North West Auctions were proud to host the stud reduction sale on behalf of the Willowsway Stud. The sale created much pre-sale interest with a packed-out ring and standing space only.

The sale peaked at 10,000gns for the much-admired Leaventhorpe Little Miss Lockdown, a two year old grey registered Shire Filly, by Hillmoor Double Trouble out of Leaventhorpe Lucky Lady to make approx. 17hh. The next call was 5,000gns for Willowsway Lady Vermillion, a stunning liver chestnut filly foal. This quality, strong, filly with beautiful limb and a very attractive head, full of proven bloodlines from the world,s leading studbook, with her dam being Solaris Achanenna. This was followed by 4600gns for Simply Rae a black 9year-old thoroughbred Mare by Acambaro out of a Beautiful Blue. She was sold with her filly foal Willowsway River Song sired by Solaris Buenno. This striking minimally marked filly is a definite contender for the dressage or show ring. At 4400gns was Amazing Grace a piebald traditional nine-year-old mare standing at a full up 14.2hh.

The August bank holiday sale of prime lambs at NWA Lancaster had an entry forward of 643 selling to an overall market average of 242p/kg. Properly finished lambs sold to a premium often in excess of the 250p/kg mark with leaner types being penalised. Heavy weight Texel lambs lead the way selling to £157 from J & E Nuttall, Kendal, £146 from H Birkett and Son, Overton and £141 from J lamb, Old Glasson. Plenty more pens of heavier weight lambs sold in excess of the £130 mark. The Suffolk trade peaked at £129 from G Riley, Bolton le Sands at 51kg.

Cast Sheep The bank holiday saw a sticker cast sheep trade with not all business’s fully operating in Lancaster this morning. The trade peaked at £160 for Texel tups from B & M Slater, Chipping. Texel x ewes peaked at £130 from Niyah Johnston, Bay Horse. Plenty more sold between £110 and £120. Mule cast sheep peaked at £100 numerous times from A & FM Bolland & Son, Quernmore, J & A Heaps, Barnacre and T & CM Kelsall, Chipping. Hill bred cheviot ewes sold to £80 from KM & KJ Curwen, Over Wyresdale.

The weekly sale of 1800 lambs saw a two tiers trade with well finished lambs which have been fed selling to a premium, with under finished lambs looking more suited to the store market. Today saw the belting Beltex show supported by the Northern Beltex Club; 1st – PD Pye, Marl House - £130 2nd – A Winn, High Underbrow Farm - £129 3rd – R H M&S Boyren, Hill Park - £124 Heavy lambs were keenly bid for all day, selling to a top of £151 for Texels from A Thompson, Southway. Suffolks sold to a top of £145 from JD&M Capstick, Bootle at 61kg. Beltex lambs sold to 308p/kg from A Winn, Burneside with the best end selling around the 300p/kg mark.

The largest entry of cull cows forward at NWA J36 sold to a fast and competitive trade with 82 cows achieving an overall market average of 167.5p/kg with two thirds of the entry being parlour type dairy cows. The top price today of 217.5p/kg was achieved by JC Walling & Son, Lyth for a Charolais x closely followed by NJ&S Wood, Windermere and J Twigge, Lindale both achieving 214.5p/kg. Heavy well fleshed beef cows regularly achieved 190p/kg-200p/kg with a keen interest of cows suitable for further finishing. Diary cows sold to a top price of 184.5p/kg for Montbeliarde from JJ&MA Parkinson, Kendal with other dairy cows to 169.5 from R&J Dodgson, Natland. The trade peaked at £1600 for the first prized shearling from Amanda Williams, St Helens with others from the home selling to £1300 with the run of five tups averaging £1070. The next call was £1500 for the second prized Texel tup shearling from J Woodburn & partners, Ulverston whom had an impressive pen of tups forward for the sale selling others to £1200, four to £1100 with the pen of fifteen averaging £1033.33. The annual consignment of powerful Texel shearlings from Sue Cunliffe, Grange over Sands peaked at £1000 four times with the consignment of fifty averaging £631. The consignment of Texel shearling tups from Thomas Ayrton, Cockerham twice sold to £1000. Also achieving the £1000 mark with Texel shearlings where the pen leaders from R & E Ladds, Kendal, RH & L Geldard, Gilpin Bridge, JT & J Kelsall, Clapham and WJ & VJ Case, Ulverston. There were plenty of quality shearling tups regularly selling between the eight hundred and one thousand pound marks. Aged Texel rams sold to a top of £850 from D & R Cornthwaite, Lockerbie. Texel rams lambs saw the consignment from RS & J Bradley & Son, Barnoldswick lead the way selling to £650, £550 £520 and £500. Beltex and Crossbred Rams A buoyant trade until the end in the Beltex and crossbred section with quality and power in demand. Topping the section and topping the sale at £2,000 was powerful great confirmation Texel x Charollais tup shearling from H Taylor, Knutsford with others from the same home selling to £1150. A cracking consignment of Beltex x tups from G Sowerby, Appleby peaked at £1,800 with others from the same home selling to £1300, £1200, £1100 (x2) and £1050 with the consignment of 21 averaging £915. The consignment of Charolais x Beltex tups from Messrs Wales, Carlisle peaked at £1,100. The consignment of powerful Charollais x Beltex lambs from JA & R Geldard & Sons, Golpin Bridge sold to £1,100 and £1,000 with the consignment of fifteen averaged £854. As seen in the Texel ring plenty of good tups selling in excess of the eight pound mark. Charollais Rams Charollais shearlings achieved a top price of £650 from MS&AP Lee, Arkholme who sold others at £600 with Messrs Wales, Carlisle achieving £580. All Charollais shearlings averaged £435.

A large number of lambs forward sold to £580 from J Stott, Kendal with others at £400 from S Cummings, Millom. All lambs averaged £381. MV Rams The sale of MV accredited rams saw IM Jaeban, Cockermouth sell Texel Shearlings to £800 with others at £600. Texel Lambs sold to £200 from the same vendor.

Several Dutch Spotted lambs forward sold to £380 from M Radford & E Robinson, Durham with other at £200 from B Barnes, Kirby Lonsdale. Suffolk Rams A bursting ringside of keen and eager bidders were treated to a wonderful, quality entry of Suffolks which sold to a fast and competitive trade. Weanlings led the way from EW&R Towers, Hornby selling British Blue bulls to £470 and £415 with British Blue heifers to £340. British Blue weanlings from G&ME Woodhouse & Son, Ellel sold to £445. Calves on milk continue to meet slight resistance due to the spiralling costs of milk powder, British Blue heifers peaked at £295 from Wallbank Farms with bulls to £290 from Barker Farms, Carnforth. Dairy calves saw Fleckvieh weanlings to £250 twice and £240 from EW&R Towers, Hornby with Black and White weanlings to £250 from G&ME Woodhouse & Son, Ellel.

The weekly sale of OTM cattle at Lancaster had an increased entry of 110 forward selling to a buoyant market averaged of 171p/kg. OTM steers led the way selling to 234.5p/kg or £1648 from H Birkett & Son, Overton with a Simmental. Friesian bullocks sold to 219.5p/kg or £1490 from DR Preston, Caton with other from the same good home to 217.5p/kg. OTM Limousin heifers sold to 227.5p/kg from RG&H Preece, Roeburndale West. Dairy heifers peaked at 224.5p/kg from SR&PA Thompson, Sedbergh with a Fleckvieh. Black and White OTM heifers peaking at £1401 from R&A Jollys, Cabus. Beef cows today peaked at 217.5p/kg or a whopping £2157 for a Charolais cow from GR Bargh & Co, Caton. This was followed by Charolais cast steers to £1928 from I Holden, Thornton with a Hereford bull selling to £1881 from JE&BR Bucker, Manchester. Dairy cows sold to £1574 from H&A Stephenson, Tunstall followed by £1383 from MJ Fell, Whittington with others to £1366 from D Fox & Co, Bay Horse. Meated dairy cows sold between 185-190p/kg.

Store Cattle They trade remains very buoyant for store cattle at Lancaster with all forward averaging an impressive £1247. The sale peaked at £1760 for a pair of Charolais heifers from R&EA Gardner, Briggsteer. This was followed by a pen of four Aberdeen Angus heifers selling to £1550 from J Tattersall, Leyland. The bullock trade peaked at £1680 for a pen of three Angus’s from JS Clarke & Sons, Catforth. Followed by Simmentals to £1640 from H Morgan, Stalmine and Angus’s to £1580 from H Birkett & Son, Overton who also sold Limousins to £1490. Simmental bullocks sold to £1520 from T&M Halhead, Priest Hutton. An abundance of strong cattle sold in the region of fourteen hundred pounds. British Friesian bullocks peaked at £1310 from EE Thornton & Son, Heaton with Oxcliffe. Followed by Fleckvieh to over thirteen hundred from MJ Waller, Lupton.
