Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep. Fortnightly Sale of Store Lambs, Monday 7th November 2022.
Prime Lambs
Following on from the weekends fireworks, the trade in the Lancaster prime lamb ring started the new week with a ‘bang’, with a big jump in market average to 243p/kg and an SQQ of 245p/kg, up in excess of 20p/kg on the week. Heavy weight lambs were adding up well and meeting plenty of demand with 56kg lambs to £149 and 55kg Texels to £141 from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof. This was followed by heavy weight Texels to £140 from J Oddie & Son, Blackburn and £139 for 50kg Texels from JE Parkinson & son, Quernmore. Suffolks sold to £137 and £136 from S Ayrton, Thurnham. Plenty more pens of heavy weight Continental lambs easily sold around the £130 mark.
A larger quantity of upland lambs were forward which once again saw heavy weight Mashams to £138 and £130 from T&D Wright, Roeburndale East. This was followed by 55kg Masham’s to £130 from WI&A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale. 54kg Mules sold to £128 and £127 from W&A Cornall, Barnacre followed by other Mules to £123.50 from JR&LA Capstick, Killington and £122.50 from JS&S Atkinson, Scorton. Best confirmation lambs were once again in big demand at Lancaster, peaked at 330 p/kg for a 38kg Beltex lamb from AG Butler, Hambleton grossing £125. This was followed by 300p/kg for 42kg Texel lambs to £126 from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof and £134 or 298p/kg for a pen of 45kg Texel lambs from TM Townley, Over Wyresdale. Good confirmation lambs regularly sold at 280-290p/kg.

Cast Sheep
Cast sheep were met with a slightly sharper trade with well over 100 forward once again. Leading the way today was a Texel x ewe at £142 from Pilling Hall, Pilling. This was followed by Suffolk x ewes to £122 from G Blacklidge, Wigan and £120 from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Plenty more pens of Continental ewes sold in to the hundreds and teens. Mule ewes peaked at £104 from T&L Kirkham, Eccleston with plenty of strong ewes
selling around the £100 mark. Horned ewes peaked at £88 from W&A Cornall, Barnacre followed by Dalesbreds to £84 from FK&F woodhouse, Scorton.

Store Lambs
The fortnightly sale of store lambs had an entry in excess of 100 forward, the consignment of strong short keep lambs from PG Thornton, Scorton led the way selling Texels to £103 and £89 with Suffolks from the same home to £99. Medium keep better confirmation Texel lambs sold to £82 from J Gardner, Bay Horse and £80.50 from PD Pye, Abbeystead. Due to the wet weather it is now required for prime lambs to be belly clipped, we have facilities available on site.

Pigs
Pigs sell to £165 at NWA J36
A large entry of pigs forward with a top price of £165 achieved for a pen of four Duroc x gilts from JM Navesey, Darwen who also sold hogs of the same breeding at £148. These pigs also topped the market at 183p/kg. Other well finished pigs sold to £122, £108, £106 and £100. Eight buyers were present keen to secure well finished prime pigs, unfortunately todays sale had a very large portion of under weight and under finished pigs which were severely penalised.
Store pigs sold to £44 for Large White x from j GE Heseltine & Son, Skipton with weaners selling to £32 for Gloucester Old Spot from P Martin, Barnard Castle. Buyers are encouraged to pre enter pigs ahead of the next sale on Tuesday 22nd November to assist with canvassing buyers, over half the entry today were unentered.
Prime Lambs
There was a much increased entry of 1813 prime lambs forward in the market which were met with an increased trade, as all lambs forward averaged 245p/kg and heavy weights 250p/kg. All lambs were eagerly bid for with buyers looking for all specifications of well finished lambs. Once again heavy weight lambs sold to a premium at J36 with a cracking consignment from F&SA Edmondson, Ulverston leading the way, selling heavy weight Texels to £158, £156, £152 and £150 with heavy weight Suffolks from the same home achieving £152. This was followed by other heavy weight Texels to £150 from JN&DJ Bowes, Crook. Other noted prices from heavy weight Texels
were £148 from KE Richards & Son, Howgill, £148 from JG&PH Thompson, Selside, £145 from R Lawrence, Grange Over Sands, £145 from RA Batty, Selside and £143 from TMW&H Hodgson, Ulverston. Suffolks sold to a top of £150 from R&J Dodgson, Natland followed by £149 and £148 from SHM&S Boyren, Ulverston. Plenty more pens of heavy weight lambs sold in the region of £140 mark.
Heavy weight Mules peaked at £139 at 59kgs from TE JS & SA Curruthers, Underbarrow with other Mule lambs at the same weight to £138 from F&SA Edmondson, Ulverston. Heavy weight Cheviots sold to £134 at 51kgs from Stockdale Farms, Sedbergh. Good quality lambs were in plenty of demand today peaking at 300p/kg for 42kg Beltex lambs grossing £126 from G Beresford & Son, Kirkby in Furness followed by 298p/kg from John Twigge, Lindale and 295p/kg from AR&BJ Thompson, Selside with plenty more pens of quality handy weight lambs selling in the region of 280p/kg.

All cast sheep sold to a slightly sharper trade on the week with 550 forward, Suffolk ewes led the way selling to £148 from TH Garnett & Son, Stank Other Suffolks sold to £145 from S&J Sharp, Barrow in Furness. Texels sold to a top of £136 from MD&SA Park, Lyth. Well bred Continental ewes were regularly selling in the £125-£130 mark. Cheviot Mules sold to a top of £115 from P Whitton & Son, Burneside who sold others to £112. Mule ewes sold to a top of £106 from KE Richards & Son, Howgill with the best end selling over the hundred pound mark. Medium fit Mule were regularly selling in the mid eighties. Hill ewes sold to a top of £117 for Cheviots from P Whitton & Son, Burneside. Swaledales sold to a top of £87 for a pen of fifteen from JS&S Atkinson, Scorton with Rough Fells selling to £82 from RJ&OB Simpson, Longsleddale. Forty cast rams forward with Texels selling to £165 from J&H Bland & Son, Levens who sold others to £140. Swaledales topped at £96 from PE&KA Sowerby, Kirkby Stephen.

Suckler Calves
The second show and sale of sucklers saw a strong entry of 450 sucklers forward which were met by a full ring side of buyers. A marvellous show of calves were put before our judge Mr Toppin, Penrith after much time and deliberation he awarded the Champion rosette for the first prize heifer to TW Gorst, Crook. Topping off a good day for Mr Gorst, he also received first prize bullock.
The suckler calf trade saw a two tiered day with well grown and fed suckler calves continued to be well bid for and sold at ease. The smaller and weathered calves were a little harder to place than at the first sale with buyers showing caution of the continued feed costs of a long winter ahead.
Topping the sucker trade was a showy Limousin heifer from M&D Hatton, Broughton Mills after much interest sold to £1360. British Blue heifer sold to £1140 from TW Gorst, Crook. The best end suckler heifers were a breeze to sell, regularly selling at £900 to £1000. The next level down heifers sold at £700 to £750 mark. Suckler bullocks were well sort after with the best end regularly getting over the £1000 mark. Top price was a British Blue bullocks from M&D Hatton selling to £1180. Other British Blue bullocks sold to £1010 from TW Gorst, Crook. Charollais sold to a top of £1000 from AG&ME Clarke, Cartmel Fell. Strong well grown bullocks were regularly selling at the £850 to £900 mark. An entry of 70 suckler bulls were forward with a top price of £1140 from D&P Johnston, Dalton for Limousins with the best end suckler bulls selling well over the £1000 mark.

Well-bred heavy beef cows sold to 229.5p/kg for a Blonde from T Atkinson, Ulverston with another Blonde from MJ Whitworth selling at 217.5p/kg. Limousin x cows sold to 204.5p/kg from B Heys, Manchester, Stabilisers to 201.5p/kg from A Dixon & Son, Selside with a British Blue x to 199.5p/kg from NP&CE Buckley, Staveley. Dairy cows sold to 179.5p/kg from Jenkin Cragg Farms, Kendal with British Friesians to 177.5p/kg from JW Hargreaves, Broughton in Furness and Montbeliarde to 177.5p/kg from JJ&MA Park & Son, Helsington. OTM beef heifers sold to 219.5p/kg for a Limousin x from J Twigge, Lindale with diary heifers selling to 181.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesians from S&M Cooper, Leece. Top grossing heifer was a heifer x from RJ&J Gardner, Natland achieving £1548.

North West Suffolk Breeders Club Show and Sale of Suffolk females and Multi Breed individual sheep A cracking entry forward once again for this sale saw the entry full of quality with the sale attracting much interest from far and wide. The pre-sale show judging was in the capable hands of Richard Hutchinson of the Howgillfoot flock of pedigree Suffolks whom we thank for his time and expertise. The pre-sale show was sponsored by North West Suffolk Breeders Club and Mulberry Farming. The championship rosette was awarded to the first prize gimmer lamb from E Needham of the Norman flock, this much admired gimmer lamb was sired by Forkins McCoy and went onto sell for 1,000gns to RA Batty. The third prize gimmer lamb also from the same home sired by the same ram sold for 800gns. The first prize rosette in the in lamb Suffolk class was awarded to RA Batty with a Springstone gimmer shearling sired by Springstone Challenger whom was scanned in lamb with twins to Erringal Equalizer went onto sell for 1000gns to S Woodend. The first prize rosette in the ewe class was awarded to G & K Richmond of the Sullom Flock with a Sullom Dynamite daughter whom was scanned with twins went onto sell for 750gns. The second prize ewe sold to 1000gns from SC Walker of the Oxbrukheys flock with a Capielaw Captain daughter who was carrying twins to Capielaw Conan. The consignment from T & E Redmayne of the the Ghyllside flock created much interest with his consignment of in lamb sheep selling to 700gns and 600gns. The consignment of gimmer lambs from TA Blair of the Thornfleet peaked at 700gns. The sale included the major flock reduction of the adult proportion of the Powerline Suffolk’s on behalf of Andrea Gardner. This consignment of breeding ewes and gimmer shearlings created much interested and were greeted with eager bidding topping at 680gns for a Sitlow Evoque sired ewe scanned in lambs with twins. Other leading prices from this flock sold to 500gns and 480gns. The sale also included multi breed females which saw the annual consignment from RJ & J Towers, Ingleton which peaked at 700gns. Blue Texel’s from Andrew Bailey sold to 500gns twice.

Calves and Stirks
The weekly sale of calves at Lancaster saw a reduced number after last weeks bumper entry. A mainly younger show of calves today with the stronger and older calves easy to sell but younger ones a more selective trade. JM&MH France & Son, Littledale took top spot with a British Blue eight week old to £440, this home also sold British Blue heifers to the top price of the day of £260. Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale had their usual quality of calves on offer, topping with British Blue bulls at £360. Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale saw their trailer load of calves top at £315 for a month old Aberdeen Angus bull with other Aberdeen Angus calves from TW Townley, Over Wyresdale to £275. Just a couple of stirks in todays from A&R Partington, Bolton sell seven month old British Blue steers to £705 and six month old British Blue heifers to £600.

Lancasters renowned weekly store cattle sale saw just over 200 cattle go through the main ring with a fantastic show of forward type cattle, with the strength showing in todays averages as all steers forward averaging £1224 and heifers £1047.
Taking the top honours today was TC Whiteside & Son, Pilling with a pen of three Aberdeen Angus Steers at 25 months old selling to £1620. J Oddie & Son, Balderstone also sold a pen of three Angus’s to £1580. British Blue steers saw RG&LR Holmes, Warton to £1430 with regular vendor H Birkett & Son, Overton selling a pen of three British Blues to £1420.
Aberdeen Angus bred cattle also stole the headlines in the heifer section with JD&GM Bracken, Garstang topping at £1440 and R&E Ladds, Kendal selling a pen of four to £1310. JT&GV Dobson, Grindleton had a good day selling a good run of Angus’s, topping at £1290 for a pen of four. Limousin heifers peaked at £1280 from T&E Garlick & Son, Freckleton. A trio of Charolais from JH&F Nutter, Hurst Green sold to £1260.

OTM Cattle
The weekly sale of OTM cattle saw a plainer, show of cattle forward with 116 through the bottom ring. Prices were slightly easier on the week with best meated cows still a good trade. Getting top spot this week was regular Lancaster supporters RH&C Ayrton, Abbeystead whos well fleshed Limousin cow came to £1559.89, this home also sold other cows at £1490. MB Flatman & Son, Over Wyresdale was not far behind at £1411.33 also for a Limousin cow. Friesian cows this week peaked at £1415.35 from EJ&PE Burrrow, Storth. SH&M Batty, Quernmore sold Friesians to £1383.75 with WE&G Hewitt, Cockerham also breaking the £1300 barrier at £1346.95.
Pence per kilo this week saw RH&C Ayrton with a Limousin cow at 227.5p/kg. Pilling Hall, Pilling sold Aberdeen Angus cow’s to 207.5p/kg. Friesian cows topped at 197.5p/kg from MJ Fell Ltd, Carnforth who also had others at 189.5p/kg.
Top grossing OTM heifer today peaked at £1429.68 from AT Burrow & Son, Gressingham for Friesains. Also making over £1400 was J Burrow & Son, Preston at £1406 also for Friesains. Beef bred OTM heifers saw AJ Metcalfe, Out Rawcliffe to £1394.85 for a British Blue with H Halhead & Sons, Nether Kellet showing Herefords to £1384.85. JT&GV Dobson, Grindleton saw Aberdeen Angus heifers to 221.5p/kg with Simmentals to 217p/kg from EJ&PE Burrow, Storth. Friesain OTM heifers saw J Burrow & Son, Preston to 211p/kg with others at 207.5p/kg from AT Burrow & Son, Gressingham. A good show of OTM steers saw JH Woof & Son, Oxenholme sell Aberdeen Angus’s to 227.5p/kg or £1371.70 with others from H Birkett & Son, Overton to 221.5p/kg or £1377. The overall market average today was 157.8p/kg, which included some very plainer type beasts.
