Prime Lambs
The weekly sale of prime lambs at Junction 36 had an increased entry of 2023 forward, selling a very similar trade with a market average of 242p/kg achieved. A mixed entry forward in terms of quality saw best type butchers’ lambs easily selling in excess of 300p/kg. Heavy weight lambs continue to be in big demand and well sold at junction 36 with this type regularly selling in the region of 260p/kg. Handy weight well fed commercial lambs were regularly 250-260p/kg with the upland lamb trade dependant on size and finish. Leading the way was 52kg Beltex lambs selling to £157 from TLB&J Knowles, Selside. Heavy weight Texel lambs peaked at £156 From F&SA Edmondson, Ulverston followed by £154 from RC Billington & Son, Claughton on Brock and then £150.50 from KE Richards & Son, Howgill with plenty of pens of heavy weight Texel lambs in the one hundred and forties. Heavy weight Suffolk lambs peaked at £145 from DE&SM Moorhouse, Natland. Heavy weight Cheviots peaked at £149 from LA&M Lambert, Lupton with others to £140.50 from Stockdale Farms, Sedbergh. Mashams peaked at £134.50 from WI&AM Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale with Mules peaking at £126.50 from EW&JR Parkinson, Dunsop Bridge followed by £125.50 from WI&A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale. Butch quality lambs were in demand today peaking at 363p/kg or £134 from JG&PH Thompson, Selside followed by 340p/kg and £139 from Robyn Allen, Staveley and 338p/kg or £145 from Tony Ellis, New Hutton, then 336p/kg or £131 from AR&BJ Thompson, Selside and 332p/kg or £146 from RA Batty, Haversham. As to be expected at this time of year, a larger number of Horned lambs are coming forward with heavy weight Rough Fells to £119 from PE Allen, Ings with Swaledales to £110 from F&SA Edmondson, Ulverston.

Mule ewes saw the best regularly selling at one hundred and ten plus topping at £118 twice from S&B Capstick, Old Hutton and F&ME Little, Barrows Green. Mashams sold to £115 from DC Miller, Claughton on Brock. A big show of hill ewes was forward, Dalesbreds sold to £110 from Calderside Farms with Cheviots selling to £106 from BD Willison & Son, Tebay. Swaledale ewes sold to a top of £92 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale with others selling to £89 from Calderside Farm, Oakenclough. 200 Swaledale ewes forward averaged £70. Rough Fells sold to a top of £90 from GR Park & Sons, Whinfell. Forty cast rams forward saw Leicester sell to a top of £156 from R Harker & son, Greyrigg with others to £146 from JS&S Atkinson, Scorton. The opening sale of the year for prime hoggs at Lancaster had an entry of 640 forward selling to an overall market average of 240p/kg with all eleven active buyers present. Quality butchers lambs were required with best types selling in excess of 300p/kg with the consignment of Dutch Texels from GR&A Foy, Conder Green leading the way, twice peaking at £136 with others to £130, peaking at 310p/kg and 302p/kg. This was followed by the consignment from TM Townley, Over Wyresdale selling Beltex lambs to £135 or 308p/kg. The consignment from AG Butler, Hambleton sold Texel and Beltex hoggs to £135 and £132. Heavy weight hoggs peaked at £136 from W Gardner, Brookhouse with other heavy weights to £130 from D Black, Kendal. Plenty more pens sold in the one hundred and twenties. Upland lambs saw 49kg Mashams to £118.50 from T&D Wright, Roeburndale East with 51kg Mules peaking at £115 from T&H Drinkall, Oakenclough. The consignment from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe sold Texel x ewes to £140 and £122 with Cheviot x ewes from the same home to £116 and £109. Mule ewes twice peaked at £117 from Benson Farms, Claughton on Brock and H Birkett & Son, Overton with strong Mule and Masham ewes regularly in excess of the one hundred pound mark. Horned ewes peaked at £87 from D&K Swarbrick with plenty of pens of strong horned ewes in the seventies.

There was an entry of 1270 prime hoggs forward at J36 with the quality on offer very mixed, leading to an overall market average of 228p/kg with some lambs looking worth more in the store ring for further feeding and finished. Heavy weight hoggs continue to be a good trade at junction 36 peaking at £168 and £166 for Charollais from JA&R Geldard & Sons, Levens. Followed by heavy weight Dutch Spotted to £167 from Dave Dixon, Grayrigg. Texels peaked at £157 from DE&SM Moorhouse, Natland with other noted prices being £145 for Charollais from BR Harrison, Staveley, £144 for Texels from JG&BJ Escolme, Killington and £138.50 from JB Airey, Kendal. Plenty of pens of heavy weights sold in the one hundred and twenties and one hundred and thirties. Heavy weight Mules peaked at £123 from Fishwick Bros, Longsleddale followed by £121 from R Lawrence, Grange Over Sands. The trade for handy weighted lambs was very much dependant on the finish with inside fed lambs certainly the best to sell. Better confirmation handy weighted lambs regularly sold in excess of 250p/kg, peaking at 280p/kg from JA&KJ Allen, Ings. More horned lambs on the market today saw Rough Fells peak at £104 from J Hunter, Tebay with others to £100 from RH Threxton, Sedbergh with 44kg Swaledales to £90 from S&W Dickinson, Tebay.

The ewe trade was very similar to previous weeks with meat once again selling to a premium. Texel ewes sold to a top of £170 from PK&R Woof, Stainton with others to £162 from AW Crowe, Witherslack. Many of the best continental ewes were regularly selling at the £130 to £135 mark. Mule ewes topped at £135 from M&S Blease, Carnforth with others to £126 from D&S Robinson, Beckside. Strong fit Mule ewes were regularly selling in the £110 to £150 region. Hill ewes were still showing plenty of demand, Cheviots sold to a top of £105 from B&HA Sykes, Silecroft who sold other full pens to £96. Rough Fell ewes sold to a top of £109 from J Hunter, Tebay. Swaledales topped at £80 from E Parker, Mewith. The opening sale of calves of the year at J36 had a good entry of 115 calves. There was a very two-tier calf trade with strong types in very good demand and eagerly bid for with younger and plainer calves difficult to place especially young native calves. British blue bull calves lead the way selling to a top of £380 from W Stamper, Chipping with others from the same home to £330. This was followed by the consignment of British Blue calves from A Pickthall, Kendal to £350 and £320 with heifers from the same home to £300. At £310 were British Blue bulls from DR & C Galbraith, Grayrigg. British blue heifers peaked at £360 from JR Handley, Whinfell. Other leading prices for continental bulls was £305 for Simmentals from M & S Blease, Carnforth. A consignment of strong Angus bull calves from RF & CE Hodgson, Ulverston sold to £350, £340 and £330. Plenty of calves in the two hundreds. It was the young calves and native heifers today that met a sticky trade.

Limousin bullocks sold to £890 from JH Atkinson & Partners, Selside who sold other full pens of Limousin bullocks to £880. The heifer trade saw 5 month old Charollais heifers sell to a top of £670 from R&BJ Cleasby, Broughton in Furness with Limousin selling to £600 from M&S Blease, Carnforth.

The New Year Show and Sale of Store Cattle had a wonderful entry of 400 forward. Some wonderful runs of cattle were forward which we congratulate our vendors on. Trade was seen to be electric from start to finish, with a ring full of buyers looking to fill the sheds after Christmas. The pre sale show was in the capable hands of Andrew Dyson who we thank for his time and expertise, we’d also like to thank our sale sponsors Rural Law Practice and Yan Farm Health.

The pre sale champion was awarded the Janet Gorst Perpetual Challenge Trophy, the much admired heifer from Martin and Julie Winn met fierce bidding and later went on to sale for the top price of £1900.
Store bullocks sold to a top of £1720 for British Blues from MA&JA Winn, Burneside with other Blue bullocks selling to £1590 from SJ&AL Hargreaves, Morecambe. A pen of 5 strong Charollais bullocks from M&SM Robinson, Lowgill sold to £1580 with Limousin bullocks selling to £1550 twice from RG&LR Holmes, Carnforth. The best end of strong continental bullocks were regularly selling £1450-£1600. A smaller show of yearling bullocks were forward with all meeting strong demand with Limousins selling to a top of £1390 from JG&PH Thompson, Selside. Native bullocks saw Whitebred Shorthorn sell to £1270 from PE&KA Sowerby, Barras.
Store Heifers would be the trade of the day with new buyers around the ring keen to purchase, also plenty of men looking for heifers for further breeding. Out of the show heifers sold to a top of £1600 for a Limousin from M&L Preece, Kirkby Lonsdale with other Limousin heifers selling to £1570 from RG&LR Holmes, Carnforth. M&L Preece, Kirkby Lonsdale rounded off a good day for them in the ring selling other Limousin heifers to £1540. Charollais heifers sold to £1490 from M&SM Robinson, Lowgill with Blues selling to £1470 from B&D Willison & Son, Penrith. A keen interest was show for all Angus heifers forward selling to a top of £1490 from TJ Robinson, Milnthorpe with others to £1400 from J Twigge, Grange over Sands. Well meated strong continental heifers were regularly selling between £1300-£1400. With yearling grazing types selling between £950-£1050 mark.

OTM and Cast Cattle
The opening sale of cull cows saw a competitive ringside of buyers competing for all classes and types with an overall market average of 171.2p/kg achieved for 79 sold. Heavy well fleshed and well finished beef cows sold to a top price of 221.5 p/kg for a Limousin from T Atkinson, Ulverston. With other Limousin cross cows achieving 209.5p/kg from PR Escolme, Gatebeck and B Heyes, Mossboroug with British Blue cross also achieving 209.5p/kg from N Cooper &Sons, Broughton in Furness. Well bred beef cows regularly achieving 180p/kg –190p/kg with keen interest in those suitable for further finishing. Dairy cows sold to a top price of 189.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from Jenkin Cragg Farms, Kendal and S&M Cooper, Leece. Other heavy well fleshed dairy cows generally selling at 165-175p/kg with medium 145-155p/kg with leanest parlour types at 115-125p/kg.
Top Grossing cow today was a Limousin from T Atkinson, Ulverston achieving £1665 with a Hereford cross from M&S Blease, Carnforth achieving £1461 with dairy cows peaking at £1451 for a Holstein Friesian from S&M Cooper, Leece. All cull cows averaged £1093.

Top Grossing heifer also came from JG&BJ Escolme, Killington being a Holstein Friesian totalling at £1222. Several cull bulls forward sold to 209.5p/kg for an Aberdeen Angus from J Twigge, Lindale with a Hereford from JA & DE Batty, Burneside achieving £1474.
The next sale of cull cows Thursday 19th January with another large entry required to satisfy buyers command.

The opening sale of calves saw a large entry forward after the Christmas break. Bull calves sold to a top price of £480 for a Charolais cross from J&G Thornley LTD, Kirkham with Hereford cross achieving £460 and £440 from TE&M Kidd, Ellel and Simmental cross to £370 from TM Townley, Over Wyresdale. A large number of British Blue bull calves sold to £360 from J&G Thornley Ltd, Kirkham. Other nice younger rearing sorts sold to £330 from JE&C Robson, Garstang and £310 from RT Halhead, Cockerham. Young Aberdeen Angus bull calves sold to £190 from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe. Dairy bulls sold to £185 for British Friesian from RH & RA Fawcett, Carnforth with Holstein Friesians to £120 from J&G Thornley LTD, Kirkham. Younger dairy bulls sold to £60 from Wallbank Farms LTD, Over Wyresdale. Heifer calves sold to £350 for a Charolais cross from Wallbank Farms Ltd, Over Wyresdale who sold others at £340. A British Blue cross sold to £350 from J&G Thornley LTD, Kirkham with others at £320 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale with others at £300 from JE&J Pye & Son, Quernmore. Hereford cross heifers sold to £300 from TE&M Kidd, Ellel. Younger heifers generally £170 - £250 depending on breed and quality with the smallest at realisation.

Store Cattle
The opening store cattle sale of 2023 saw an impressive trade to start the New Year. Hitting the headlines this was loyal Lancaster supporters Pilling Hall, Pilling with a trio of 20 month old well grown and presented home bred Limousin steers at £1800. Also achieving this price was PM&ST Entwistle, Abbeystead for a single Aberdeen Angus steer. Not far behind was L Parsons & Sons, Levens selling a Limousin at £1720. TJ Robinson, Milnthorpe had a good day with his consignment of cattle which saw Aberdeen Angus steers to £1690. All Aberdeen Angus steers today averaged £1400 with Limousins averaging £1594. Charolais steers today saw A&E Clarkson, Thurnham achieve £1660 for a single beast while WJ&LA Barker, Arkholme sold a pen of four at £1510. All Charolais steers forward averaged £1540. Hereford steers saw a top of £1570 from A&E Clarkson, Thurnham who also had others at £1420 from this same good home. Friesian steers today averaged £1145, topping at £1460 from L Parsons & Sons, Levens with R&E Ladds, Kendal not far behind at £1430. All steers today averaged £1347 to include a number of younger cattle. There was no let up in the trade for heifers with an overall market average of £1224 achieved, again including several lots of younger cattle, around 17-20 months of age. Top of the leader board this week was GA&A Atkinson, Cantsfield who had their usual run of quality cattle, selling a single Limousin at £1460. WS Burrow & Sons, Silverdale chasing up not far behind with an Aberdeen Angus at £1450. All Aberdeen Angus heifers averaged £1226 with Limousins averaging £1265. British Blue heifers today saw the weekly consignment from AJ&D Knowles, New Hutton top at £1430 for a pair with Matthew Waller, Lupton at £1350 and Mary Cornthwaite, Hambleton to £1320. Charolais heifer from MJ Waller, Lupton sold at £1230 for a pair. Vendors are encouraged to enter cattle with confidence for the next sale and take advantage of the current flying trade.

A bumper entry of 141 cull cows sold to a top price of 249.5p/kg for a young Charollais cow from A Prickett, Farelton with Limousin cross selling to 229.5p/kg from D&DW Prickett, Farelton. Other well fleshed beef cows
generally were 190p/kg-210p/kg. Dairy cows sold to 207.5p/kg for a Fleckvieh from B&AC Barnes, Middleton with British Friesians selling to 204.5p/kg from Pilling Hall, Pilling and Holstein Friesians also achieving 204.5p/kg from C&AJ Woodhouse, Millom.
Top grossing cow was a Fleckvieh from JS&KM Wilson & Son, Natland achieving £1701. All cull cows today averaged 175p/kg and £1144.
OTM heifers sold to 214p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from J&M Hull & Sons, Winmarleigh with other Holstein Friesians selling to £1372 from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe. Cull bulls sold to 211.5p/kg and £2081 for a Limousin from JH Towers & Son, Tunstall.
