Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Prime Hoggs and Cast Ewes, Monday 6th February 2023.

Prime Hoggs
There was an entry of 580 prime hoggs forward at Lancaster, selling to an overall market average of 219p/kg. Heavy weight hoggs continue to add up best, peaking at £142 from Sam Ayrton, Thurnham for Texels who sold other Texel to £129 twice and also topped the Suffolk section at £121.50. Heavy weight Texels from AG Butler, Hambleton peaked at £140, who also sold other heavy weight Texels to £123 and £120. Heavy weight Texels from J&E Nuttall, Old Hutton sold to £133. 48kg Texels sold to £125 from JS Horner, Ingleton who sold another pen of 45kg Texels to £120. Plenty more pens sold in the mid to late teens. Continental lambs peaked at 282p/kg for 43kg hoggs from AG Butler, Hambleton grossing at £121. Plenty more pens sold around the 250p/kg mark.

Once again, a good showing of upland hoggs in Lancaster today with heavy weight Mashams peaking at £120 from T&D Wright, Roeburndale East followed by other pens to £117 from A&MA Wright, Roeburndale East. Heavy weight Mules twice peaked at £119 from T&H Drinkall, Oakenclough with other pens of Mules to £103 from WI&A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale and £112.50 from JW Cornall & Sons, Bleasdale. Horned hoggs saw Swaledales sell to £95.50 at 43kg from WI&A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale.

Cast Sheep
An entry just shy of 100 cast sheep were forward today which sold to a very similar trade to the previous weeks as the numbers of ewes nationwide remain firm. A pure Texel ewe from Niyah Johnston, Bay Horse sold to the top price of the day of £154. This was followed by the consignment from W&A Cornall, Barnacre selling Texel x ewes to £142 and Leicesters to £130 with plenty more Continental ewes selling between £100 and £120 pounds. Texel tups sold to a top of £120 from D&J Hay, Cockerham. Cheviot Mule ewes peaked at £92 from T&L Kirkham, Eccleston with Mule ewes selling to the same price from Sam Ayrton followed by other Mule ewes to £90 from T&L Kirkham. Swaledale ewes peaked at £50 from W&A Cornall.

Prime Hoggs
The weekly sale of prime hoggs had a reduced entry of prime hoggs forward this week with a slightly sharper trade seen later in the day on Monday. Defiantly more interest this week from buyers with well finished hoggs continuing to sell to a premium. Heavy weight hoggs continue to in demand at J36 with numerous buyers for this specification of hoggs. They sold to a top of £140 for heavy weight Texels from JB Airey, Kendal which were purchased by Dave Moreland of Westmorland Services with others from the same home to £137. Other leading prices for heavy weight Texels where £138 from Jack Turnbull, Meathop followed by £133 and £131 from J & E Nuttall, Kendal with plenty more pens in the mid to late one hundred and twenties. Heavy weight suffolks peaked at £129 from DM & D Cook, Ulverston. Heavy weight upland hoggs sold to a top of £126 for Cheviots from AA Bentham, Dent. Heavy weight mules at 54kg from RM & D Dixon, Longsleddale sold to £113 with 52kg Mules to £111 from TA & J Dixon, Selside. Better confirmation hoggs continue to be in demand selling to a top of 295p/kg from J & E Nuttall, Kendal with others to 288p/kg from M & YS Barker. Well fleshed handy weighted continental hoggs sold in the region of 240-250p/kg. Horned hoggs peaked at £100 from Stockdale Farms with Swaledales selling to £98 from TA & J Dixon, Selside. In side fed light weight continental hoggs meeting some demand and well bid for as many consignors coming to the latter of there crop of lambs.

Cull ewes were eagerly bid for with the trade being a pound or two dearer than previous weeks. Texels sold to a top of £142 from E&H Winder, Ravenstonedale with Texels out of Mules selling to £130 from J&O GalbrIaith, Endmoor. First cross Continental ewes were regularly selling at the £115-£125 mark. Mule ewes saw a top of £116 from J BL&I Ellis, New Hutton with the best selling at £110 plus and medium fit types £90 plus. Cheviots topped the hill section at £100 from J&T Hunter, Dent with other Cheviot ewes selling to £95 from AJ Carr, Grange Over Sands. Rough Fells sold to £87 from L Potter, Orton with Swaledales topping twice at £63 from J&CA Gibson, Selside and SM Watson, Finsthwaite.

The February sale of in-lamb breeding sheep saw a selective ring side of buyers with the consignment from B Lowes, Grange Over Sands leading the way selling in-lamb Texel ewes to £138, £135 and £128. This was followed by the consignment of Texel x ewes from DJ&A Douthwaite, Kirkby Thore selling to £135, £130 and £125. Swaledale gimmer shearlings sold to £75 in lamb to the Leicester from F Carr, Arkholme.

Store Hoggs
The Fortnightly sale of store hoggs saw a much improved trade with a market average of £75.61, as the trade starts to move in the right direction and the weather beginning to feel a little bit more like spring. Best quality short keep Continental hoggs were often sold around the £90 mark with the trade peaking at £93.50 from B&D Willison & Son, Tebay with a pen of 24 Texels. A pen of 23 from the same home sold to £91 with a pen of 93 also selling to £91. Texel hoggs sold to £91.50 from High Wardses Farm, Cautley and £90.50 from JH Atkinson & Partners, Selside with plenty more pens in the late eighties. Beltex hoggs peaked at £92.50 from BJ Bowness, Kendal. Suffolk hoggs sold to a top of £84.50 from N Moloney, Troutbeck. Mule hoggs peaked at £90 from High Wardses Farm with others pens to £84.50 from KJ Knight, Kirkby in Furness with plenty more pens of strong Mules selling around the eighty pound mark. Horned hoggs peaked at £62.50 from KJ Knight with Scotch Blackface x hoggs to £51 from Coward Brothers. The next sale of in-lamb sheep and store hoggs is on the Thursday 23rd February with all entries of breeding sheep and store hoggs invited.

Bull calves sold to a top price of £530 for a reared British Blue x from J&G Thornley Ltd, Kirkham with Charolais x bull calves selling to £460 from WG Farms Ltd, Cockerham. Other reared and weaner bull calves were selling in the region of £380 to £420. A nice entry of younger British Blue x bull calves sold to £280 for a 6 week old from JP&C Robson, Garstang with others at £270 from J Hoggarth & Son, Slyne and a 4 week old to £240 from WR Clarke & Partners, Carnforth. Native sired bull calves sold to £220 for an Aberdeen Angus x from Wallbank Farm Ltd, Over Wyresdale. An entry of younger dairy bull calves sold to £80 for a Holstein Friesian from WG Farms Ltd, Cockerham.
Heifer calves sold to £440 for a nicely reared British Blue x from J&G Thornley, Kirkham who sold Charolais x at £340. Younger heifer calves sold to £265 for a Charolais x from JE&S Seedall, Mellor with British Blue x to £240 from Wallbank Farms Ltd, Over Wyresdale. Native sire heifer calves sold to £225 for a Beef Shorthorn x from JE&S Seedall, Mellor with others at £180 from Cornthwaite Moors Ltd, Hambleton.
A pen full of stirks from RE&P Miller, Garstang saw 6 month old Aberdeen Angus x bulls sell to £580 with heifers selling to £600 for British Blue x and £460 for Aberdeen Angus’s.

Dairy Cattle today sold to a top price of £2000 for a heifer from AE&A Swale, Rishton closely followed by a fresh second calved cow achieving £1980 from R&K Jenkinson, Pilling. Plenty of buyer’s were ring side looking for additional and replacement stock with more required to fulfil requirements.
Store Cattle
Trade remained fast and furious with a top price of £1900 for a pair of Limousin x steers from DE&SM Moorhouse, Kendal with a pen of four Aberdeen Angus x steers from TC Whiteside & Son, Pilling achieving £1770. British Blue x steers sold to £1740 from H Chapman & Son, Middleton and other Aberdeen Angus x steers to £1720 from Pilling Hall, Pilling with Blonde de Aquitaine to £1660 from SA Hill, Slyne. Dairy bred steers sold to £1570 for a Montbeliarde from J&JM Walmsley, Pilling who sold Holstein Friesian at £1440 with other Friesains achieving £1380 from EE Thornton & Son, Morecambe and Fleckviehs to £1350 from MJ&LC Lund, Quernmore. All steers today averaged £1343. Heifers sold to a top price of £1590 for a Charolais x from J&JM Walmsley, Pilling with British Blue x heifers from JM&A Wallbank & Son, Wray selling at £1490 with others at £1460 from AJ&D Knowles, Kendal. Native sired heifers sold to £1440 on three occasions for an Aberdeen Angus x from JB Moore, Allithwaite, JM&A Wallbank & Son, Wray and KH&D Holden & Son, Pilling. Other strong heifers were regularly £1350 to £1400. All

NWA Lancaster remains the place to be to sell your cull cows with an overall market averaged of 185p/kg for all sold, with other half the entry again being dairy cows. Beef cows sold to a top price of 259.5p/kg for a young Stabiliser from M Allen, Carnforth with well-fed British Blue x cows from JE&AC Clarke & Son, Melling selling to 234p/kg and 231p/kg, with Limousin x from the same home achieving 227p/kg. Heavy well fleshed beef cows were regularly in excess of 210p/kg with medium types suitable for finishing 180-205p/kg. Top grossing beef cow today was a British Blue from JE&AC Clarke achieving £1819 with others from the same home at £1740 and Limousin x at £1649.
Heavy well fleshed dairy cow sold to 229p/kg from a British Friesian from JE ME & JP Seed, Garstang, Holstein Friesian to 224p/kg from T&CM Kelsall & Son, Chipping with a Montbeliarde to 217p/kg from A&FM Bolland & Sons, Ellel, Norwegian Red also at 217p/kg from MD Close & Son, Arkholme and Fleckvieh to 211p/kg from DJ A & L Sutcliffe, Winmarleigh. The best dairy cows were regularly 180-195p/kg with medium types 155-175p/kg and the leanest parlour types 110-140p/kg. Top grossing dairy cow today was a Montbeliarde achieving £1891 from A&FM Bolland & Sons, Ellel who sold others at £1729 with Holstein Friesian to £1668 from RG&B Lewis, Middleton and £1666 from I Atkinson & Son, Warton.
Beef Heifer sold to 249p/kg and £1414 for a Limousin x from Pilling Hall, Pilling. Dairy heifers sold to 239p/kg from a British Friesian from EE Thornton & Sons, Morecambe with Holstein Friesian to 217p/kg from S&HM Batty & Sons, Quernmore and 214p/kg from H Wright & Son, Kendal. Top grossing OTM dairy heifer was £1573 from I Atkinson & Son, Warton who sold others at £1554 and £1518.
Aberdeen Angus steers sold to 249p/kg and £1749 from A Kirkby & Co, Pilling. An entry of Limousin bulls from P Cummings, Carnforth sold to 264.5p/kg twice and also achieving £1653 and £1639.
