J36 Rural Auction Centre: New Year Pedigree Sheep Day, Saturday 7th January 2023.
North West Auctions inaugural sale of pedigree Dutch Texels, Rouge, Badger Face Texels, Blue Texels and Dutch Spotted females on behalf of their societies. The sale was deemed a great success with buyers and bidders travelling from fair and wide throughout the UK and Ireland to ensure all sheep were well sold.
Badger Face Texels

A quality entry of Badger Face Texels sold to an active ring side of buyers with shearling Gee Wiz Cappuccino from Mr P Douch, Carmarthen selling for a final bid of 2000gns, with another shearling Woodies Cornflake from Mr S Wood, Aberdeenshire achieving 1400gns. Gimmer lambs sold to 1200gns again from Mr S Wood, who sold others at 900gns.
Rouge
A consignment of pedigree Rouge shearlings and ewes from I McConnell, Dumfries, all scanned carrying twins, sold to 450gns with others at 400gns and 380gns.
Dutch Texels
The consignment of Dutch Texels from Mr G Pyman, Penrith attracted keen buyer interest, selling to 580gns for a shearling carrying twins with others selling at 500gns twice and 450gns carrying both twins and singles.
Dutch Spotted
The champion Dutch Spotted was a gimmer lamb Woodies Fandango shown, on behalf of Mr S Wood, Aberdeenshire. Llandwm Ecuador from IP Jones, Corwen awarded the reserve champion rosette. We thank our show and sale sponsors JG Animal Health and AB Europe.
Dutch spotted shearlings sold to a top price of 1600gns for an imported shearling carrying twins from IP Jones, Corwen. Closely followed by M Rowlandson, Grange Over Sands achieving 1400gns for a shearling Damon Ester scanned carrying a single. Gimmer lambs sold to 1000gns from S Wood, Aberdeen, with others at 780gns from M Rowlandson, Grange Over Sands and at 700gns from IP Jones. Recipient ewes carrying a single Dutch Spotted lamb sold at 600gns twice.
Blue Texels
The pre-sale show of Blue Texels was kindly judged by Victoria Bowring which saw a quality entry forward in all three classes. The champion rosette was awarded to the champion in-lamb shearling Saltire Blue Fancy Fire exhibited by S Moyse, Aberdeenshire, with the reserve rosette awarded to awarded to Rookies Blue Florida, exhibited by J&A Gargett, Carlisle.
Blue Texel ewes sold to 550gns for Windy Gowl scanned carrying twins on behalf of W Linton, Dumfries who sold others at 500gns twice. A large entry of shearlings sold to a new market record for Blue Texels of 3500gns for the show Champion Saltire Blue Fancy Fire scanned carrying a single lamb selling to the judge Victoria Bowring. Other shearlings sold to 1200gns for Saltire Blue Fee Fi Fo Fum scanned carrying a single from S Moyse, Aberdeenshire. J&A Gargett, Carlisle sold Rookie Blues Fancy Pants carrying twins at 800gns. E McKechnie, Wigglesworth sold a shearling Bury Town Frisky-Whiskey scanned carrying twins at 650gns. Gimmer lambs sold to 450gns on two occasions from the Tower View flock from C Cochran and I Almond, Darwen, with others achieving 350gns from H Currie, Carlisle.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: J36 NWTBC Show and Sale of Pedigree In-Lamb Texel Females and Empty Ewe Hoggs, Saturday 7th January 2023.
Texel
North West Texel Breeders Club annual show and sale of 112 individual pedigree Texel in lamb females and gimmer hoggs was once again met with a good following at Junction 36 Rural Auction Centre. The pre sale show was kindly sponsored by Agri Lloyd with thanks going to the judge Mr R Watkins of the Cwmcerrig flock. The championship rosette was awarded to M Evans of the Rhaeadar flock, with a much admired gimmer hogg sired by Garngour Envoy II out of the same bred line as Rhaeadar Best of the Best which went on to sell for 4000gns to G Oara. Rounding off a good day for the Rhaeadar flock, they were awarded reserve champion with a gimmer hogg sired by Sportsmans Dare Devil that sold for 1900gns to Thomas Ayrton of the Ayrtons flock. The gimmer shearling class was won by Procters Farm with a Sportsman Double Diamonds daughter, scanned in lamb to Procters Forever which went on to sell for 1800gns to D Morrison. Second prize in the class was consigned by PK&R Woof of the Stainton flock with a Craig Douglas Dancer daughter, which went on to sell for 1600gns.
A new sale record today at 4800gns was achieved by Gordan Gray of the Etterick flock, with a Tima gimmer shearling, sired by Claybury Dunkirk which was scanned with twins to Sadlerhead Frank the Tank and out of one of the best families on the farm. She was met with eager bidding and was purchased by JS Lodge of the Heyworth Lodge flock. Other leading prices saw in lamb gimmer shearlings sell to 1700gns from KA&R Campbell of the Cowell flock, which was sired by Hexel Dgango. All in lamb Texel gimmer shearlings sold to a market average of £814.94 and gimmer hoggs averaging £862.11.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: J36 Beltex Sheep Society Show and Sale of Pedigree In-Lamb Females & Empty Ewe Hoggs, Saturday 7th January 2023.
Beltex
The pre sale show was in the capable hands of Mr Tom Belfield, who we thank for his time and expertise. A great line up of sheep was put before our judge who awarded his champion rosette to the first prize gimmer shearling Mortons Gold Dust who was sired by Ryder Enrique ET and in lamb to Gyffin Dexter, which went on to sell for 1000gns. The reserve champion was awarded to the second place gimmer shearling, Artnagullion LIZ.G112 scanned twins to Glenview Goldie which sold to 1000gns. The sale topped at 1500gns for Utopia Des Quatre Vents Ai’d to Vickys Gladiator consigned by S Wood, Aberdeen. Other ewes sold to 1400gns for Rathbone Emily, scanned twins consigned by MR&JE Davis. There was a two-tiered trade with quality sheep with a good pedigree achieving maximum prices.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: January Online Machinery Sale

The opening online collective sale of machinery saw buyers keen to purchase all classes and types of machinery with several lots again being sold to purchasers in both Ireland and Europe.
Tractors sold to £27,100 for a Massey Ferguson 5475 4WD c/w loader direct from a local farm, others included an International 685 2wd tractor c/w loader in original condition achieving £4500 with a Massey Ferguson 35 selling to £2000. Komratsu PC60 tracked digger with a dumper achieved £3800 with Benford Dumpers selling at £3500 and £3100. Other Vehicles of interest included a John Deere Gator achieving £4000. Trailers were abundant in number and variety. An Ifor Williams tipping trailer sold to £3800, Marsten 14t trailer at £3500, Graham Edwards Livestock trailer at £1900 and a Ifor Williams Trailer at £1200. Farm Machinery sold to £2100 for a Siromer mini round baler, £1550 for a Slurry Pump, £1450 for a Tanco Root bucket, £950 4F Plough, £940 JCB grain bucket, £820 Foster D2P digger. Livestock equipment sold to £1950 for a Sheep Handling System, 10 IAE calf pens to £1000, 15ft Sheep Feed Barriers at £320, Sheep Race at £560, Logic Sheep Snacker at £460 and a Cattle Crush at £440.

Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep, Monday 9th January 2023.
Prime Hoggs
An entry in excess of 700 prime hoggs were forward at Lancaster was met with minimal demand from buyers with an overall market average of 223p/kg. Heavy weighted hoggs continue to lead the way with the consignment of Texels from R&DL Cornthwaite, Nateby selling to £139, £138, £132, £129.50 and £128. Other heavy weight Texel hoggs to £129 from KA Purtill, Wigan and £124 on a number of occasions from E Hartley, Hornby, JE Parkinson & son, Quernmore, Sam Ayrton, Thurnham and Bargh Contractors, Heaton, plenty more sold in the £120 region. Upland heavy weight lambs saw Mashams sell to £130.50 from T&D Wright, Roeburndale East who had other pens to £122. Other heavy weight Mashams sold to £119 from WI&A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale. Heavy weight Mules peaked at £118 from JW Cornall & Son, Bleasdale. Quality butcher Beltex bred lambs sold to a top of 300p/kg or £123 from WJ&R Parkinson, Garstang who had other pens to £120 and £119. Blue Texels sold to 275p/kg from F&SG Sanderson & Son, Woodplumpton.

An entry of 68 cast sheep were forward today selling to a very similar trade with Texel cross ewes selling to £130 from CA Fletcher, Whitechaple. Teeswater ewes sold to £120 from DM Eames, Abbeystead with Mule ewes peaking at £118 from H Hesketh & Sons, Longton. Pens of big fat Mule ewes were regularly around the £110 mark. Hill sheep saw Swaledale tups to £85 from DM Eames, Abbeystead with Cheviot ewes to £76 from KM&KJ Curwen, Abbeystead.

Pigs
The opening of pigs saw a bumper entry forward with new and returning vendors from throughout the Northern Counties and Scotland. Well finished pigs sold to a premium with buyers representing the catering retail and butcher trade presented keen to fulfil orders.
Prime gilts sold to £165 for a trio of large white x pietrain from JM Navesey, Darwen who sold another trio at £162. Pietrain x gilts from D Nicholson, Cockermouth sold to £155 with others at £145 from Whiteknowe Farm, Dumfries. MP Tattersall, Langholm sold Duroc x gilts at £138. Lighter weight gilts sold to £98 for large blacks from H Kent, Cockerham with Oxford Sandy and Blacks to £88 from GM&DJ Pye, Arkholme. Gilts sold to 162p/kg from JM Navesey, Darwen.
Prime hoggs sold to £175 for Large White x from J Stott, Crosscrake with others at £172 from JM Navesey, Darwen. All purchased by Browns Quality Meats as a treat for their customers at their Lindal Farm Shop.
Cull sows sold to £95 for a Large White from SP Pheonix, Preston with Tamworths selling to £85 from R Holmes, Inskip. Top sows this sale reached 62p/kg from SP Pheonix, Preston.
Several cull boars forward with a top prize of £70 for a Large White from SP Pheonix, Preston. Stores and Weaners were forward in huge numbers with the largest entry to date. 82 weaners sold to £51 for a pen of Royal Landrace weaners from Dumfries House, Cumnock. Berkshire x weaners sold to £26 with saddleback x to £26. Others generally £10-£20 depending on quality and breed. 38 Stores sold to £35 for Saddleback x from D Clarke, Woodplumpton who sold others at £30.


Prime Hoggs
There was an entry of 938 prime hoggs forward at J36 which saw the trade inline with other markets as the demand for prime hoggs is currently limited following the festive period, with number of prime hoggs continuing to come forward as with vendors understandably wanting sheep off the land. There was an overall market average of 215p/kg with 45-50kg hoggs averaging 225p/kg. A consignment of Beltex hoggs from GM&A Jackson, Little Eccleston sold 44kg lambs to £132 and 43kg to £130 with Texels from the same home to £126. Heavy weight hoggs sold to a top of £129 for Suffolks from JH Towers & Sons, Tunstall. Continentals sold to £129 from LM Berry, Cartmel Fell followed by other Continentals to £127 from RD Holland & Co, Millom. Plenty more heavy weights sold in the region of £120. Mule peaked at £112.50 from P Whitton & Son, Burneside followed by others to £112 from EW&JR Parkinson, Dunsop Bridge.

Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Pigs, Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep, Tuesday 10th January 2023.464 ewes were forward selling to a very similar trade to the previous week with smaller leaner ewes a pound or two less, Texels sold to a top of £160 from H Chapman & Son, Middleton with pure bred ewes regularly selling at £140 to £150. Leicester ewes sold to £122 from K Smith, Kendal. Mule ewes sold to a top of £146 from KA Richards & Son, Howgill. The best end Mules were regularly selling at the £110-£115 mark, fit medium ewes were £85-£90. Mashams sold to a top of £110 from MA&JA Winn, Burneside. A weathered show of hill ewes were forward, Rough Fells sold to £79 from EJ Hodgson & Son, Lambrigg with other pens selling to £72 from RJ&OB Simpson, Longsleddale, Swaledales topped at £72 from SJ&J Hodgson & Son, Colton. Cast rams were forward in more numbers, Leicester sold to £148 with Texels selling to £140 from JC Dunning, Orton. A lot of rams forward were showing signs of the weather and these types were meeting a little less demand.

In Lamb Gimmer Hoggs
The sale of Continental and Mule hoggs behalf of EI, EA and TW Wilson, Guide Farm. The sale commenced with the in-lamb Cheviot Mule hoggs that sold to £135. Continental in lamb hoggs sold to £134 and £130 twice. Mule gimmer hoggs topped the trade selling to £140, with other pens to £132 and £130 three times. The consignment averaged £125.05.

Store Hoggs
As to be expected with the continued wet weather and the current prime hogg trade things for the sale were not looking to optimistic and with reports of shortage of buyers in other markets this week J36 bucked the trend with over fifteen buyers forward looking to purchase hoggs. The trade saw short keep hoggs good to sell and eagerly bid for with buyers cautious of weathered hoggs especially leaner types and small hill hoggs. The sale peaked at £104 from WR Clarke and Partners, Yealand for strong texel hoggs with others to £101 from W & J Penny, Kirkby in Furness. Plenty of pens of strong hoggs into the eighties. Medium keep hoggs in the sixities with smaller hoggs depending on size and quality of breeding.

Calves
The weekly sale of calves and weanlings had an entry in excess of fifty with the calf trade starting to turn a corner and improve with more purchasers ringside. Once again strong calves are in most demand with a couple of consignments of weaned calves leading the way. Sale peaked at £535 and £515 for Fleckvieh bulls from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green with Friesian bull stirks to £470 and £435. A consignment of Hereford weanlings from TE & MM Kidd, Quernmore sold bulls to £410 and £385 with heifers to £340 and £300. Milk calves met more demand selling to a top of £380 for a British Blue bull from JP & C Robson, Garstang. This was followed by the consignment from JE & S Seedall, Mellor selling Charolais bulls to £370 and British Blues to £360. At £340 was a British Blue bull from TE & A Garth, Bleasdale. Aberdeen Angus bull calves sold to £265 from F & JM Kelsall & Son, Bleasdale. Plenty more beef calves sold in the mid two hundreds. Dairy bull calves saw Black and Whites to £125 from JP & C Robson, Garstang.

157 steers sold to a top price of £1780 for a pair of Charolais steers from RH Dodgson, Burton in Lonsdale who sold others at £1720 and £1710. British Blue x steers sold to £1680 from K&DE Woodhouse, Ellel with Limousins selling to £1660 from P Whitton & Son, Burneside. Native sired steers sold to £1690 for an Aberdeen Angus from J&M Cockett, Ingleton with others at £1520 from D Vose, Wigan. Herefords achieved £1480 from J Prest & Son, Bay Horse. Dairy bred steers sold to £1460 for a British Friesian from L Parson & Son, Levens with Fleckvieh achieving £1440 from J Lamb, Glasson. All steers forward today averaged £1249. Heifers averaged £1203 with a top price of £1540 for a British Blue x from TG&B Todd, Sedbergh. Limousins sold to £1430 from L Parsons & Son, Levens and Charolais’s to £1400 from WA Hodgson, Whinfell. Native sire heifers sold to £1490 for Aberdeen Angus’s from J&M Cockett, Ingleton with others at £1450 from JM Shepherd, New Biggin and £1440 from D&G Smith, Wigan. Hereford heifers sold to £1410 from JW Atkinson, Bentham.

OTM Cattle
112 cull cows sold to a fast and better trade with all so averaging 185p/kg and £1193. Beef cows sold to a top 244.5p/kg for a Limousin from RG&H Preece, Roeburndale closely followed by British Blues from EJ Ward & Sons, Nether Kellett achieving 237p/kg with an Aberdeen Angus from WS Burrow & Son, Carnforth selling to 229p/kg. Other well bred beef cows were regularly 190-210p/kg. Dairy cows sold to a top price of 231p/kg for a young Fleckvieh from JS&KM Wilson & Son, Kendal with Montbeliarde selling to 217p/kg from WR&CM Lawrenson, Winmarleigh and Holstein Friesians to 214p/kg from AW&AM Park & Son, Ellel. Heavy well fleshed dairy cows were regularly 170-190p/kg, with mediums 150-165p/kg and the leanest parlour type cows 120130p/kg. Top grossing cow today was a Holstein Friesian from AW&AM Park & Son, Ellel achieving £1716 with an additional six dairy cows over £1600 and twenty cow over £1500.
OTM heifers sold to 259p/kg and £1429 for a Limousin from Mason & Gardner, Ingleton with steer to 229p/kg and £1392 from J Prest & Son, Bay Horse and bulls selling to 264p/kg and £1750 for a Limousin from D&A Nicholson, Ulverston.

Top price of £2000 was achieved on two occasions, firstly for a Holstein Friesian heifer from B&V Swann, Brindle and then for a Fleckvieh x from R&K Jenkinson, Pilling who sold others

at £1900. Cows sold to £1750 for a third calved cow from R&K Jenkinson with a three quartered Holstein Friesians cow from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe achieving £1650.
