Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep. Fortnightly Sale of Store Hoggs, Monday 27th February 2023.
Prime Hoggs
Monday mornings at Lancaster now has auctioneer Bradley Thompson captaining the ship, with a pleasing show of 635 hoggs were put before eight active buyers, all keen to fulfil their Monday morning orders. Light weight and export hoggs were good to sell and keenly sort after, with heavy hoggs being a bid or two sharper on the week. A respectable overall market average of 233p/kg was achieved for a very mixed show of hoggs with once again a third of the sale being upland bred.
The sale topped at £155 for heavy Texels from J France, Pilling with other heavy Texel hoggs selling to £151 from GH Sanderson & Family, Catforth. Beltex hoggs sold to £140 from EW&JR Parkinson, Dunsop Bridge. Numerous pens of Beltex hoggs sold over 300p/kg, topping at 305p/kg from KA Purtill, Wigan. The keenest interest was shown in lightweight meated hoggs with 38kg Texel hoggs from AR&BJ Thompson, Selside selling to £115. Light weight hoggs were regularly selling at 245p/kg-260p/kg depending on quality. Upland lambs sold to a top of £130 for Masham hoggs from WI&A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale. 50kg Mules sold to £116 from W&A Cornall, Barnacre with the same home selling Swaledale hoggs to £100. Store Hoggs
The closing sale of the season for store hoggs at Lancaster saw Texels sell to £83 from PG Thornton, Scorton with Suffolks selling to £81 from Pilling Hall, Pilling. A pleasing overall average of £74 was achieved.

Cast Sheep
The cast sheep trade goes up another level at Lancaster, with pure bred Texels selling to £170 from MP&P Berry, Stalmine. Texel x ewes sold to £131 from J Bargh & Son, Heaton. Strong Masham ewes sold to £126 from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe with Mules topping at £125 from A&FM Bolland & Sons, Ellel. Hill sheep topped at £124 for a Cheviot from P Prickett, Hutton Roof. Dalesbred sold to £101 from T&CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping with a full pen of Swaledales selling to £100 from W&A Cornall, Barnacre.
Next week sees the opening sale of sheep with lambs at foot, which will take place at approximately 12 noon following cast sheep. Please advise the office of entries.

Pigs
Pigs fly to £228 at NWA J36!
Pigs really do fly at North West Auctions Junction 36, with one of the largest crowds of buyers seen at North West Auctions representing retails, wholesale and catering customers. An outstanding consignment of twelve Large White x gilts and hogs from JR&M Ayrton, Cockerham stole the headlines selling to £228 for a pen of three gilts with hogs selling to £215 and others at £208. Close behind at £198 was a pair of heavy weight Large White x gilts from regular supporter Wendy Stamper who travels from Chipping. Prime boars sold to £150 for Large Black x Duroc’s again from Wendy Stamper. Lighter weight pigs sold to £158 for Large White x gilts from JR&M Ayrton and £135 for free range Pietrain x gilts from J Hadwin, Broughton in Furness.
Prime gilts sold to 229p/kg with others at 224p/kg and 219p/kg. Other prime pigs were regularly selling at 165p/kg - 185p/kg, with an overall market average of 178p/kg achieved.
The next sale of pigs is on Tuesday 14th March with buyers keen to attend. We can easily handle 60 - 80 prime pigs at each sale and enquires are also being made for weaners and stores.
Prime Hoggs
Once again, a wide range of hoggs were forward, ranging from 28kg to 68kg with buyers showing the keenest interest in well finished hoggs to fulfil orders. Heavy weight hoggs sold to £140 for Texel x Mules from R&EA Gardner, Briggsteer with other heavy weights generally selling at £120 to £130. Standard weight hoggs sold to £117 for Texel x from FI&ME Little, Barrows Green with others at £113 from G Hargreaves, Scotforth. Light weight hoggs saw a sharp rise selling to £96 for Beltex x from G Hargreaves, Scotforth with others also achieving £96 from K Little & D McClure, Carmel. Over half the entry again being hill bred hoggs, selling to £110 for Cheviots from Stockdale Farms, Sedbergh with Mules selling to £111 from R&PE Hargreaves & Son, Burnley and Mashams £110 from A Guy, Ambleside. Dalesbreds sold to £107 from R Capstick & Son, Ingleton, Herdwicks to
£98 from MW&PA Rollason, Meathop and Scotch Black Face to £96 from GM&A Jackson, Little Eccleston. Beltex hoggs from GM&A Jackson, Little Eccleston sold to 268p/kg with others at 262p/kg from BH Bainbridge and 260p/kg from Messrs Chaplin, Ulverston. Well finished hoggs were generally achieving 225p/kg-240p/kg, with the leaner grass fed hoggs 210p/kg-220p/kg.

440 ewes were forward with trade being sharper again on the week. Pure bred Texel ewes led the way selling to £172 from J Woodburn & Partners, Ulverston with other Texel ewes selling to £148 from D&S Robinson, Beckside. Suffolk ewes sold to £137 from J Woodburn & Partners, Ulverston who sold other full pens to £136. Meaty Continental bred ewes were regularly selling at the £120 to £130 mark. Mule ewes peaked at £124 from JBL&I Ellis, New Hutton with other full pens selling to £122 from J Woodburn & Partners, Ulverston with the best Mule ewes regularly selling at £110 plus, medium fit Mule ewes were £95 to £100. Hill ewes topped at £142 for Cheviots from J Woodburn & Partners, Ulverston with other Cheviots selling to £98 from J&A Smales, Ingleton. Rough Fells sold to a top of £124 from S&W Dickinson, Tebay with other Rough Fells to £103 from JA Law, Carnforth. Calves & Stirks
An entry of 93 calves sold to a competitive trade with those of a weanable age easier to sell than younger calves that would require milk, this purely being a reflection of current rearing costs. Weaned Aberdeen Angus bull calves from RF&C Hodgson, Pennington sold to £530 and £510, with others at £440 from W&S Airey, Whittington. Older rearing calves sold to £370 for a British Blue x bull from JW&TE Shape Ltd, Lyth who sold others at £350 and £340. The younger end of calves sold to £290 for a British Blue x bulls from A Pickthall, New Hutton and FB Dunning & Son, Houghton with others at £280 from HJ Robinson & son, Preston Patrick. Other young rearing bull calves generally sold between £180 and £220, depending on breed and quality. Weaned heifer calves sold to £460, £450 and £430 for Aberdeen Angus x from RF&C Hodgson, Pennington. Weanable heifers sold to £300 for Aberdeen Angus x from W&S Airey, Whittington. Younger rearing heifer calves sold to £250 for British Blue x from JT&T Sharpe Ltd, Lyth with others generally selling at £200 to £250, with the very youngest £150 to £180.
A smaller entry of 31 stirks were forward today, ahead of the catalogue entry of 625 store cattle. Stirks sold to a top price of £1000 from S Whitehead, Middleton who showed a trio of ten month old Limousin x bulls. All other stirks forward today ranged from four to six month old with Aberdeen Angus x steers selling to £590 from Colby Farm Ltd, Appleby who also sold Limousin x at £560. Whitebred Shorthorns sold to £500 from G Malpass, Dent. Heifer stirks sold to £800 for Limousin x from Brown Bros, Dent who sold another British Blue x and Limousin x to £780. First cross British Blue heifers from F&TE Park, Crook sold to £630 and £610. Younger heifer stirks from Colby Farms Ltd, Appleby sold to £520 for British Blue.

Beef Breeding
A small entry of beef breeding cattle which saw a Limousin x cow with a month old bull calf at foot achieving £2000 from JD&DJ Hutchinson, Sedbergh. Older cows with heifer calves at foot sold to £1600 from C Slater, Witherslack. In-calf heifers sold to £1500 for a Limousin x from AP&R Crowe, Rusland who sold others at £1480.
Store Cattle
The pre sale show was kindly sponsored by MB Nutrition and Armstrong Watson accountants with the judging in the capable hands of Mr James Crichton. The show was won by noted local breeders Martin and Julie Winn, Burneside showing a home bred 10 month old British Blue x heifer. Mr Crichton awarded the results as followed;

A catalogue entry of 623 store cattle were put before a packed ringside of new and returning customers, ensuring a blistering trade throughout the day. North West Auctions very own Robyn Allen topped the sale today selling her home bred Limousin bullock at £1680, with £1660 achieved for Charolais bullocks from RJ&R Holden, Silecroft who also sold Shorthorn bullocks to £1630. This impressive run of cattle from the Holden family averaged £1580 for ten sold. A wonderful run of well farmed cattle from B&D Willison & Son, Tebay saw Aberdeen Angus bullocks sell to a top of £1560 with Limousin bullocks selling to the same price. Hifers from JW&N Taylor, Dent saw Limousin sell to £1540. A full pen of Limousin heifers sold for £1520 from B&D Willison, Tebay. Strong Continental bred cattle were regularly selling at the £1400 to £1500 mark, all day long. Yearling bullocks were in keen interest today with Limousins selling to a top of £1460 from JG&PH Thompson, Selside. A pair of British Blue sold to £1400 from NA&J Temple, Ulpha with Limousins also achieving the same price from A&P Hodgkinson, Stalmine. Grazing yearling Continental bullocks were regularly selling around £1050-£1100 mark. Ten month old Limousin heifers sold to a top of £1270 from MW&M Hodgson, Cartmel Fell. Smart well bred suckler heifers were regularly selling over the £1200 mark.
Buyers expressing interest to attend the next sale on Thursday 16th March, vendors are encouraged to enter cattle with confidence for this sale. Todays sale saw all steers sold average £1111 and heifers £999 with the entry being predominantly 10-14 months old.

OTM and Cast Cattle
Another fast trade for all cull cows, with an overall market averaged of 188p/kg achieved with two thirds of the entry being dairy cows and many of these being direct out of the parlour. A real shortage of the best beef cows today. Those forward sold to 264p/kg for a Limousin x from T&SB Procter, Kirkby Stephen with Stabilisers selling to 244.5p/kg from A Dixon & Son, Selside as well as Charolais x from R&BJ Cleasby, Broughton in Furness. Medium beef cows were regularly 190p/kg -210p/kg with keen interest in those suitable for finishing.
Top grossing beef cow today was a Charolais x from GA Guy, Tebay achieving £168. The £1500 barrier was broken on another three occasions by RHM&S Boyren, Colton and T&SB Procter, Kirkby Stephen.
No real headlines in the dairy cows today, with a top price of 194p/kg achieved by JR&S Handley, Heversham and Jenkin Cragg Farms, Kendal with an entry of predominantly parlour cows regularly selling at 165p/kg-185p/kg depending on quality and type. Top grossing dairy cow today was a Holstein Friesian from Jenkin Cragg Farms achieving £1420.

Catalogued sale of stirks immediately followed store cattle in the main ring and were greeted by a large ringside of local and travelled buyers keen to secure stock ahead of turn out. Aberdeen Angus x steers sold to a top of £1010 from G & D Ball & Son, Little Eccleston who sold others at £990. With WJ & EA Woodhouse, Nateby also selling Aberdeen Angus x to £940. 10 month old Charolais x steers from D & J Hay, Cockerham achieving £890 with Beef Shorthorn x from E Lund & Son, Ingleton selling to £840. Younger steers generally selling at £650-£720. Dairy bred steers sold to £600 for Friesian from R & J Parkinson ,Preesall and J & CW Metcalfe, Quernmore. Heifer stirks sold to £900 for a ring full of British Blue x from FW Rhodes & Son, with Aberdeen Angus x selling to £780 from SE & J Gorst, Littledale and Charolais x at £740 from D & J Hay, Cockerham. NWA Lancaster once again proves to be the place to sell cull cows. With an overall average of 191p/kg achieved for all sold.
Beef cows sold to 249.5p/kg for a British Blue x from H Morgan, Stalmine with Limousin x selling to 244.5p/kg from KM & KJ Curwen, Abbeystead, and 229.5p/kg from D&E Whitaker, Quernmore. Other beef cows regularly selling from 195-215p/kg with buyers actively seeking cows suitable for further finishing.
Top grossing beef cow was a Limousin from KM & KJ Curwen, Abbeystead achieving £1854 who sold others to £1787.
Heavy well fleshed dairy cows sold to 217.5p/kg for an Ayrshire from D&K Haworth, Hambleton with others selling to 199.5p/kg for a Montbeliarde from A&FM Bolland & Sons, Ellel and Holstein Friesian from H&A Stephenson, Tunstall. Other heavy well fleshed dairy cows regularly selling 180-195p/kg with cows direct out of the parlour generally 165-180p/kg. The very leanest cows at realisation.
