J36 Rural Auction Centre: October Online Machinery Sale, Friday 7th October to Monday 10th October 2022.
The monthly collective sale of Tractors, Vehicles, Farm Machinery and Equipment saw over 1200 lots offered for sale with purchases from as far a field as Ireland and Poland once again actively sourcing stock.
Over 40 Tractors and Vehicles were entered catering for the vintage enthusiasts to the modern mechanice. The sale peaked at £20,00 for a JCB Loadall, direct from a local farm with a New Holland 8340 achieving £10,300. Other tractors included a John Deere 2850 selling at £10,00, MF165 £5500, Case 1494 c/w loader £4950, Deutz DX605 £4100, Leyland245 £1950, Ferguson35 £1650.
Plant machinery sold to £6200 for a 4T tracked digger with another achieving £4800. A 2T mini digger sold for £3400. A John Deere Gator sold at £4500 and a Honda ATV £1000.
A wide variety of trailers sold to £3500 for a Frazer dropside trailer, a 12ft IW cattle trailer sold for £2800, 30ft bale trailer £2600, IW plant trailer £2500, IW calf trailer £2400, GE 12ft livestock trailer £2400.
Livestock equipment sold to £3800 for 37 calf pens, £2400 IAE cattle foot trimming crush, 18ft sheep race £780, cattle crush £520, 21 cow mats £480, cattle feed hopper £480, lamb creep feeder £390.
Other items of interest included a shepherd’s hut selling at £3050, Kuhn straw chopper £2500, malgar 1300 tanker £2100, ATV topper £1850, logic weed weeper £1750, power harrow £1050, Bamford hedge cutter £100, haybob £980, Dowdeswell plough £950, flemming topper £830.

Prime Lambs
Lancaster Auction had an increased entry of just shy of 800 prime lambs forward today with the trade slightly easier than expected with reports nationwide of larger numbers of lambs in markets. Heavy weight lambs were a shade easier this morning, peaking at £131 for Texels from AG Butler, Hambleton followed by £130 from DR Preston, Caton, £129 from S&J Cornthwaite, Brookhouse and £125 from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof with plenty more pens in the early one twenties. Handy weighted lambs today seemed a sharper trade with better quality ones in more demand and selling to a peak of 290p/kg from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof followed by 285p/kg from Kevin Purtill, Wigan.

The market topped at £148 for a Texel x ewe from B&SE Carter, Ellel with other Texel x ewes to £120 from J France, Pilling and £120 from B&M Slater, Pilling with the consignment from Bargh Contractors, Heaton with Oxcliffe to £118 and £116. Leicester ewes sold to £122 and £116 from AC&K Pye, Abbeystead. Mule ewes peaked at £100 from DR Preston, Caton with plenty of pens of Mule ewes selling around the £90 mark.

The fortnightly sale of store lambs had an entry in excess of 150 forward, good quality lambs regularly sold in excess of the £80 mark with a consignment of Texel and Beltex x lambs from PD Pye, Over Wyresdale to £87, £83 and £81 with Cheviots from the same home to £79. Texel lambs from PD Anderton, Scorton sold to £81 and Texel x lambs from SE&J Gorst, Littledale sold to £80 and £79.50.

Pigs
Prime Pigs sell to £220 and 209p/kg at NWA J36

The opening sale of pigs for October saw an extremely fast and competitive trade was an abundance of new and returning customers keen to secure all classes and types of pigs. The sale commenced with prime pigs which saw a top price of £220 achieved on two occasions firstly for a Large White x gilts from T Hornby, Silloth with a Saddleback x Pietrain from J Stott, Kingsland also achieving this price. Other pigs to break the £200 barrier included a Large White x Saddleback gilt from PK & R Woof, Stainton. Falling just short of this price barrier was a trio of Berkshire x gilts from GC&G Taylor, Crook achieving £198. Other well finished and well bred gilts regularly sold at £150-£180.
Prime hoggs sold to £175 for a Saddleback x from PK&R Woof, Stainton with prime boars selling to £152 for middle Whites from J Hadwin,
Broughton in Furness. Top pence per kilo today was 209p/kg achieved for a pair of Pietrain x gilts from Wendy Stamper, Chipping with others regularly selling at 175-190p/kg with an overall market averaged of 170p/kg. Cull cows sold to £82 and 51p/kg from B Capstick, Sedbergh. A small entry of store pigs sold to £58 for Pietrain x boars from AP Kiley, Hawes with Saddleback gilts selling to £52 from Stoney Lane Farm, Nateby who also sold Saddleback boars at £48. More pigs are needed to fulfil buyers demand.

Cheviot Mules sold to a top of £111 from MA Barnes, Whinfell. Mule ewes were back to over the one hundred pound mark topping at £107 from WH Whittaker & Son, Nether Kellett with the best regularly selling in the mid to late nineties. More hill ewes on offer with Leicester ewes sold to £130 from RW&SA Nicholson, Lupton with Cheviots from the same home selling to a top of £84. Rough Fells sold to £60 from BJ Bainbridge, Tebay with the best of the Swaledales selling to £58 from Braestead Farms, Patterdale and a pen of nineteen selling to £57 from WJ&I France & Son, Chipping.

Calves & Stirks
The fortnightly sale of calves at J36 include the Semex and Norbreck Autumn show of calves 56 days and under. A special thank you to our sponsors and to the judge Peter Fell, Ulverston for his time and expertise. The championship rosette was awarded to the first-place continental bull, this much admired British Blue bull was from J Hornby and Son, Barrow in Furness which went onto sell for £580 to the judge. The reserve championship
was awarded to the first prize continental heifer a British Blue from A Pickthall, New Hutton that went onto sell for £310.
The trade saw good quality calves a very strong trade with good quality British Blue bulls the flavour of the day. The consignment of British Blue bull calves from A Pickthall, New Hutton met plenty of demand selling to £470, £440, £420, £400 and £395. Other leading prices saw the run from J Hornby & Son, Barrow in Furness sell British Blue bulls sell to £450 and £405. This was followed by plenty of strong good quality British Blue bulls selling in the mid three hundreds.
The heifer trade saw a run of British Blue heifers from A Pickthall, New Hutton sell to £330, £310 and £300. Heifers in general met a stickier trade as did smaller younger beef calves.

The stirk trade topped for a pair of British Blue heifers from Saunders and Noble at £620 a run of weaned British Blue bullocks from EW&R Towers, Hornby sold to a top of £535 with others selling to £530, this home also sold Fleckvieh bullocks to £360.

Suckler Calves
A catalogue entry of 520 saw a cracking yard of calves, the best end was a dream to sell with younger sorts selling to an attracting trade and all vendors leaving with a smile on their face. The pre-sale show was kindly sponsored by Wadland Finance with the judging was in the capable hands of Mr R Matterson, Bootle who we thank for his time and expertise. After much time and deliberation, he awarded his championship rosette to the first prize bullock consigned by M&D Hatton, Broughton Mills with this British Blue Bullocks going on to make £1180. The reserve championship rosette was awarded to the first prize heifer from TW Gorst, Crook which went on to sell for £1170.
Outside of the show the suckler calf trade was fast from start to finish with bulls in particularly meeting high demands. The bullock trade saw a top of £1290 from D&A Nicholson, Ulverston with Aberdeen Angus bullocks selling to £1230 from TM&D Dobson, Crossthwaite. All Charolais bullocks were a strong trade with the best end at £1100 from T Longton & Son, Quernmore. The best suckler bred bulls sold either side of the £1000 mark. Limousin bulls sold to £1200 from JM Kelsall & Son, Quernmore with Charollais selling to £1130 for a pen of five from C&S Dickinson, Ulverston. Twenty-five Limousin and Charolais bulls averaged an impressing £1010.
The heifer trade topped at £1210 for a sweet six month old British Blue heifer from TW Gorst, Gilpin with Limousin to £1200 from D&A Nicholson, Ulverston and others to £1180 from NA&J Temple, Ulpha. The best bred heifers were regularly selling at the £980-£1000 mark with the strong well grown suckler heifers regularly selling around the £820-£880 mark.

Another increased entry of cull cows saw 82 forward, selling to an overall market averaged of 158p/kg with a large purporting of parlour type dairy cows and weathered beef cows forward. Heavy well fleshed beef cows sold to 214p/kg for a Saler from A Dixon with Limousins selling to 207.5p/kg from SW Atkinson & Son and 204p/kg from RHM&S Boyren. Other beef cows regularly sold at 175-190p/kg. Dairy cows sold to 184.5p/kg for a Montbeliarde from JW&E Woof & Son with a Holstein Friesian selling to 179.5p/kg from Jenkin Cragg Farms and other dairy cows generally 140-155p/kg with the leanest 105-120p/kg. Top grossing beef cow today was £1746 achieved for an Aberdeen Angus from RJ&J Gardner with dairy cows to £1475 for a Swedish Red and White from WB Winder & Co.
OTM heifers sold to 201.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from Jenkin Cragg Farms who sold others at £1322 OTM steers sold to 174.5p/kg and £1219 for a Hereford from DJ Dickinson with a British Blue bull from MA&JA Winn selling at 191.5p/kg and £2018.

The weekly sale of calves and weanlings had an increased entry of 80 forward, selling to the busiest crown ring side seen for some time with calves sold to a larger number of active buyers. A consignment of British Blue weanlings from Messrs Millican, Newby saw bulls to £450 twice and £445 with heifers from the same home twice selling to £325. Aberdeen Angus bull calves from the same home achieved £405. Quality milk calves continue to be in big demand with British Blue bulls to £435 from JM&MH France & Son, Littledale and £425 from AD&R Milner, Claughton on Brock. A consignment of weanlings from G&ME Woodhouse & Son saw an Aberdeen Angus bull calves to £385 and £365 with British Blue heifers to £350 and £340. Plenty of strong beef calves sold in the mid to late two hundreds. Young and smaller beef calves were met with limited demand due to the everincreasing costs. Diary bull calves saw weanling Fleckvieh to £270 and £250 from EW&R Tower, Hornby with Black and White from the same home to £205 and £180 from Messrs Millican, Newby.

The weekly store cattle sale at Lancaster saw 237 cattle go through the main ring with a plainer and smaller show of cattle on offer. All steers forward averaged £1081 with heifers averaging £1005. Good fed and bigger cattle today were a flying trade with smaller weathered cattle harder to place. Top of the league table today saw a pen of three well grown Hereford steers to £1690 from WS Burrows & Son, Silverdale who also sold a pair of strong Herefords to £1660. L Goodier & Son, Preston had a good day selling a pair of cracking Charolais steers to £1550 with British Blue steers from J Lamb, Old Glasson to £1460 and £1450 from KG&LM Park, Grange Over Sands. EW&CR Clegg, Stalmine good run of cattle saw Angus steers to £1440 and Shorthorns to £1300.
Friesian steers from L Parsons & Son, Levens sold to £1370 and J Lamb, Glasson achieved £1230. KH&LM Park, Grange Over Sands topped the heifer section today with British Blues to £1470 with others to £1360 from R&DM Rossall & Sons, Pilling. Aberdeen Angus heifers always have a good following at Lancaster selling to £1460 from L Parsons & Sons, Levens with others to £1300 from KH&D Holden & Son, Pilling. A smart Limousin heifer sold to £1400 from S&CJ Handley, Westhouse with other Limousins to £1340 from D&G Smith, Wigan. Shorthorns today achieved £1270 for a pen of three from EW&CR Clegg, Stalmine. Charollais sold to £1170 from R&C Parkinson, Hambleton.

OTM Cattle
The weekly sale of OTM cattle saw a slight increase in numbers with 136 through the bottom ring with the weather now turning to an autumnal feel.
Top grossing cow today saw T&CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping sell Friesian cows to £1564.43 with Lawsons Farm Ltd, Cockerham not far behind at £1517.10 also for Friesians. Other notable prices for Friesians saw K&DE Woodhouse, Ellel at £1415 and TC Baldwin, Forton at £1406. Ayrshire cattle saw a top price of £1254 from D&K Haworth, Hambleton. Beef bred OTM cows saw Limousins to £1540.44 from A Clark & Johnston, Windermere. Also breaking the £1500 barrier was P Whitton & Son, Kendal at £1529 also for Limousins with British Blue bred cows to £1398 from B&SE Carter, Ellel.
Prices per kilo saw Limousins to 207.5p/kg from P Whitton & Sons, Kendal with others at 201.5p/kg from the same home with British Blues to 199p/kg from B&SE Carter, Ellel. Friesian cows sold to 194.5p/kg from K&DE

OTM heifers saw KH Knowles, Preston selling to £1419.82 or 221p/kg for a Friesian with others Friesians to 191.5p/kg from J&N Hull & Son, Winmarleigh.
Cast steers today saw Limousins to 244.5p/kg or £1491.45 for a 610 kilo beast. Top grossing steers saw a British Blue to £1614 from KH Knowles, Preston with other Friesians from the same home at £1455.
A few more cast bulls about today saw A Dixon & Son, Kendal sell a monster of a bull to £1836.77. R Gibson & Son, Kendal sold a Belted Galloway bull to £1333.20
