A smaller entry of spring lambs saw 41kg lambs achieve £146 from WA&LM Jenkinson, Stalmine with other pens from the same good home achieving £145. An overall market averaged of 350p/kg was achieved.

Prime Pigs flying at NWA J36
Prime pigs sold to another flying trade topping at £252 for a pair of Pietrain x Saddleback hogs from PK&R Woof, Stainton who sold gilts at £205. J Stott Jnr, Kendal sold the best of his gilts at £242. Pietrain gilts from T Hornsby, Silloth sold at £240, who also sold boars at £210. Top pence per kilo this sale was 255p/kg achieved by J Stott with others regularly 210p/kg-250p/kg.
Stores sold to £78 for Large White x from A&E Clarkson, Cockerham with weaners from SP Phoenix achieving £54.
More prime pigs are needed to satisfy our ten regular buyers.
Sheep With Lambs At Foot
The sheep and lamb trade improves week on week but with the dreadful weather some potential buyers are holding off for the grass to grow. J&M Wilson, Selside has a good day selling Texel one crop ewes with twin Texel lambs to £300. Strong Texel ewes with twin lambs were regularly selling at the £240-£260 mark. Aged Mule ewes with Texel twins topped at £200 from M Moorhouse, Field Broughton. More shearlings were on offer today, with a busier ring side of buyers forward today looking for younger outfits. Home bred Texel shearlings from J&M Wilson, Selside with Texel twin lambs sold to £300, with Scotch Mule shearlings from G&ID Postlethwaite, Howgill selling to a top of £215. A run of pure Beltex ewes with Blue Texel lambs from J Bailey, Leyburn saw

A super pen of spring lambs from WA&LM Jenkinson, Stalmine saw Texel x lambs sell to £150 with others at £140 on two occasions. Handy weighted lambs sold to 359p/kg with a market average of 352p/kg. we have butchers orders each week for spring lambs.

Prime Hoggs
The hogg trade keeps improving week on week, with heavy weights taking the biggest jump on the week. Top price of £182 was achieved twice for Texels from WG&D Wilkinson, Torver and AW Crowe, Witherslack. Super heavy Continental hoggs were regularly selling at the £175-£180 mark. Suffolk hoggs sold to a top of £165 from AG Butler, Hambleton. Heavy Mule hoggs sold to £154 from K Hartley, Winster. More hill bred hoggs were in offer today with Cheviots selling to a top of £153 from Stockdale Farms and Scotch Black Faces to £131 from M&YS Barker, Halton. Meated light hoggs were in super demand with 38kg Texel hoggs selling to £123 from D&J Woof, Down Biggin. A ring full of scotch hoggs sold to £103 from T Williamson, Askham in Furness. All types of hoggs are required for our busy ring side of buyers.

Heavy ewes were in serious demand and a real shortage of them today, those forward selling to £242 and £230 for Suffolks from AR Edmondson, Ulverston. Texel sold to £194 from WA&LA Jenkinson, Stalmine with others generally £170-£190. First cross ewes sold to £176 for Suffolks x from LF Horton & Son, Leigh and Texel x to £168 from R&E Ladds, Kendal. The best heavy Mules £130-£145 topping at £148 from WT Whittaker & Son, Nether Kellet. Hill bred ewes sold to £130 for Rough Fells from E&K Bland, Tebay, Cheviots to £128 from S Thompson, Flookburgh, Swaledales £119 from AR Edmondson, Ulverston and Herdwicks £82 from CS Long, Backbarrow. Younger bull calves sold to £395 for British Blue x from HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick with others mainly £250-£280 and the youngest £180-£220. Dairy bull calves sold to £85 for young Shorthorns from JR Handley, Whinfell with Fleckviehs at £75.
Heifer calves sold to £350 for Limousin x again from Langley Park Farms, Millom with others at £335. Rearing heifers sold to £300 for British Blue x from HJ Robinson, Preston Patrick.

A pure bred Charolais from P Metcalfe, Denny Beck sold at £2050. A small show of heifers with calves were forward with Aberdeen Angus’s with Angus calves from TJ Lloyd, Settle selling to £1880. British Blue cows with young Blonde calves sold to £1700 from MJ Whitworth, Bolton Le Sands with others from the same good home selling to £1650.

Store Cattle
Store Cattle trade goes into another gear with a flying trade from start to finish. Stronger feeding cattle met plenty of demand and were often £1600-£1700. A Parthenaise heifer sold to £1700 from S Gelderd, Ulverston. Dairy bred Limousin bullocks sold to £1680 from TW Nelson & Sons, Stainton. Grazing cattle saw a new demand with turn out just over the horizon. 16 month old Limousin bullocks sold to £1500 from R&J Dodgson, Natland. Charolais heifer sold to £1480 from MJ Waller, Lupton. A run of well finished dairy British Blue heifers from C Wilson, Witherslack sold to £1415. LA&M Lambert, Lupton sold a run of Simmental bullocks at 14 months to a top of £1200. More purchasers are around the ring looking for yearling cattle. No real show stoppers forward, Limousin bullocks sold to £1160 from J Turnball, Meathorp and £1150 from MW&MR Black, Staveley who also sold 10 month old British Blue heifers to £1160. A pen of four Limousin bullocks from SW Atkinson & Son, Crook sold to £1135 at ten months old.

Cull cows maintained the high rates of recent sales with a top price of 259.5p/kg for a Limousin from JH Bland & Son, Levens with others at 254.5p/kg from W Atkinson, Selside. Beef cows were regularly 195-225p/kg. Dairy cows sold to 217.5p/kg from JM Barton & Son, Lupton with others at 204.5p/kg. Medium cows regularly 180p/kg-195p/kg with parlour types 165p/kg-175 p/kg. All cows today averaged 189p/kg.
Top grossing cow today was a heavy weight Aberdeen Angus from RJ&J Gardner, Kendal achieving £2021 with endless cows over £1500. Dairy cows topped at £1466 from C Preston, Millom. Cull bulls sold to 194.5p/kg from LM&JH Bowes, Orton and £1544 from SJ&J Hodgson & Son, Colton.

Strong weanable bull calves sold to £535 for a Charolais x from WG Farms Ltd, Cockerham. Closely followed by a pair of Hereford x bulls from TE&M Kidd, Ellel with Simmental x selling to £490 from S Ayrton, Thurnham. Strong rearing calves were in keen demand, selling to £470 from Wallbank Farms Ltd, Over Wyresdale with others at £435 from AW&AM Park & Son, Ellel and £430 from RT Halhead, Cockerham. Strong native bred calves sold to £410 from returning vendors Lawson Farm Ltd, Cockerham with Hereford to £400 from TE&M Kidd, Ellel. A very small number of dairy bulls were forward, a well reared Swedish Red and White from WG Farm, Cockerham achieved £245, with young rearing calves selling to £112 for a Black and White from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale.

Lancasters weekly store cattle sale saw an increase in number with 234 cattle going through the main ring, with the main of the cattle on offer today being 20 months and under. The bigger older end was again in high demand with regular vendor L Parson & Sons, Levens hitting top spot this week with a 23 month old Limousin steer at £1920. Local vendor K&DE Woodhouse, Ellel saw his quality run of cattle top at £1760 for a pair of 24 month old British Blue steers, with the British Blue steers from J&JM Walmsley, Pilling at £1760. There are always plenty of customers for native cattle at Lancaster with Aberdeen Angus steers to £1810 for a pen of four from TC Whiteside & Son, Pilling with others from the same village at £1780 from J&JM Walmsley. A trio of Simental steers sold at £1800 from EJ&PE Burrow, Storth. Charolais steers saw SW&K Metcalfe, Whittington to £1760. Blonde steers to £1520 from C&AJ Woodhouse, Bootle. Dairy bred steers saw a boost in trade today with a fresh face ring side, toping at £1380 from EE Thornton & Sons, Heaton for a ring full of five. Not far behind was R&E Ladds, Kendal at £1340 also for a pen of five with Montbeliarde steers at £1360 from MJ Waller, Lupton. Heifer stores saw EJ Hodgson, Lambrigg sell a pair of Limousins to £1700, with other Limousin heifers to £1620
from RW&SE Suddell, Garstang. Charolais heifers sold to £1700 from SW&K Metcalfe, Whittingham. Also selling Charolais heifers were EJ Ward & Son, Nether Kellet achieving £1550 for a pen of four. Aberdeen Angus heifers sold to £1660 from TJ Robinson, Milnthorpe who also had other Aberdeen Angus heifers at £1550. K&DE Woodhouse, Ellel continued their good day selling at Lancaster with a pair of British Blues to £1580, with WT Eastham, Goosnargh also selling British Blue heifers to £1570 for a ring full of six. Younger grazing type steers today saw an animated trade, with the grazing men out in full force. 15 month old British Blue steers sold to £1280 from JA&ME Mawson, Orton with others from the same home at £1240. R&J Parkinson, Preesall sold 12 month Simental steers to £1200, this home also sold 12 month old Shorthorn heifers to £1140, with others 12-14 month old heifers at £1120. Venders are urged to take advantage of the current cosmic trade and enter cattle with confidence for Lancaster next Friday.

Once again NWA Lancaster has proved itself to be the leading Lancashire market for cull cows, with an overall market averaged today of 207.1p/kg for 107 sold.
A small number of beef cows forward today sold to 249.5p/kg for a Simmental x from JE&AC Clarke & Son, Melling. Closely followed by a Limousin x from EJ&P Burrow, Storth achieving 239.5p/kg. Other heavy well flesh beef cows were regularly 220p/kg-230p/kg, with keen interest in those suitable for feeding. Top grossing beef cow today was a Simmental from JO&P O Connell, Mellow achieving £1973 with Barlow Bros, Croston close behind with a Simmental at £1897, with another at £1739 from AJ&AC Clarke & Son, Melling. Heavy well fleshed dairy cows sold to 244.5p/kg for a Norwegian Red and White x from EW&R Towers, Hornby who also sold both Fleckvieh and Montbeliarde at 234.5p/kg. Holstein Friesian sold to 229.5p/kg from WN&D Smith & Sons, Cockerham. Heavy well fleshed dairy cows were regularly 215p/kg-225p/kg, with mediums 185p/kg-200p/kg and the leaner parlour sorts 140p/kg-160p/kg, depending on quality and type.
Top grossing dairy cow today was a Holstein Friesian from R&A Jolleys, Cabus achieving £1668 closely followed by T Taylor, Woodplumpton achieving £1665.
Heifers sold to 254p/kg for a Limousin x from JH Atkinson & Partners, Selside who sold other 249.5p/kg, with 244.5p/kg achieved for a Limousin x from EJ Ward and Son, Nether Kellet. OTM dairy heifer sold at 237.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from H Wight & Son, Kendal who sold other 234.5p/kg from R&E Ladds, Kendal and SW&K Metcalfe & Son, Whittington. Top grossing OTM heifer was a Holstein Friesian from H Wright, Kendal at £1762.
