Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep, Monday 28th November 2022.

Prime Lambs

A bumper entry of prime lambs was forward today at Lancaster with 1173 selling to a strong trade from start to finish. An overall market average of 245p/kg achieve which included a large number of upland bred lambs.

Quality lambs led the way today, as 47kg Beltex lambs sold to £158 or 336p/kg from TM Townley, Over Wyresdale. Heavy weight lambs continue to sell to a premium at Lancaster, peaking at £153 for Suffolks from Ivan Slater, Claughton on Brock. Heavy weight Texel from R&DL Cornthwaite, Nateby sold to £149 and £144 with a consignment of heavy weight lambs from Sam Ayrton, Thurnham selling Texels to £148 and Suffolks to £147 and £145. Also breaking the £140 barrier at £142 was J&E Nuttall, Old Hutton followed by £141 from P&ME Higginson, Pilling. Plenty more pens sold in the mid to late one hundred and thirties. A larger number of upland lambs on the market today saw heavy weights in big demand, peaking at £137 for Mashams from WI&A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale. 52kg Mules sold to £130 and £129 from JR&LA Capstick, Killington with other leading priced for Mules being £126 from Ivan Slater, Claughton on Brock followed by 51kg Mules to £125 from JS&S Atkinson, Scorton and WI&A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale. Well fleshed handy weighted lambs continue to regularly selling between 250-270p/kg

Cast Sheep

Once again just over the one hundred cast sheep were forward, selling to a sharper trade. Leading the way was Beltex x ewes selling to £143 from R&DL Cornthwaite, Nateby. A consignment of Texel x ewes sold to £141 and £131 from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof followed by £128 and £127 from J Bargh, Heaton with Oxcliffe and £128 from R&B Parker, Killington with plenty more around the £120 mark. Mule ewes sold to £94 from KA Purtill, Wigan followed by £94 from T&L Kirkham, Eccleston. Horned ewes peaked at £90 from A Brown, Littledale followed by £81 for Scotch Black Faces from George Blacklidge, Wigan.

Prime Lambs

The weekly sale of prime lambs had an entry of 1450 forward selling to an overall market average of 247p/kg. All specifications of lambs eagerly bid for at J36 with buyers looking to purchase lambs well finished. Once again heavy weight lambs continue to be very eagerly bid for a J36. The trade peaked at £157 for Texel’s from WT Whitaker & Son, Nether Kellet with other heavy weight Texels to £153 from EJ & P Burrow, Storth, £152.50 from TA Teasdale, Newton in Cartmel and £149 from FI & ME Little, Barrow Green. Charollais heavy lambs topped at £155 from TA Teasdale, Newton in Cartmel with heavy weight continentals to £152 from WB Kellet, Cockerham. Plenty more pens of heavy weight continental lambs selling in the region of £140. Upland heavy weight lambs continue to be in demand selling to a top of £143 from a Leicester from EW & JR Parkinson, Dunsop Bridge. Cheviots at 55kg peaked at £138 from Stockdale Farms, Sedbergh. Mules sold to a top of £133 for a pen of 29 lambs weighing 53kg from EW & JR Parkinson, Dunsop Bridge followed by 49kg mules to £125 from FI & ME Little, Barrow Green and £124 from WJ & I France & Son, Chipping. Handy weighted in specification lambs between 42-47kg well finished well fleshed continental lambs regularly selling in the region of 250p/kg with better quality lambs selling often between 255-270p/kg with best types selling in excess of that.

Light weight export lambs starting to be required with light continental lambs between 32-36kg which are well finished trading between 240 and 250p/kg. if you have lightweight lambs to market, please contact a member of the team.

Cast Sheep

720 ewes forward today at J36. With trade up for all types many more numbers easier sold to a full ring side of buyers. Texel ewes sold to a top of £180 from RG&L Potter, Penrith. With others selling to £176 from J&C Airey, Little Urswick. Regular away the best Texel ewes were selling between to £150-£170 mark. Mule ewe trade increased on the week with the best selling to £134 from AW Crowe, Witherslack. Strong fleshed mule ewes were regular selling over the £110 mark. Hill ewes sold to a top of £100 for Rough Fells from WJ Dawson, Sedbergh. A large number of Swaledale ewes forward, these saw a top of £88 for a full pen from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe. With others selling to £87 from R Lawrence, Grange over Sands. Fit, Strong pens of Swaledale ewes were regular selling to the £75-£80 mark. Herdwick ewes sold to a top of £75 from AJ&L Birkett, Little Langdale.

Store Lambs

A catalogue entry of 3500 store lambs sold to the usual full ring side of buyers. Strong store lambs keenly bid with longer term type lambs still looking well sold. A large proportion of the lambs were weathered followed on from a fortnight of poor weather. The trade top at £114 for Beltex x lambs from J Holme & Son, Ulverston. Ten pens of lambs sold well over the £100 mark with RJ&OB Simpson, Longsleddale selling a pen of 20 Texels to £105 with other pens from the same home to £99. £104 was achieved by both W&J Penny, Kirkby in Furness and PG Thornton, Scorton followed by £102 from CI Briggs, Ambleside and £100 from GT Hodgson, Witherslack. Suffolk lambs sold to a top of £98 from JH Atkinson & Partners, Selside followed by other Suffolks to £97 from DM Bargh, Heaton. Mashams peaked at £93 from C Head, Kendal with Mules peaking at £91 from Mike and Neil Strickland, Whinfell. Other Mules sold to £99 from RM&D Dixon, Longsleddale. A pen Swaledale lambs topped at horned section at £58.50 from JF&C Benson, Ambleside.

Dairy Cattle

A lighter show of dairy cattle ahead of the Christmas prize show and sale in a fortnight, saw new calved Friesian type heifers sell to £1920 from R&K Jenkinson, Pilling who also sold cross bred at £1500. The Christmas prize show and sale will take place on Friday 16th December, please advise the office of entries by Monday 12th December.

Calves & Weanlings

The calve trade remains very similar with young beef calves looking very buyable, despite the cost of rearing. Weanlings continue to be in big demand and eagerly bid for with the consignment of 4-5 month old British Blues from J&A Sheering, Quernmore selling bulls to £555 and heifers to £510. This was followed by 3 month old bulls from Jones Sandvilla, Cockerham selling to £480. The consignment of 3 month old Aberdeen Angus and Charolais from J&G Thornley, Kirkham sold Angus’s to £360 and £345 with Charolais to £350. Ten week old Aberdeen Angus bull calves sold to £325 from JM&MH France & Son, Littledale. This was followed by 7 week old British Blue bulls to £320 from GH Sanderson & Family, Catforth and £280 for five week old British Blue bulls from HJ Robinson, Milnthorpe.

Heifer Calves Top Prices: British Blue: £510 Knotts Farm, £165 North Farm, £165 Elm Tree Farm, £160 Blackleach House Farm. Charolais: £250 Derby Lodge Farm. Angus: £140 Derby Lodge Farm, £110 Elm Tree Farm.

Bull Calves Top Prices: British Blue: £555 Knotts Farm, £480 Sandvilla, £320 Blackleach House Farm, £280 Elm Tree Farm. Angus: £360, £345 Derby Lodge Farm, £325 Newhouse Farm. Charolais: £350 Derby Lodge Farm. Hereford: £170 Sandvilla.

Store Cattle

A sharper trade in the store cattle ring with in excess of 200 forward which saw all steers average £1207 and heifers average £1174. Leading the way was a pen of three British Blue bullocks selling to £1700 from K&DE Woodhouse, Ellel. Other British Blue bullocks sold to £1570 from P Lawrenson & Son, Chorley. Heifers were in strong demand which saw a pen of three British Blues to £1560 for V&S Fitzell, Much Poole with bullocks from the same home to £1520. Native bullocks always meet plenty of demand in Lancaster with Herefords peaking at £1500 from M Shepherd & Son, Pilling and Aberdeen Angus heifers to £1490 from WJ&L Barker, Arkholme whom also sold Charolais heifers to £1480. Also achieving £1480 was a pen of four British Blue heifers from K&DE Woodhouse, Ellel, at the same money was a Shorthorn steer from Cowell & Moore, Woodplumpton. Short keep cattle was definitely a sharper trade at Lancaster. Dairy bred cattle saw Fleckvieh heifers sell to £1380 from EW&R Towers, Hornby with Friesian and Ayrshire bullocks to £1300 from Cowell and Moore, followed by £1280 from M Shepherd & Son, Pilling and £1250 from EE Thornton & Son, Heaton. Next weeks sale will include the annual Christmas Show with classes for best pair of heifers and best pair of bullocks and the champion pair receiving the T Owen memorial trophy. There will also be a special prize for the best pair of home bred store cattle.

It was great to have a larger number of cast cows forward with 129 on the market, selling to a averaged of 165p/kg or £1065 a head. OTM Hereford steers sold to a top of 221.5p/kg from DH&M Kellett & Sons, Thurnham with OTM steers selling Black and Whites to £1531 from A Kirkby & Co, Pilling, British Blues to £1501.65 from N Bretherton, Leyland followed by £1501.50 from T Asden, Eccleston. Black and White feeding heifers sold to 217.5p/kg or £1305 from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe followed by 211.5p/kg or £1304 from J Burrow & Son, Barton.

Cows peaked at 197.5p/kg for Montbeliardes from WR&CM Lawrenson, Winmarleigh with Limousin cows to 194.5p/kg from D&DW Prickett, Farlton. Beef cows sold to a top of £1661 and £1608 from E&M Fairhurst, Austwick. Dairy cows sold to £1441 from WR&CM Lawrenson followed by £1437 from WE&G Hewitt & Sons, Cockerham, £1419 from H&A Stephenson, Tunstall with plenty more dairy cows in the late £1300’s.
