Weekly Report and Newsletter- 15th July 2022 Lancaster Auction Mart: Fortnightly Sale of Dairy Cattle, Friday 15th July 2022. Dairy Cattle The fortnightly sale of dairy cattle at North West Auctions Lancaster once again saw a fast and competitive trade for all classes and types. With new customers in attendance from throughout the northern counties. Alongside strong local support. New calved cows sold to a top price of £2120 for a red and white second calver been Ghyllsaide Cynthia Red 48 from Messrs France Brothers, Littledale. Today's sale included the final part dispersal of Holstein Friesian cows on behalf of B Mallinson & Son, Levens. Freshly calved fifth lactation cows sold to £1900 with others at £1620. Mid lactation cows sold to £1580 with others regularly £1400 to £1500. Mid lactation heifers sold for £1720. The sale concluded with a consignment of young stock on behalf of Messrs Sharp, Millom. Bulling heifers sold to £1140, £1120 and £1020 (3). Yearling heifers sold to £980 with keen interest in all classes of young stock with 8month-old heifers selling to £1700. The next sale of dairy cattle in on Friday 29th July which will include the milking portion dispersal of Fleckvieh and British Friesain cows and heifers on behalf of J Scott & Co, Cartmel.
Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Spring Lambs and Cast Sheep, Monday 11th July 2022. Spring Lambs There was a smaller entry of spring lambs forward this week following on from the Qurbani festival at the weekend. There was uncertainty how the trade would be following the weekend but an entry of 506 forward sold to an overall market average of 286p/kg with all lambs forward in the market averaging £122. Texel lambs from B & M Slater, Chipping lead the way selling to £148 at 46kg. Also selling to £148 was a heavy weight Texel lamb from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale with others selling to £143 from R Doran, Winmarleigh. A good run of Beltex
and Texel lambs from JS Horner, Ingleton selling to £145, £142 and £141. Plenty more lambs sold in the one hundred and thirties. Buyers continue to look for well fleshed lambs. Kevin Purtill kindly donated a lamb to be sold for the Prader-Willi syndrome charity that sold for £145 purchased by George Blackledge. With donations added in there was in the region of three hundred pounds raised for this charity. A big thank you to all involved. Cast Sheep The heat was slightly off on the cull sheep trade following some fantastic trades on the build up to the festival. A smaller entry of 71 forward this week saw the trade peak at £157 from TM Townley, Over Wyresdale for a Suffolk ewe. Continental ewes sold to £130 from Ripley School, Lancaster with plenty selling in the one hundred and twenties. Mule ewes sold to £120 from T & EA Garth, Bleasdale with plenty more pens of strong mule ewes selling in the late one hundred and teens. J36 Rural Auction Centre: Weekly Sale of Spring Lambs and Cast Sheep. Fortnightly Sale of Pigs. Tuesday 12th July 2022. All Classes of Pigs Prime pigs sold to a sharp trade with the best selling to £192 twice from PK&R Woof, Stainton. Well finished prime pigs regularly sold around the 145-150p/kg or £120-£130 a head. More interest in sows today with them selling to a top of £92 from RJ&R Holden, Silecroft. 40 weaners forward with plenty of people keen to purchase, Saddleback weaners sold to £52 from B Capstick, Sedbergh. Prime Lambs The weekly sale of prime lambs had a reduced entry of 951 forward. The trade saw good quality and well fleshed heavy weight lambs in strongest demand with commercial lambs noticeably less, as many firms are quiet this week after a busy weekend for the festival with some firms only operating less days this week. Heavy weight Texel’s at 56kg sold to £158 from DM & D Cook, Ulverston with others from this home selling to £154.50, £153 and £150.50. A run of heavy weight lambs from F & SA Edmondson, Ulverston sold Texel lambs to £157 and Suffolk’s to £155. A heavy weight Texel from JT Proctor, Grange over Sands sold to £156. A pen of 50kg lambs from R Oldfield, Carnforth sold to £154. The weekly consignment of heavy weight 50kg lambs from DE & SM Moorhouse, Natland were eagerly bid for selling to £150.50 with other pens to £148.50 and £148 twice. More heavy weight lambs are required at J36 with plenty of pens regularly selling in the one hundred and forties. Better
conformation lambs continue to sell in the region of 300p/kg and more with them peaking at 342p/kg for a smart Beltex lamb from FI & ME Little, Kendal. Cast Sheep A reduced entry of cast sheep forward with all types selling to a sharper trade than expected, buyers are now requesting for sheep to be clipped. Ewes sold to a top of £170 for Beltexs from CM Jennings, Selside with Suffolks selling to £148 from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe. Plenty of good Continental ewes sold in the £130 - £140 mark. Mule ewes sold to £126 from A&B Fell, Silecroft with the best around either side of the £107 mark. A small show of hill ewes were forward with Cheviots selling to £101 from M Allen, Yealand, Rough Fells to £96 from GT Hodgson, Witherslack and Swaledales to £95 from JW Thwaites, Greenholme. J36 Rural Auction Centre: Opening Fortnightly Sale of Store Lambs, Thursday 14th July 2022. Store Lambs For the opening sale of store lambs at North West Auctions Junction 36 there was a large number of medium to long-term lambs forward. The busiest ring side seen for an opening sale of store lambs saw good support from local farmer buyers, as well as a number of travelled buyers ring side. A shortage of short keep lambs on the
market saw best pens sell in excess of the £100 mark. Shapey Texel lambs sold to a top of £113.50 from JT&A Armistead, Selside with a pen of strong Texel lambs from RI Dixon, Low Newton selling to £112. Texel lambs sold to £109.5 from MD&SA Park, Lyth Valley with Texel lambs from G Hargreaves, Scotforth also selling to £109.50. Medium keep Beltex lambs sold to £99 from JC&E Pedley & Sons, Sedbergh. Plenty of pens of lambs regularly sold in the nineties. Mule lambs were in big demand today peaking at £85.50 from E Parker, Mewith with other pens of Mules to £80.50 from B Wilson, Selside. Pens of medium-term lambs regularly sold either side of the eighty pound mark, with long term Continental lambs making the best trade of the day regularly selling in the early seventies. It was commented today by buyers that pens of lambs were very mixed in size and confirmation and would be at an advantage to vendors to correctly sort lambs, if assistance is required a member of the NWA team would be more than happy to assist. Calves & Weanlings The number of calves has been less this week in all local markets with Lancaster having an entry of 46 forward. Strong calves and weanlings were met with big demand and eagerly bid for with younger calves on milk meeting a sticky trade, as many purchasers are worried about the spiralling cost of rearing calves. Plenty of those strong calves sold in the region of £400 with a run of bull calves from Lawson Dairy Limited, Cockerham stealing the headlines selling Simmentals to £425 and British Blues to £420 and £390. A run of calves from AJ & AJ Gibbons, St Michaels saw Limousin bull calves to £400 and British Blue bulls to £400 and £385 with heifers selling to £350. Aberdeen Angus bull calves sold to £400 from Barber Farms, Claughton on Brock. Younger rearing calves on milk regularly selling between £200-£260. Store Cattle Store cattle numbers in market are tight nationwide with Lancaster enjoying another buoyant trade with an overall market average of £1244 per head. Shorthorn steers from GR&A Foy, Conder Green topped the market at £1700. A pen of three Charolais bullocks from R&EA Gardner, Kendal sold to £1660 with other Charolais bullocks to £1500 from EE Thornton & Sons, Heaton and £1490 from C&B Lowther, Over Wyresdale. British Blue bullocks peaked at £1550 from RC Billingotn & Son, Claughton on Brock. Dairy bred bullocks sold to £1490 for a couple of Fleckviehs from J Lamb, Old Glasson with plenty of strong bullocks selling over £1400. The heifer trade peaked at £1480 for a British Blue from B&J Preston, Caton with Limousin to £1460 from Pilling Hall, Pilling with other Limousin heifers to £1440 from R&S Mitchell, Ellel. British Blue cast steers sold to 249.5p/kg from GR&A Foy, Conder Green with Aberdeen Angus cast steer to 244.5p/kg from B&J Preston, Caton or £1581. Limousin OTM heifers sold to 239.5p/kg from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe. Beef cows peaked at 211.5p/kg for Stabilisers from A Dixon & Son, Selside with plenty more selling around the 200p/kg mark peaking at £1763 and £1593. Dairy cows saw Friesians sell to 199.5p/kg at 10 year old from Pilling Hall, Pilling. Plenty of well fleshed dairy cows sold in excess of 190p/kg.
