North West Auction where proud to host the annual show and sale on behalf of the Fell Pony Society. This sale always creates much interest and this year was no different with the auction ring packed to the rafters with standing room only attracting buyers’ interest from throughout the UK, with fell ponies from the sale travelling as far as America. The championship rosette was awarded to lot 55 Brackenbank Sidney consigned by D Wilkinson, Appleby. This colt foal was much admired sired by Applegait Indigo Archieand went onto sell for 2000gns. The reserve champion was awarded to lot 94 Greenholme Quaver a Grey Colt consigned by RJ & BK Potter, Tebay. This foal was sired by Greenholme Diego and went onto sell for 1200gns. The sale peaked at 4400gns for lot 28 Lunesdale Cassandra a yearling grey filly from R Morland, Tebay, this much-admired filly was sired by Stennerskeugh Monty. This was followed by lot 10 Carltonlima Bryonny selling to 3400gns from G Richardson, Newburgh with a bay mare. Foals sold to a top of 3300gns for Greenholme Quality whom was sired by Greenholme Lancelot. This black colt was the champion foal at the Society Breed Show and created much interest both ringside and internet going on to sell on the internet. Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep, Monday 31st October 2022. Prime Lambs There was an entry of just shy of 900 prime lambs forward with trade better than anticipated, as many deadweight companies drop the price at the end of the previous week. There was an overall market average of 221p/kg with well finished lambs of all sizes in the strongest demand. Nice confirmation heavy weight lambs led the way selling to £135 at 51kg from R&DL Cornthwaite, Nateby followed by £130 for 52kg Texel lambs from JM&MH France & Son, Littledale. Other leading prices for heavy weight Texel lambs saw the consignment from T&CM Kelsall & Sons sell to £128 and £127.50. Plenty of pens of lambs sold in the region of one hundred and twenty pounds. A strong demand for butcher type lambs in Lancaster saw 44kg Beltex lambs sell to £132 from JS Horner, Ingleton with others from the same home to 285p/kg. Plenty of pens of good confirmation, handy weight lambs sold between 260-280p/kg. More upland lambs are now coming onto the market with heavy weight Mule and Mashams in big demand and eagerly bid for at Lancaster. 56kg Mules sold to £123 from TA&RM Dawson, Quernmore followed by 55kg Mashams to £122.50 from T&D Wright, Roeburndale. Other leading prices saw 52kg Mules to £114.50 from JR&LA Capstick, Killington followed by £114 from D&D Huddleston, Wray and £113 from David Gardner, Brookhouse. Prime Lambs The weekly sale of prime lambs at J36 was greeted with a sharper trade, as all buyers present were more active and eagerly looking to purchase prime lambs. There was an entry in excess of 1300 forward, selling to an overall market average of 225p/kg. All classes of lambs were well bid for as long as they were well finished with inside fed lambs reaping the benefits. Leading the way was the consignment of heavy weight lambs from PK&R Woof, Stainton selling Texel to £165, Suffolks to £160 with other Texels to £151 and £148. This was followed by other Suffolks to £145 from AR&BJ Thompson, Selside, £142 from Clarke & Johnson, Windermere, £141 from TMW&H Hodgson, Ulverston and £137 from GM&A Jackson, Little Eccleston. Suffolk lambs peaked at £137.50 from WT Whittaker & Sons, Nether Kellet followed by £131 from JH Towers & Sons, Tunstall. Plenty more pens of well finished heavy weight lambs sold in the region of the one-hundred-and-thirtypound mark. Better confirmation lambs regularly sold in the region of 250p/kg plus, peaking at 280p/kg from AR&BJ Thompson, Selside with handy weighted better bred lambs meeting more demand. Store Lambs The fortnightly sale of store lambs saw a buoyant trade throughout the sale with all specifications of lambs being eagerly bid for. Once again at the sale at J36 saw a busy ring of local and travelled buyers. Best quality lambs were a sharper trade with more of the best confirmation lambs could have been easily sold. Leading the way was quality Texel lambs selling to £109 from L Potter, Orton with other pens of strong Texel lambs to £107 from W&J Penny, Kirkby in Furness and £105.50 from S Proctor, Selside. This was followed by other pens of Texel lambs to £99.50 from B Wilson & Sons, Selside and £98.50 from B Mallett, Ambleside. Plenty of pens of short keep lambs sold in excess of the £90 mark. Top quality confirmation lambs were in more demand today, peaking at £108 and £98.50 for Beltexs from PD&PJ Mason, Burton with other Beltex lambs to £99.50 from CI Briggs, Ambleside. Plenty more pens of quality Beltex lambs sold in the nineties. Strong Suffolk lambs peaked at £95 from J&R Bell, Crook. Dairy Cattle Pedigree Heifers Sell to £2550 At NWA Lancaster The fortnightly sale of dairy cattle saw a top price of £2550 achieved for a pedigree heifer, ‘Milnthorpe Flomont Cora 6’ from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe who sold other heifers at £2250. A sweet pedigree heifer ‘Quernmore Buttercup 228’ from JE & J Pye, Quernmore achieved £2480. R & A Jolleys, Cabus sold a heifer ‘Robanne Lambda Dolly’ at £2200.
A pair of cows from WH Gardner & Sons, Lytham saw 5th Calvers sell to £1480. Heifers averaged £2370 Cows averaged £1385 Calves & Weanlings The weekly sale of calves and weanlings in Lancaster had an entry of 98 forward. The trade remains very similar with strong calves close to weanling continuing to be best to sell meeting most bids with the cost of rearing young calves affecting the price. Weanlings were well bid for with a run of three month olds from J & G Thornley, Kirkham leading the way selling British Blue bulls to £400, Charolais heifers to £395 and £370. Eight week old Blue bulls sold to £400 from S Forshaw & Son, Longridge. A consignment of British Blue weanlings from G & ME Woodhouse, Ellel sold £370 for bulls and £360 and £350 for heifers. Seven week old Blue bulls from JP & C Robson, Garstang sold to £345 and £280. Aberdeen Angus Bull calves peaked at £290 from W & G Cornthwaite & Son, Claughton on Brock. Stronger beef calves sold in the mid two hundreds with a large number of young beef

Store Cattle The weekly sale of store cattle at Lancaster saw good quality short keep cattle continue to sell to a similar trade with other types a slightly easier trade but still looking very well sold at Lancaster. Leading the way today was the consignment from D&N Davis, Nateby with a pen of three Aberdeen Angus bullocks at £1730, who also sold a pair of Limousins to £1670. This was followed by Aberdeen Angus steers to £1610 from A Kirkby & Co, Pilling. The consignment from H Birkett & Son, Overton sold Limousin bullocks to £1490 and British Blues to £1480 with plenty of pens of strong bullocks selling in the region of £1400. Dairy bullocks peaked at £1480 for a Montbeliarde from T&E Garlick & Son, Freckleton. Black and white bullocks peaking at £1170 from H Birkett & Son, Overton. OTM Cattle As larger numbers of cast cows now come forward nationwide, the edge is ever so slightly off the trade with Lancaster overall market average 152p/kg or just over £1000 a head. Well over half the cattle forward being dairy cows. OTM Limousin heifers led the way selling to 227.5p/kg from P Cummings, Burton in Kendal. This was followed by Aberdeen Angus steers to 219.5p/kg from J&M Maudsley & Sons, Endmoor. Black and White feeding heifers sold to 199.5p/kg from D Fox & Co, Bay Horse followed by 191.5p/kg or £1532 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. Ten year old Friesian cows sold to 199.5p/kg or £1554 from TW Nelson & Son, Stainton other dairy cows selling to £1530 from Richmond Hall Farm, Cockerham, £1515 from SW&K Metcalfe & Son, Whittington with plenty more good quality cows selling in the region of £1400.
