J36 Rural Auction Centre: May Online Machinery Sale

The monthly online collective machinery sale once again saw a wide range of items entered with seasonal and well-maintained items selling to a premium.

A well maintained Izuzu pickup (2018 reg) achieved £12,400, a Bobcat telehandler £12,100 and a Kubota RTV (2021 reg) £11,000.

Other tractors and vehicles included a Massey Ferguson 6140 at £6000, Land Drover Defender 90 £5900, International 685 XL £5700 and a Kubota Mini Digger at £5300.

Seasonal equipment saw a Welger RP235 round baler sell at £7300, Tanco Wrapper £4100, 8T silage trailer £2600, Reco Fella mower £2500, John Deere 575 Round Baler £2100, Vicon Baler £1650, Sprayer £1350, Mounted Grass Harrows £1150.

Trailers sold to £3550 for a IFor Williams Livestock Trailer, 14T Tipping Trailer £1750, IFor Williams Plant Trailer £1650, Welfare Shower Unit £1650, Bailey Trailer £1400.

Spring Lambs

100 spring lambs were forward with an overall market averaged of 322p/kg, the best-bred lambs were regularly selling at 335p/kg plus. Topping at £3.66 per kilo from T Foster, Preston. A run of Suffolk x Mules from WM&D Smith & Sons, Cockerham topped at £158, with other full pens from the same home topping at £156.50. Dorsets sold to £155 from D Cockett, Ingleton.

731 hoggs were forward which sold to a market averaged of 297p/kg. Texel hoggs sold to £182 from F&SG Sanderson & Son, Woodplumpton with other Texels to £181 from AG Butler, Hambleton. Heavy Continental bred hoggs were regularly selling at £165 to £175. Cheviot Hoggs sold to a top of £158 from Cardwell Farms, Stalmine with full pens of Mule hoggs from F&SG Sanderson & Son, Woodplumpton selling to £152. Scotch Black Face hoggs sold to £141 from Cardwell Farms. A run of Scotch Black Face hoggs from Williamson Brothers, Ulverston saw a full pen of 39kg hoggs sell to £129. Once again Lancaster has a full ringside of buyers to catering for all goods.

Sheep with Lambs at Foot

The Annual Show and Sale of Hoggs with Lambs at Foot was kindly sponsored by WCF Fuels and judged by Mr Alasdair Prickett, who we thank for his time and expertise. He awarded the championship rosette to the first prize Mule hoggs with Texel lambs from JR Gorst, Dolphinholme which went on to sell for £200. The hogg sale topped on two occasions at £210, firstly for Texel hoggs with Texel lambs from PM&MA Ward & Sons, Arkholme and then for Mule hoggs with Texel lambs from J Bargh, Heaton with Oxcliffe selling to the same price. A run of aged Mule ewes from PM&AM Ward & Sons sold to a flying trade, topping at £260 for twins with other pens selling to £252.

PRIME PIGS SELL TO £315 at NWA J36

Another rise in the pig trade saw the best prime pigs sell to an extreme trade topping at £315 for Pietrain x Gilts from P Woof, Kendal who sold other at £310 closely followed by a trio of the same quality pigs from J Stott, Kendal achieving £275. Other heavy weight generally selling at £180-£205. Lighter weights sold to £168 from W Stamper, Chipping and Gilts from D Morley, Scotland selling to £168. Weaners sold to £40 from D Morley, Scotland with younger weaners at £26 from JF Pickthall & Sons, Milnthorpe.

Calves & Stirks

NWA J36 saw 166 calves and stirks forward which sold to a wide audience of buyer, with new and returning customers in attendance both buying and selling. Bull calves sold to a top price of £515 for a British Blue x from Messrs Gibson & Berry, Endmoor with other British Blue x selling to £490 from JW&TE Sharp Ltd, Lyth. Other stronger bull calves were generally £400-£450. Best of the rearing calves sold to £395 for a British Blue x from HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick with the youngest rearing calves selling to £240 from TK Robinson, Old Hutton. Native sired bull calves sold to £490 for a Hereford x from W&S Airey, Whittington who sold others at £385 and £380. Young Aberdeen Angus bull calves sold to £250 from Whitestone Farm, Penrith with other at £225 from FB Dunning & Son, Orton and Beef Shorthorn at £205 from RG&JA Clarke, Endmoor. Dairy bred bulls sold to £260 for a Fleckvieh from AE&MH Hayhurst, Natland who sold Holstein Friesian at £195. Younger dairy bulls were generally £65-£95, depending on breed and quality. A keen interest in heifer calves with buyers looking to secure heifers at future breeding replacements. British Blue x sold to £640 from MH&AR Robinson, Old Hutton who sold Charolais x at £500 and Limousin x at £440. Other stronger heifer calves sold to £500 for a British Blue x from W&S Airey, Whittington. A wide variety of stirks saw something for everyone with steers selling to £925 for a Limousin x from WJ&E Mckinney, Kirkby in Furness with Aberdeen Angus x selling to £885 from IM Clegg, Staveley and Salers to £790 from JJ&J Woof & Son, Sedbergh.

Heifer stirks sold to £930 for an eye-catching 6 month old British Blue x from MJ Whitworth, Bolton le Sands with Aberdeen Angus x selling to £885 from JM Wilson, Selside and British Blue x from Messrs Gibson & Berry, Endmoor. Younger heifers sold to an exceptional trade with six month old Aberdeen Angus x selling to £700 for a ringfull from Messrs Young, Lindal with others at £560 from Whitestone Farm, Penrith. A consignment of four month old Limousin and Aberdeen Angus x heifer from Langley Park Farm, Millom sold to £535 with others at £500.

Five month old Simmental x bulls from M Knowles, Garstang sold to £620 who also sold Limousin x at £600. Limousin and Aberdeen Angus x bulls from Langley Park Farms sold to £600. Dairy bred bulls sold to £580 for Fleckviehs from SJ&J Hodgson, Colton who sold others at £540.

Beef Breeding Cattle

The May Sale of Beef Breeding cattle saw a wide range forward with buyers from throughout the Northern Counties in attendance and keen to secure additional and replacement stock.

Heifers with calves at foot sold to £2300 for a British Blue x with a Limousin x steer calf at foot from TH Garnett & Son, Barrow in Furness who sold other at £2150 with heifer calves at foot. CD Slinger & LJ Eaton, Sedbergh sold British Blue x heifers with young Limousin x bull and heifer calves at foot at £2100, on a number of occasions.

An entry of predomination older calves at foot sold to £2050 for a British Blue x cow with blonde x calf at foot from MJ Whitworth, Bolton le Sands who sold others with heifer calves at foot at £1850. A herd reduction on behalf of Myerscough College sold British Blue x cows with Aberdeen Angus x calves to £2050, with others from the same home regularly selling at £1800-£1980.

The next sale of beef breeding cattle is on Thursday 8th June, to include the great annual prize show and sale heifers and cows with calves at foot. Several noted local annual consignments are already entered.

Store Cattle

236 store cattle sold to a large ring side of eager bidders, keen to secure all classes of stock. Steers sold to £1650 for a pen of Aberdeen Angus x from BJ Bowness, Kendal who sold another pen of five at £1600. Well grown British Blue x steers from KG&LM Park, Witherslack sold to £1590. Others were at £1575 from RJ&R Holden, Millom who also sold Charolais’s at £1520. Limousin x steers from GM Metcalfe, Underbarrow saw a pen full sell at £1490, with others at £1480 from KG&LM Park. Dairy bred steers sold to £1425 for a ring full of Fleckviehs from BJ Bowness, Kendal.

A keen interest in steers suitable for summer grazing sold to £1300 for Limousins from RJ&R Holden, with Charolais selling to £1220 from SH Whiteman, Milnthorpe. An eye-catching ring full of ten month old Limousin steers sold at £1160. Native bred yearlings sold to £1070 for Aberdeen Angus x from MW&PA Rollason, Meathop with other Aberdeen Angus x selling at £1020 from J Stott, Crosscrake.

Heifers sold to £1560 for a Limousin x from MJ Waller, Lupton closely followed by a Fleckvieh from RW Nicholson, Lupton achieving £1550. Aberdeen Angus x from TJ Robinson, Milnthorpe sold at £1480 with a Limousin x from DJ Dickinson, Ulverston achieving £1450. Other stronger heifers regularly selling at £1250£1350 with British Blue x selling at £1360 from KG&LM Park, Witherslack.

Younger heifers for grazing sold to £1120 for British Blue x from MW&MR Black, Staveley who sold others at £1100. Eight month old Charolais x heifers from Messrs Clegg and Bennett sold at £1020 with others from the same good home at £925. Younger heifer generally sold at £820-£900 depending on breed and quality. An increased entry of 15 feeding bulls sold to a top price of £1380 for a Limousin x from RJ&R Holden, Millom who also sold Blonde x at £1095. Native sired bulls sold to £1060 for a Hereford x from DJ Dickinson, Ulverston with Aberdeen Angus x selling to £900 from DM Bargh, Morecambe. The next sale of store cattle is on Thursday 25th May, with an entry in excess of 300 required to satisfy buyers.

OTM Cattle

Another increased entry of cull cows saw 74 forward, continuing to sell to the high rates now expected at NWA J36. Well fleshed beef cows continue to sell to a premium peaking at 249.5p/kg for a Stabiliser from JA&R Geldard & Sons, Levens who sold others at 229.5p/kg. Limousin x and British Blue x cows suitable for feeding sold to 224.5p/kg from I&AM Armer, Burneside with Hereford x at 221.5p/kg from RJ&J Gardner, Natland and Aberdeen Angus x also achieving 221.5p/kg from S&M Carter, Witherslack.

Dairy cows sold to a top price of 197.5p/kg for a British Friesian from JW Hargreaves, Broughton in Furness with Holstein Friesian selling to 189.5p/kg from S&M Cooper, Ulverston. An entry of predominantly parlour type dairy cows regularly sold at 175p/kg-190p/kg, depending on quality and type.

Top grossing cow today was a heavy weight Hereford x from RJ&J Gardner, Natland achieving £1932 with British Blue x selling to £1864 from J&M Wilson, Selside with dairy cows peaking at £1528 from JW Hargreaves, Broughton in Furness.

OTM beef heifers sold to 247p/kg for a Hereford x from RJ&J Gardner, Natland with others at 244.5p/kg for a Limousin x from I&AJ Armer, Burneside. Top grossing beef heifer was a Limousin x from JE Read, Hutton Roof achieving £1625. Dairy heifers sold to 231p/kg for a Fleckvieh from RW Nicholson, Lupton with Holstein Friesian selling to 227.5p/kg from Messrs Gibson & Berry, Endmoor. Top grossing diary heifer was a British Friesian from JE Read, Hutton Roof achieving £1420.

OTM steers sold to 234.5p/kg and £1477 for Limousin x from JL Bird, Flookburgh with British Friesian selling to 214.5p/kg and £1357 from JE Read.

Another fantastic Friday at NWA Lancaster selling 450 head of cattle all done and dusted by 12.40pm.

Calves & Weanlings

Calves started the day with a packed ring of buyers all keen to purchase replacement stock, with many going home with empty trailers.

A nice entry of 74 quality calves forward through the calf ring at Lancaster this Friday. Top of the sale was a stylish Charolais 6 week old bull calf from G.R Bargh achieving £550, a good entry of 7 Hereford calves from T.E & M Kidd averaging £445, another packet of outstanding calves forward from J.P & C Robson, including British Blues bulls up to £440 and British Blue heifers up to £330, J.E Seedall showed a good selection of Beef Shorthorn calves at £290, £280, £220, Fleckvieh at £215 and a Charolais at £380. Other British Blues from Barber Farms at £360 and WG Farms at £350 and £335. Other Aberdeen Angus to £340 and £265 from T & CM Kelsall & Sons. A selection of newly weaned calves from R.E & P Miller averaged £188 and £295 for a Hereford heifer. J Bargh & Son had a consignment of 10 Angus & Blue calves reaching an average of £306.

A trio of weanling Angus steer at £490 and 2 Angus heifers at £475.

Store Cattle

Store Cattle trade continues to surpass vendors expectations with 200 going through the main ring, with 25 of that making £1700 or over. Topping the trade was R&EA Gardner, Brigsteer with a trio of 22 month old Charolais Steers at £2020. A single stylish Limousin Steer at 19 months to £1840 from DE & SM Moorhouse, Kendal. Other Charolais Steers to £1800 for a pair from H Chapman & Son, Carnforth. Angus Steers sold to £1760 from J&JM Walmsley, Pilling and £1740 from L Parsons & Sons, Levens. Pair of British Blue steers sold to £1760 from M Shepherd & Sons, Pilling with another pair from DE&SM Moorhouse, Kendal at £1740. EJ Ward & Sons, Nether Kellet good run of cattle saw his Hereford steers top at £1700 with other Herefords at the same price from KG&LM Park, Grange over Sands. Younger store steers saw the trade of the day with 15 month old Aberdeen Angus Steers sell to £1300 from FW Rhodes & Son, Ellel, and 15 month old British Blue Steers to £1260 from JA&ME Mawson, Penrith. Friesian Steers sold to £1250 from TH Wensley & Son, Kirkham.

A trio of Welsh Black heifers took the top spot today in the heifer section from R&DM Rossall & Sons, Pilling selling to £1700. Regular Lancaster supporter WT Eastham & Sons, Goosnargh sell his Angus Heifers to £1580

not far behind also for Angus Heifers from L Parsons & Sons, Levens at £1570. Limousin heifers sold to £1540 for a stylish pair from P Cummings, Burton in Kendal. Hereford heifers saw J Fisher & Son, Whitechapel to £1510. Simmental heifers peaked at £1440 from G GU & D Swarbrick, Meathop with British Blue heifer at the same price from WT Eastham & Sons, Goosnargh.

Vendors urged to enter cattle for the next weeks sale as there seems no let up in the trade here at Lancaster on a Friday where we have the buyers to handle large numbers of cattle.

Stirks

Lancaster Mid Monthly sale of stirks saw this particular new sale format well supported with both vendors and buyers alike. Hitting the headlines today from RG Woodhouse, Scorton with 12 month old Limousin Steers to £1200. Aberdeen Angus Steers to £960 for a pen of 5 from G&D Ball & Son, Great Eccleston with other Aberdeen Angus steer to £860 from E&J Redmayne, Winmarleigh. British Blue steers to £960 from R Fare, Roseacre with others from the same home at £890. With Dairy bred steers to £860 for Montbeliardes from E&J Redmayne, Winmarleigh.

Heifer Stirks today peaked at £820 for Aberdeen Angus from R Fare, Roseacre who also had British Blue heifer stirks at £770. D&J Hay, Cockerham not far behind at £740 for a pen of 6 British Blues. W Pinder Jnr, Clitheroe at the same price this time for a pair of Limousins. Bull stirks very much in demand today with 10 month old Simmental bulls at £980 from Barlow Bros, Preston. A pen of 5 10 month old British Blue bulls from PF Lee, Over Wyresdale saw spirited bidding to £950.

OTM Cattle came next and another good entry of over 100 cattle with trade selling to extreme rates. The sell live and thrive statement definitely rings very true today with three quarters of the entry all dairy bred.

Topping this section was DJ & KA Gardner, Quernmore with a Friesian cow grossing £1700, not far behind as Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale at £1638. Fleckvieh cattle sold to £1642 or 217p/kg from JS&KM Wilson & Son, Kendal with Shorthorn Cows at £1506 from EW&CR Clegg & Sons, Stalmine. Numerous other dairy cows sold over the £1500 barrier. Biggest pence per kilo for a Dairy cow was 239.5p/kg for a Friesian from JW&DL Park, Ellel, with others Friesian cows over the 200p/kg mark at 209.5p/kg from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale and EE Thornton & Sons, Heaton.

Beef cows sold to £1632 or 221p/kg for a Charolais from J&S Holmes, Scotforth with Limousin cows to 239.5p/kg or £1516 from EJ Ward & Sons, Nether Kellett.

OTM Heifers saw Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale sell British blue to 274.5p/kg or £1756 with Angus heifer at £1546 from JD&EM JA Atkinson, Kendal. Friesian heifers to £1400 from JB & C Lamb, Thurnham with others at £1332 from the same home.

OTM Steers saw the trade of the day topping at £2088.63 for a Limousin from J Bargh, Heaton with Oxcliffe, others from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale to £1541 for a Friesian.

Just a handful of cull bulls in today, topping at £1483 from MJ Bullough, Leigh for a Limousin.

All otm cattle today averaged 190p/kg or £1280.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Great Annual Show and Sale of Hoggs with Lambs at Foot, Friday 12th May 2023.

A successful day at Junction 36 with all specifications of hoggs in big demand and keenly bid for, the pre sale show had a cracking entry forward with quality on offer being as good as seen at anywhere in the North. Credit must go to our pre sale judges Gordan Udale and Gary Rylands for doing a tremendous job, we thank them for their time and experience. The championship rosette was awarded to the first prize pen of Mule hoggs with Suffolk lambs from Winter Brothers, Clickham this much admired pen of hoggs went on to sell to £310. The reserve champion rosette was awarded to the first prize pen of Texel hoggs with Beltex lambs from EJ Ward & Sons, Nether Kellet with this pen of hoggs oozing quality and going on to sell at £400. A special thank you goes to our sponsor Alistair Thompson Sheep Shearing.

Mule hoggs with lambs met a strong trade from start to finish topping at £315 for Winter Brothers, Clickham with a much admired pen of 11 Mules hoggs with Texel lambs from Messrs Hayton, Colby selling to £290. The annual consignment from G Sowerby, Ormside always creates plenty of interest with their best selling to £280. Plenty of pens of Mule hoggs sold at £240-£260. All Mule hoggs forward average £224.

Continental hoggs met a flying trade with all forward averaging £251 and the best selling to £400 from EJ Ward & Son, Nether Kellet. First x home bred Texel hoggs from G&KM Atkinson, Colby sold to £290 with other Texel hoggs with Beltex lambs to £280 from JH&JE Taylor, Armstible. Many Continental bred hoggs with lambs sold at £260-£265.
