Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs, Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep, Monday 3rd July 2023.

Prime Lambs

Lancasters weekly sale of prime lambs saw a reduced number forward on the week. Trade on a Monday morning was well ahead of centres at the end of last week. Buyers were keen to get lambs back to kill with an SQQ of just under 300p/kg. Hitting the headlines this week was RT Owen, Widnes with a single Texel lamb at £162, with others from this same home at £161. TR Gorst, Bay Horse was next down the league table, also with Texel lambs at £154. Regular Lancaster supporter H Birkett & Son, Overton saw his trailer load peak at £151 for Texels. RC Billington & Son, Claughton on Brock saw their quality run of butcher type lambs to £149 or 347p/kg for Beltexs. Other butcher type lambs sold to 339p/kg from KA Purtill, Wigan. M Coxhead, Preston achieved 333p/kg for a trio of Beltex x lambs.

Prime Hoggs

Just a handful of hoggs over the scales this morning with trade averaging 240p/kg. WJ&EA Woodhouse, Nateby achieved £118 for Texel x with RG Woodhouse, Scorton not far behind at £115 for Horned hoggs.

Cast Sheep

98 cast sheep through the ring at Lancaster today with the trade surprisingly good after last weeks festival with all ewes averaging £100, to including a consignment of Manx bred ewes. Colin Hargreaves, Morecambe was top of the tree today with a pair of Texel x ewes at £137. Heavy Suffolk ewes from KA Purtill, Wigan sold to £135. The best Mule ewes sold to £133 firstly from TR Gorst, Bay Horse and then from E&R Cranshaw, Bindle. Other good meated Mules regularly making £120 plus. A consignment of Cheviot ewes from Stockdale Farms, Sedbergh peaking at £105. Just one cast tup from MJ&LC Lund, Quernmore to £110. More prime lambs and cast sheep can easily be handled at Lancaster on a Monday morning with buyers for all grades, shapes and sizes.

Prime Lambs

1102 lambs sold to a market average of 296p/kg with quality once again in demand with 21 pens selling over £150 per head. The sale peaked at £179 twice, firstly for 58kg Texel lambs from J Stott Jnr, Crosscrake and secondly 65kg Hampshire lambs from A & S Miles, Pennington. A consignment of well finished lambs from DE & SM Moorhouse, Natland saw full pens of Texel sell to £169.50 and Suffolks from the same good home sell to £167. 300 lambs weighing 46-50kg averaging an impressive 300p/kg, with commercial standard weight lambs regularly selling 295-305p/kg depending on finish. First draw of Mule lambs saw 50kg lambs sell to £139.50 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale.

Returning buyers ensured all butcher type and better bred lambs achieve the maximum returns. With the top pence a kilo was 354p/kg from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe with others selling to 340p/kg from J & O Galbraith & Son, Endmoor with these lambs regularly selling 335-340p/kg.

A smaller show of lighter bred lambs all sold to an improved trade on the week with these types regularly 290p/kg as long as they had plenty of meat.

A small post festival of ewes forward with a sharp rise in trade with all forward averaging £94, with over half the entry being leaner hill bred ewes. Heavy continental ewes sold to £158 for Texel x from E Dodgson, Kendal who sold others at £156, and £155 achieved by C Wilson, Witherslack. Other heavy continental ewes generally £130£150 to include Suffolk x at £146 from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe. Hill bred ewes sold to £144 for Border Leicester from A & S Miles, Ulverston with Cheviots to £106 from C Wilson, Witherslack. Mules sold to £114 from JE Wightman, Lupton with others at £110 from RG & L Holmes, Carnforth and JT Proctor, Flookburgh. Medium Mules regularly £95-£108. Leaner light weight ewes keenly bid for selling regularly achieving £50-£65 depending on breed and quality. Cull rams sold to £128 for a medium Texel from DE & SM Moorhouse, Natland. Several hoggs still forward which are now sold within the cull ewes section, today topped at £100 for a Texel x from JW Robinson & Son, Farleton with Shetland x selling to £76 from LA Prescott, Cartmel.

132 rearing & weaned calves were forward at the fortnightly sale with new & returning customers in attendance. Rearing calves sold to £505 for an 8 week old British Blue x bull from Messrs Gibson & Berry, Endmoor. With other younger British Blue bull calves selling to £400 from JW & TE Sharp, Lyth with others at £390 from HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick. Native sired bull calves sold to £345 for Aberdeen Angus x from WB Winder & Co, Dalton in Furness who sold others at £270. Dairy bull calves sold to £300 for an 8 week old Fleckvieh from J & S Brakewell, Kirkby in Furness who sold others at £240. Younger Fleckvieh bull calves sold to £215 from RF & CE Hodgson, Pennington. Heifer calves sold to £390 for a British Blue x from JW & TE Sharp, Lyth, with a 6 week old Charolais x from M & C Booth, Kentmere selling at £350. Younger month old heifer calves generally £190-£250 depending on quality and type. Weaned bull calves sold to £600 for British Blue x from Messrs Williamson, Colby with others at £560 from WB Winder & Co, Broughton in Furness. Bull stirks sold to £620 for British Blue x from E Lawson, Sedbergh. With Fleckvieh selling to £595 from SJ & J Hodgson, Colton. Heifer stirks sold to £850 for Blonde Aquitaine. Predominately 6-8 month old heifer stirks saw Aberdeen Angus sell to £685 from AE & PC Capstick Ltd, Heversham and Limousin to £640 from E Lawson, Sedbergh.

Store Cattle

Store cattle continue to sell to a competitive trade which we expect at our fortnightly sale of store cattle. A run of British Blue heifers from I & AJ Armer, Burneside saw a top price of £1430, with a lovely batch from TW Nelson & Son, Stainton selling to £1340 with a full ring of Aberdeen Angus heifers from the same home selling to £1230. Bullocks saw yearlings top the sale at £1320 for Simmentals from JB Moore, Allithwaite, with yearling Limousins sell to £1245 from JT Proctor, Flookburgh. A lovely run of 8 month old suckler calves from Messrs Hodgson, Windermere saw his best Limousin bullocks sell to £910. With a trio of 7 month old Limousin heifers from the same home selling to £840.

Beef Breeding Cattle

The monthly sale of breeding cattle saw a stronger trade than first thought with all vendors leaving pleased with todays trading. The first heifer and calf into the ring sold to the top price of the day of £2350 for a first cross British Blue heifer with a sweet Limousin calf from TLB & J Knowles, Selside with another British Blue heifer with Limousin calf selling to £2300 from EJ Hodgson & Son, Lambrigg. Cows and calves were keenly bid for, with a top of £2200 for a 3rd calver Limousin cow with a Limousin calf from A & P Hodgkinson, Stalmine with a 4th calver cow with a British Blue cow with an outstanding Limousin bull calf from M Gibson, Grisedale selling to £2000.

Cull cows saw another active ringside of buyers keen to secure all classes and types particularly those suitable for further finishing. Overall market average of 175p/kg was achieved with over half the entry being parlour type dairy cows. Beef cows sold to 219.5p/kg for Limousin x from Messrs Hodgson, Windermere, and a Stabiliser from AE & PC Capstick Ltd, Heversham, other heavy well finished beef cows 200p/kg-215p/kg with medium types

190p/kg-200p/kg. Dairy cows sold to a top price of 184.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from JM Barton & Son, Lupton who sold others at 179.5p/kg. The leaner end of dairy cows generally 145p/kg-160p/kg depending on quality and type. Top grossing cull cow was a Charolais from T Atkinson, Ulverston achieving £1936 with other heavy beef cows regularly £1400-£1600 with Dairy peaking at £1324 from JM Barton & Son, Lupton. Cull bulls sold to 179.5p/kg for a Charolais from Messrs Beaty, Windermere with others selling at £1949 from HM Hodgson, Windermere.

81 rearing calves again attracted new customers, all being impressed with the quality and quantity on offer. Rearing bull calves sold to £390 for British Blue x from JP&C Robson, Garstang and G&ME Woodhouse & Sons, Ellel with others at £380 from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green and £375 from I Slater Ltd, Bleasdale. Other stronger rearing calves generally £290 to £340 depending on breed and quality, with the younger medium sorts £250 to £300. Native bull calves sold to £375 from an Aberdeen Angus x from Barber Farms Ltd, Claughton on Brock with others at £320 from T&CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping. A wonderful consignment of Hereford x calves from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green sell to £290, £285 x3, all being six weeks old with other regularly £220 to £260. Dairy bulls sold to £220 for a Holstein Friesian from JS&KM Wilson & Son, Natland with other nice rearing types to £180 from WG Farms, Cockerham.

Rearing heifer calves sold to £320 for British Blue x from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale with other British Blue x at £310 from JP&C Robson, Garstang and Charolais x from WG Farms, Cockerham. Other nice rearing heifers were generally £260 to £300, with the youngest and smallest £195 to £240. Native sired heifers sold to £300 for a Aberdeen Angus x from Wallbank Farms Ltd, Over Wyredale and T&CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping with Hereford x to £290 from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green. Weaned native bull sold to £400 for an Aberdeen Angus x from G&ME Woodhouse & Sons, Ellel with Hereford x also selling at £400 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. Weaned heifers sold to £390 for a British Blue x from G&ME Woodhouse & Sons, Ellel who sold others at £375.

Store Cattle

An entry of predominately stronger cattle once again sold to an impressive trade, with finishers looking to keep sheds full. Steers today peaked at £1760 for an Aberdeen Angus x from L Parsons & Son, Levens. Closely followed by another Aberdeen Angus x from T Robson & Son, Singleton at £1740 and Limousin x from RG&L Holmes, Warton also at £1740. Other pens of stronger well grown steers were regularly £1500 plus, with an overall market average of £1390 for all sold.

Heifers sold to £1470 again for an Aberdeen Angus x from L Parsons & Sons, Levens with British Blue x from SH&LE Birkett, Nether Kellet achieving £1440 and Blonde x from TW&C Shepherd, Underbarrow at £1370. All heifers forward averaged £1238.

Cast/ OTM Cattle

Cull cows sold to a top price of 227.5p/kg on two occasions for a Limousin x from RG&L Holmes, Warton and a young Holstein Friesian from Messrs Gibson & Berry, Endmoor. Other well fleshed beef cows were generally 195p/kg to 210p/kg, with heavy well fleshed dairy cows 180p/kg to 195p/kg. Medium type cows of all breed were generally 165p/kg to 180p/kg, with the leanest sorts at realisation. Top grossing cow today was a Holstein Friesian from T&CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping achieving £1705. All cows today averaged 172p/kg and £1118.

OTM heifers sold to 254.5p/kg for Aberdeen Angus x from AJ Taylor, Halton and Holstein Friesian from T&CM Kelsall & Son, Chipping. Top grossing heifer being another Holstien Friesian again from T&CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping at £1532.

Steers sold to 224.5p/kg for a Shorthorn from WR Clarke, Pilling and £1642 for a Charolais from F&TE Park, Crook.
