Lancaster Auction Mart: Easter Spring Lamb Show and Sale. Weekly Sale of Prime Hoggs, Cast Sheep and Sheep with Lambs at Foot, Monday 3rd April 2023.
Spring Lambs
The Easter show and sale of spring lambs attracted an entry of 46 forward. Todays judge was David Breaks and the show was kindly sponsored by WCF Fuels. The overall championship rosette was awarded to the first prize Continental x lamb from WA &LM Jenkinson, Stalmine, this lamb went on to top todays sale at £175. Other Texel lambs sold to £161 from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth who also sold heavy Dorset lambs to £146. Best bred lambs sold either side of £4 a kilo, topping at 427p/kg from WA&LM Jenkinson, Stalmine. Spring lambs were regularly selling at 335-345p/kg with native breds selling at the 315320p/kg mark.

Prime Hoggs
Another pleasing entry of 965 hoggs, sold to an average of 269p/kg with hoggs weighting from 28kg to 68kg. The sale peaked at £158 for Texels from SH&LE Birkett, Nether Kellet who sold others to £155. A wonderful run of well meated hoggs from AG Butler, Hambleton peaked at £153 for Beltexs. Heavy Continental bred hoggs were regularly selling at £135-£140. Twenty lots of hoggs today sold at 300p/kg plus, topping at 334p/kg from AG Butler with other Beltexs selling to 333p/kg from GM&A Jackson, Little Eccleston. Continental bred export hoggs were frequently selling at the 290-295p/kg mark. 44kg Cheviot hoggs from GM&A Jackson, Little Eccleston sold to £144 or 327p/kg. Heavy Mule hoggs sold to a top of £135 from F&SG Sanderson, Woodplumpton. Other Mules sold to £133 from RH&C Ayrton, Abbeystead. Horned hoggs sold Dalebred to £120 from WI&A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale with Swaledales selling to £119 from JS&S Atkinson, Scorton. M&YS Barker, Halton sold Scottish Black Face hoggs to a top of £115.

Sheep with Lambs at Foot
Sheep with lambs sold to a mixed trade with buyers showing caution toward younger lambs and ewes not carrying as much flesh. Cheviot shearling with twin Texel lambs from WG Farms, Cockerham sold to £248, with four crop Mule ewes with Texel twins from the same home selling to £240. Mule ewes with single Texel lambs sold to £158. Please advise the office with entries, so that buyers can be informed of numbers coming forward.

The overall champion from W Musgrave & Son, Dalston attracted fierce bidding from several buyers, selling to a top price of £202 to weekly supporter Browns Quality Meat, Ulverston. This lamb also achieved a top price per kilogram of 481p/kg. The best Beltex bred lambs sold regularly at £4 a kilo plus. Charollais lambs sold to £169 from JR Robinson & Son, Nook with Suffolks selling to £165 from RJ&J Towers, Ingleton. Heavy Hampshires

Sheep With Lambs at Foot
100 outfits were forward at J36 consisting of mostly Mule ewes. Younger Mule ewes with young Texel lambs from G&ID Postlethwaite, Howgill sold to £225, with Mule shearlings from JM&NJ Strickland, Whinfell selling to £220. Hornby Hall Farms sold a run of aged Mule ewes with Texel twins topping at £210. Single outfits were in the keenest interest today with Texels ewes selling to £172 from C Postlethwaite, Gosforth and aged Mule ewes with Texel singles from Hornby Hall selling to £158. An increase in number are starting to come forward with an entry of 20 pure bred Beltex ewes with Blue Texel lambs already entered for next week.

Prime Hoggs
1050 prime hoggs were forward to our usual ringside of eleven active buyers, with more number need on a weekly basis to fulfil orders. An overall market averaged of 270p/kg was achieved.
Heavy hoggs were keenly sort after with a run of well finished hoggs from M&S Blease, Carnforth selling to £168, with others from the same home selling to £165. SH&LE Birkett, Nether Kellet sold full pens of Texel hoggs to £150 with heavy Cheviot hoggs from this home selling to £144. Heavy hoggs were regularly selling at the £138-£140 mark. Export type Continental bred hoggs were frequently selling around 300p/kg mark. Mule hoggs sold to a top of £130 from M&YS Barker, Halton with other Mule hoggs selling to £128 from Cornthwaite Moors, Hambleton. An outstanding pen of Herdwick hoggs at 49kg sold to £130 from JW Hodgson, Little Langdale. Good runs of Horned hoggs forward saw 42kg Swaledale hoggs selling to £119 from DC&EM Miller, Claughton on Brock. Black Face hoggs sold to £122 GM&J Jackson, Little Eccleston followed by £118 from M&YS Barker, Halton.

A wide variety of cull sheep were forward at todays sale with buyers ringside actively competing for all classes and types. A shortage of the best heavy and pure bred ewes today with those forward selling to a top price of £205 for a Texel from Drinkall Bros, Abbeystead. Other Texels sold at £160 from PW&D Swindlehurst, Underbarrow and £152 from AE Atkinson & Son, Endmoore. A large proportion of todays sale were medium type Continental ewes selling to £128. Texel x from JW&TE Sharp Ltd, Lyth sold Suffolks to £126 with others generally £105-£115, with the next class down £85-£100. Mule ewes sold to £138 from Drinkall Bros, Abbeystead with others pens of the heaviest
£118 -£130. Medium types nicely sold at £90-£110. Hill bred ewes sold to £108 for a Cheviots from FI&ME Little, Kendal with Swaledales to £98 and Rough Fells £96.

Dairy Cattle
A pair of nice fresh second calved cows from WH Gardner, Lytham sold to a keen interest both achieving £2000 to local repeat purchasers.
The next sale is on the 21st April and will include the special spring sale of youngstock, to include the dispersal of 106 pedigree bred heifers ranging from 6 months old to in calf from WA Little & Son, Goosnargh- further entries invited to this popular fortnightly sale.
Calves & Weanlings
A small but sweet sale of quality over quantity calves. Leading the sale today was an angus steer calf and a British blue bull calf at £400 both from TN Pye & Partners, Lancaster, these were closely followed by a Hereford bull calf at £390 from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green who sold others at £360. A consignment of British Blue heifers and bulls from AW & AM Park & Son, Ellel sold to £350, £320 twice and £310. Other Angus steers achieved £345 from TN Pye & Partners, Lancaster. Younger calves sold to £290 for a Charolais x heifer from JE & SM Seedall, Blackburn who also sold Beef Shorthorn x at £205, other young calves from C & J Smith, St Michaels sold at £280 and £270 for Aberdeen Angus x. Next week sees normal business resumed with an anticipated entry of over 100 rearing and weaned calves.

Store Cattle
With the temperatures rising outside today, the thermometer inside was blown apart with the trade for all classes of store cattle, steers today averaged £1370 and heifers £1320. A few bigger fleshy cattle about today with PM&ST Entwistle, Abbeystead taking the top spot with a Limousin steer at 25 months old at £2040. Other Limousin stores from the same good home achieved £1980. Not far behind was TC Whiteside & Son, Pilling at £1950 for a pair of Aberdeen Angus steers, who also sold another pair at £1780. Limousin steers from RG&LR Holmes, Carnforth sold to £1820. British Blue steers today saw AG Stafford, Out Rawcliffe to £1820 with other British Blue steers to £1680 from WT Eastham, Goosnargh.
Younger steers today saw a lift in trade, as grazing men were out in force. JA&ME Mawson, Orton selling 17 month old British Blue steers to £1200 for a pen of three, with G&MA Smith, Samlesbury selling 16 month old Charolais steers to £1460. WT Eastham & Son, Goosnargh continued their good day with their quality run of cattle, with a pair of Aberdeen Angus heifers to £1740. British Blue heifers sold to
£1680 from the same home. Holgate Caravans saw Aberdeen Angus heifers to £1550, with numerous 20-24 month old Continental heifers £1450 to £1500. Younger grazing heifers achieved £1180 for 14 month olds from JA&ME Mawson, Orton for British Blues. Vendors are urged to enter cattle for next Friday’s sale with confidence and take advantage of the current strong trade.

No let up in trade today with the bank holiday sale average of 194p/kg for all sold.
Heavy well fleshed dairy cows led today’s sale achieving 229.5p/kg on 3 occasions from EW & R Towers, Hornby and J&M Robinson, Over Kellett. With others regularly selling 205p/kg-220p/kg. Medium dairy cows generally 185p/kg-195p/kg with only the very leanest 140p/kg-165p/kg.
Top grossing dairy cow today was Holstein Friesian from JM&TJ Livesey, Inskip achieving £1841 with Lawson Farm Ltd, Cockerham to £1786 and WN&D Smith & Sons, Cockerham to 1758.
Beef cows sold to 217.5p/kg and £1642 for British Blue from JM&TJ Livesey, Inskip with keen interest ringside for cows suitable for further finishing.
OTM Heifers sold to 239.5p/kg for Aberdeen Angus from Holgate Caravan Park, Silverdale with Holstein Friesian selling to £1441 from D Fox & Co, Bay Horse.
OTM Steers sold to 259.5p/kg and £1925 for a Simmental from A Kirkby & Co, Pilling.
Cull Bulls sold to 174.5p/kg and £1659 for a Hereford from D&E Whitaker, Quernmore.
