Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Prime Hoggs, Cast Sheep & Sheep with Lambs. Monday 3rd March 2025.

Prime Hoggs

In buyer specification hoggs continued to sell at the recent high prices, with an SQQ of 344p/kg achieved today. JE Parkinson & Son, Quernmore presented another well sort after consignment of Beltex cross hoggs selling to 417p/kg, with other pens at 409p/kg twice from the same home and 393p/kg from KA Purtill, Wigan. Other well finished continental standard weight hoggs were regularly 350p/kg to 380p/kg. Several pens of lighter weight hoggs met buyers approval, selling to 368p/kg for Texel cross from M&L Preece, Kirkby Lonsdale. Other grass finished light weight hill bred hoggs were 310p/kg to 330p/kg. Heavy weight hoggs sold to 354p/kg for continental hoggs from Cardwell Farms, Stalmine. Other were generally 310p/kg to 320p/kg. Today’s sale topped at £184 for continental hoggs from Cardwell Farms, Stalmine with Texel cross to £180 from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe and Beltex £176 from JE Parkinson & Son, Quernmore. Other standard weight hoggs were regularly £144 to £160. Pure hill bred hoggs sold to £171 for Cheviots, £153 Gritstones and £140 for Rough Fells.

A full row of cull ewes, saw a shortage of the best strongest sorts this week, those few which were forward sold to £216 for a pen of Charolais’s from JA Lambert, Out Rawcliffe who sold others at £204. The best first cross ewes sold to £187 from the same home, with Texel cross £174 from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Others were £155 to £170, mediums £140 to £152, with the leaner end £120 to £135. The strongest Mules sold to £168 from P Metcalfe, Quernmore with others £140 to £150 and mediums £125 to £135. Pure hill ewes sold to £142 for Cheviots from Riverside Cottage, with Lonks to £136 from E Preece, Kirkby Lonsdale and Lleyn £108. Only a handful of horned ewes forward, being the leaner end selling to £70. Cull rams sold to £160 for continental with Swaledale’s to £98.

Sheep with Lambs at Foot

The opening sale of sheep with lambs at foot was greeted by an eager ringside of buyers keen to fill trailers, with many leaving empty hander or unable to fulfil orders.

Today’s sale topped at £350 (£175 per life) for a Texel cross shearling with Beltex cross lamb from J Wills, Lancaster who sold similar families to £325 and two shears with twins to £330. A ring full of aged Mule ewes with twin Texel lambs from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe sold at £365. Older Cheviot Mule ewes with twin Texel lambs sold to £360 from P Metcalfe, Quernmore who also sold singles at £285.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Prime Hoggs & Cast Sheep, Tuesday 4th March 2025.

Prime Hoggs- In spec sheep fly Handy weight sheep met a fantastic trade from minute one, with many even dearer than last week. The heavier end however were more difficult going in comparison, although the healthy ringside of buyers ensured plenty of demand and well fed types were still nice to sell. A large number of heavy sheep and a lack of quality around saw the SQQ average settle at 339p/kg. 46kg Texels from M&YS Barker, Halton sold to 404.3p/kg. RF Morphet, Halton was just slightly behind at 392.9p/kg for a pair at 42kg. Lighter 33kg hoggs sold to 369.7p/kg for a pen of three from RT Colbear, Appleby. The same home had a pen of nine at 31kg hoggs which achieved 377.5p/kg. A pair of heavies hit £203 from JB Airey, Kendal. Seven Texels sold to £194 from N Barker, Burton in Kendal. Cheviots topped at £193 from D Clark, Milnthorpe. More sheep are required next week to meet buyer’s demand.

Cast Sheep

A wide variety of ewes on offer today, as farmers look to off load passengers. Several stronger end ewes forward sold to £235 for a Charollais cross from FE&CM Robinson, Milnthorpe with other pens of Texels and Suffolks £200 to £225. First cross were £170 to £200, with mediums £150 to £168 and leaner framed ewes £120 to £140.

Mules broke the £200 barrier, topping at £208 for a Cheviot Mule from J Woodburn & Partners, Ulverston who sold North Country Mules at £198. Other stronger pens were £180 plus, with mediums £140 to £165. Pure hill ewes sold to £180 for Cheviots, £170 Rough Fells, Swaledales £142, Horned £116, Herdwick £114 and SBF £110. 35 cull rams were forward with the stronger continentals £180 to £215, topping at £225. Mediums were £140 to £160 and the hard worked rams £120 to £135. Hill rams sold to £164 for Cheviots, with other £110 to £140 and smaller horned rams £95 to £105.

Bull calves were nothing short of phenomenal today, with new highs of £810 achieved for a British Blue from E&L Fawcett, Morpeth who made the worth while trip from the North East this morning selling a further two to £800. £805 was paid for a Charolais from JH Towers & Son, Tunstall with two more achieving £800 today for Charolais from Messrs Sowerby, Appleby and for an Aberdeen Angus cross from SW&K Metcalf, Whittingham. A further seventeen bulls sold over £700, with younger types selling to £640 for a five week olds from HJ Robinson, Milnthorpe. Dairy calves sold to £600 for a Fleckvieh from Messrs Sowerby, Appleby with black and whites to £460 from J&B Morley, Appleby. Heifer trade was not far behind, selling to £740 for an Aberdeen Angus cross from SW&K Metcalf, Whittingham. British Blue cross from E&L Fawcett, Morpeth sold to £720 and £700, with three more at £700 from CR Dickinson, Thurnham, JH Towers & Son, Tunstall and Messrs Sowerby, Appleby. Younger sorts sold to £500 for British Blues from DR&C Galbraith, Grayrigg at just five weeks old. A consignment of two to three week old black and white heifer calves from G&F Barnes, Withgill sold to £300, with others at £280 x3.

Stirks soar to £1700 at NWA J36

Another packed ringside of both new and existing buyers were in attendance, which saw all stirks sell to a trade with a spring in its step, with the sun in the sky and the arrival of spring. The trade for steers saw a top price of £1700 for a Hereford cross from P Metcalfe, Quernmore. An eye catching trio of ten month old Charolais cross steers from J Turnball, Meathop sold at £1560. Other younger steers sold at £1230 for seven month old Limousin cross from JH Barker & Son, Haverthwaite. Several consignments of well reared dairy bred steers sold to £1230 for eight month old Simmental cross from H Ellison, Ulverston who also sold British Blue cross at £1210. Native sired steers sold to £1150 for eleven month old Aberdeen Angus cross, with five month old Aberdeen Angus cross £800 from Messrs Young, Lindal. Twelve month old black and white steers from Bellart Howe Farm, Witherslack sold at £900 with seven month old £600 from Messrs Wood, Pennington. Heifers sold to £1340 for a twelve month old Charolais cross from J Turnball, Meathop with other younger suckler bred heifers £1100 to £1200, to include four month old Charolais cross from R&BJ Cleasby, Broughton in Furness selling at £1100. Dairy bred heifers sold to £1320 for Charolais cross from S Ashcroft, Euxton with other stronger end continentals £1100 to £1250. Native sired heifers sold to £1100 for ten month old Aberdeen Angus cross from HL&JA Veitch, Kirkby Stephen with others at

£1050 from AT Bainbridge, Kirkby Stephen. Younger heifers sold to £710 for an Aberdeen Angus cross (six months old) from Messrs Young, Lindale.

Bull stirks sold to £1300 for four month old Charolais cross from R&BJ Cleasby, Broughton in Furness with other younger suckler bull calves selling to £1200 for Limousin cross from Slinger and Eaton, Sedbergh. Well reared dairy bred bulls sold to £1050 for six month old Simmental and British Blue cross, with others regularly £900 to £1000. Diary bulls sold to £860 for Black and Whites from Messrs Wood, Pennington. Store Cattle- Get your kicks at Junction 36.

The all singing and all dancing store cattle trade continues to get a tune our of buyers from far and wide. Bulls set the day off at top volume with JA&J Harper, Killington topping the charts at £2480. This was music to the ears of all the vendors, as the high octave prices played out from the first note to the last.

Bulls topped at £2480 from Messrs Harper for a twelve month old Limousin. A pen of three British Blue bulls sold to £2100 from S Bosworth, Burnley. The same home had another at £1900. Steers reached £2120 for a pair at sixteen month olds from HR&KA Hodgson, Carnforth. A single bullock from S Proctor, Selside sold to £2100 from the same good home. Hereford bullocks hit £2040 from M Moorhouse, Grange Over Sands. Aberdeen Angus heifers got to £2080 from JE Wightman, Lupton. A Clark & Johnson, Windermere were not far behind with once again some excellent Limousin heifers topping at £2060. A ten month old British Blue heifer sold to £2060 from W Heap, Chorley. OTM Cattle

Another fast trade for all classes and types with an overall market average of 231p/kg. Top of the beef cows today was an Aberdeen Angus cross from RJ Walling, Windermere selling at 264p/kg with a Limousin cross from JH Barker & Son, Haversham achieving 259p/kg, as did a South Devon from AT Threlkeld, Satterthwaite. Other heavier beef cows were generally 220p/kg to 245p/kg, with top grossing being a South Devon from AT Threlkeld totalling £2283.

Dairy culls sold to 239p/kg for a Black and White from AE Luffman, Howgill with other better end parlour types 210p/kg to 225p/kg, with the harder worked 170p/kg to 195p/kg. Top grossing was a Black and White from Strickland Hill Farming, Witherslack selling for £1715.

OTM heifers sold to 309p/kg and £1884 for a black and white from JG&BJ Escolme, Killington with steers selling to 349p/kg and £2449 for a British Blue cross from JW Robinson & Son, Farleton. Cull bulls sold to 259p/kg for a Limousin from CI Briggs, Ambleside and £2708 for a beef Shorthorn from M Robinson, Stainton.

Rearing calves sold to £800 for a British Blue bull from G&ME Woodhouse, Ellel with Aberdeen Angus cross sell to £780 from IT Richarson, Catforth, others from this run sold to £760. Hereford bulls sold to £740 from TE&MM Kidd, Ellel with younger British Blues to £700 from JP&C Robson, Brock. Black and Whites sold to £485 from JR Newsham, Conder Green. Heifer calves sold to £680 for Aberdeen Angus cross from IT Richardson, Catforth with other Aberdeen Angus from this good home along with Herefords from TE&MM Kidd, Ellel achieving £670. Younger sorts sold to £560 for British Blues from JP&C Robson, Brock with Charolais to £550 from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale. Weaned stirks sold to £900 for a pair of British Blue bulls from TD&A Gardner, Great Eccleston with Aberdeen Angus to £800 from Raby Farm, Preesall. Weaned heifers sold to £780 for Aberdeen Angus cross again from Raby Farms, with three to five month old British Blues heifers to £750 from Messrs Threlkeld, Milnthorpe.

Just when you think the store cattle trade couldn’t get any better, today we’ve seen exactly that! Out of a catalogued entry of 213 stores, over 60% passed the £2000 mark, with new highs of £2880 achieved.

Bullocks were quite phenomenal today with a top price of £2880 paid for an Aberdeen Angus cross from R&DM Rossall, Pilling who also sold British Blues to £2680. EE Thornton & Son, Heaton sold a Charolais to £2580, whist Limousin sold to £2500 from H Chapman & Son, Middleton. A further eighteen bollocks sold over £2400. Black and White bullocks sold to £2180 for a trio from EE Thornton, Heaton with MRI’s to £2020 from Barlow Bros, Preston. Heifers were not far behind selling to £2500 for a British Blue from R&DM Rossall, Pilling with not one but four very nice Limousins from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof selling to £2300. Charolais sold to £2220 from WA Hodgson, Whinfell with Aberdeen Angus cross selling to the same price on six occasions for T&E Garlick, Freckleton. A further thirty eight heifers broke the £2000 barrier, with trade quite scintillating.

OTM Cattle

The weekly sale of OTM cattle saw a few less about then previous weeks, with a pleasing average of 263p/kg. Cattle broke the £3000 barrier with PJ&ES Rogerson, Appleby selling an OTM bull at £3199.25 or 329.5p/kg.

Cast cows saw a top price per head of £2615.75 from WG Farms, Cockerham for an Aberdeen Angus cross, with other beef OTM cows from BD&PM Gill & Son, Ingleton at 364.5p/kg or £2303 for a Bazadaise. Plenty more OTM beef cattle were over the 300p/kg mark.

Dairy bred OTM cows topped out at £2068 or 264.5p/kg from J Huddleston, Brookhouse with other Friesian bred OTM’s at 259.5p/kg from Barker Farms, Warton. Any number of OTM Friesian cows were around the 240p/kg to 250p/kg mark.

OTM heifers saw an average of 300p/kg, topping at 349.5p/kg or £1999 from TJ Robinson, Milnthorpe for an Aberdeen Angus. Frisian heifers topped at £2135 or 309p/kg from Pickervance Farms, Roseacre with others £1872 or 309p/kg from AT Burrow, Gressingham.

No let up in the trade for OTM steers, with an average of 290p/kg achieved. Topping at £2304 or 334.5p/kg for a Friesian from AT Burrow, Gressingham who also had a Limousin cast steer to 364.5p/kg or £2077. Other beef bred OTM steers achieved 354.5p/kg from TJ Robinson, Milnthorpe for an Aberdeen Angus.
