NOTE FROM THE TEAM

“Clothes make the man”(or woman), the saying goes. Certainly, there are some polarizing views about the truth of that. Nevertheless, what is true, is that the choices we make about what we wear, are expressions of our individuality. In this Fashion issue, we spend a day on set with E! News host Catt Sadler, whose passion for fashion is evident in her insanely popular blog. We asked 5 fashion bloggers to show us what they are currently wearing, and we highlight a couple of up-and-coming designers. Other articles you shouldn’t miss are our interviews with elite matchmaker, April Beyer, Mr Universe, Calum von Moger – and two, (yes really), winners of Miss USA. We hope you enjoy reading what we have put together. For an added dimension to the stories, please watch the accompanying videos at focusmag.us/tv. We are also broadcast on the FilmOn network at focusmag.us/filmon. Cheers, The Focus Team

The key to creating different makeup looks, blending colors seamlessly and applying most any makeup look is all application. That is why pro makeup artists have careers. If anyone could apply and blend makeup like a pro simply by using a particular brand, price level, pretty packaging or trendy product names everyone would! The one and only true key to perfectly applied makeup is how its applied. Pro makeup artists either have a gift of natural ability or time & dedication to learning this key. Most women simply do not have the time or natural ability. This is where BlendIT Beauty Brushes come in! My BlendIT Beauty Brushes are specially designed to safeguard the user from pressing too hard or incorrectly during application which results in unblended, unnatural looking makeup. MISS JETSETTER | 06/2015

BLOG SPOTLIGHT MISS JETSETTER missjetsetter.com

INTERVIEW BY NIKKI JOEL

Nicole Isaacs Creator of Miss Jetsetter missjetsetter.com Born and raised in Los Angeles, travel and food connoisseur, Nicole Isaacs discovered her passion for all things food and travel in her own backyard surrounded by LA’s ever growing, ever changing restaurant seen. Inspired by her worldwide travels, Nicole launched her food and travel blog, Miss Jetsetter, to share her most candid experiences encountered during her expansive and exotic travels. Miss Jetsetter highlights Nicole’s travel adventures and features the best restaurants--from upscale fine dining to legendary hole-in-the-wall eateries. She has a World Arts & Cultures degree from UCLA, where she studied different cultures, encouraging her to embrace them first hand through her travels. From 2005-2007, Nicole was in girl band, Soccx. The group toured Europe, released an album, and had two Top 10 singles in Germany. Since 2011, Nicole has worked producing on E!’s hit television show “Fashion Police”, while using her spare time to do what she does best- eat and travel around the world. Check out Miss Jetsetter’s most recent travel adventures through London, the Dominican Republic and the Philippines!

Nicole: I grew up in Calabasas so I am a Valley girl and I went to UCLA, where I was a World Arts and Culture major, with a dance emphasis. In my last semester, I was interning at E! entertainment and I ended up getting a job there after I graduated. I worked my way up to field producer on Fashion Police. Nikki: In addition to an interest in food and travel, you were in a band?

I was a dancer and my agent had booked a job for a girl band. I had to pack up my things and move to Germany for 2 weeks. We ended up travelling throughout Europe for 2 years, had 2 hit singles. Then they wanted to remake the Spice Girls and I left the group. I finished up at UCLA and got my job at E!. I have a really big family in Israel so we did a lot of traveling when I was younger, and I was excited to experience new worlds. I have always been fascinated with different cultures.

Text focus to 313131 to watch this focusmag.us/tv/missjetsetter If you were to have one last meal, what would it be?

A burger...the best burger in LA is at Flemings steak house during happy hour. There’s also Umami, Fathers Office and Plan Check bar. Nikki: What are some of your jet setting fashion tips

Keep it basic, I don’t like having too much stuff. Being a girl, I do want options – so I make sure to pack basic outfits for the bottom, and then change up the top and accessories. For my ultimate dream job I would be the next Anthony Bourdain, and have my own travel and food show.

How did the blog start?

It started with my obsession with food and it has now evolved into a travel and food blog. It follows me through all my jetsetter adventures. I research all the best places to eat in the cities – but I make it more personal and relatable. I take a lot of my own pictures and many are posted to my Instagram.

IRELAND

What made you curious about food?

I have been obsessed with food all my life and it all just tastes good to me, no matter how exotic. The only thing I don’t eat is sour cream! Do you watch a lot of cooking shows?

THE PHILIPPINES

I can sit for days to watch Anthony Bourdain, He is my idol. If I can meet anyone in the world, I would want to meet him.

Perfect Fit

Erica Lippy is a living mannequin, who models garments to help designers make sure they fit perfectly.

14 FOCUS | J U N E 2 0 15

How do I maintain my shape and measurements? Experience. I can tell when I might be a little big or a little bit smaller than I am supposed to be. I have learned to know my body so well that I also know what to do if my body is outside of the ¼” margin. It takes dedication and professionalism. I work out on a regular basis, but not excessively. It is a lifestyle for me and has been since I was young. I weight train, practice Pilates techniques, and I enjoy hiking. My diet is based on variety – I eat healthy, though I allow myself casual indulgences. I eat sweets, as well as fats and carbs. But I know how to recognize immediately if my body is shifting. Many fit models will be used for just tops or bottoms, but I have fit both. I am mostly desired for the bottom bit, especially in denim. I started working as a fit model with an agency, but for many years I have mostly represented myself. I have non-exclusive agreements with the agencies I still work through. I have also partnered with a boutique agency, “Perfect Fit Models,” which was started by one of the most desired fit models in the industry. The agency has since become a successful, go-to agency in the industry. If someone is looking to begin work fit modeling, I would welcome him or her to contact me personally and discuss the intricacies of the industry, to help decide if is right fit. The industry is expansive; it can include petites, plus size, men and children. What are the perks or benefits of being a fit model? Besides the paycheck!?...Several things. First, knowing that through your body, they are creating a perfectly-fitting garment. You help to create a finished product and every size is graded off your body. The clothing will fit you perfectly, and it will provide a perfect fit for countless others. Many times, companies will also extend an employee discount to their fit models. Sometimes, models will even be gifted garments. The workday is relaxed, the environments are fun. We, as models, get to see what the companies are doing three months before the designs are released to the public. As well being self-employed, you can make your own schedule. I am beyond grateful for my career and for the amazing clients I work for. At the end of the day, I know I am appreciated and valued for my expertise.

yourfitmodel.com @erical_274s

Photo: tcfranklinphotography.com

I was born and raised in Los Angeles, and I remained here to attend college at FIDM (Downtown LA) to pursue a career in fashion design. Five years into my career I became a freelance designer, and in addition, started “fit modeling” through a well-known agency. I was blessed with a strong start – I was booked at every go-see I went on; so, soon after beginning, fit modeling took over my schedule, and I embraced the unexpected change. Eleven years later, here I am, a full-time professional and highly-experienced Fit model, which has been described as “a live mannequin with specific industry-standard measurements, who is able to assist designers and production team in achieving the perfectly-fitting garment, which can then be mass-produced based off the fit model’s body for all sizes.” A fit model is a very specific job, and very few men or women could be classified as one. I have been very fortunate to work with and to help develop over 100 clothing brands. I have fit everything under the sun. I am known within the industry for giving valuable feedback and pattern suggestions to correct the fit, as well as construction input that will benefit overall production. Also, with previous experience as a fashion designer, I can notice small details that can make the biggest difference. To put it simply, I don’t just stand there. Not many people are aware of how clothing is made, and why it fits the way it does. Few know that clothing is first fit on a specific person (Fit Model) to achieve the final fit of a finished product in order to garner valuable visualization and feedback of feel/fit, that a simple mannequin cannot provide. Many people are also under the misconception that models of any type are tall, skinny and fall within the sizes 0-2. This is not the case. Fit models are real women who fit into real sizing… not too skinny, not too tall. For example, I am 5’ 7”, a size 4 (contemporary), I fit 27” in jeans, small tops and dresses, and a size 5 (junior). We, as fit models, must keep our measurements within ¼” of our measurements at all times.

Elite matchmaker, April Beyer is an expert at finding the alchemy that bonds two people in a successful relationship

Wife Shopping Looking for an intelligent connection in a complicated, fast paced world. STORY BY ALESSANDRA BRUS MANAGING EDITOR, FOCUS MAGAZINE (OC EDITION) INTERVIEW BY NIKKI JOEL FOCUS TV HOST

16 FOCUS | J U N E 2 0 1 5

A

s a woman who didn’t meet her husband until she was 36, it’s through first hand experience that I learned it’s not always easy to find a partner in life who will bring out the best in you, and vice versa.

“The best way to find love is not to change someone, but instead help them reveal the greatest version of themselves.” says April Beyer. There are many women out there in their late 20’s and 30’s looking for Mr. Right in all the wrong places and sometimes we don’t discover that until later in life. There is a better way than going to bars and clubs in hopes of finding a prince charming. There isn’t just one Mr. Right for some as it truly comes down to a multitude of dynamics that can bring people happily together for a lifetime. Timing and maturity have a lot to do with a person’s readiness, but having a consultant/mentor can be a very powerful thing in the whole process of meeting your match. April Beyer is the Founder and President of Beyer & Company, an exclusive Matchmaking and Relationship Consulting Firm based in Santa Monica, catering to the country’s most influential single men. Top CEO’s, successful politicians, high-profile entrepreneurs, and other sought after thought-leaders rely on Beyer & Company when finding themselves ready for love and marriage. For more than 17 years, April has been considered the most trusted, elite, and innovative matchmaker on the West Coast, responsible for bringing hundreds of happy couples together. She has been touted by Dr. Phil as “the Best of the Best,” and voted Top Los Angeles Matchmaker by Newsweek Magazine. She recognized early in her career that the high-volume environments common in traditional large scale matchmaking agencies could not offer the personal care she feels clients deserve. She founded Beyer & Company in 2003 as a specialized alternative, pioneering what is today known as Personal Matchmaking. In doing so, her influence and success have inspired the entire industry to move toward a higher level of expertise, exclusivity and personal attention. April curated her team and designed Beyer & Company specifically for highly successful, seriously marriage minded men. Unique in her approach, April gets to know each client personally, emphasizing preparation, soul-searching, and open communication as the recipe for chemistry and connection in love. A trained Meisner practitioner, April has a powerful ability to relate to clients in an unusually skilled yet comfortable manner, bringing clients to a new awareness of their desires and needs regarding affairs of the heart. The matchmaking process and its success is a testament to the transforming power of our dreams and the importance of listening to our hearts FOCUS Magazine recently had the opportunity to interview April Beyer. How did you start your career in the business of professional matchmaking?

I started out by working with a fairly large matchmaking company

WIFE SHOPPING | 06/2015

in Los Angeles and after spending 6 years I left as the company was heading into a more corporate direction. I took some time off and realized that when it comes to the search for love and relationship, clients really needed a more personal, hands on level of service then most matchmaking firms could offer. I work with a select group of men each year and am always very selective with the men I choose to conduct searches for. I tend to become a friend, trusted advisor and therapist to my clients. Since it’s a job so personal in nature, it’s important that my clients like me as much as I like them. After all, I become a part of their lives and journey. I take a more holistic approach with what I do and that means knowing quite a bit about past relationships, family, friends, career and lifestyle. Do you believe in soul mates?

I believe in soul mates for certain times of our lives. I do think people should be getting married later in life, because who could be your soul mate at 25 can be an entirely different type of person when you reach 40 or 50. We evolve as we mature and this should be taken into consideration when choosing a partner. What should people do to prepare for success in their relationships and marriages?

Marriages are most successful when two people come together who have become the best version of themselves prior to getting married. It’s challenging for me to separate the Matchmaker from

“The best way to find love is not to change someone, but instead, help them reveal the greatest version of themselves.” the Dating Coach because so many of the relationships I’ve inspired have needed a little push in the right direction and would not have made it with just a simple introduction. I teach singles how to be authentic in their dating life, practicing self-awareness and having a solid foundation and knowledge of how they are being received and perceived. I can proudly say that I have only a 1% divorce rate, and that’s primarily due to the fact that I take the time to help my clients choose the best mate for their future. What information do the clients get about the women they are being introduced to?

My clients are sent full profiles after we have carefully vetted and personally interviewed the women we have in mind for them. The profiles include photos, family and relationship history and pretty much anything we learned during our meetings. It never feels like a blind date but rather an introduction to a woman we have met and really like. We also have a phone call with our clients to discuss the match in detail and always have a thorough follow up process post date. Feedback is always shared and helps us to continually refine our search. How do you manage expectations for both the women and men you speak with?

This is a journey, not a destination. We don’t just set up random dates so the expectation of having a profile in their inbox every day focusmag.us 17

is not realistic. Unfortunately, online dating sites and dating apps have created a dependency on instant gratification with the ability to look at hundreds of photos and profiles at a time. This is too time consuming for our type of clientele and not an effective way to date. We take all of the work and mistakes out of that type of dating and provide a more thoughtful and careful approach. My clients do not receive an introduction from me unless my team and I are excited about a possible match. If I meet with a new potential client and I think his expectations are unreasonable, then I simply won’t take

also a regular TV personality, which brings all kinds of interesting and dynamic women into my network. Every woman we meet with knows other incredible women, so my referral network is large. Where are most of your clients?

Most of my clients are in Los Angeles and San Francisco with just a few in other cities. I’m in San Francisco quite a bit, since half of my clients are living and working there. I welcome inquiries from all over the country, as my reach and network is actually nationwide. Many of my clients are willing and able to travel for a great match. Do you have any final advice for someone who is divorced with children in finding their next husband?

Yes! Take your time after your divorce. Discover what you truly want today that maybe you didn’t want when you first got married. Give yourself time to get to know people without an agenda, and find out who you are as a single person. What does it take to be a great Matchmaker?

Being a great matchmaker is really about having intuition skills, a unique insight and vetting process. Then of course, it’s vital to have a solid foundation so that when clients inquire and invest their time and resources, you have a professional background and network to back up your promises. I see too many people getting into this business simply because they’re social and know pretty women. It’s so much more difficult and involved. It’s a serious business and one that should be handled with care and experience.. KELLY MI LI | 06/2015

Kelly Mi Li

An entrepreneur at heart, Kelly Mi Li has a portfolio of companies that she has invested in – the newest one being Crown Seven apparel.

mycrownseven.com Instagram: @mycrownseven Twitter: @mycrownseven

With each year that passes, Kelly Mi Li continues to build her collection of companies, which vary from fashion, to real estate, to technology. To-date, Kelly has over 20 promising companies in her portfolio. She is a firm believer that one’s success should be used to inspire others and to help people that are less fortunate. She is involved in various charities both domestically and internationally. In 2013, she was appointed the first and only international ambassador for Prince Harry’s charity Well Child. She is also on the advisory board for Chinese Children Initiatives (CCI) UNICEF, as well as a big supporter for Pencils of Promise. What was the first business that launched your career as an entrepreneur? A restaurant and lounge I opened in 2008, when I was very passionate about the food & beverage industry. After opening several different venues for some of the most notable groups in the industry, I opened my own spot on Sunset Boulevard. I worked 18 hours a day, 7 days a week... but I loved it. Eventually, I was offered to privately sell my business and I got out of the industry. I started investing in different businesses, and started a career that gave me more flexibility to balance work and travel (which is what I love to do). Your most recent venture is Crown Seven – What made you want to invest in it? Not only have I invested in it, I am actually the Operating Manager of the brand. We launched Crown Seven in October 2014, along with a Crown Seven App in the Apple Store. We have been featured in six music videos, two TV shows, four magazines and several entertainment interviews – along with having gained many celebrity supporters. We are launching our Fall/Winter products in many retail stores, not only in the US, but in the global market. We have some very exciting collaborations coming up, as well. Who is the Crown Seven client? Crown Seven is all about promoting the lifestyle of confidence and positivity in our society. Our tag line is “we are all royalty”. Our clients, (we call them the Crown Seven Family), range across all ages... we want everyone to feel like a king or queen. Our designs and writings were all hand drawn, our fabric is imported specially from Asia (this fabric doesn’t exist in the US), and we still have made it extremely affordable. What are some key points on how to stay focused in the process of building a business? Building a business is really hard; it doesn’t matter what kind of business it is. I think one of the most important things is to know what you are getting yourself into before you start. Be ready for the hard work and grind it through till the end. You will be facing difficult problems every day that you need to solve... Most importantly, believe in yourself and in your team. What were some of the obstacles you had to overcome? I have been very blessed in my career, but I wouldn’t be where I am today without amazing business partners. I realized this is a key factor (if not the biggest one) in what makes companies successful. When I get presented a deal, I invest more in the people who are operating the company, than in the company itself. I have had my share of bad business partners in the past. I have countless horrifying stories from it... so pick your business partners carefully. You are a member of the Lipstick Sister organization? Lipstick Sister is so close to my heart. It has been a part of my life for the past four years. This group has so many unbelievably amazing women. I have laughed, cried, and laughed till I cried with some of these women. We are not just there to help each other professionally but personally as well. Words can not describe how blessed I am to be a part of Lipstick Sister and the amazing organization that Hensi Morris has created! LIPSTICK SISTER Lipstick Sister is an exclusive, members-only organization which brings together talented and dynamic women who connect, share ideas, support and propel each other towards a successful life.

Defining The Modern Beauty Queen INTERVIEW BY NIKKI JOEL SHANDI FINNESSEY MISS USA, 2004

SUSIE CASTILLO MISS USA, 2003

Their exciting years as Miss USA found them working as spokespersons for women’s issues and traveling with the USO all over the US and abroad. Most notably, Susie and Shandi were spokespersons for breast and ovarian cancer research and awareness. Together, they helped raise over $60 million for organizations like the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, Susan G. Komen, and Gilda’s Club. They fondly share Miss USA memories like being featured on the cover of Pageantry Magazine, being in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, living in the titleholder apartment in NYC, and of course, representing the US in the Miss Universe Pageant where Susie placed in the Top 15 in 2003 and Shandi finished as 1st runner up in 2004. After their reigns, both went on to successful entertainment careers. Susie landed at MTV and became a spokesperson for Neutrogena. She has hosted specials and shows on networks like E!, CBS, NBC,

and ABC Family. Susie’s been in several films, including a recurring role on Tyler Perry’s House of Payne. She has also guest starred on ABC’s hit shows Castle and My Wife and Kids. Susie is currently Oxygen Network’s on-air personality. Shandi became a co-host of Lingo and PlayMania on GSN. She also was a sideline reporter for the CBS tournament blackjack series Ultimate Blackjack Tour. Shandi appeared on The Apprentice in 2005 and on the fourth season of Dancing with the Stars. In 2010, she appeared on a special airing of NBC’s Minute to Win It, on an episode called “Last Beauty Standing.” She became one of the original reporters for ENTV News. In 2013, she was selected as one of 36 bachelorettes to compete on the reality television show Ready For Love. She was named as one of five correspondents for the entertainment magazine, OK!TV.

After completing her year as Miss USA 2003, Susie Castillo passed on her crown and legacy to Shandi Finnessey, the new Miss USA 2004. Little did these two know that this moment would be the start of what would prove to be a long and deep friendship.

DEFINING THE MODERN BEAUTY QUEEN | 06/2015

What’s it like to be Miss USA? Shandi: I feel incredibly grateful, not only because you get to do all

these awesome things, travel the world, but you get to raise money for breast cancer research which is supported by the Miss USA organization. I am also very grateful to have the title as it opened up doors and enabled us both to move to Los Angeles to pursue careers in hosting, acting and modeling. After winning Miss USA, many people don’t realize that we live in an apartment in NYC for the whole year, along with the Teen Miss USA and Miss Universe. We live rent free, we get groceries delivered, a stylist and even free clothes – it’s a lot of fun! In addition to your careers in front of the camera, you have created this incredible business called pageantology.com. How did that come about? Susie: I crowned Shandi in 2004 and while she was living in NYC,

I moved to LA. Then when Shandi completed her reign and moved to LA, I moved back to New York to work for MTV, and we literally crossed the United States at the same time. When I got back to LA, we became friends and that was the basis for forming Pageantology.

How did you get interested in doing pageants? Shandi: When I was 17, I got a postcard in the mail to compete in

“American Co-ed Pageant”, which was both a talent and a beauty competition. I ended up being the 3rd runner up among 100 women, and someone came up to me and suggested I do more of them. I only saw it as an expensive hobby at the time. It wasn’t until I was into my early 20’s that I realized that pageants can be a career move, help open doors, and be a pedestal to so many other opportunities. That was when I started giving it a totally different approach as it related to preparation. Susie: I started modeling when I was 14 years old from an agency

called Dynasty Models in Boston. I remember my best friend in high school showed me a teen magazine which was running a contest, and she encouraged me to send in my photos. I was among 12 girls who were chosen for the competition, and I ended up being first runner up. When I got back to Boston from the competition in New York, my agent at Dynasty suggested that if I could get first runner up from the thousands of women that entered, that it might be something I should consider continuing. I always wanted to be an actress and host and he said - if you win a pageant, it could be a great stepping stone. The day after I won Miss USA , I went on to compete in the Miss Universe Pageant, but I also signed with WME at the same time because I knew they could help me on the career path I was passionate to seek out.

So now that you are well into your careers in front of the camera, you decided to start pageantology...what is Pageantology? Shandi: I had been coaching a few girls here and there, to try and

give back some of what I learned. One day Susie and I got together after she returned from judging the Miss Massachusetts state pageant and I asked her what she thought about the winner. Susie said she was great, but felt that some of the girls were just missing a few things that could really make them great. There are those little tweaks that can take you from being 8, 9 or 10 to 6, 7, or 8. We realized that we had many similarities. I had competed in Miss America in 2002 and Susie had competed in Miss Teen USA, a few years before she won. And because we didn’t win, it drove us to be better prepared. In the future, if we weren’t called out as winners, we

would know that we did everything we could. That is all we could ask for. Together, we started coaching women, and not just for pageants, but for life. We even have girls who attend our workshop with no intention of participating in pageants. They just wanted to learn how to be better people. Pageantology is currently the sponsor of 9 state pageants, to make girls aware that we can help them become better contestants. Susie: I really hate the term ‘beauty queen’ so our slogan, “defining

the modern beauty queen”, is meant to define our business as not being just for beauty. We want to redefine what is to be a beauty queen.

What are the secret ingredients to being successful in pageants? Shandi: It’s really two things. One is the interview – speaking

confidently, what do you believe in and why? Can you support? Most importantly, what is your brand – why are you at the pageant? We help them create a brand – and that gives them confidence and allows them to drive the interview. “This is the ‘it’ factor that puts them over the edge”. We coached the past two Miss Teen and Miss USAs, and helped them win their crown. Susie: Another thing is that we talk about sisterhood and helping

each other. This is really important to us and Pageantology would not have been born if not for the sisterhood between myself and Shandi.

Shandi: The youngest girl we have trained is 10. We do a lot of training online. What are you best beauty tips for your pageant clients? Shandi: I really think its

skin related, because during interviews, you are so close to the judge. If they see you have a lot of makeup on, they wonder what you might be hiding. Shandi: When I was younger,

Text focus to 313131 to watch this focusmag.us/tv/pageantology

I loved fast food and the night I won Miss USA, I changed into sweatpants and I was photographed eating a cheeseburger. Every interview I went to afterward, they would give me fast food and I couldn’t not eat – that would have been awkward. So in the days afterward, I ate a lot of them! Beauty products, what are your favorites? Shandi: A huge jug of raw organic coconut oil – and the brand ‘It’s A

10’ hair product. Susie: Armani foundation, Luminous tinted moisturizer. My favorite blush on the planet is ‘Orgasm’. Final tip? Shandi: Be mindful of everything you put in your body. Also, what

you put into your head – what you watch on TV, news, etc., as that really impacts how you sleep.

L ET IT OUT GIRL IE GI RL This has always been a balancing act for me. If it were up to me, I would be in full makeup and heels, just to go get the mail. From the time I was little, I’ve been told I was a “glamour girl”. I love being a woman, and I love to embrace it. Both of my grandmothers were huge influences on me. It all started when I was about 5 years old, and my grandmother took me to New York City and introduced me to Broadway. I remember it like it was yesterday. She took me to see “Starlight Express”. When I look back on it now, it was probably pretty hokey but I LOVED it. Something clicked in me that night. I knew I was here for something greater. There’s always been a part of me that loves the spotlight, loves the attention. I started out in acting and modeling but I found myself more interested in watching the stylist fit the actors for different parts. I would bring fashion magazines along with my scripts and in between takes I would read magazines instead of my lines.

LINDSAY MORSE | 06/2015

I never could get enough. As time went on I decided to take classes at F.I.T. and then got jobs working for major fashion designers. The rest was history. You see, for me…a lot of my inspiration for fashion is rooted from the whole “Hollywood” world. Launching my own collection has been completely surreal for me. It doesn’t seem real sometimes. There’s so much I want to do. I constantly have to remind myself to “stay on track”. I want to give women/girls power and confidence. Clothes are not just aesthetically pleasing but so much more. I want to give people affordable pieces with a story behind it. I want people to understand the brand and my story. I think when you understand what you’re wearing, you wear it with more confidence – and confidence is what I want my line to exude. BE A DR E A ME R A ND D O I T The best things in life are dreams but they don’t happen unless you actually follow them. You really have to take the first step and the other foot will follow. Ambition was a trait I was born with. I love exceeding other’s expectations and making a commitment of excellence. Today’s ambitious women are blazing a new path, and they love to help each other out. You have to follow yours dreams or else what are we here for. MY C OL L E C T ION I have a great appreciation for classic, timeless pieces that last forever. I also understand trend. I love things that are “right now”. I think if you can find a way to have both, you will have a well-rounded collection. I get my inspiration through people, whether it’s people walking the streets in Manhattan or the locals in a small town in Mexico. I love to travel and see the clothes from different cultures. I enjoy watching how fabric can move or shine and the confidence it brings out in a woman. For this collection, California has been a huge influence. For instance, the dramatic setting of the Beverly Hills Hotel is Old Hollywood glamour. With its palm tree wallpaper and soft pink entrance with gold embellishments. I envision sipping cocktails poolside with a sexy, yet chic, kaftan and heels. California is also known for its beautiful sunsets. Picture sitting on Malibu Beach, with an adventurous, yet relaxed feel, of the warm ocean air. The free spirited, whimsical nature reflects a lot in

this collection. I also can’t leave out the California desert oasis. There’s something very peaceful and calming about it for me. The desert clears my head… almost dries it out. There’s so much inspiration from its vast landscape and dusty warm air. I love the extreme climate, and the beauty that comes with it. This collection provides fashion-forward looks for the everyday woman. The designs embody unconventional color combinations, prints, flattering cuts and unique embellishments. I want my line to be accessible and fun. I want women to feel stylish, confident and feminine when wearing my garments. I have taken a girlish style and transformed it into everyday clothing that woman everywhere can appreciate. Wear it at the office, school or just for fun. My collection fits any lifestyle. From long, show stopping dresses to beachy kaftans. Both women and teens can enjoy my fashion-forward clothing line. If you are looking for something for work, my “Julian” romper is perfect. This chic yet sophisticated piece features a beaded neckline, mid-length sleeves and pull-tie waist – it’s great for all shapes and sizes. I also offer items for more formal occasions, like the “Laura” dress. Its elegantly crafted V-neck and russied chiffon mid section is sure to be a showstopper. My “Hayden” shorts are perfect for walking around campus. The relaxed, yet flattering fit, and ruffle bottom trim are too cute. I’m also a huge fan of sundresses! I love their flirty femininity. One of my favorites is the “Cheri” dress in fun, vibrant prints and colors. I feel I have a good gauge on what women want – to feel comfortable, on trend and of course sexy. That’s what this collection embodies and I hope to show the love and adventure that has gone into creating it. I truly feel blessed as well as excited to share with you my true passion! F I ND YOUR MOTIVATION I find motivation in health and fitness. Working out keeps me sane. I love to dance, probably because of its aesthetic beauty.

It also changed my body. Right now, I am taking an amazing class in New York with Nicole Winhoffer. She created workouts with Madonna. She’s seriously tough but I love how she keeps me challenged. When I am in LA, I love to take a class called ‘Piloxing’. It’s a cross between boxing, pilates and dance. I am completely soaked after one of Viveca’s classes. If you aren’t in any of these locations, I would suggest going to a local dance studio to find out if they have any adult dance programs. It will change your outlook on working out. Food is a grey area for me. I grew up around amazing food and a fantastic cook, (my mom), and that started my obsession with food. I’m not a bad eater – I don’t eat McDonald’s for instance, but I just love food. Right now, I’m trying to be on portion control. It’s really incredible how much food we eat which we don’t need. Food will always be a work in progress with me because I actually enjoy it, and I love tasting new foods. I think it’s everything in moderation. My mother always told me when it comes to your life, never let yourself go too far out of the box, and you’ll be fine.

LAUREN GORES IRELAND | 06/2015

Spring Forward By Reflecting Back

T

BY LAUREN GORES IRELAND

he start of spring reminds us to reset, recharge and reenergize. There’s something about fresh blooms and new life that prompts our surroundings to change. Spring is nature’s way of reassuring us it’s okay to begin again. To spring forward, we must first be willing to reflect back on the people, the places and the things that impacted us over the past year. Who challenged you? What devastated you? When and why? A willingness to answer those questions pushes you to preserve what’s positive and to dispose of the rest. Spring cleaning should span from our closets to our confidantes to our recurring habits. Often times, it’s easiest to begin with something tangible, like closet clutter. A good rule to follow is to let go of anything you haven’t used or worn in the past year. Invite friends over to take whatever they’d like from your giveaway pile, and donate the rest. Make room for spring staples like white denim, floral prints, fringe and retro sunglasses. Choose to splurge on classic pieces, like a spring trench, strappy sandals and a lightweight tote. Refocusing your spending habits on pieces you can have over multiple seasons will make you feel less guilty about your purchases. You’ll find something as simple as a clean closet will make you feel unexpectedly empowered to create change in other areas of life. Inevitably, those other areas are often tougher to tackle. Our work and relationships — even the negative parts — are much harder to part from. But just like the clothing we wear should make us feel confident, so should the people in our life. We deserve to feel pushed, motivated, reassured and safe. We deserve to be lifted, empowered, encouraged and understood. This requires us to look closely at where we’re dedicating our time. Let go of those individuals who

brew negativity, who make you feel incapable, who rarely evoke optimism. Instead, make it a point to refocus your energy on those who awaken your mind and calm your anxieties. The same should be applied at work. Our careers are a huge part of who we are, both at the office and at home. Unhappiness in our job leads to unnecessary stress in our personal endeavors. If you often find yourself frustrated over the direction of your career, make a change. Such a change doesn’t necessarily have to be as significant as switching jobs or changing paths altogether. Perhaps it begins with making a more subtle change, like having an honest discussion with your boss, creating a goals list, brainstorming future business ideas or developing a savings account so you’re someday able to really create the career you want. Every successful experience in life begins with a willingness to change. Change is often tougher to tackle than we initially envision. Hurdle after hurdle will tempt us to take the more convenient route. Still, I hope you have the courage to begin. Because the longer you wait, the more fearful you’re becoming, and fear is life’s worst enemy — it stalls creativity and drains our senses. Embrace spring’s ability to prompt new beginnings, and go after the journey you’re dreaming of. Current Exhibitions Rock & Roll Billboards of the Sunset Strip Until 16 August

Featuring more than twenty photographs of hand-painted billboards that dominated the Los Angeles landscape for almost two decades, this exhibition—displayed in the Skirball’s community space known as the Ruby Gallery—brings to life a unique period in the history of rock & roll and the fabled Sunset Strip, whose nightclubs were the birthplace of rock & roll royalty. Photographer Robert Landau, traces the billboard phenomenon from the breakthrough promotion for the debut album by the Doors in 1967 to the advent of MTV in the 1980s, which signaled the end of an era. Joseph Holtzman

Sink Or Swim

Opening 6 June

Joseph Holtzman often culls his subjects from popular culture and literature, which provide inspiration for paintings that are largely abstract but with hints of representational imagery. Jane Austen, for example, is the subject of one painting. Rather than give us a legible portrait of Austen or subjects from her writings, Holtzman combines figurative and abstract elements, resulting in a colorful panoply of swirling patterns and motifs. Holtzman’s process is as innovative too. He begins with pieces of polished slate or marble and thinly applies layers of oil paint to the surface of the stone. Using a tool to carve into the paint, he marks the surface with scratches, allowing the marble’s luminosity to shine through.

MASTER OF THE UNIVERSE | 06/2015

A

s the current Mr. Universe title holder, Calum von Moger hit the world stage upon winning the title in June of 2014. Calum hails from Australia, is 24 years old, and is being touted as the next Arnold. With a goal to build his physique in the style of the greats from the 60’s and 70’s, Calum is charting his own path and is quickly becoming an international fan favorite in the fitness and bodybuilding industry. As you may guess, choosing apparel for Calum is not a simple task. He is 6’2”, weighs 245 pounds, his bicep measures 20 inches, and his thigh measures in at 26 inches. Yet, Calum loves fashion and is always on the look out for just the perfect apparel line that will fit his superman sized body. Calum’s daily attire is typically fitness apparel, however often you will see Calum out in a french cuff shirt with Versace cuff links or his custom designed blazer with Mr. Universe stitched under the collar. Calum has already been the cover model for several fitness magazines. Having the ultimate dream physique and looks that will make you blush, the fashion industry is calling! In the fall of 2014, Calum moved to Los Angeles to pursue various business prospects and expand his ever growing global brand. He is staying busy training to defend his title this upcoming June at the Mr. Universe competition in Marseille, France. You may catch him training down at Muscle Beach in Venice or at one of the gyms on the West side. Los Angeles is the place where dreams come true, and Calum is taking it all in just as fast as he can. Not only does Calum spend time at the beach or hiking in the Santa Monica mountains, Calum is studying acting and ideally would love to play a role that features action heroes, Vikings and big battle scenes. With a sincere charisma and natural swagger that intoxicates, Calum is pure gold! He criss-crosses between the entertainment and fitness industries flawlessly and creates a buzz anywhere he goes. Calum has developed one of the fastest growing apps in the fitness industry – Calum von Moger Fitness – and he is working as a brand ambassador for several corporate campaigns. He regularly makes appearances at fitness events around the world and is invited to speak to young people about health and fitness while encouraging them to dream big, work hard, stay disciplined. Growing up on a small hobby farm outside of Melbourne, Australia, Calum’s family grew most of the foods they ate. This undoubtedly helped build his physique into what we see today. He continues to eat clean and realizes this is what helps him keep the edge. Occasionally, you will see Calum with a pizza or burger, but with a fast metabolism and maintaining a 3500-5000 calorie per day diet, he can afford a treat now and then. Calum often shares his golden rule about training and fitness. He is quoted saying “Above all, if you want to stand out you have to put in the hard yards. Don’t be afraid to push yourself beyond your physical limits, don’t be afraid to fail as long as you’re willing to get back up and have another go. Challenge yourself mentally as much as you do physically. Your mind will always give up before your muscles. Tell yourself when you’ve had enough, that you’re not finished yet! Never worry about what anyone else is doing, focus on yourself and your goals. Lastly, whatever you do, do it with CONFIDENCE. Be happy, be positive and smile”. Be on the look out for this rising star!

CALUM’S TRAINING TIPS • Consistency is key - schedule your trainings and make them a priority. • Set goals, write them down, keep them in front of you every day. • Always push until muscle fatigue, that is where you start to see the results. • When training be sure to always stretch, keep good form, use full range of motion. •

It’s best to start with compound exercises – exercises which target multiple areas of the body at the same time, rather than just isolating one zone.

Barbell curls are a great exercise to start an arms workout – you have to employ coordination and balance. It helps you develop your core and overall strength.

To build a stellar back, it’s essential that you flex and squeeze each muscle. at the peak of every rep. Isometric exercise – like flexing a muscle. for a count of 5 before releasing – helps activate and fatigue the muscle. That builds mass and definition.

• Always finish your training strong.

The Adventures of the Cahn Family

Children’s Farmers Market Brentwood Glen is an amazing neighborhood. We have absolutely loved living here for the past few years. Every April there is a special block party that caters to kids. Montana Avenue (between Church and Beloit) is blocked off and transformed into a playland with horse rides, bounce houses, music, and food. A few weeks ago, our neighbor (and friend) Glenda Bard kicked it up a notch by organizing a children’s farmers market. The corner of Beloit and Waterford was filled with little ones selling fresh eggs, cookies, banana bread, brownies, lemonade, oranges, lemons, clothing, and jewelry. There were also games, and a coloring station so the kids could play. At the end of the afternoon, all the young entrepreneurs munched on pizza and counted the money they raised. Our daughter, Olive, collected $38 from selling chocolate chip cookies and banana bread. I’m not sure it covered the ingredients or the time her daddy put into baking them – but it was sooooooo worth it to see how excited she was to set up her table. Because the farmer’s market was such a success, there has already been talk of another. Yet another reason why Brentwood Glen is the best neighborhood for families in Los Angeles!

How did you get your start in the modeling industry?

What makes this “classic beauty” a “supermodel,” and how will she use this status to help others achieve their dreams.

You’ve worked for a plethora of clients, which do you feel were your most prestigious jobs?

PHOTOGRAPHY BY DHRUMIL DESAI

The day after I graduated college, I was discovered by Kenya Knight at Nous Model Management in Los Angeles. My first job was for Abercrombie & Fitch with Bruce Weber and my second job was for Guess?. After working for these two prestigious clients, I went to Milan, Italy to hone my modeling skills. While in Milan, I was scouted by Marilyn New York and Marilyn Paris. Two months later, I found myself living and modeling in New York (my hometown) and globe trotting for some of the biggest clients in the world.

Yes, I have had the great honor to work with some of the best brands on the planet. I would say working with Paul Marciano and Ellen Von Unwerth for Guess?, Raphael Mazzucco for Victoria’s Secret, and gracing the covers of Cosmopolitan and Vogue were a few of my most prestigious jobs. The above-mentioned photographers are three of the most iconic fashion photographers of all time; and in the modeling industry it is very important which photographers snap your photos. High caliber photographers typically shoot for clients that are considered the crème de la crème of the fashion industry. Some other legendary photographers I have been blessed to work with are Steve Hiett, Terry Richardson, Patrick Demarchelier, Russell James, Max Vadukul and Howard Schatz. When clients look at your portfolio and see that you have shot with major photographers, then you are able to book the coveted “money jobs”. You mention “money jobs” and you have often been called “one of the most bankable faces in the industry”. What do these terms mean and how did you earn these jobs and titles?

These labels means that I am a “money girl”, who books some of the highest paying jobs in the industry such as skin, hair, and lingerie advertising. Having healthy skin and hair were key to becoming the face of brands such as L’Oreal, Pantene, Jergens, Clairol, Redken, Kerastase, Matrix, Garnier, Vidal Sassoon, Avon, Mary Kay, and Victoria’s Secret Beauty. My natural hourglass shape, made me a lingerie company favorite, and I worked for top brands around the globe, such as Victoria’s Secret, Frederick’s of Hollywood, Warners, Vassarette, Wonderbra, La Senza, Christian Lacroix, Bras-n-Things, and Barbara Paris. You are often referred to as a classic beauty and supermodel, how does a model earn these distinctions?

It is said, “A classic beauty is born, not made.” The classic beauty designation is given to models that have perfectly symmetrical features, oval faces, almond-shaped eyes, slim and delicate noses, high-sculpted cheekbones, and medium-full lips. Typically this type of model is the envy of other models because they are not limited to just one category of work, the perk of being a classic beauty is that it often leads to a model being elevated to supermodel status. A supermodel is a model that has worked with top clients in the five main categories: editorial, advertising, catalog, runway and television commercials. So basically my facial features and modeling work have earned me these titles. You formed Supermodel University & Hollywood Academy of the Arts to help others achieve their dreams in the modeling and entertainment industries, can you tell us more about that?

GLAM DELIVERED | 06/2015

Glam Delivered BY ALESSANDRA BRUS, Managing Editor, Focus Magazine (OC Edition) Interviewed by NIKKI JOEL, Focus TV Host

Santana and here’s what the brunette beauty had to say: “I’m an LA-based actress with a deep love for all things fashion and fabulous. I was born and raised in El Paso, Texas and moved to Los Angeles when I was 15 years old to pursue my first love and passion, which is acting. Along the way, I had an affair with beauty and fashion for which I haven’t been able to shake. Have you always been interested in beauty? I think as a woman, beauty is always intrinsic to our psyche, not in a vain way, but in an empowering way. I think when we look good, we feel good and in that respect I love beauty and think it’s important to always take care of ourselves.

C

elebrity stylist, Joey Maalouf and actress and fashion blogger Cara Santana have teamed up and created the TheGlamApp. Do you sometimes find yourself too busy to make that hair appointment or too busy to wait for a manicure or pedicure before a dinner date, special event or that party you have just been invited to? There is now a solution. TheGlamApp is now your brand new beauty-on-demand resource. With the push of a button, TheGlamApp delivers beauty experts to your front door, offering services that range from a blow dry, to professional makeup applications, or just a simple polish change. With TheGlamApp there’s no need to leave your home, they bring the salon experience to your doorstep. Additionally, the app also acts as a virtual agency, allowing stylists to act as freelance artists; making their own hours, building clientele, and managing their schedules and appointments. FOCUS TV host Nikki Joel had the pleasure of sitting down with the Ms.

I know you are an incredible actress, but how did you come up with this amazing idea of the TheGlamApp, and how did you become partnered with your stylist Joey Maalouf? Joey is the hair and makeup expert to the stars and I am but one of many clients that he has. I was taking an Uber one day and it hit me, “oh my gosh”, Uber for hair, makeup and nails, we need to create that.” I wanted to create something to simplify life, but wondered if it was a legitimate idea from the industry’s point of view. I called Joey and wanted it to be validated by a trusted professional in the business of beauty. Joey loved the idea and said he wanted to make it even better than what was currently in the market today, so in addition to personal beauty, we have also come up with an agency for up and coming stylists as well. In doing my research, I realize that what really separates TheGlamApp from the current service offerings by others, is that you offer varied pricing depending on a stylist’s experience level. This was something that was really important to us, and we wanted to create this luxury experience for everyone, even those on a budget.

So how does a person become a contractor for TheGlamApp? If you are a licensed beauty or hair stylist, let us know how much experience you have and after background checks we put you on the sliding scale. It’s that simple. What about tipping? How does that work? Yes, you can add gratuity, but it’s at your discretion. We’ve arrange it so that cash is not exchanged and I think that adds to the simplicity of our services. The user creates an account and all the services are paid through the app. With all this going on, I know acting is still important very important to you… Yes, I am on the second season of Salem and I am so excited about the show. It’s on the WGN network, and I play the new love interest for the main character. About the TheGlamApp: Depending on where you live, a stylist comes to you within 60 minutes on average. The services are currently available in LA and NY. Santana and Maalouf expect service to be available in most major U.S. markets by the end of 2016 and have made plans to branch out internationally in the company’s third year of operation to London and Paris among other cities.

Make Up Mistakes We All Make And How To Fix Them BY VIVA GLAM MAGAZINE

We’ve all made mistakes with our makeup at some point in our lives. Sometimes, we are just in a rush and the lighting was not preferable next to your mirror. Sometimes we didn’t take weather into account and the makeup melts right off. But the team at VIVA GLAM Magazine is here to help you fix these common mistakes, so you never make them again.

1.

While high-definition powder, such as the one by Make up For Ever, can make any complexion look flawless with its silky smooth finish, it is important to be cautious with this type of product. If applied incorrectly, it can make your face look ghostly especially with flash photography. Only apply it lightly with a large powder brush and make sure to blend it into your skin.

44 FOCUS | J U N E 2 0 1 5

2.

Eyeshadow primer is key when wearing any color of eyeshadow. It prevents creasing on the eyelid and helps your eyeshadow stay on all day long. A great eye primer to use is the Urban Decay Primer Potion that comes in a natural beige color. You can also get it in different shades such as “Sin” to give your eyelids a champagne base that you can either wear on its own or under an eyeshadow.

3.

Bronzer is an amazing product that can make complexions looks warmer and more defined. However, applying too much or using the incorrect color can give us a muddy or even orange look. Pick a bronzer that has more of a cool undertone instead of an orange undertone. Lightly sweep your bronzer on your temples, jaw line, and at your check bones. This will give you the perfect natural bronzed look. The NYC Smooth Skin bronzer is affordable and one of our favorites!

4.

Another makeup mishap is applying foundation over dry or flaky skin. Foundation will not cover these areas, but will actually accentuate them! Make sure to apply moisturizer and primer to give your skin a smooth base for your foundation. If your skin is still too dry, mix a little bit of your moisturizer with your foundation and apply it with your fingers instead of your sponge or brush to warm up the product.

Red Carpet’s Best Kept Secret

Stephanie Yvonne Alvarez is a Los Angeles born and raised fashion designer. Why are you a fashion designer?

In many ways, fashion is in my blood. My father’s family is from Guatemala where my grandfather owned a clothing company. My father then grew up learning fashion as the family business and brought that knowledge with him when he emigrated to America and passed it down to me. He really nurtured my interest in fashion. Growing up I was always trying new things like acting, sports, singing and music, but something about fashion made me feel as if I had found the missing piece of my soul I was searching for that whole time. Although we didn’t have a lot of money when I was growing up, I was always creating in my mind beautiful, glamorous clothing. Since I couldn’t buy them for myself, I resolved to create them for those that can. So when I was 13, I designed my first gown and I haven’t looked back since. I can’t imagine how floored my 13-yearold self would be to find out that my designs are now on the red Who have you designed for? carpet. I lived for Tuesday nights when I’d get on air to interview an oncologist, or a woman who has been fighting cancer, or survived disease under extraordinary circumstance. I thought developing a radio show and writing for countless publications would be the ultimate fulfillment, but I was wrong. The joy I got from the emails and feedback from my articles was humbling, but at the end of the day I was still spending eight hours a day in an office feeling as if I wasn’t making a difference. I started to feel like Clark Kent living between his ordinary life and that of his extraordinary alter ego Super Man. That being said, job hunting was never on my radar. Frankly, I wasn’t looking for change. I had feared change my whole life, so why would I seek it out by leaving the one thing that had been so stable for so long…….my job?! It wasn’t until I flew to Chicago to meet an incredible team of people working so hard to help people fighting the same disease I had lost my father to, that I ever thought about leaving what I knew. On November 8th 2014, I flew half way across the country for a meeting that I thought would be similar to the many meetings I had with numerous cancer foundations before. I’d talk to them about what they do, then interview them on my radio show. I was wrong. That three hour meeting at the office of IMERMAN ANGELS in Chicago that day has forever changed my life. I left there inspired, more so than I had ever been in my life. This team of people was connecting Cancer Patients with cancer survivors everywhere, providing the one thing so many people battling cancer and their caregivers didn’t have….SUPPORT. When they called a couple

weeks later asking me to join their team, and bring the program out to Los Angeles, I was humbled. The opportunity to be a part of a team who worked so selflessly to help the so many people battling such a devastating disease that I had been so personally affected by, was the light I was looking for the other six days a week. I wanted to be part of Imerman Angels, even if it meant leaving everything that was comfortable to me, I knew in my heart that this was a leap of faith that would be so very rewarding. Shortly after accepting the position as Regional Director of Imerman Angels, I told my mom that I had chosen to become a part of this amazing non –profit organization. Like any mother she asked me if I was sure this was the path I wanted to take. Without any hesitation I said yes. I knew she didn’t want me to do this for my dad or anyone else. In my heart I knew I was doing this because of him, but for myself. I knew that working with and growing this organization that I so believed in, would give me the ultimate fulfillment. And it has! I have two months under my belt now as the Regional Director of Imerman Angels, and the feeling I get after connecting with fighters, survivors, and caregivers on a daily basis is indescribable. To know that I am part of an organization whose goal is to ensure that no one faces cancer alone, and will stop at nothing to reach every single person that cancer has touched, is incredible. As a community we must always remember, giving is not just about making a donation, it’s also about making a difference. Together we can inspire and uplift each other by humanizing cancer and spreading awareness to continue to grow our network. The City of Angels just gained a few more… If you are a cancer fighter, survivor or caregiver in need of support, please go to imermanangels.org

A Fashionable Startup With A Heart… BY ALESSANDRA BRUS, Managing Editor, Focus Magazine (OC Edition)

L

et’s face it, I LOVE TO SHOP! Most women do. We do it on-line (desk-top, iPhone, iPad), in stores, malls, boutiques, through a catalogue….you name it, we shop it. We bring the clothes into the house in dry cleaner bags, wait until hubby is on the phone, take price tags off...whatever it takes and then say, “this old thing”? I got it on sale. Hey, if I didn’t pay full price, I am saving money right? Bottom line, women love shopping and it’s more than a hobby for us. Shopping for some of us is a stress reliever. My mother always said, it’s better to ask for forgiveness than to ask permission. I used to walk down Melrose Avenue in Hollywood and peruse every vintage shop there was looking for that hidden gem, a Gucci bag or a Valentino dress. I was right out of college and couldn’t afford to shop at Dior, Prada or Gucci, so this was my only real option to find interesting, designer pieces. I would think to myself, somehow, somewhere I am going to find that amazing piece that nobody else will have. A beautiful dress or purse that someone bought, wore once and then never used it again. It will be elegant and unique and perhaps, have that element of “cool” that can’t be found just anywhere. As a mother now, I don’t always have the time to drive all over town looking for luxury goods at a good price. The kids schedules, and the busyness of life keeps me in my office on my computer... writing. Although, I must admit I do sneak out to see what has recently hit the runways. I just saw a Derek Lam long suede coat and multi colored dress (sixties style) that I literally dreamt about for a week. I like to feel the fabrics, see the stitching, study the treatments on clothing whether it be Prada, Chanel, Dior, Gucci or Louis Vuitton. I love it all. I remember watching Audrey Hepburn when I was 14 and thinking wow, she has great style. Those designer trench coats and sexy LBD she wore - voila! Wouldn’t it be fabulous to find these items for at a discount without having to buy counterfeit goods. Who wants a fake Chanel bag? An amazing woman based in Orange County, found a way. Entrepreneur, Jennifer Bell is founder and CEO of a new luxury resale online site called SUGAR’S GONE. She’s a real woman 50 FOCUS | J U N E 2 01 5

that had a great idea and has an altruistic heart. She, like many of us women, loves to shop. Circumstances changed in her life and she found herself with literally boxes and boxes of what we can call a savvy, designer wardrobe. She needed to sell some of her fabulous wardrobe, but in an uncomplicated way and so her idea of SUGAR’S GONE was born. What she does, is offer women a marketplace to shop luxury clothing, bags, shoes and accessories online. SUGAR’S GONE only focuses on high quality goods that have been gently used at a deep discount compared to designer retail prices. Some women purchase items for an evening or they receive a designer clutch as a gift, use it once and then it’s never used again. SUGAR’S GONE has made it easier for the smart shopper to purchase these wardrobe essentials and easy for the consigner to sell them. You can simply take photos from your iPhone, upload it to the site and authenticate it right there. As soon as the item has sold, SUGAR’S GONE will notify the seller of payment received and then you simply send the item off to the buyer via UPS. It’s all been set up to make the transaction seamless for both buyer and seller. Jennifer Bell, founder of Sugars Gone. With a beautifully crafted and easy to use website, the new luxury online consignment site is a fusion between, traditional and modern pieces with an eye for the highest quality offerings from the most coveted designer fashion houses. What sets SUGAR’S GONE apart from other online luxury resale sites? They are a believer in giving back by collaborating with charities such as, The Women’s Global Empowerment Fund, (wgefund.org), Women’s Domestic Abuse Hotline (thehotline.org), and Laura’s House, (laurashouse.org). SUGAR’S GONE can be found at sugarsgone.com, @sugarsgone on instagram and on Twitter. Anytime we can support a strong woman, living out her passion, we will!
