?

You bet, we spend a ton of time on training for both new and existing stylists. Do you have plans to do something else within the Drybar concept?

We feel so strongly about sticking to one thing and being the best at it. for us that’s

blowouts. It take a lot of time and energy to keep the consistency of our blowouts and customer experience at a very high level, so there is really no time to focus on anything else! Talking to your clients, what are the different reasons for them coming in?

I believe the biggest reason woman come in is to look great, but more importantly feel great - the power of a fantastic blowout is pretty powerful. Where else are there Drybars and what are your plans for the future?

We have shops from coast to coast. We are in New York, Southern and Northern California, Boston, DC, Maryland, Arizona, and Atlanta and we are about to open our first shop in Chicago. It’s been a really amazing, humbling journey so far, and I couldn’t be prouder. Why start in Brentwood?

Brentwood just felt right! I already had clients from Brentwood and the surrounding areas (Santa Monica & Pacific Palisades) from my mobile blowout business (which I was operating solo until we opened Drybar in 2010). It felt very central and accessible and is an easy spot for woman to get to, park and has great co-tenancy. Edited transcript by Felicia Waldman from an exclusive video interview with Dawn McCoy

of very British, Quintessentially People

What led you to LA and how long have you been here? Uniquely, I moved out to LA to be an actress! But I quickly realized my passion and talent lay in organization and managing people. That’s when I decided to become a professional Executive and Personal Assistant which evolved into House/Estate Management.

Watch the entire video interview at www.focusmag.us/eden

I know you’re involved with the Association of Celebrity Personal Assistants, can you tell us about that? The organization has been around for over 20 years. The members are the gatekeepers to the Hollywood elite, VIPs, and captains of industry. The assistants do everything from making sure there are only blue M&M’s in a bowl to coordinate with the office colors (yes, I did this), to reading lines with Oscar winning actors, and everything in between. It has been an honor to get to know these hardworking assistants. I have served on the Board of Directors for the past six years and it’s been challenging but always worthwhile, and the relationships I have developed along the way as a PA/EM have been very rewarding.

Dawn McCoy: Your dad is of course this iconic legend, Vidal Sassoon, and as a successful business woman yourself, along with your charitable endeavors, you are making quite a name for yourself. Eden Sassoon: It’s evolved from a really organic place from becoming a mother and sitting across from my father and him saying, “So what are you going to do with yourself?” And I looked at him and I’m like, “I’m a mom!” And I left that house and literally I went to therapy the next

exactly what I do now. So that’s how Pilates started. Changed my whole world.

So you had a vision and how did you put it into action? I think everything that I do comes from an organic visualization – I have a connection with what I call God, people call it higher power, whatever it may be, the universe; for me its my God – and I get this immediate gut feeling and all of a sudden it’s very clear what I have to do. And then you take the steps. You make it happen. You “You know, I’m a single sober mother. And, find the right team. That’s one that says a lot, those words right there: thing my father taught me is you are only as good as your single, sober mother at 40. Ok….why? you team. So if I don’t have that know where did that all come from? And team around me that’s gonna I’m not afraid to show all that.” build something, I can’t. There’s no way I can do it all myself. But I do a day, and I was like, excuse my language, lot of things and I’m like wow, at the end “S#*t! My dad asked me what I’m going of the day I’m like, I’m like Superwoman, to do with myself, what am I doing with [laughing] I mean it feels sometimes I’m my life?”, and I thought being a mom was superwoman. I mean sometimes I take it that, I’m done, and I sat back and I’m like, for granted but I just get up and do it again! One; I’m in therapy which means I got And I just think, alright! [looking up and some problems, of course, its life, but they pointing to the ceiling] I’m listening to you, need to be worked on, Two; what am I and how am I gonna make a difference in going to do? Being a mom for me is not someone else’s life. That’s it, that’s my goal. my everything. I love my kids and I can do It’s not anything else. I’m gonna build these all this, so I at that point, where does my businesses, it’s gonna come natural, but passion lie? And, I found it. At that point the intention is, how am I gonna make a in my life it was pilates. I was there every difference in someone else’s life? day, and I was, obviously because I’m single now, unhappily married, and pilates was my safety, it was my home. I went to bed looking forward to that next day of my journey, my physical journey and how I was gonna get through it, and just finding myself. And through that, there was a divorce, opening the business, and so much that came from just Dad saying, “What are you gonna do with yourself?” Coming from him, really it was very clear to me because he’s a man, there’s no B.S., there’s no joke, he looks you in the eye and its like “who are you? And what are you going to do? And how are YOU going to make a difference?” And he and I are very much alike and I’m like, “Oh G-d, ok here we go!” And that’s’

THE SASSOON LEGACY

You are already making a difference in so many people’s lives – your charity work on top of your two health and beauty businesses... I will go out carrying on his legacy. He, (Vidal), said to me one day, “You know, I wonder if it will be forgotten, or if I’ll be remembered.” and I’m like, “Uh, are you kidding me?” And its not because of hair, and its not because you’ve come up with an original idea, but, its who you are. You take the time, you stop, you talk, you listen…. he was blessed. And he followed through. And you know, growing up as his daughter, focusmag.us 9

April 2014 INTERVIEW | 05/2014

MIKHAIL BARYSHNIKOV / Mark Castellino

You’re universally renowned as a dancer but now we see you in a different role on stage at the Broad. What inspired you to take up acting? I’ve been acting since the 1980’s. My admiration for the theater along with my own pathological need to scare myself with new challenges is probably what drove me to try the earliest projects. It was television and film first, but now I’m really seduced by live theater. Man in A Case is based on the stories of Chekhov. You’ve probably been offered many different roles – what attracted you to this particular piece? Like every student growing up in the former Soviet Union, I studied those stories. Chekhov is sort of like Mark Twain in the US, or Dickens in the UK - everyone reads him. But the short stories are less known than the famous plays and this project was an opportunity to bring them to the stage. I thought they needed the vision of contemporary directors and that’s why I invited Annie B Parson and Paul Lazar to join the team. Can you tell us about the production? It is described as a fusion of music, film and dance. Indeed it is, but dance is the smallest element. The company members are from Annie B and Paul’s group, Big Dance Theater, so it’s a versatile bunch. They are gifted actor/singer/dancers and musicians and the play uses all those talents.

BARYSHNIKOV “The last few times I’ve been to LA, I’ve performed at the Broad Stage, and I love that area. It’s quiet, but kind of ALIVE. Closer to the ocean it’s a Carnival.

People are out doing their weights and yoga, running, bicycling, gymnastics – you name it – it’s kind of a FANTASTIC FREAK SHOW. It’s great… I fit right in.”

You have described the play as being about solitary men. You don’t appear to be an introvert so how do you identify with the role? There are two characters I play. They are both socially active, but they are solitary in their souls. In my mind the role doesn’t have to fit you like a glove – it’s the challenge of every actor to play something

the INTERVIEW

he or she isn’t, but I think all of us can relate to being in constant conversation with ourselves. It’s a sort psychological ping pong and I think we all fall into that category at some point in our lives. In your persona as an actor, how does it feel to be on stage in a role which is primarily dialog as opposed to movement? I don’t think I feel so different. The voice is just an added element. Do you spend much time at your dance studio in New York? Is the theater a second career for you? Performing is what I do. I don’t categorize things as one career or another, I just want to be professional and committed. But I do still exercise pretty much everyday especially in recent months because of Man in a Case and a new Robert Wilson piece The Old Woman with Willem Dafoe. It’s all physical theater so I have to be ready for anything. How do you spend your leisure time, when not rehearsing or teaching? I don’t teach, but I go to a lot of performances and get in a round of golf with friends whenever I can. But, OK, I confess, I recently binge watched House of Cards with my wife.

How does it make you feel to see a new generation of dancers at your school and on TV programs like So You Think You Can Dance? First of all, our Center isn’t a school. The artists who come to the Baryshnikov Arts Center (BAC) have been trained elsewhere. That said, I love watching any emerging talent, but I have to say, the one time I saw one of those TV dance shows, it was pretty brutal. I felt sorry for all the participants and maybe a little sad to see dance reduced to a sporting event. Dance isn’t a competition, and it’s rough to watch some judge rip someone apart publically. I know hundreds of amazing dancers that would never win a competition – but I guess it’s just business and I shouldn’t take it so seriously. What advice do you have for kids who are thinking of studying dancing or acting? It has to be a personal decision. I would never tell anyone what they should or shouldn’t do. It’s a tough life and they have to want it more than anything else.

How did you become involved in acting? I grew up in LA and my dad was the lighting director for a show called “Married with Children” - so every day after school I would go to set, and I think that’s where my comfort level in that environment began. I didn’t intend to be an actress - I went to Northwestern University as an English major but quickly changed to a double major in Theater and International Relations. It really wasn’t until after working for the US Embassy abroad and coming home for the holiday that a friend from college gave a manager a student film I did - he watched it and called me, telling me he thought I should stay home and give acting a shot. I did, and I was so grateful. Congratulations on starting the 4th season of Suits. Tell us about your evolving role. We are currently filming season 4 of Suits, though we were just picked up for season 5 which will begin airing next June (after the back half of season 4 airs in February 2015). Rachel is such a great character to play because she started off rather stand-offish and mostly anchored to this cat and mouse game with her love interest, Mike Ross. As the seasons have evolved, Rachel has really grown - showing her vulnerability, her layers of intelligence and drive in trying to become a lawyer, and the softness we see in her with her family. Her life outside of the firm is as interesting to me as her role in the office. Gabriel is currently making his directorial debut on this episode, so we are all having so much fun. You’re noted as being interested in international diplomacy. The world needs diplomats, now more than ever. What’s your interest in mediation? I majored in International Relations and worked for the US Embassy in Buenos Aires. I am now working closely with UN Women on their gender equality campaign, He for She, and am very proud to stay actively involved not just in politics but in social issues that I think need more attention. What are you passions, and how do you relax in-between filming? I absolutely love to cook and to try new restaurants - I was just writing about it on The TIG the other day that I will always be a better cook than baker because the technicalities and exactness of baking is not part of my DNA. I have included a couple links to recipes I made and shared on The TIG, which should give a good sense of what I like to dig in to. When I have a bit more time off, I am generally on a plane chasing a life of wanderlust. Travel is one of the most important things in my life.

MEGHAN MARKLE thetig.com

Which are you favorite foods and restaurants? I love clean fresh ingredients with bright flavors - so the whole fish (in whatever iteration) Suzanne Goin makes it is usually right up my alley - be it flecked with pomegranate seeds or bursting with citrus. Growing up in LA, I was so lucky to try endless flavor profiles and go with my parents to Thai Town for amazing mee krob or chicken satay, and then to Little Tokyo for sushi and the Westside for amazing ghormeh sabzi. But with all of that said, nothing does it for me like a taco. Good god, what are they so good?? You recently did the ALS Ice Bucket challenge. How did that come about? Rory McIlroy and I are friends and when he nominated me I told him I couldn’t do the challenge because I was traveling and in NY. He let me know he was also in NY and that he could do the video with me - we had a blast and shot it on the roof of my best friend’s apartment. It is so important to raise awareness for ALS, and the buzz our video generated hopefully helped make that happen. What are your plans for the future? I hope to be doing Suits for a few more seasons, to continue to grow The TIG as it is my passion project and I do the writing and bulk of the photography, and to do some more film roles in my hiatus - we get four months off between scenes so I am looking to sink my teeth into a juicy role that’s very different from the character I play on Suits.

11am - Rehearsals with the show’s guests and presenters in the garden and outside the house.

With his easy going manner and laid back charm, Mark Steines would seem the perfect choice for a TV host. Well, that’s exactly what he has excelled at for the last 20 years. He left Entertainment Tonight in 2012, and these days he co-hosts the Hallmark Channel’s, Home & Family. It’s a good natured daily show that takes in all aspects of lifestyle. The set is a traditional house built on the Universal studio lot, complete with bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen and a pumpkin garden.

1pm – On Air for a live taping of the show for Hallmark Channel

times Emmy winner for news broadcasting and was voted sexiest man of 2004. He loves racing and he competed four times at the pro-celebrity Long Beach Grand Prix.

Father of two boys, Steines tries to make their upbringing different from the way he grew up.

The story goes that in 1988 just after Top Gun came out, he was in New Orleans and someone mistook him for Tom Cruise. You can see why. Entertainment Tonight got wind of Tom Cruise making a movie in New Orleans and rushed a crew down there. When they realized their error, they decided to stay anyway and do a profile on Steines. He says, within a week he had 3 job offers.

“I try to give my kids a reason for doing things when they ask ‘why’, instead of just saying ‘because I said so.’ I want them to be prepared for when I’m not around – to learn to cook and fold clothes.” Less known from his TV career, is that Mark Steines is also an accomplished photographer. He travelled to Sierra Leone and took 10,000 photos in 10 days. He documented his journey in a book, See The Light: A Passage to Sierra Leone.

“It’s a different direction from what I was doing at Entertainment Tonight. A lot of that was escapist television. Here, we are dealing with what families have to deal with every day. This for me has been like going back to college. Except, I’m getting a Masters degree in living. I’m learning how

We’re not sure if it works in reverse but you get the impression that after 2 decades, Steines has made his mark in the entertainment industry.

“My theory is to donate your time in whatever passion you have, to bless others.”

His simpler mission as single parent now, is to be a good father and to raise his sons to be independent thinkers.

s the current Mr. Universe title holder, Calum von Moger hit the world stage upon winning the title in June of 2014. Calum hails from Australia, is 24 years old, and is being touted as the next Arnold. With a goal to build his physique in the style of the greats from the 60’s and 70’s, Calum is charting his own path and is quickly becoming an international fan favorite in the fitness and bodybuilding industry. As you may guess, choosing apparel for Calum is not a simple task. He is 6’2”, weighs 245 pounds, his bicep measures 20 inches, and his thigh measures in at 26 inches. Yet, Calum loves fashion and is always on the look out for just the perfect apparel line that will fit his superman sized body. Calum’s daily attire is typically fitness apparel, however often you will see Calum out in a french cuff shirt with Versace cuff links or his custom designed blazer with Mr. Universe stitched under the collar. Calum has already been the cover model for several fitness magazines. Having the ultimate dream physique and looks that will make you blush, the fashion industry is calling! In the fall of 2014, Calum moved to Los Angeles to pursue various business prospects and expand his ever growing global brand. He is staying busy training to defend his title this upcoming June at the Mr. Universe competition in Marseille, France. You may catch him training down at Muscle Beach in Venice or at one of the gyms on the West side. Los Angeles is the place where dreams come true, and Calum is taking it all in just as fast as he can. Not only does Calum spend time at the beach or hiking in the Santa Monica mountains, Calum is studying acting and ideally would love to play a role that features action heroes, Vikings and big battle scenes. With a sincere charisma and natural swagger that intoxicates, Calum is pure gold! He criss-crosses between the entertainment and fitness industries flawlessly and creates a buzz anywhere he goes. Calum has developed one of the fastest growing apps in the fitness industry – Calum von Moger Fitness – and he is working as a brand ambassador for several corporate campaigns. He regularly makes appearances at fitness events around the world and is invited to speak to young people about health and fitness while encouraging them to dream big, work hard, stay disciplined. Growing up on a small hobby farm outside of Melbourne, Australia, Calum’s family grew most of the foods they ate. This undoubtedly helped build his physique into what we see today. He continues to eat clean and realizes this is what helps him keep the edge. Occasionally, you will see Calum with a pizza or burger, but with a fast metabolism and maintaining a 3500-5000 calorie per day diet, he can afford a treat now and then. Calum often shares his golden rule about training and fitness. He is quoted saying “Above all, if you want to stand out you have to put in the hard yards. Don’t be afraid to push yourself beyond your physical limits, don’t be afraid to fail as long as you’re willing to get back up and have another go. Challenge yourself mentally as much as you do physically. Your mind will always give up before your muscles. Tell yourself when you’ve had enough, that you’re not finished yet! Never worry about what anyone else is doing, focus on yourself and your goals. Lastly, whatever you do, do it with CONFIDENCE. Be happy, be positive and smile”. Be on the look out for this rising star!

CALUM’S TRAINING TIPS • Consistency is key - schedule your trainings and make them a priority. • Set goals, write them down, keep them in front of you every day. • Always push until muscle fatigue, that is where you start to see the results. • When training be sure to always stretch, keep good form, use full range of motion. • It’s best to start with compound exercises – exercises which target multiple areas of the body at the same time, rather than just isolating one zone. • Barbell curls are a great exercise to start an arms workout – you have to employ coordination and balance. It helps you develop your core and overall strength. • To build a stellar back, it’s essential that you flex and squeeze each muscle. at the peak of every rep. Isometric exercise – like flexing a muscle. for a count of 5 before releasing – helps activate and fatigue the muscle. That builds mass and definition. • Always finish your training strong.

Funny Lady

Scene: WOODLAND HILLS. At the home of Heather McDonald, with Nikki Joel. Heather McDonald is a lady of many talents. She has mastered her craft as a Comedienne, Actress, Story Producer, and best-selling Author. Best known for her appearances on E!’s Chelsea Lately, she became a breakout star ‘mockumentary’ series, After Lately, which chronicled the ‘behind-the-scenes’ shenanigans of the Chelsea Lately cast. McDonald is also a best-selling author of two books, You’ll Never Blue Ball in this Town Again and MY INAPPROPRIATE LIFE: Some Material Not Suitable for Small Children, Nuns, or Mature Adults. She is also a regular collaborator with the Wayans Brothers; serving as a writer on their features White Chicks and Dance Flick. Heather has been a guest star on Frasier, Malcolm in the Middle, and Reno 911. Nikki Joel: Where are you from? Heather: I’m 818. I’m a true Valley Girl. I went to USC, and in my twenties lived in various locations between Santa Monica and Brentwood. Were you always funny growing up? I always knew I was funny, and I could make people laugh. I could impersonate friends and teachers and tell stories but I didn’t really pursue it until after college. What made you decide to do it? I knew that I should but because when you grow up in LA you become really jaded. Even 6 year old kids say, “Well, you know a lot of pilots don’t get picked up. Good luck sugar!”

As a stand up comedienne Heather McDonald has sold out shows throughout the country. Somehow, she has also found time to write two best sellers, and write and produce Chelsea Lately. INTERVIEW BY NIKKI JOEL

Do you write all of your own material? Oh yes. Do you wake up in the middle of the night with a funny joke, pad at your bedside? Yes. Or I have the most amazing dream and I think it’s a movie, and I’ll write it all down and then the next day I realize it’s just weird thoughts blended together. But yes, throughout the day I write small things down to go to later, to make a bigger bit from it. focusmag.us 15

We arrived to the set on a Thursday at 5:45a. As I was driving to Universal Studios in the dark, I couldn’t help but think, how does Kit do this every day? Most of the city is still sleeping when she gets up. When you ask Kit about it, she is quick to tell you how amazing it is because after she leaves Access Hollywood at 9am, she can enjoy her other full time job…being a mother of three young children. Kit truly has the best of both worlds. Because she leaves the house before her kids wake up, part of her morning ritual, in addition to 30 minutes of sitting with rejuvenating eye pads, getting in some triceps exercises using her dressing room couch, and her daily “green” drink, she makes time to call her kids before they leave for school. She fits this in between reading over notes about the day’s guests and prep from the show’s producer, Rob Silverstein…all this before 8am when the show goes live to the east coast!

Elizabeth English Girls run the world, but she runs the girls WRITTEN BY SUZAN BRITTAN INTERVIEW BY HILLARY GADSBY PHOTOGRAPHY BY DANIEL IN AND BEN SHANI

I can’t help but hear Beyonce’s anthem, “Run The World - Girls” looping in my head while I craft this ditty about Elizabeth English, the head of the Archer School For Girls. “Who run the world? Girls, Girls!” Okay, bad grammar marks for Beyonce, but you get her point. If you ask English who should be the head of an all girls’ school, she’s going to tell you, not a man that’s for sure. It occurred to her that women staff over 70% of schools, yet most principals and heads of schools are men. After noticing the disturbing “harem” atmosphere of most schools being run by men, but administered and operated by women, she decided to make a change. Plus, her income didn’t reflect the double workload she wasn’t willing to carry anymore. At thirty-five, with two small kids in tow, and years of teaching experience supporting her efforts, she went back to school to get her degree in school leadership. Her passion, in her own words, is about, “...changing the trajectory for girls.” But, her trajectory changed as well. She didn’t just want to teach girls in a school, she set out to be the head of an all-girls’ school. English will tell you the sad statistics of female students who arrive to the job market feeling less secure than a male student. She explains,“It’s confidence that governs what we choose to do in life.” Isn’t this common sense? Shouldn’t we instill as much confidence in our girls as we do in our boys? Make it so Ms. English, make it so! Well, she’s doing a fantastic job.

Speaking of jobs, English explains, “I was offered a principalship in a wonderful school in the Boston area, but I decided to take an assistant headship at a girls’ school in Atlanta instead because I knew I had started out in girls’ schools... I knew that I wanted to devote my career to really educating the future female leaders of this country. Archer had called me like three or four times and I just kept dismissing the opportunity. They finally convinced me to come out, and really anyone who visits the school - it’s ten minutes of walking the halls and you see a culture that is not only aspirational, but joyful.” Located in West LA, The Archer School for Girls is celebrated, not only because of its scholastic achievements, but also by the unique diversity gathered in the halls. With over eighty-six different zip codes populating this school, it can’t help but be well-rounded with the guarantee of ethnic equality amongst the student body and its multicolored, fabulous faces. A constant conversation you hear between the staff and students is about their school’s core values: honesty, respect and responsibility. Since Archer is a young school on the rise, there are no burdens or limits of a past stuffy heritage to uphold. In fact, it’s no holds barred. When you have thirty-nine percent of a school representing every color under the rainbow, culture, religion and ethnicity without prejudices (and... eh-hem boys), you will find a thriving and positive learning atmosphere. In fact, last year, the class of 2015, over 90% of the girls graduated with a full year of calculus and a third of those with a full year of college calculus. Every face of Los Angeles is beautifully represented. Here’s what’s also beautiful. The Archer School for Girls offers $3.5 million dollars in financial aid yearly, which gives access to loads of girls who have the desire to learn but couldn’t afford focusmag.us 39

EXCLUSIVE FEATURE

Really Real with Courtney Friel BY SUZAN BRITTAN INTERVIEW BY ALEX WEHRLEY PHOTOGRAPHY BY DANA ADAMS

R

emember when your mother warned you, “You can’t judge a book by its cover?” This statement never rang truer I found out as I dove into the world of COURTNEY FRIEL. To look at this fantastic picture of a successful American beauty, KTLA News anchor, journalist and reporter, you’d never guess how much pain she held on to for most of her life. And it wasn’t the pain that hurt her the most, but the way she swallowed it with drugs and alcohol. There’s a certain type of woman who can carry that amount of personal stress, ache and static and still deliver flawlessly on a professional performance and promise. She’s driven and dedicated. But, when it all got to be too much to handle by herself, she did the responsible thing to save her own life.

alcohol together as a lethal mix such as, Anna Nicole Smith, Heath Ledger, DJ AM, Amy Winehouse and Whitney Houston. She didn’t want to be on that list, or a statistic. Friel warned her future self; “I’m just not gonna wake up one day. I was thinking I would get caught if I bought coke on the street and lose my job and the New York Post rips those people (public figures) apart.”

FOCUS MAGAZINE was granted an exclusive on-camera interview regarding Friel’s drug and alcohol abuse and almost seven-year sobriety. Let’s go back. In her own words, “I grew up, really, really shy and people took that as being snooty. People are mean. I was bullied. Alcoholism runs in my family. When I discovered alcohol I got to ‘numb that out’ and become this really funny and out going person. I didn’t understand the point of having one glass of vodka… you drank to get drunk.” She kept it going. As long as there was pain, there was vodka to self medicate.

Her children, 5 ½ year old son Cash and 4 year old daughter Cameron were also life saving factors, which help her stick to her promise of sobriety. Friel says, “Eight months into my sobriety I got pregnant with my son after I had him I was ‘accidentally’ pregnant with my daughter and they are blessings. They helped me get through the first couple years of that (sobriety). I can’t imagine being hung over on the couch and my kids yelling – ‘Mommy! Mommy! I need this.’ It becomes a habit of ‘not doing’.” Now, she’s a single mom and sharing a friendly 50/50 custody with her ex husband, and fellow news journalist, Carter Evans. After fifteen years plus of being in a relationship, Friel admits, “The dating world has been a challenge, I’m done figuring that out… the right person is going to like me for me.”

Her career took her to New York City to a high-pressure position working as a FOX NEWS entertainment reporter. There, she met with very social people after work and mingled in drug infused atmospheres in clubs open until 4 a.m. willing to look the other way when cocaine was introduced. She describes her reputation, “I was a work hard, play hard person. I had a fifteen-year successful party career that involved being the wasted ‘fun chick’, out of control. Adderall, Xanax and Ambien came on the scene. It was a mess. I was getting older and it wasn’t cool being ‘that girl’ who was blacking out all the time.” Back in 2007 to 2012 when Friel was working for FOX there were numerous stars falling from the sky from drugs and

“Anyone who gets an intervention is blessed.” She advocates and was lucky to have friends and family rally around her to support her sobriety. But, if it wasn’t for an ultimatum given by her now ex husband and seven other caring people imploring her one holiday weekend to seek help, she might not be here now. Even though to the majority rehab has a horrible stigma attached to its services and most addicts are forced to participate, she knew it was the only option. So, she checked herself into voluntary rehab for 28 days and finished the program like the stellar, straight ‘A’ student she is. She was fully devout, “I’m gonna sit at the front of the class and take notes - be the best and when I got out did everything they told me to do. I got a sponsor and was doing it (working the program). It was a very scary and vulnerable time and I hope to never experience that again.”

Her true passion besides her career and kids is meditation and yoga. About Meditation she explains, “I’ve been doing it for over a year, and it’s not something I ever thought I would do. I was like, I’m not gonna pay a baby sitter to go sit on a floor somewhere in silence. I need to be burning calories. But, I just started doing it. The number

one thing is - just being present, being very mindful and focused on what you’re doing not worrying about the future. Meditation

Adam Hudson The Amazon Guru

BY SUZAN BRITTAN INTERVIEWED BY TANYA MEMME

R

emember when AMAZON was only selling books online in 1995? Today, you can find and buy almost anything on AMAZON ranging from chenille dust mop slippers to glow in the dark toilet paper to 55 gallons of personal lubricant (Um, why?). But, do you know that you could make a ship load of money spending nominal amounts of time selling yours or someone else’s products as a seller on AMAZON? Just ask the Guru of selling stuff on AMAZON, the awesome Aussie, ADAM HUDSON, who now lives in Los Angeles. He only sells 15 products, spends 15 minutes daily monitoring his AMAZON business and makes over one million dollars yearly in revenue. AMAZING. Wanna learn how? Focus Online’s Celebrity host, Tanya Memme was mesmerized with Hudson, a native Australian and an Amazon expert seller. Tanya asked him how he started about five years ago and why. Hudson explains; “All of us probably know someone who we consider less intelligent than us is 60 FOCUS | A U G US T 2 0 1 7

making more money. Cuz, they’re doing the right thing at the right time.” Five years ago was the right time to start a “Sellers” business on Amazon. He found the right product, branded it his own and started to turn a profit within a year. There were some embarrassing trials and lots of errors, but after he found the simple formula of how to sell on Amazon, it was up the money hill from there. Buying products on Amazon is a lot like Online Dating... it all starts with a great picture. If the first impression of your product is a bad photograph, you won’t get as many buyers no matter how great it is. With over 700 million consumers on Amazon daily from around the world, you want a great freakin’ picture of your products! Hudson points out that you don’t need a ton of products to make great money. Instead, you just need a few great ones that you resonate with and you instinctually know how to sell them or really crazy, quirky and unique items that are difficult to find just anywhere. He points out, “Building a brand is one of the smartest things you can do. You have a vision on where you want your product to go. So, photography, branding and quality are the most important factors.” Hudson is known as the Amazon guru because he teaches wannabe sellers how to create their own businesses on his tutorial site from point A to Z. If you want to learn how, just go to his site – www.reliable.education and sign up for

your courses. Adam is a no hype kinda guy and teaches his students step by step how to set up an Amazon seller site with full disclosure of all the mistakes he first made. The most important key to the success of your Amazon site is what is known as, “FBA” = Fulfilled By Amazon! Hudson urges you to let Amazon do all the heavy lifting and minutia of packing and shipping and bringing in the consumer to your products page. Within a month you can be making thirty thousand dollars with no storefront, no warehouse or shipping issues. Of course Amazon gets about a total of 25% in commissions, but why shouldn’t they... it’s AMAZON. He’s also known as, “The Laziest Amazon Seller” because of how successful his products sell with little to no maintenance or advertising. However, he makes it known that it’s a bit embarrassing when a few of his students make more money than he does on a monthly basis who are just starting off. Tanya asked him what his formula is for success on this vast multi-product site. Adam answered, “My dirty little secret is, my products are directly from Alibaba’s catalogues.” (www. Alibaba.com – for a more experienced seller) In fact, he doesn’t even touch his products he sells any longer. They go directly from China to Amazon’s ‘FBA’ department. He explains that when you are first starting off, buy one hundred bucks worth of cool stuff from the Alibaba Express https:// www.aliexpress.com/ website and begin with those items on your listing page with your Amazon Seller’s account.

By the way, Adam mentions you can sell anything you want even products that are already selling on Amazon. Go into your favorite stores like Bed Bath and Beyond, Gift stores or even Walmart and look at all the products they sell... you can sell any of those too on Amazon. Basically, you can shop, browse and “website” your way into a hugely successful online selling machine from branding to ordering products to tracking your merchandise in the global online market. (www.amazon.com/sell) It’s a low risk, high return probability. How can you lose?

I could tell you more, but... part of Adam’s gig is mentoring your intrigue and entrepreneurial spirit into this online seller world. He also invented sites to help with your learning curve - www.zonguru.com (tracks your products against other online sellers for a fee) and www.sellerphoto.com (a service which takes pro pictures of your products for a fee). On his Amazon Tutorial site www.reliable.education you will go at your own pace with 90 videos and soak up the details of his knowledge and start turning profits by following his structure and pointers. Facebook has entire communities dedicated to this phenom biz with live video news, question and answer sessions and industry updates. (https://www.facebook.com/ zonguru/) It all sounds so easy doesn’t it? Well, it could be if you do your research into what you want to sell and take Adam Hudson’s online courses. Who knows, within a few months you could be selling thousands and thousands of dollars worth of Hot Dog Toasters, Adult One-sies or Cat Condos. If you’re stuck with how to name your company there’s always, www. squadhelp.com (an online shout out to the masses for help to name your company). If you are stumped on how to brand your own products creating logos, colors and design, Adam suggests www.99designs.com (pick from multiple designers who create your brand image for a fee). reliable.education

CENTRED WOMEN

A Profile of The Glen Centre owners, Wendy and Pamela Goldman. BY SUZAN BRITTAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY BEN SHANI

T

he first time you experience THE GLEN CENTRE you can’t help but notice it’s small town, Main Street, eclectic atmosphere; a piece of real estate gold that would make the entire town of Mayberry jealous. The busy outdoor mini mall tucked neatly away behind well manicured hedges comes alive the second you try to find a parking spot to get to work at your STARBUCKS office, have a prescription filled at the chic pharmacy/gift shop or grab a tuna on rye at their Glen Deli. This hidden gem of Beverly Glen is proudly owned and operated by its heirs, WENDY and PAMELA GOLDMAN. In the late 70’s, David Goldman was a fledgling land developer. He borrowed cash from all sorts of investors to buy this odd little corner property on Beverly Glen, almost to the top of Mulholland Drive. Pamela remembers, “...our father pulling us out of school and standing across from the property watching the bulldozers plow the land to get it level. It was a hill. He was sort of floundering as a developer and was asking people for increments of $10K to invest and almost everyone said no. He was literally on the verge of bankruptcy it just had to go, had to make it or we would have lost it all.” In 1978 The Glen Centre opened with the pharmacy (still open) as its original tenant. Goldman saw a unique opportunity to bring everyday essentials up to the residents of the hills. Convenience and location – location – location was the winning formula. Shortly after the pharmacy and market opened, Goldman added the other half of the plaza. But, what really sealed The Glen Centre’s moment in time was the adorable cemented handprints of his little girls, Wendy and Pamela in the middle of the curb outside near a bearing post. He saw the future; this was going to be his legacy to give to his two daughters one day. Goldman knew his Main Street in the mountain had to sell more than milk, eggs and prescription medicine. There needed to be a great combination of tenants offering a variety of goods and services to keep the residents in the

surrounding neighborhoods from going down either side of the hill for their fundamentals. He was spot-on. The Glen Centre quickly became a cash cow for his family and stayed hands on ‘old school’ style until he passed in 2009. Being a Jazz aficionado himself, Goldman had the immense pleasure and honor of seeing Herb Alpert’s, Vibrato Grill And Jazz club opening up in 2004. Pamela proudly recalls, “We had a dream list of stores we wanted in the center. My father and I sat down and put together our 10-year plan and wrote down all the stores I could see in our spaces and it literally came true. Like as if it were a dream board for this place. It’s coming true before 10 years.” When the recession hit in 2008, Wendy and Pamela knew it was time to make some adjustments as The Glen Centre was hit hard. Wendy mentions, “After the recession, we needed to make changes. We really tried to change the mix to what the people really wanted in here... it took 7 more years to get to where we are now.” The Goldman sisters took their father’s sound advice to make sure their tenants offer a variety of goods and services, they are small owner operators and keep their doors open seven days a week from morning until close of business. Otherwise, if the stores had odd hours or days, residents couldn’t depend on their staple go-to stores and would go somewhere else for their needs. focusmag.us 63

“Oh, yeah... it’s in (almost) every tenants lease agreement that they must be open seven days per week from morning until evening.” said Wendy, “... and we are at capacity now with 25 stores including One West Bank. For the first time since the recession in 2008 we are totally rented...it’s not about rent, it’s about the right mix of stores.” They don’t give exclusives, but want stores to complement each other – nor do they want competition amongst the stores in what they offer. The sisters refuse to bring in major branded stores like a Calvin Klein or a Steve Madden shoe store, as they aren’t original and don’t represent as “neighborhood spots”.

Owner and founder of PWA, Ashlee Carignan, talks about her pilates success story. PHOTOGRAPHY BY KRISTIN WRIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY

Pilates With Ashlee is one of LA's best kept secrets, offering one on one training to help you achieve and maintain your specific goals. This boutique Pilates studio located in the heart of Beverlywood is perfect for people looking for a great workout in a small intimate setting. How did you start your career in pilates? Growing up I was always an athlete, in and out of gyms. Eventually my body plateau’d and I was looking for a different kind of workout. I saw a pilates studio on my way to work, had no idea what it was, so naturally I was intrigued. After about a year of taking classes, the results both physically and mentally were unparalleled. I knew right then and there this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. How did your career lead to opening your own studio? My pilates training consisted of an apprenticeship under a Master Trainer; we agreed to her training me while I worked at her boutique studio. The first part of my career only consisted of private clients; that’s all I knew. I learned not only pilates but the business aspect of the trade. In the last couple years I relocated back to L.A. from a brief stop in Austin, TX, once again rebuilding my clientele. After a year or two I was completely booked and I knew if I wanted to brand my name and train more people, I had to expand the studio – it all happened very organically. What’s the average pilates client and who is pilates for? PWA has its own unique style, creativity, and vibe. It’s a home away from home where we train anyone and everyone. The studio is very warm, friendly, and inviting. As I’m currently branding my name I’ve also started a PWA community by offering small group classes (2-3 people) and monthly

classes at ALO Yoga in Beverly Hills. I invite you to come see what the hype is all about by contacting me via e-mail: info@pilateswithashlee.net, or check out my website at pilateswithashlee.net. What’s in store for PWA’s future? We have a lot of exciting opportunities currently in the works. For instance we’ve worked and are working with several well-known influencers in the Los Angeles area – such as Millennial Miss, How You Glow, and Modern Ensemble (@modernensemble). Additionally, we partner with likeminded brands that have supported and sponsored PWA like ALO Yoga, SunFair foods, RESE activewear (all of whom are L.A. native), Barre Girl socks, and soon the Natori company! It’s been a lot of hard work to get PWA off the ground and get the momentum going but I feel we’ve hit our stride and we continue to successfully grow in the community. PWA is making it’s mark in the pilates world and we feel really fortunate to have our incredibly strong, supportive clientele that makes each day better and better. We truly are a testament that hard work really does pay off. To contact Ashlee, call (612) 203-4995. Pilates With Ashlee 1908 S. Crest Dr., Los Angeles, CA 90034 @pilateswithashlee

Tiffany’s Tools

Tailoring tools and toys for a feminine touch

Tiffany’s Tools BY TIFFANY KOEPKE

I

was a professional ballerina with a beautiful career in the performing arts industry for many years. I grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and trained with the Milwaukee Ballet. At the age of 16 I was given my first lead role. How exciting! I had the incredible opportunity of dancing in Edinburgh, Scotland for the Fringe Festival. Through the years I’ve accomplished many lead ballet roles; Giselle, Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and Cinderella. As a professional, I’ve dedicated myself to a vigorous rehearsal schedule seven hours a day, six days a week and adored every minute of the sweat, tears, aching muscles, bloody feet and heart ache! Since the moment I could walk to my final years dancing with The San Diego Ballet Company, those times were a significant milestone. One can never foresee the future or predict the exact path in which life will take. A huge turning point occurred when I become an entrepreneur. There was fear and self-doubt, but that is normal. Overcoming these demons is the first step. I derive my creativity and determination on this path to entrepreneurship from the hard work and dedication of ballet and have that portion of my life to thank. What a different direction my life has taken. 70 FOCUS | A U G U S T 2 0 1 7

New Chapter Presently, I have not one but two companies. I am President and Founder of Tiffany’s Tools. “Designer, household tools created exclusively for women and those with a discerning sense of style”. I believe my artistic influences are what gave me that “Aha!” moment. It all began one cold and rainy Temecula afternoon, (yes it does rain in Temecula), when I moved into my first apartment and wanted to put my

I hope will be many more ballets to follow. My intention is to provide an ethereal, fantasy world for children and yet at the same time teach them about the amazing art form of ballet. This beautiful series of dolls can be found at I was privileged and excited to attend the International Toy Fair in New York with My Ballerina Dolls. That is where Disney found us and invited My Ballerina Dolls to participate on their recently premiered primetime show, The Toy Box on the abc network. It was an amazing experience! I feel so fortunate and excited to say that we won our episode! I am looking forward to introducing the toy industry to a whole new world of classical ballet and will be working hard to bring this vision to production. “Tiffany Touches” decorating, and realized I needed tools! I went desperately searching at all the usual hardware stores for the perfect hammer and a stylish box. Strangely enough I only found cumbersome tools for burly men. Well, that wasn’t going to cut it for me! Ladies deserve tools that reflect who we are, carefully contoured to be functional. And that is how it all started! I’ve always loved hats so of course I had to design a hatbox style carrying case. Whether it be our Classic Round 7 piece set or the Butterfly 4 piece toolkit, I designed the cases to be displayed in the home as a decorative item. “Where Style Meets Function” is what I like to say. Tiffany’s Tools has now been successfully running for over four years and are sold in HomeGoods, TJ Maxx, many boutique shops across America and at www. TiffanysTools.com

It is beyond incredible to be able to share my story. I never could have anticipated the extraordinary adventures of my journey. (And it’s only just begun) Of course there are and will be many challenges along the way, but just like in any business or anyone’s life, without adversity and challenge there would be no success. If there is any advice I could give it would be; Embrace opportunity, trust the potential, and believe in possibility. (Also, be prepared to work your tail off!) www.MyBallerinaDolls.com

Next Chapter Apparently one company wasn’t enough! Ballet never leaves a dancer’s soul. I believe this to be true. My Ballerina Dolls were destined to be born. These unique, ballet dolls are meant for children to play with but doll collectors adore them for their exquisite features. Beginning with The Nutcracker series seemed the only logical place to start. It is the most well-known and recognizable ballet worldwide. We have brought the three main characters in the ballet to market today: Clara-Marie, The Nutcracker/Prince Nicholas, and the Snow Queen. These dolls are not only visually stunning but are excellent ballet training tools for children. Their engineered joints articulate easily to classical ballet positions. Kids love playing with them because it’s like a game in challenging each other to manipulate the dolls into various ballet poses. Our mantra, “Pose… Play… Educate” is fitting. Along with the dolls is a fully illustrated storybook, TiffanysTools.com unique and romantic, titled “Clara Marie and The MyBallerinaDolls.com Nutcracker”. The Nutcracker series is only the first of what focusmag.us 71

n a lovely Spring day, and during Coachella season, friends and families gathered at a private estate in Beverly Hills to celebrate Sam Schacher’s baby shower. She and her husband, Mark Biren, candle purveyors and founders of Biren & Co., are expecting their first baby, a girl they are naming Sophie. Sam is currently the Host & Producer of “PopTrigger” on The Young Turks Network, along with being a contributor at CNN and the Huffington Post. But on this special day, I got to play the “host” and “producer” of her baby shower along with her other besties: Alexis Jones, Amanda Silvey and Judy Ho...as well as her husband, who wanted to also help honor his wife and baby-to-be. We just had to go with a full blown bohemian theme for our mother-of-earth goddess. She certainly dressed the part in her gorgeous Fillyboo boho maternity dress, Stella and Bow adorable tassel earrings, Love Around The Neck stunning chokers, and to top everything off, an ethereal flower crown by Flower Girl LA. Sam is not only a natural beauty, but loves all things in nature! So, for this animal lover and vegan, we enlisted Sweet

E’s dessert truck with vegan goodies and more to satisfy everyone’s sweet tooth. Coffee Catering LA supplied the most delicious coffee and tea drinks including all kinds of blended concoctions. This drink station was never empty! The entire backyard was filled with the most instagrammable decor including an endless number of lanterns with dreamcatchers and 2 hand-made teepees. Even the backdrop for our open-air photobooth (EY Photobooth) was “eye”-candy. With unlimited prints, guests had fun and got creative making a memory book for the mommy-to-be! And when the shower ended, guests took home a gift that was truly unique and special. Mark created the “Sophie” candle with special instructions: “Burn this candle on the night, once the stork has made its flight. As you blow out the flame, please make a wish in Sophie’s name.”

What prompted you to start the company? I was inspired by my terrible hair! In its natural state my hair is a big frizzy mess, but I could never find time to blowdry and style it. So I wore it in a ponytail. Or bun. Every. Day. What is the business model of sleep styler and what problem is it solving? The goal of my company is to give women everywhere back their mornings. The average woman spends an hour a day on her hair. Imagine what you could do with an extra seven hours a week? In the past year since I started using The Sleep Styler, I used that time to learn to play guitar! Who is your target customer/demographic? Our target demographic is anyone with a high hair-to-time ratio. did you earn your first dollar of revenue and how Q&A with Tara Brown When did that feel?

Creator of Sleep Styler

We launched on Kickstarter last summer. Our goal was $10,000 over 30 days, and we made that in the first 12 hours. Up until that moment I had no idea if I had a viable business. That was when I realized that I am not the only one who has longed for a 5 minute hair solution. Tell us about your shark tank experience; how did you decide to do it? How did you apply? A casting agent called me a week into the Kickstarter campaign. I thought it was a joke! They get 40,000 applicants a year.

Once you got the call to be on the show, how many weeks was it until you pitched? I filmed my episode just 6 weeks later. I met other entrepreneurs who had been working toward the tank for a year or more. I have a day job and two kiddos, so I rehearsed to myself during my commute, in the shower, etc. How long was the filming process? My time in the tank was over in a blink! I was so pumped up with adrenaline that I can’t even clearly remember some of the details. I had binged watched every single episode leading up to my day in the tank, and I had studied each shark so carefully, hoping I could predict their questions. When Mr. Wonderful opened his mouth to ask me a question after my pitch I almost said, ”Oh my gosh you’re actually talking to me!?” Who was your favorite shark? Well geez I gotta say Lori. She’s the one who believed in me.

chance that my episode might not even make it to air, so to avoid possible disappointment down the line I just kept it mostly to myself. But as soon as I found out my episode was airing I invited all my friends to a big viewing bash at my house. As soon the show was over Lori got on my phone speaker and said hi to everyone. They went nuts. It was awesome. Since the show has aired what has been the most memorable business development to date? We have an infomercial! Seeing my product on TV is the coolest thing ever. What is your vision for the sleep styler? My product gives women beautifully styled hair with no damaging heat. So many hair sprays and serums out there are geared toward blowouts and heat styling. My next goal is to create complementary hair products for healthy, shiny airdried hair, to be used with our rollers.

Any other behind the scenes details that you found interesting? I went out into the tank with rollers in my hair. Not exactly how I pictured my big TV moment, but my job was to make the sharks fall in love with my rollers! I had put them in at 8pm the night before, but I didn’t go into the tank until 6pm the next day. They were on my head for 22 hours. How long was the actual pitch and how did you feel getting funded? I pitched for about 90 seconds, followed by 15 minutes of Q&A. I was so elated and grateful that I made a deal. I called my husband right after and we were both screaming and laughing into the phone like crazy people. How long was it from the time you filmed the show to the time it aired and how hard was that to keep secret? The show filmed in September and it aired in March. It was easy for me to keep the secret because I only told a half dozen people that I even went on. I knew that there was a decent

Sober is Sexy BY HAYLEY MORTISON, OWNER, CEO INTERVIEWED BY COURTNEY FRIEL

Soberisexy is a company that I created in the hopes of changing the stigma of addiction by developing a movement that made sobriety cool. I struggled with addiction myself for many years and had so much shame around my behavior. I felt completely alone. Over eight years ago I felt so much gratitude for the gift I had been given. A girlfriend of mine convinced me to head to the South of France. I was newly sober and nervous about living life without any buffers. I distinctly remember turning to my friend Jodie who had lived 22 years clean and asking her: “how am I ever going to have sex sober?” Her response was simply, “don’t worry, sober is sexy!” Something clicked inside of me immediately upon hearing those words. I ran back to the hotel and bought the domain: soberisexy.com. At that moment I had an epiphany; I realized that I had an opportunity to shift the way people thought about sobriety. Being a mom with 2 teenage kids I knew that this struggle not only affected adults, but it also affected

youth who experience so much peer pressure to drink and do drugs. They may not realize how courageous and cool it is to stay clean. So I thought to myself, how can I promote sobriety to young people in a positive and empowering way, and also be edgy and hot with a ‘Rock n Roll’ vibe? Tee Shirts!!!! The first shirt I created was: “The Only Coke I do is diet”. At that time Demi Lovato had just gotten sober. She wore my shirt to Disneyland where paparazzi spotted and photographed her. The world took note and suddenly soberisexy was on the map! I love to be creative, and I value the relationships I have developed with my clientele. I feel truly blessed to be in a position to give back and pay it forward. I also donate to different rehabs of my choice. I believe that my service towards youth helps me to stay sober. I get to focus on others, which helps me stay true to myself. I am truly passionate about continuing to change the world one T-Shirt at a time! The world needs hope. Drug and alcohol addiction is at an all time high, but so is the battle against this disease. I feel honored to be part of it.

Eden Alpert & Kelly Stone Singer “PHILANTHROPIC PHRIENDS” BY SUZAN BRITTAN

E

very once in a while you hear about heroes who are unsung. These are the people who would rather go unnoticed for the good deeds and sizeable donations given just so others can be happy and thrive. It takes very special and unique people to make it their mission to support others, help them prosper, get them healthy and safe guard their wellbeing. Where are these mythological creatures you ask? They are right here in your neighborhood or town. You don’t need to go far to find local heroes who drive our communities, offer hope, and get things accomplished and solve problems. Such people are EDEN ALPERT and KELLY STONE SINGER Honorees and recipients for the SPIRIT OF CONCERN HUMANITARIANS AWARD. Janet Gunn, with Focus TV, sat with these two incredible women to discuss their mission to spread hope and awareness about their charities and passion projects. Eden Alpert and Kelly Stone Singer have huge missions and even bigger hearts, so bare with me in this two-part article; I’m proud to cover.

PART 1

Eden Alpert A Woman Gifted at Giving Ms. Alpert is the daughter of famous musician Herb Alpert, (9-time Grammy winner and of the National Medal of the Arts recipient from UCLA) who opened and now together co-own, VIBRATO GRILL & JAZZ Restaurant. It was her father who instilled the notion of philanthropy. She recalls her father at a young age taking her to the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, and seeing loads of children from hospitals who had major burns on 90% of their bodies being treated to a night under the circus tent just to forget for one night how badly their little bodies are destroyed. He said, “This is what we do; we give back.” It was a simple, concise and deeply received message compounded with a visual statement that has lasted her entire life and fuses with her vision and need to help others do and feel better. Her father’s footsteps were easy to follow, however his shoes could be a task to fill since he’s put next to Oprah Winfrey, Jamie Gertz and Meryl Streep for being one of the most giving celebrity philanthropists. But, Eden is well on her way being an active volunteer and supporter for the CONCERN (CONquer canCER) FOUNDATION –

www.concernfoundation.org, which funds search for almost every cancer to help find cures worldwide since 1968. Eden’s daughter Kylie is active with the foundation as well, so these two apples didn’t fall far from Papa Alpert’s giving tree. However, money donation is only part of what drives a non-profit. Eden believes that the cogs, which make the machine run, are made of sweat equity, connections to the connected and sharing your accumulated resources. She comes from an understanding of it’s not just who you know, but who you know who can help. And Ms. Alpert doesn’t just serve one charity... she serves a few, which I will mention later in the article along with her surprise, off the cuff quip during the online interview.

PART 2

Kelly Stone Singer Fabulously Famous For Philanthropy Kelly is the sister of actress Sharon Stone. They also happen to be best friends and philanthropic partners. Due to a devastating accident in the early 1990’s, Kelly suffered major trauma to her body followed by numerous surgeries putting her in and out of wheelchairs. It was her sister Sharon who got her involved with the homeless community which happily took her mind off of her own physical problems. Then together in 1993, they created and founded a non-profit for homeless single women and children called, Planet Hope. This gave her a cause for hope and inspired her to appreciate the importance of delivering resources, support and courage to families who are needy and disadvantaged. www.planethopefoundation.com Mrs. Singer gives ‘big ups’ and major praise to her husband Bruce Singer, who is not only the second half of her honoree for the Spirit of Concern award and charity partner, but mainly, she’ll tell you - her life rock. Planet Hope restored her positive outlook on life, a sense of worth through giving and the biggest gift of all - helping others be as productive and successful as possible. Planet Hope provides outreach and educational resources to homeless, abused, and terminally ill children. Planet Hope Programs include: Summer Camp, Food and Warmth Resources (sleeping bags), Emergency Referral Programs and Hope for the Holidays gift giving events. In 2007, Kelly was diagnosed with Lupus (a chronic inflammatory disease that occurs when a body’s immune system attacks its own healthy cells, tissues and organs.) She knew what it meant to get involved with other people’s lives through charity, but when her diagnosis came in, it was personal. She, with husband Bruce and her sister Sharon immediately dove into the world of Lupus learning about its terrible toll on a body and mind. To give you an idea of how serious Lupus is, in 1955 only 50% of people who had this disease weren’t expected to live more than four years. Today, because of the medical research and breakthroughs over the years, the afflicted have normal lifespans though there is still no cure. So, they fight on and spread awareness via charities like LUPUS LA. www.lupusla.org.

focusmag.us 83

Eden’s Surprise Remark: During Janet Gunn’s sit down convo with the two philanthropic ladies, it was obvious the admiration they have for one another. Gunn asked Eden about some of the other charities she’s involved with. The first one she talks about is, VISTA DEL MAR Child and Family Services and then suddenly Eden announces, (This is the surprise quip!) “I don’t really ever share this publically, but I’m adopted at birth... and was adopted through there.” Just like that... a shared, private detail connected these two women even more so, because Kelly then followed up with; “Uhhh, we just did their prom; we dressed 50 girls for prom!” Planet Hope donated 50 dresses for Prom to Vista Del Mar so the teen girls could attend their proms without embarrassment or ridicule. In essence she wanted to level the prom playing field. Through Eden’s family, they donated and stayed connected with Vista Del Mar and the foster children. www.vistadelmar.org. Eden acknowledges about Kelly, “We’re so connected like this, this is the stuff that keeps happening with her and I. Which is the beauty of being honored with two incredibly magical, down to Earth, real people.” Kelly admits, “In life when we have success in our own lives we wanna give back. When you have that mutual respect and passion with your friend - it’s amazing.” I’m sure can agree... they are well deserved to receive the SPIRIT OF CONCERN HUMANITARIANS AWARD and that we all need more friends like these two women... and so does the world.

ore than 100 student entrepreneurs from the Los Angeles area battled it out on Friday, April 21st at the 10th Annual Junior Achievement Student Entrepreneurship Challenge (JASEC). A signature event of Junior Achievement of Southern California, JASEC is held at JA Finance Park, a financial literacy laboratory nestled on the edge of Griffith Park in Los Angeles, California. This annual competition features some of the best & brightest high school entrepreneurs as they pitch their products in front of a panel of judges and share their wares in a high energy Exhibit Fair. You might say this is their version of ‘Shark Tank’!

Shark Tank judge, entrepreneur and Junior Achievement Alumnus Mark Cuban kicked off this year’s event with a video message of encouragement to the students and got the energy in the room flowing for what would be one the best JASECs yet. This event is a culmination of a 15 week program where students start a business from the ground up. Led by volunteer mentors, students learn the basics of business, key concepts of marketing, financials and even selling stock to investors. Along with the competition, students were inspired by keynote speakers. Cam Kashani, who has been tagged as the “godmother of Silicon Beach” because of her impact on the growing technology community through her company COACCEL, the first human accelerator that focuses on building leadership, shared her journey. They also heard from rising star Tyler Peterson, a student from UC Santa Barbara who has already made his mark with his social app BOOM (theboomnow.com). Students even got their “danceon” while the judges were deliberating with the popular DanceOn website’s co-founder/CEO Amanda Taylor & VP Brand Partnerships, Lace Varn, who have created some of the hottest viral dance videos. Madonna is also one of DanceOn’s founders. The students fielded tough questions from the esteemed panel of judges that included Damon D’Amore, (founder of CrowdFunnel & WayFounder), Julian Hampton (Beneficial State Bank), Gyula Kangiszer (Ernst & Young), Nataliya Preiss (AXIANTA Financial Partners), and Joe Rogers (AmBIZ Angels). Playground : A Childhood Lost Inside the Playboy Mansion BY JENNIFER SAGINOR

“In the journey to unravel our past we are confronted by our demons. In order to avoid to our demons we create distractions. It’s in these distractions we will find our own personal Playground.” – Jennifer Saginor

T

hey say our lives are shaped not by those who love us, but by those who refuse to love us. I will be compelled forever by my formative years and the roles I developed as a child.

My father was a renowned celebrity fitness doctor during the 70’s and 80’s, a time when Quaaludes, Cocaine and Methamphetamines began to peak. He was referred to as “Dr. Feel Good,” and had a waiting room filled with rockstars, professional athletes, Playmates, models and actresses, hoping to transform themselves into perfection. I enter the gates of the Playboy Mansion accompanying my father on a house call and there began the journey of my life. From the start, going to the Mansion was like entering into a magical passageway. I instantly felt like Alice in Wonderland diving into the Great Unknown. I walk the Mansion property feeling that familiar pull of lingerie and glitter – the ultimate playground for consenting adults. A secret society – a game with no rules – a place where everyone avoids the truth, yet continues searching for it in places they will never find. I am six when I see sex for the first time.

As a teenager, my relationship with my mother crumbled underneath my father’s vicious attacks. There was something about money and freedom that was hard to pass up. I move out of my mother’s house and in with my father. A decision that will be a determining factor in my life, one I will always wonder what would’ve been in store for me had I stayed. I learn too late that to leave is not the same as being left, but for some reason it felt the same. Dad has his own bedroom at the Mansion and before long, I do too. I look around my new bedroom; at all the expensive toys my father has bought me. They say the devil is a skillful liar in that evil is governed by appearances. It may present itself as something good when really it tempts us, draws us in with a glitter disguise, hooks us, and ultimately pulls us away from our true selves.

At night, I ordered room service in the game room, so I could keep my highest score on the Pac Man plaque. In the morning, the kitchen staff would pack my lunch and when Dad slept in, Hef ’s limousine dropped me off in front of El Rodeo Elementary. All the kid’s heads would turn and stare as if I was somebody.

to do,” she said. “Like what?” I whined like a child. “Your father was here one night and we all sort of . . . slept together.” “What?” I screamed, afraid I might puke. “You had sex with my father?” I felt like I’d been punched in the stomach. My whole body hurt. How do you explain a father’s carnal desire to share female lovers with his oldest teenage daughter? It was time for me to get out. To leave the ultimate playground for consenting adults and start anew. I travel to college across the country in search of normalcy. My sweet, Southern Bell roommate helps me move in. We’re settling into our new surroundings when she turns to me and asks, “So, what’s your story?”

As the years passed by, I welcome the attention from Hefner’s newest girlfriend, Kendall, who shows me the kind of nurturing I had always longed for. I swallow her affection like a starved child. She gives me a look like this is our little secret. I have never known such closeness or felt so safe in chaos. She offers a sense of fulfillment, better than any drug I’ve tried. With Kendall I feel whole. In the end, we are both children, both searching. Sometimes we don’t know why we make the choices we do. I am 15 when I have sex with a woman for the first time. At holiday dinners, Kendall and I passed love notes underneath the table. At school, friends whisper behind my back. I’ve withdrawn from everyone I know. I’m moving between two worlds, crossing lines most people dream of crossing. As time went on, our secret love affair began to surface and my father demanded I stop seeing Kendall. Hef didn’t want it getting out that I was having an underage affair with his girlfriend. Dad went along with whatever Hef wanted, so I was forbidden from seeing Kendall outside of the Mansion property. Things went from bad to worse. My father and Hef eventually orchestrated an orgy to put an end to my affair with Kendall, once and for all. They made sure I wasn’t around. It was all Jennifer currently lives in Los Angeles working in Real Estate perfectly calculated. When I saw Kendall days later, she could while continuing her writing projects. barely look at me. “There’s so much you don’t understand. Things I am expected jennifersaginor.com
