Being alive
Being alive, now That is being thirsty That is the glare of the sunlight That is the sudden remembrance of a melody That is sneezing That is holding hands with you Being alive Being alive, now That is a miniskirt That is a planetarium That is Johann Strauss It is Picasso It is the Alps That is meeting everything beautiful and carefully shaking off the evil hidden away in it. Being alive Being alive, now That is being able to cry That is being able to laugh That is being able to be angry That is freedom...

SELECTED ACADEMIC PROJECTS
A mountain in a house A wall, a tree, and a mountain. Type : house renovation Taipei, Taiwan Area : 250sqm 2015
The site of the project is located in the suburb of Taipei. It is a small valley full of primitive and tropical plants. My family grew up here. An old family house renovation project profoundly influenced by Chinese Garden in Suzhou, China. The volumetric setting is prescribed by the existing structure, working routes and the site condition. The way Chinese garden involves movement fascinates me. People randomly stroll on and under the artificial landscape. Because of freedom between building form and natural element, imagination is provoked and experience the variety of spacial experience within a limited space. The original structure is covered with the dirt excavated for foundation. Create a small hill within the house, on one hand, it traces the topographical sweep of the site, on the other hand, it acts as a bridge, connecting the reading room and the living room. 40 year old tree on the site is preserved, the shadows of the trees make their marks on the wall, Breeze touches the leaves, branches gently wave. The moisture in the air reminds me, I am home.

project seeks to introduce a sense of freedom of movement while integrating with the carpet of various plants and colorful flowers. On volumetric idea, I was thinking of primitive hut sprawling through the wood, as if a herd of elephants crossing the jungle: elegant, firm, gentle, and ancient. Considering the seaside environment, wood structure was chosen instead of steel, structural wood plank together with 210mmx90mm wood beams form a shell system. Community center / library Half old, Half new. Type : community Tainan, Taiwan Area : 4500sqm 2013
Located on a site which was a old military base, the project is to regenerate the existing low-rise housing on the site and turn it into a community center and a library. To prevent the new build from posing a sudden impact on the low-rise residents nearby, the new building is designed to be surrounded by the remains of the old housing, which helps to maintain the scale and the living vibe of the area. I imagine it to be a nursery to the cityscape, gradually bring the people and the landscape together. All is done with the vision of a green and spacious cityscape, allowing people to inhabit and plants to prosperous. Designed for all, without pastiche or brutal shifts of scale.

House in a market Private public energy. Type : house Tainan, Taiwan Area : 100sqm 2012
Located in the heart of the oldest area in Tainan, Taiwan. The space has been the most vigorous trading area for hundreds years. The vernacular and dynamic use of space continues to fascinate me. In the morning, it is a bustling market and at night, the streets become an extension of private living room to the local residents. Public space of two extremes, same enchanting urban energy. This house aims to capture the vibe of the place. Serve as a device to broaden the senses of the owner. The elevated ground floor allows the vendors to display their product. At night, the space becomes a little plaza. The slope provides a smooth connection between home and the market, also serves as a playground for children. Kitchen is placed above, the louver provides a sense of interior yet remain intense interaction with the event under.I hope the house itself stands like it has alway been there. Pork steak sizzling, children running in and out, the old city creeps like a distant murmur, rain drizzles, console the tired people and the market altogether.
