Weekly Report and Newsletter - 5th August 2022 Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep, Monday 1st August 2022. Prime Lambs The weekly sale of prime lambs in Lancaster sold to a stronger traded than anticipated with an overall market average of 238p/kg which saw spring lambs weighing 39-45kg averaging 242p/kg, 45-51kg averaged 254p/kg and heavy weights averaging 255p/kg. Well finished lambs were demanding a premium with buyers airing on the side of caution toward leaner types. Heavy weight Texels peaked at £142 from B&M Slater, Chipping with the consignment of Texels from J&CG Redmayne, Salisbury selling to £141 and £132. Other leading prices saw Texels to £136 from Joe and Emily Bargh, Heaton with Oxcliffe with Suffolks from the same home topping at £129. Beltex lambs peaked at £131 or 298p/kg from EJ Ward & Sons, Nether Kellet with other Beltex lambs to £126 or 290p/kg from JS Horner, Ingleton. Trade today saw better bred lambs regularly selling in excess of 270p/kg with well finished commercial type lambs selling between 250-270p/kg. Less hill bred lambs were forward today, saw 41kg Masham sell to £95 from S&J France, Over Wyresdale. Cast Sheep The trade for cast sheep remains very strong with vendors urged to continue selling them, with a strong overall market average of £113 a head. The consignment from Joe and Emily Bargh led the way selling Texel x ewes to £218 and Suffolk ewes to £158. Beltex x ewes peaked at £162 from JS Horner, Ingleton. A run of Texel x ewes from B&SE Carter, Ellel sold to £154 and £152 twice. Mule ewes peaked at £148 from DJ Casson & Son, Slyne with others to £141 from GF&EE Holt, Chipping and £137 from Myerscough College with plenty of pens of strong Mule ewes in the early one thirties. Some good horned sheep on offer today saw well fleshed Swaledales sell to £108 from B&SE Carter, Ellel with others to £104 from RW&FJ Rhodes & Son, Quernmore. Prime Lambs The weekly sale of prime lambs at J36 saw an entry of 1047 forward selling to an increased market average of 245p/kg with lambs between 45kg and 50kg averaging 253p/kg. The trade saw today saw well fleshed meated lambs continue to be the most demand at J36 with handy weights depending on finishing, some better finished ones sold in excess of 250p/kg. The market peaked at £158 for 57kg Suffolk lambs from Luke Askew, New Hutton purchased by Westmorland Services Farmshop, Tebay. Heavy weight Texel lambs peaked at £148 from GU, G & Swarbrick, Grange Over Sands, followed by other heavy weight Texel’s too £147 from C & J Bennett, St Michaels on Wyre. Blue du maine lambs peaked at £146 from LJ & R Atkinson, Milnthorpe. Plenty of heavy weight lambs sold in the region of one hundred and forty pounds. Plenty of better-bred pens of lambs sold in the region of 280p/kg with better types selling in excess of this price. Calves & Stirks 70 calves were forward with a much improved trade, with fresh faces round the ring looking to purchase all types of calves, British Blue bulls sold to a top of £440 from Gibson & Berry, Endmoor with others selling to £435 from B&JM Crowe, Witherslack. All British Blue bull calves forward averaged £330. Native bred bull calves were a sharper trade with the best selling well over the £300 mark, topping at £345 from S&M Blease, Carnforth. British Blue heifers were keenly bid for selling to a top of £410 from C Parsons, Old Hutton. A young show of Black and Whites forward sold to a top of £100 from B&JM Crowe, Witherslack with medium types either side of £50. 50 stirks were forward once again selling to a full ring side of buyers, top price for Aberdeen Angus bullocks from M Forbes, Ecclefechan sold to £740 with other Aberdeen Angus bullocks selling to £710. British Blue heifers sold to a top of £710 from BJ&M Tomlinson, Salwick. A run of Fleckvieh weanling bulls from EW&RM Towers, Hornby were keenly bid for with a full pens selling to a top of £380 at 3-4 months old. Store Cattle The fortnightly sale of store cattle at Junction 36 continues to have a fast trade with many more needed to fulfil the orders of our busy ring side of buyers. 12 month old Limousin bullocks sold to a top of £1420 from A&P Hodgkinson, Poulton in Fylde. A run of strong Charolais heifers from JM Haddow, Hincaster sold to £1390 with other from the same home selling to £1330. Aberdeen Angus bullocks sold to a top of £1290 from G Cuthbertson, New Hutton with British Blue bullocks selling to £1270 from JG&BJ Escolme, Killington. Native heifers were in strong demand with Herefords selling to £1230 from S&M Cooper, Leece with others at 15 months old from GM Redmayne, Ings. Beef Breeding Cattle The August sale of beef breeding cattle saw a top price £2220 achieved for a Simmental x heifer with a Limousin x heifer calf from R&E Ladds, Kendal. The sale comprised of predominately old cows with calves which saw British Blue cows with Limousin x calves sell at £1780 and £1750 from CG Birkett, Carnforth who sold others at £1620 and £1580 with Angus x calves. Saw £1680 achieved for a Hereford x steer from R Townsend, Freckleton closely followed by Charolais x steer selling to £1620 from J M Haddow, Hincaster with a ring full of Aberdeen Angus x steers from T Robson & Son, Singleton achieving £1600. Dairy bred steers sold to £1450 for a Fleckvieh from J&H Bland & Son Ltd, Levens with Montbeliarde selling for £1430 from J Lamb, Lancaster who also sold Holstein Friesian to £1280. All steers today averaged £1241. Beef cows suitable for further finishing regularly achieving 165-185p/kg depending on breed and type. Dairy cows sold to 211p/kg for a Friesian from EW & CR Clegg & Son, Stalmine with others to 211.5p/kg from D Fox & Co, Bay Horse and 119.5p/kg from Cote Farm Partnership, Carnforth.
