4 ARTWORKS BY CHEN WEN HSI 4

Monumental in scale and rare in subject, a landscape ink on paper work, Blue Mountain, by Singapore pioneer artist Chen Wen Hsi, is proudly featured in this sale to present collectors with the spectacularity of Chen’s innovativeness on traditional Chinese painting. After it was bought directly from the artist, this painting disappeared from public view for decades, and is now finally back in the spotlight.

Acquired from one of the most prominent institutional collections in Singapore, this work takes up a major place in the series of the same name, standing together with another contemporaneous piece being collected by the Singapore Art Museum (SAM) in 2002 upon artist donation. Unlike Chen’s most representational subject of animal life-sketching that conveys exceptional fun and joy of meticulous observation, this series of works is dedicated to depicting the spirit and essence of nature on a macro horizon through the experiment on fusing various styles and concepts, created in about the last ten years of Chen’s life.

Existing literature and publications point to the Blue Mountain series showing the scenery in Hualian and painted about the same age when Chen was invited to make an exhibition in Taiwan; yet, the accurate year of creation remains uncertain, with experts dating it around the late 1970s to early 1980s. The artist intentionally concealed the date for whose belief that good paintings should be timeless. This series is considered one of his most influential lateperiod creations that we get to see the whole world of art (i.e. East and West) within one paper.

Chen maintained an open mind towards the revelation of individual characteristics through a wide range of expressions. Instead of completely abandoning the classical forms of Chinese ink painting, Blue Mountain synthesized his lifelong knowledge of various Western and Eastern concepts as one of the best testaments to a huge shift in his career. Combining dry-texture brushwork, cubism color planes, and blankness (liubai), the master artist adopted various approaches to capture the magnificence of the scene, presenting an abstraction of the mountain with great visual appeal to viewers. He also paid remarkable attention to the sense of mass and movement in order to showcase the floating air and flowing water, traditionally interpreted as the “spirit” of nature in literati paintings (Wenren Hua). By varying the thickness and angle of strokes, Chen masterfully managed to depict the contrast between the mist, waterfalls, and the steep mountain, giving us a feeling as if we could smell the natural fresh air and the incense of ink. In his own words, “There is poetry in painting, and painting in poetry”.

Impressing the world with his innovative fusion of Chinese and Western artistic ideas, the first-generation Singaporean master opened the door to a modern era of ink painting practice, which inspired a great number of new-generation artists in Southeast Asia. Remarkably, as one of the founding fathers of the notable Nanyang style, Chen explored the harmony and balance of tradition and modernity through thousands of experiments on brushwork, composition, color, and other elements of painting.

"Chen Wen Hsi was a Chinese-born Singaporean artist renowned for his significant contributions to the development and education of modern ink painting in Southeast Asia. Building on the historical tradition of Chinese ink techniques, Hsi innovatively incorporated Western styles, creating a unique artistic language that celebrated his cultural heritage while embracing the evolving modern landscape. His works often depict themes of nature and wildlife, featuring animal and flower motifs inspired by historical literati ink paintings. Characterized by bold brushwork filled with vitality and vibrant colors, Hsi's art conveys nuance through masterful gradations of tone and texture.

Among his notable works are three masterpieces— Squirrel, Ducks, and Pigeons—each distinct in their representation of natural themes. In Squirrel, a diverse range of textures is revealed through ink, as the softness of fur is contrasted with smooth stone. Steeped in hues of gray wash, the squirrels become one singular entity with the rock they are perched upon, conveying a thoughtful connection between the animals and their natural surroundings. The brushstrokes are rough and imprecise, yet decisive and thoughtful, evoking a harmonious and carefree atmosphere for the viewer. Ducks and Pigeons, both executed in finger painting technique, stand out for their sophisticated and elegant qualities despite the unconventional method. Hsi's adept use of this technique imbues the works with a tactile quality, enhancing the liveliness and charm of the depicted animals and foliage.

In all three paintings, Chen Wen Hsi's style combines bold brushwork, vibrant colors, and a sensitive, introspective regard for the natural world. His compositions not only celebrate the beauty of wildlife but also invite viewers to consider the precarious balance between humanity and the environment. Through his innovative use of traditional techniques and his dedication to artistic education, Hsi's legacy continues to inspire generations of artists, fostering a deeper understanding of cultural heritage and artistic expression in Singapore and beyond."

This evocative painting captures a quiet urban alleyway, leading the viewer’s eye towards a shadowed doorway where a solitary figure stands. The scene is rich with historical and cultural undertones, suggested by the ornate architectural feature above the door and the weathered walls showing signs of age and wear. The peeling paint and exposed bricks add a layer of authenticity and character to the setting.

Huang Kui is a Chinese contemporary artist whose works are constantly evolving, not conforming to a distinctive art style. However, his works are influenced by the common theme of exploring the nuances of identity, modernisation and social life. In this painting, he integrates a subdued colour palette with a pragmatic yet gritty atmosphere evoking a sense of uneasiness. The composition is disrupted by a drifting white, paper-like shape held by a hand in the sky, which adds a thought provoking aspect, encouraging viewers to question what is hidden or unspoken.

The flower crown of the young ethnic girl cascades like a waterfall, pouring down from the top of her head and being at one with her hair. Countless blooming flowers are intertwined, vibrant in colour and full of vitality, becoming the most eye-catching focal point of the entire painting in terms of both visual and spatial effects, which makes one reminisce about a summer sea of flowers. The artist deliberately magnified the volume of the flower headgear, even obscuring half of the figure’s face, turning it from a mere decorative element to the true subject matter of the work. It symbolizes the infinite vitality of the flowers, and further highlights the beauty of innocence and childishness, evoking a sense of joy and happiness. Under warm and rich colour palettes, the sound of the mouth harp floats as if it breaks out of the frame, resonating melodiously in the ears of viewers.

This present lot was painted during his golden age when his reputation grew internationally, showcasing his unique artistic representation of the Indonesian coastal environment and its intimate connection with local life. Young Balinese men feature heavily in the oeuvre of the artist. Yet this work, rendered in oil on board, presents a compelling yet enigmatic image of one such young man. The figure’s face is rounded yet from the eyes and the necklace he wears, the man exudes an aura of mystery. In this case, it appears the artist sketched the young man in quick stroke and mixed in dark colours to represent the man.

Coloured diamonds are prized for their rarity and captivating hues, created by unique conditions during their formation. Green diamonds owe their verdant tones to natural radiation exposure, which alters the diamond's atomic structure and imparts shades from mint to deep green. Pink diamonds gain their romantic blush tones through intense pressure causing crystal distortions, which produce colours ranging from soft pink to vibrant magenta. These natural processes make both green and pink diamonds exceptionally rare and highly valued, adding significant allure and investment value to fine jewellery collections worldwide.

ESTIMATE UPON REQUEST

Discovered in the early 2000s, Mozambique rubies quickly garnered acclaim for their vivid "pigeon blood red" hue, translucence, and impressive size, rivaling the legendary Burmese rubies. Beyond their beauty, Mozambique rubies are valued for being a sustainable and ethical source, especially as traditional sources like Myanmar face restrictions and scrutiny.

Rubies carry symbolic meanings of passion, protection, and vitality. They represent an enduring love and a valuable investment. Mozambique rubies continue to shape the global gemstone market, reintroducing the allure of fine rubies to a new generation of collectors.

This GRS Platinum Award 10.07 carat ruby further epitomizes the symbolism of love and vitality. The heart-shape, difficult to achieve while preserving the ruby's colour intensity and clarity, demands a skilled cutter to balance symmetry and brilliance, making high-quality heart-shaped rubies of this size and calibre incredibly scarce in the market and highly sought after. Simply put, a heart like this is truly one of a kind!
