Home Design Meets Fashion

the next step in design evolution seems to be a marked reversal toward the eccentric and the quirky.

Across the globe, how we clothe and decorate our bodies seems to be the heartbeat of personal expression. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that this month’s Focus On Design has cast its eyes toward the world of fashion. Before looking at how fashion might influence our practical, day to day choices for residential interior design and architecture, I thought it might be interesting to consider that there may be a symbiotic crossing from fashion to home design that may be occurring, even if we are not consciously aware of it taking place.

After a decade of watching mainstream home design favor restrained, clean, minimalism… from contemporary, often green architecture, and the recently chic obsession with mid-century, Scandinavian, modern simplicity… the next step in design evolution seems to be a marked reversal toward the eccentric and the quirky. The many detailed design nuances from graphic wall papers to ornate jewelry, from intricate hair fashions, colors to Afros, from tasseled pillows to fringed sofas, along with the (over the top) collecting of things to display, are all back with gusto in the pages of the recent shelter and fashion magazines. Body art, and its explosion of detail, color, and coverage, seems to have reached new extremes in its acceptance and usage in the western culture during this decade. It’s not only the sports stars and movie stars that have tattooed their muscular or highly developed parts, but there’s hardly a cheerleader, car salesman. or house wife that hasn’t inked some image on his or her frame, from neck to ankle.

Although the all white interior may always be classic and accepted as ‘good taste’, the current swing towards color, pattern, detail, and uniqueness, seems to be the natural, evolutionary progression of fashion and style. Just as mid-century’s modern minimalism of the 50’s turned to the Pop and Op art exuberance of the 60’s, from Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band regalia, to the resurgence of English and French Country interiors (i.e., stuff and more stuff)…the design moment seems to have returned again where the current clean, hushed, mushroom tones and soft white linen starkness of Belgian Design, (think Restoration Hardware’s ode to tastemaker Axel Vervoordt), is shifting in favor of the eclectic mixture of multiple styles within a single structure, the splash of ethnic pattern from every Moroccan pillow to Turkish Suzanni throw, from animal prints of the entire Serengeti Plains to the kaleidoscopic butterfly graphics of artist Damien Hirst.

I have every reason to believe these trends in fashion, art, architecture and home interiors will continue to swing from one camp to the other, and back again, like family generations shifting from careful conservatives, to adventurous, gambling risk takers, only to return again in the following generation to safer, and narrower paths. The one and only certainty is that there will be continuous change. Change that creates new wardrobes, in new closets, in new homes with new styles…before the opposite in tastes and fashion rear their rebellious heads once again and make some design noise!

What is the story about you catering at the Oscars ceremony?

When I first opened I was approached to cater a charity event, C-CAP, careers through culinary arts, which provides scholarships for kids. I am a sucker for education for kids so couldn’t possibly refuse. Although I was ‘a bit’ overwhelmed, I decided to do it. We took our shavers and went to the event. When we set up in the kitchen, Sherry Yard, at the time the executive pastry chef for WP, came into the kitchen and tasted our product. She liked it so much that she invited us to cater events at Spago Beverly Hills, and then….to join them at the table at the Governors Ball. We served our silky ribbons of espresso, shaved ice and snowflakes of blood orange. Like most things in life, rather random.

Who is your own celebrity crush?

A Sweet Crush

Yael Lustmann has a crush, and like the first joyous emotions of a teenager in love, she has a pressing passion to tell everyone she knows about it.

What were the circumstances that led you to open Sweet Crush?

I have three little girls and when I feed them I look for three things: tasty, healthy and low calories. I could never find a dessert that would hit on all counts. When I gave them ice cream I felt guilty about the calories, when they ate frozen yogurt they always got a stomach ache afterwards and it was always covered with lots of toppings. The shaved ice experience always left their mouth red and blue for two days. I had been a corporate lawyer for many years but had always entertained an entrepreneurial escape. One day I decided to try and create a dessert that I could gladly feed my kids and even enjoy myself.

What is it exactly, and what will we find at Sweet Crush?

Sweet Crush, our dairy product, is naturally flavored milk, shaved into silky ribbons of ice, or as the kids like to call it, shaved ice cream. Sweet Crush comes in classic flavors like vanilla, chocolate, coconut, peanut butter and espresso.

Pure Crush, our vegan non-dairy product, is fruit juice shaved into soft snowflakes.

Pure Crush comes in exotic flavors like strawberry lemonade, raspberry, mojito, passion fruit, lychee, and my favorite, grapefruit ginger.

Both products are truly all natural. That means none of the syrups, powders, and other artificial ingredients that you find in frozen yogurt and other shaved ice. You can actually pronounce the ingredients list. Both products have low calorie counts.

The customized store design is an integral part of the Sweet Crush experience. The design integrates a visual component into the customer’s culinary experience. The snowflake cutouts in the perforated walls perfectly match the snowflake design of the dessert. Add to that the alternating color scheme that shines through the cutouts and, voila!, we have a beautiful ice palace in which to enjoy a beautiful ice dessert.

How does it compare to frozen yogurt and can we expect to see more of this phenomenon?

It’s totally different. Sweet Crush almost has the richness of ice cream but without the calories, so it leaves you feeling lighter.

By contrast, frozen yogurt saves on calories but loses the taste and uses a ton of artificial ingredients. The frozen yogurt market is clearly saturated—“been there”, “done that”—and consumers that value health and quality are ready to try something new.

That’s right where Sweet Crush comes in.

What advice do you have for people wanting to start a new business?

Aim for the stars, that is the only way you will ever get there. You can always scale back but you have to start with your dream.

What is your proudest achievement?

When kids say ‘no thanks’ to toppings on their ice. Which is not to say my toppings aren’t good—they’re great! But when they walk out with the strawberry lemonade, and without the M&Ms, I truly feel that we accomplished something.

What are your favorite places in Brentwood?

For restaurants, I have to say Pizzicotto and Katsuya. Very different in style but both amazing. I can’t do without the farmers market on Gretna Green. I’ve always taken my kids on the weekend so it was only natural that Sweet Crush will get a stand to be part of it.

A singular figure in American art who experienced significant recognition and painful isolation during his life, Forrest Bess (1911-77) has recently become the subject of keen new interest. The first museum retrospective devoted to Bess in more than twenty years, Forrest Bess: Seeing Things Invisible, presents 50 of the artist’s visionary paintings dating from 1946 to 1970.

With sculpture, sound, film, and performance, British artist Mark Leckey explores the potential of the human imagination in his first solo U.S. museum presentation.

On Pleasure Bent is a new body of work in which Leckey attempts to form a kaleidoscopic memoir, assembling his past from the imagery that he believes conditioned him. The exhibition will include all new works, several being exhibited publicly for the first time.

Objects will include LED screens as well as cinema lobby style ‘standees’ and a trailer for a new video.

TILL 25 AUGUST Japan’s Modern Divide: The Photographs of Hiroshi Hamaya and Kansuke Yamamoto Throughout his career Hiroshi Hamaya pursued objective documentation, while Kansuke Yamamoto favored avantgarde forms of expression. These photographers embody two sides of modern Japanese life: the traditional and the forward looking, the rural and the urban, the Eastern and the Western.

Both artists grew up during a period of industrialization and experimentation which then ushered in a modern era (1926– 1989). Hamaya documented regional traditions and social issues, Yamamoto found inspiration in Surrealist art from Europe and produced innovative photographs that advanced the avant-garde movement in Japan. Their responses to modernity exemplified the divergent views of many Japanese people.

People who eat more fruits and vegetables, who exercise and who stimulate their brains with reading, puzzles and social interaction all can lower their risk of Alzheimer’s. But people who do everything “right” still often get the disease anyway.

Small said this study and the others show that, at the very least, it’s important to take prescribed drugs to control blood pressure.

The Benefits of Nostalgia

Most people report experiencing nostalgia at least once a week, and nearly half experience it three or four times a week. These reported bouts are often touched off by negative events and feelings of loneliness, but people say the “nostalgizing” — researchers distinguish it from reminiscing — helps them feel better.

To test these effects in the laboratory, Dr. Sedikides at Southampton University, England induced negative moods by having people read about a deadly disaster and take a personality test that supposedly revealed them to be exceptionally lonely. Sure enough, the people depressed about the disaster victims or worried about being lonely became more likely to wax nostalgic. And the strategy worked: They subsequently felt less depressed and less lonely.

Nostalgic stories aren’t simple exercises in cheeriness, though.

“Nostalgic stories often start badly, with some kind of problem, but then they tend to end well, thanks to help from someone close to you,” Dr. Sedikides says.

“So you end up with a stronger feeling of belonging and affiliation, and you become more generous toward others.”

A quick way to induce nostalgia is through music, which has become a favorite tool of researchers. An experiment in the Netherlands found that listening to songs made people feel not only nostalgic but also warmer physically.

The usefulness of nostalgia seems to vary with age, according to Erica Hepper, a psychologist at the University of Surrey in England. She and her colleagues have found that nostalgia levels tend to be high among young adults, then dip in middle age and rise again during old age.

“If you’re not neurotic or avoidant, I think you’ll benefit by nostalgizing two or maybe three times a week,” says Dr. Sedikides. “Experience it as a prized possession. We have it, and nobody can take it away from us. It’s our diamond.”

Johnny Depp Quitting?

Depp said, in a recent interview with the BBC, “I wouldn’t say that I’m dropping out any second, but I would say it’s probably not too far away.”

He said he’s considering pursuing “quieter things” and that acting is kind of “insane.”

The 50 year old actor explained, “At a certain point, you start thinking, and when you add up the amount of dialogue that you say per year, for example, and you realize that you’ve said written words more than you’ve actually had a chance to say your own words, you start thinking of that as a kind of insane option for a human being. So, are there quieter things that I wouldn’t mind doing? Yeah.”

His latest movie, The Lone Ranger, didn’t score many points with the critics, and it could be argued that his decision is based on that disappointment. However, he insists that he doesn’t care much for critics views, preferring the opinions of his kids who, biased though they may be, loved the movie.

As well as committing to a fifth Pirates of the Caribbean movie, Depp is currently filming a sci fi movie Transcendence, due for release next year.

Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, who is also the property owner of Nobu Malibu, is to team up with Nobu Matsuhisa for another project. In an interview with Haute Living, Matsuhisa reveals that he and Ellison are working on a Japanese hotel, which will commence construction this Fall.

Larry wants to try for a Japanese concept hotel. They say it’s going to start construction in September. He already has a design, but it won’t start being built until later this year.”

Young and idealistic, they had no idea that a few years later they’d all be in prison. This unique visual record, created by H.R. Haldeman, John Ehrlichman and Dwight Chapin, was seized by the FBI during the Watergate investigation, filed away and forgotten for almost 40 years. Renowned photographer Norman Seeff, whose life-size celebrity images were recently installed in the bar at Hotel Bel-Air, uses film and video to illustrate how he used his photo sessions as way to explore the inner dynamics of creativity, both personally and with his subjects.

The stunning images are the result of several photo sessions with the world’s most creative innovators and entertainers in the 1970s and ‘80s. “At these intimate lectures, I am honored and thrilled to be sharing what I have learned from my interaction with hundreds of renowned creators of all disciplines. We will screen film from my sessions revealing and demonstrating the dynamics of innovative creativity, in action,” said Seeff.

Make the dressing first.

In a high speed blender puree a cup (or two) of fresh watermelon Mix together the oil and vinegar, add the mustard and watermelon puree. Add more or less of the puree to your liking, remember you want a bit of a kick, dont want it to blend too much with the watermelon chunk.

Wisk the ingredients and pour into an air tight container and place in fridge until serving.

To assemble the salad: Start with a nice chunk of watermelon Next add the kiwi Top with microgreens (or mixed herb salad), pecans, and a few leaves of cilantro Finally, drizzle the dressing on top (use sparingly, don’t want it to overpower the watermelon) Try to get a bit of every ingredient in each bite to maximize your experience. Its lovely.
