The weekly sale of prime lambs in Lancaster had an increased entry of 830 forward selling to an overall market average of 233p/kg. The trade today saw well meated lambs continue to be eagerly bid for by a busy active ring of buyers with lean types of lambs getting penalised. Weight continues to be in big demand with lambs in excess of 52kg averaging 244p/kg.

This popular sale once again saw both national and international interest with several loads heading across the water to Ireland and Poland. Vehicles once again led the way with a very clean Kubota M7040 tractor with loader achieving £21,900, a JCB Loadall achieved £9,300 and a Volvo EC25 digger £6,800. DAF 7.5T horsebox £6,500 and a MF298 4WD tractor £5,900 and an original Landrover Defender 110 £4,800.

The cast sheep trade remains very similar topping with Texels selling to £120 from JM Sanderson, Halton. Continental ewes sold to £114 from DJ&MC Platts, Caton with plenty of pens of continental ewes selling in the early hundreds. Mule ewes topped at £100 from JM Sanderson with plenty of pens of strong Mule ewes selling into the nineties.

The second sale of breeding sheep at Lancaster Auction saw the sale commence with breeding rams selling two sheared Beltex x Texel tups to £300 and 3 shear Charolais rams to £220 from J&R Waller, Killington. Mule gimmer shearlings twice peaked at £150 from W Pinder Jnr, Newton in Bolland with other pens to £150 from R&E Dean, Chipping.
The weekly sale of prime lambs at J36 had a reduced entry forward selling to an overall market average of 230p/kg. Once again well fleshed lambs continue to be in most demand with weight continuing to be adding up best. The sale peaked at a top of £156 for heavy weight Texel lambs from John Stott, Crosscrake. Heavy weighted native lambs were well bid on J36 selling to £139 for Hampshire from A & S Miles, Ulverston with Dorsets to £137 from J Doidge, Kendal and £135 from GB Holt, Rossendale. A good run of heavyweight Texel and Suffolk lambs from F & SA Edmondson, Ulverston sold to £135, £133 and £131. Heavy weight mules from the same home sold to £114. Plenty of pens sold in the one hundred and twenties.

shortage of quality or demand at the fortnightly sale of dairy cattle, with several purchasers leaving empty handed. Heifers sold to a top price of £2480 for a two week calved pedigree heifer from JE&J Pye, Quernmore. This was closely followed by Andrew Swale, Blackburn selling a 34 litre pedigree heifer at £2400. A heifer from B&V Swan, Chorley sold to a final bid of £2020. All heifers averaged £2300. The next dairy sale in on Friday 23rd September to include the Autumn prize show for cows and heifers, open to all vendors. This day will also feature the 1st part dispersal of the milking portion of the herd, on behalf of WA Gardner & Son, Lytham who are retiring from milking.

North West Actions were proud to host the annual Ambleside Fair show and sale of North of England Mule gimmer lambs, Scotch Mules, Rough Fell Mules, Cheviot Mules and Continental gimmer lambs. The show and sale was kindly sponsored by Avant plant and machinery, Wadland Finance, Carrs Billington, Mcveigh Parker. The pre-sale show was judged by Ian Lancaster, Clitheroe and Jim Finlayson, Dumfries. North of England Mules saw the first prize rosette awarded to Jimmy Bell and Rachel Buckle, Carnwath which went on to be awarded the champion pen of the day. They went on to sell for the top price of the day of £200 with the second pen selling to £168. The second and third prize rosettes were awarded to Bob Lawrence and Emma Hand-ley, Grange Over Sands which went onto sell for £175 and £152. The sale was mainly consisting of running lambs saw a market average of £95.57 with purchasing looking for strong shearling making sheep. The sale of Rough Fell mule gimmer lambs saw a sticky trade with strong tuppers wanted but southern buyers cautious with the on going draught conditions in the south. The championship rosette was awarded to TLB & J Knowles, Selside that topped the market at £165. Cheviot Mules saw well grown tupping gimmer lambs selling between the £120-£130 mark. A top price of £152 was achieved by Low Moor Howe Farm, Winster with other top pens selling to £135 from AR & BJ Thompson, Selside with running types selling around the £100-£105 mark. The sale concluded with Continental gimmer lambs which saw a pen of ¾ bred Texels from P Wilson, Newbiggin on Lune selling at £137 with other smart pens from TMW & H Hodgson, Nibthwaite selling to £136. Strong tupping sorts sold between the £120-£130 mark.

The ‘Stars in Their Eyes’ competition was deemed a great success once again, with a special thank you going to the sponsors Bulmans Bulk and our judges for the evening Josh and Rebecca Geary, Milton Keynes. The Champion rosette and winning the Dixon Family Bowl was the Inman Family of Strickland Hill, who very kindly donated their lamb for the Crook YFC charity, selling to a new centre record of £720 purchased by B&JM Crowe, TheWitherslack.annualsale of Mule gimmer lambs sold to an overall market average of £117.86, £7 down on the year. The trade in general today saw good quality top pen lambs regularly sell in the region of £200 upwards. Strong tupping lambs were in big demand with buyers eager to purchase, regularly selling between £130 and £160, with small tuppers and big runners often between £110 and £120. The market peaked at £390 from S Allan & Sons, Appleby with other leading prices £310 from Messrs Hodgson, High Borrans, £300 AC&K Pye, Abbeystead, £275 JA&CA Gibson, Selside, £275 T Ayrton & Sons, Over Wyresdale. The Bruce Willison Trophy for the best run of lambs was awarded to RH&C Ayrton, Abbeystead, who sold there run of lambs to average £147.75 per head.
